There are many similarities between the fictional stories of Robinson Crusoe and the Tom Hanks film, Castaway. Man becomes stranded on a deserted island, following a wreck. Man first struggles to survive, before becoming one with his surroundings, and thrives. Man is rescued, and finds himself missing life on the island. But there is one major similarity that is often overlooked, and that is that both of these critically acclaimed, fictional survival stories, are based on the real life Marooning of Alexander Selkirk. We admire those willing to put themselves in such peril with the interest of exploration and discovery in mind, but with those who choose it for fun? It's hard for the rest of us to wrap our heads around. Let's take something common. SkyDiving. It's said you'll never feel so alive! And that's because… you'll never feel so close to certain death. “But it's safe!”, they'll say. And to that I respond. I'm sure it is. Airplanes are safe too. Here's the problem with both. If something small goes wrong… that's a big problem. It's always nice to get away for a day, or even a moment, with someone who had a hand in raising you. Buy them lunch. To repay one of those bags of food they prepared you before school. Sit down and listen. Something a child or teenager takes for granted; that someone will always be there to listen. At least for the lucky ones. So how unlucky to take your dad for a trip as a way of thanking him for a healthy exposure to the wild, and put him in danger of exposure… in the wild? Lost on a lava field. Trudging along for days on an ever growing expanse. Mocked by the choppy chuckle of helicopter blades that fly tourists overhead. They're not looking for you. A grey speck on a chalkboard searching for the road you came in on. Searching for signs then searching for water. And finding nothing as easy as it should be. Maybe a torch would attract some attention? But the lava flows are too hot to close in on. How frustrating. To be in hell and not even able to achieve fire. It's important to know what you're getting into, but in many of life's decisions there's a hard truth of that not being completely possible. Like when joining the United States Armed Forces for instance. There's a lot to be worried about when out on the ice. Top of mind would be the threat of falling through. There's no more disconcerting a noise than that of a moaning fracture from beneath. Usually it's just the lake suffering some indigestion, but on Michigan's Sturgeon Bay, back in January of 1929, a fisherman trying to snag some food almost became it when the black maw to the growling belly below split open in an attempt to swallow him. Lewis Sweet escaped that fate, only to find himself being served on a platter. One would think that if they were to become catastrophically lost, stranded - Marooned - that a major improvement to the situation would be if a thousand or so of one's closest buddies could somehow be with them. One would think. But with rations low, and sharks plucking those buddies away one by one like hors d'oeuvres - chumming the waters - one might be better off alone. The family road trip brings to mind an overpacked station wagon, some unimpressed kids in the back, and a couple of adults arguing up front over a comically large map. Ok legends! it's been a while since we took a spotlight to another show but this one is well worth a listen.Jack Luna the host of Dark Topic and I recently started chatting, we both shared some similarities. Obviously we both do crime shows and have the same name but also that we had both looked into the story of Jason Vukovich. In fact Jack was the guy who dipped into his own pocket to pay for Jason to get some therapy that he so desperately needed. So I have been listening to Dark Topic recently and have been really enjoying it! so lets show it some OMR love and jump on over and check it out here Hosted on Acast. Audio alert: We were trying something new, and Todd accidentally had a compressor going. Its not bad, but its noticeable. Brian Trimble had it all. He had a great job, and a fiancé who adored him. He also had MS though. He and his fiancé, Randi were married in a beautiful storybook wedding. But as they began their married life, Brian began feeling sheltered because his wife, Randi was as he put it over protective of him due to his MS. He became close with a coworker, Blaine Norris, who had dreams of becoming a horror movie director, and he had a script for a movie, and was determined to film it. But, he needed money, which Brian had. Randi put the brakes on it, saying that the money they had in the bank was a nest egg in case Brian's MS ever got bad to the point he wouldn't be able to work. She also forbade Brian from even being involved with the movie because the location had no cell service. Blaine then went into serious debt for the movie, which cost him his marriage. Brian became angry, and Blaine needed money. The two hatched a plan that wound up being proof that you don't want to combine horror movie lore with reality. Join us for this fucked up story. This one goes out to our listeners who shamelessly divulge in the realms of true crime podcasts! We step off the well lit, densely populated path, and into the shadows with the host, writer, and producer of Dark Topic and Crime Machine, the one and only, JACK LUNA! The stories told on DARK TOPIC are ones that would turn the guts of seasoned police officers, and somehow Jack has come out of the booth with his facilities still in tact...sort of. We discuss the ins and outs of curating a show like Crime Machine like a yellow submarine in a sea of true crime podcasts, adaptation during a pandemic, and each weigh in on what it might take to get away with murder these days in the age of social surveillance. Don’t worry, it gets lighter too when we talk about poop and the joys of raising children, but then it gets dark again when we go back into talk of child murder. Ooooops* SIDE NOTE: Since first hearing Dark Topic over two years ago, it’s been a TBE goal to pick the brain of MR. Luna and it is with immense pleasure that I am able to present to you this conversation with the man himself. Enjoy that shit. Listen and Subscribe to DARK TOPIC and CRIME MACHINE on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, and wherever else you may listen to your favorite shows! Visit https://www.1159media.com to get connected. Today’s story is the second half of a two-part tale.Last episode, we left the subject of our story, a young man named Barden, on his lonesome in his hermitage of a flat in Paris. He’s been bothered by strange knocking from the apartment downstairs, and visions of some pale-faced apparition that may or may not be a symptom of his self-imposed isolation.Barden is a man who likes solitude not because he enjoys it, but because it suits him and he’s afraid of trying anything else. But he’s started hearing the first low peels of bellsong in the foggy Parisian night, and soon he may find the call of at least one of those long and lonely notes too enticing to ignore.Support us on PatreonFollow us on social media: Twitter | Facebook | Instagram Join the Westside Fairytales Horror and Lit ClubSend us an emailArtwork by Yui BreedloveThis month’s recommendations:Literature recommendation: ”The House of Sand and Fog” by Andre Dubus IIIRandom horror recommendation: Monstruo, the new podcast from the creators of the Westside Fairytales, Dark Topic, and Sword and Scale See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We are tackling an unfortunate and dark topic today... what do WE as the larger foster/adoption community do about toxic foster families. They ARE out there, and in a system that is underfunded and overworked, they are largely ignored. We talk about our own growing awareness of this issue, and are asking for solutions from YOU dear listener! How we manage to discuss deep things with so many goofy asides is beyond me but we certainly managed to to it this week. What are your thoughts?

I’m coming to you this Halloween-eve with a preview of the up-and-coming collaboration project between myself, Jack Luna of the Dark Topic podcast, and Mike Boudet of the Sword and Scale podcast. I can’t tell you any more about the project other than it’s terribly horrifying, based on true events, and that it lives somewhere on the border between True Crime and Horror Fiction.Oh yeah, and that the first episode will drop 1-9-19.This little episode is an interview of the major players in the team, a sort of get-to-know-you for people who aren’t familiar with us and the working dynamic we share. Hopefully, it gets you as excited as we are for the release in early January. Please share this wherever you can, and help us build up the hype for what’s going to be the definitive podcasting moment of the New Year. For real, nobody has ever put something like this out before.Support WSF on PatreonFollow WSF on social media: Twitter | Facebook | Instagram Join the Westside Fairytales Horror and Lit ClubSend us an emailGet out there and show some love to @Dark_Topic and @SwordandScale as well.Westside Fairytales returns with a new regular episode this Friday. We all feel the urge to run sometimes. Pressure builds up around us, pushing on our chests and heads, caving in the soft bits inside our ears and eyes until we feel fit to burst. Money, family, loneliness, the struggle to be known, the pain of being forgotten, it all stacks up and gets heavier. And heavier. And heavier. And when it gets to be too much, there’s a part of you inside that lets you know. We need to run now. We either run, or we die.Today’s story is about a girl who decides to run. She’s taken all she can of the life that was given to her at birth, a life that’s had terrible consequences for most all of the people who’ve gotten tangled up in it. She gets involved with a soon-to-be notorious outlaw, and cuts a path of crime and pain across America, until she arrives at her final destination a thousand miles from where she started, feeling like she’d never really left at all.Support us on PatreonFollow us on social media: Twitter | Facebook | Instagram Join the Westside Fairytales Horror and Lit ClubSend us an emailArtwork by Yui BreedloveThis month’s recommendations:Podcast recommendations: Dark Topic and Canadian True CrimeLiterature recommendation: ”A Winter Haunting” by Dan Simmons See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
