Fratello On Air: The Latest News Including Breguet And Rolex

Welcome to another episode of Fratello On Air. This week, we cover the latest news on watches and other subjects. We discuss the 250th Anniversary of Breguet and several other high-end brands. It was a relatively quiet week on the watch front, but there were still releases and news. Breguet released its first anniversary model, and it's worth some words. This leads to our thoughts on other higher-end brands. Also, we discuss Rolex, but not in the way you'd expect.HandgelenkskontrolleWe kick off the episode with a discussion about a vintage mesh JB Champion bracelet Mike purchased on eBay. It's a nice accompaniment to a Speedmaster, but the current Forstner is a fantastically accurate reissue. Then we discuss several TV shows, including You, Daredevil, and Dope Thief. Balazs has bought new New Balance sneakers, which leads to a discussion on some of the brand's other releases. For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Mike is wearing a 14K Movado "Ellipse" he recently received from his father. Balazs is also wearing a recently acquired family piece, the Girard-Perregaux Scuderia Ferrari Foudroyante Rattrapante.Breguet, Rolex, and other newsWe talk about Rolex because Balazs is potentially in the market for a new model. The Datejust has become quite expensive, especially with the white gold fluted bezel. This has Balazs considering an Oyster Perpetual with a dark green dial. We'll report back once he visits the local AD's to see if there is a waiting list. Breguet released the Classique Souscription 2025, a 40mm gold watch with an enamel dial and one hand. This spawns a longer discussion about the brand and how we hope great releases are coming during this important year. Blancpain and, ultimately, Vacheron get pulled into the episode as we long for iconic classic dress watches. We hope you enjoyed today's show. As always, if you have future topics, please feel free to let us know.

The most emblematic of all Rolex models, the Datejust has been a mainstay of the brand since 1945. Today, the Datejust is one of Rolex's most varied collections, available in a vast assortment of materials and colors, in addition to a range of dials, bezels, and bracelets. Regardless of the specific style, what defines a Datejust is its date window at 3 o'clock, always topped with a Cyclops lens to magnify the date. Pierre Biver of J.C. Biver, Jasper Lifering of Amsterdam Vintage Watches, and Erik Gustafson of Hairspring Watches join me in three separate conversations to provide a holistic overview of stone dials.Over the past few years, stone dials have seemingly popped up everywhere. More modern brands are making them. At the same time, vintage examples have become more collectible and jumped in price considerably. But stone dials are still a relatively undiscovered corner of watch collecting. They're not well understood on the vintage or modern side.So I wanted to cover them on Hodinkee. Typically, we'd do this by talking to a few experts and synthesizing those conversations into an in-depth article. But I decided to try something different this time around, hitting record on three conversations to learn about modern stone dial production, vintage collecting, and everything in between. Our first conversation is with Pierre Biver, who started J.C. Biver with his father Jean-Claude Biver last year. Each of their releases has included a stone dial option. Then, I talk with two dealers. First is Jasper Lijfering of Amsterdam Vintage Watches, a vintage dealer and trained gemologist. Second is Erik Gustafson of Hairspring Watches, who has helped grow the scholarship around stone dials. We dive into the recent discussion around Rolex "obsidian" dials; as we'll discuss, this name isn't quite accurate and it shows how much there still is to learn about vintage watches, and stone dials in particular.I hope all three conversations give you a better understanding of stone dials. Note that I've tried to include links to an example of all stone dials mentioned in the audio, so check the show notes below if you're not sure what a particular stone looks like.Show Notes1:23: Hands-On: The Biver Automatique2:14: Hands-On: The Biver Carillon Tourbillon19:30: Hands-On: The Berneron Mirage Realizes Its Creator's Uncompromising Vision24:00: Hands-On: Baltic Prismic Stone Dial Limited Editions31:54: Amsterdam Vintage Watches33:35: In-Depth: How Piaget Defined The 1970s, And How It Can Do The Same Today38:15: Example of a Rolex Day-Date with Malachite dial39:16: Example of a Rolex Day-Date with Coral dial41:53: Dr. Helmut Crott's The Dial42:45: Example of a Rolex Day-Date with black Onyx dial43:15: Example of a Piaget Protocole with Lapis Lazuli dial43:28: Example of a Rolex Day-Date with Tiger's Eye dial45:20: Example of a Rolex Day-Date with Green Jasper dial46:30: Example of a Rolex Day-Date with Pyramid Onyx dial46:55: Jasper's white gold Datejust with Red Jasper dial52:05: Rolex Day-Date with 'Bloodstone' dial54:10: Hairspring Watches56:00: Hairspring's post about the "Obsidian" dial Rolex Datejust58:45: Recapping The Glamorous Day-Date Sale At Phillips (That Time The Average Day-Date Sold For $110,580)1:00:00: "Obsidian" Rolex at Phillips in 20201:02:30: Rolex Day-Date Khanjar with "Obsidian" dial that Loupe This described as "although it looks like an onyx stone dial, after closer inspection it appears the dial is a painted/ lacquer dial."1:11:37: Introducing: Audemars Piguet Brings Back The Starwheel (Live Pics) (including pics of a tropical Starwheel)1:11:58: Rolex Daytona ref. 116500 "Lemon" dial

Do you want to work with us on a timepiece? email us support@chriswarnes.com Chris dives into one of the most iconic ladies' watches ever made: the Rolex Datejust 69173. This classic timepiece, introduced in the 1980s and discontinued in 2003, exudes timeless elegance with its two-tone stainless steel and gold bracelet and case. With dial options ranging from Champagne to pearl, and even factory diamond versions, this watch has a touch of luxury for every taste. We explore its standout features, like the gold fluted bezel that catches the light beautifully, its 26mm case, and a 42-hour power reserve. While Rolex claims a 100m water resistance, we advise against diving—this model is more about style than ruggedness. On the secondary market, you can find the Datejust 69173 priced between $2,000 and $5,000, depending on its condition. However, be cautious of common issues like bracelet sag, swapped or spotted dials, and missing links. In our review, we'll discuss why this watch holds its value and why it's a fantastic choice for daily wear, from dinner to the beach. We rate the Rolex Datejust 69173 a solid 7.5 out of 10. Fratello On Air returns with a new episode and this time, we ask what would make each other buy a new Rolex. While there's no question that the brand makes amazing watches, we tend to be vintage lovers around here. So, what would make us pull the trigger on a new model?A new Rolex is on everyone's shopping list, right? Not so fast. Neither of your co-hosts has a new Rolex at the top of our shopping lists. So, what would sway us? We talk about the models we do enjoy and a couple of desired changes to the lineup. Then, we shift gears and discuss the Longines Spirit Zulu Time and whether it truly stacks up against the Tudor Black Bay GMT. We hope you enjoy the show! Handgelenks KontrolleWe kick off our episode on what would cause us to buy a new Rolex with our normal banter. Shoes are in play and there's a lot of excitement around the upcoming releases for the year. We mention a few pairs that we'll be watching closely as the year rolls forward. When it comes to the Handglenks Kontrolle, Balazs kicks it off with his Rolex 1675 GMT-Master. He's sporting this after wearing his friend's vintage Rolex 5513 in Hungary. Mike is donning a vintage 35mm Tissot pointer date from the late '40s. We discuss the history of these watches and our thoughts.Buying a new RolexBoth Balazs and I love our vintage Rolex watches. We admire current Rolex watches and do admire certain models such as the GMT-Master II in Pepsi form, the Daytona, and even the 36mm Datejust. However, we miss the days of the more rugged and simple Rolex watches. As a result, we express our thoughts on what changes to the lineup would make us desire a new model. After this, we move on to a discussion about the Longines Spirit Zulu Timer and Longines in general. They've truly made some strides over the last several years. Longines is now often in the same discussions as Tudor and we discuss whether this makes sense or not.We hope you enjoyed this latest episode and thank you for listening! Productive Not Busy- Do Life and Business Confident Focused and with a Plan

Rolex, a renowned Swiss watch manufacturer, has built its brand value and reputation over many decades. Several key factors contribute to the brand's enduring appeal and why people choose Rolex over cheaper alternatives: 1. **Heritage and Tradition:** Rolex was founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis. The company has a long history of watchmaking excellence, which has helped build trust and credibility. Over the years, Rolex has consistently produced high-quality timepieces, and this heritage is a significant part of its value statement. 2. **Quality Craftsmanship:** Rolex is known for its meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship. The brand is associated with precision, durability, and exceptional quality. Rolex watches are made with the finest materials, including stainless steel, gold, and sapphire crystals. The company produces its own components and movements, ensuring control over the entire manufacturing process. 3. **Innovation:** Rolex has a history of innovation in the watch industry. They introduced the first waterproof wristwatch, the Oyster, in 1926, and the first self-winding mechanism in 1931. These innovations not only set Rolex apart but also influenced the industry as a whole. 4. **Iconic Design:** Rolex watches feature timeless and iconic designs. Many of their models, such as the Submariner, Daytona, and Datejust, have become synonymous with luxury and style. Rolex's dedication to design continuity over the years appeals to consumers who appreciate classic aesthetics. 5. **Robust Marketing:** Rolex has invested heavily in marketing and brand image. They have carefully crafted their image as a symbol of success, achievement, and adventure. High-profile endorsements, sponsorships, and partnerships, such as James Bond movies, sports events, and explorations, contribute to this image. 6. **Exclusivity:** Rolex limits the number of watches it produces, creating a sense of scarcity and exclusivity. This exclusivity adds to the brand's allure and drives up demand. 7. **Resale Value:** Rolex watches tend to hold their value well over time, which is an attractive proposition for many buyers. The perception that a Rolex can be an investment contributes to the brand's appeal. 8. **Quality Control:** Rolex has stringent quality control measures, ensuring that each watch meets the highest standards. This reliability is crucial for consumers seeking a watch that will last for generations. 9. **After-Sales Service:** Rolex provides exceptional after-sales service, including warranties, maintenance, and servicing. This reassures customers that their investment is protected and can be maintained for years. 10. **Status Symbol:** Rolex has transcended its role as a timekeeping device to become a status symbol. Owning a Rolex watch often signifies success, prestige, and accomplishment, making it a sought-after item. People are willing to buy Rolex over cheaper options because of the combination of these factors. Rolex watches offer not only accurate timekeeping but also a statement of personal style, status, and appreciation for tradition and quality. It's a brand that has successfully intertwined luxury, craftsmanship, and heritage into a compelling value proposition that appeals to a broad range of consumers. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wayne-weathersby/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wayne-weathersby/support

Happy New Year! Yes, 2023 is here, and we're bringing you the latest episode of Fratello On Air! Balazs and Mike are ready for another rip-roaring year, and they start with a bang. The modern Rolex secondary market and the CPO program are back in focus. We're back — sort of. Balazs has returned to Germany from Hungary while Mike is still hanging out with the iguanas in sunny South Florida. They reminisce about the holidays and strike up some banter about other topics. The Rolex CPO program and the modern Rolex secondary market overall are the subjects of today's episode. There are dreamers out there, folks, and they still believe we are in the salad days of April 2022.Handgelenks KontrolleBefore discussing the Rolex secondary market, we dip into the Handgelenks Kontrolle. This time, we talk about the watches that we wore most during the holidays and share what is currently occupying wrist space. For Balazs, his trip to Hungary had an ulterior motive: he picked up some new old watches! He's sporting a Zenith from the '50s with a black dial and an Excelsior Park EP4 caliber. The watch was likely made for the Yugoslavian Air Force, and we discuss how it compares to his Angelus 215. Mike is wearing his trusty Citizen Promaster BN0220 in the heat and taking it to the pool every day.The modern Rolex secondary marketHere's a bold take: the modern Rolex secondary market is falling apart, and the decline shows no sign of slowing. During the holiday, we've been cruising the internet, looking up prices for current models. It's clear that the market peaked back in April 2022 and that the downward trend has been constant since then. However, we pick on the current GMT-Master II "Batman" and chuckle at a current ad on Bucherer's website for a CPO model listed for CHF 21,000! This is all while similar models are available in droves for 25–30% less. Similarly, we note that tone-deaf dealers are still listing watches such as the 36mm Datejust for 60% over retail while similar pieces exist for 10–15% over list. We dig our heels in and declare that a newer Rolex will not hit our wrists at a premium. Finally, we profess our love for vintage (even 10-year-old) Rolex watches because finding a minty model is so much more challenging. We hope you enjoy this episode, and we look forward to spending 2023 with you! Feel free to reach out if you'd like to suggest a future show topic.

Mike brings up the latest MING 22.01 GMT and asks Balazs what he thinks about "caller" GMT's. In the end, both think this is a subject that receives more scrutiny than necessary. Hello and welcome to yet another exciting edition of The HourTime Show, the official podcast of WristWatchReview.com. Your hosts this week are the returning John (!) as well as Victor and Nicholas. John is back with a vengeance and immediately calls out the shenanigans needed to buy a Rolex nowadays. We can all agree that Rolex makes nice watches, sure, but are they any nicer than AP or Patek that warrant jumping through so many hoops? Or, for us mere mortals, something like an Oris? We debate! Next up, we discuss Patrick's recent review of the Islander ISL-38, a Datejust-esque (or is that SARB-esque, as Victor suggests?) piece that is available from LongIslandWatch.com. (If you're not familiar with Marc from Long Island Watch's YouTube channel, well, you should be. Good stuff!) Nicholas owns an Islander or two and thinks they offer good value for someone who's just getting into watches or has a more modest budget. We then move onto the Timex x Todd Snyder MK1 Bootcamp, a field watch we also recently reviewed on the site. Folks, we've got some mixed feelings on this one, which John describes as a pastiche along the lines of an anime version of a World War II watch. The strap looks cool, but otherwise? Ehhhhh. Hey, at least it's cheap ($138). We close the episode with John explaining his philosophy on watch journalism and why he prefers highlighting smaller, lesser-known brands that are still affordable rather than focusing on high-end such-and-such you see highlighted on a lot of other websites. Once upon a time, Hunter S. Thompson wore a Rolex not because "it's a Rolex" but because it could do a job while taking a beating. Thanks once again to Andrew Haworth for producing this week's episode. Keep it locked to WristWatchReview.com and @wristwatchreview on the ol' Instagram for more fun watch content. We also spend a few minutes discussing the new Tag Heur Aquaracers (we especially like the limited edition 844) and try to figure out Tag's pricing strategy. That's a lot of watches! Welcome to our take on the top 5 new Rolex releases of 2021. We discuss every detail you can imagine on the newly released line up of new watches from Rolex. Join two Rolex watch enthusiasts Anthony and Vinnie (both own Rolex Explorers) and half a watchmaker Alex (not for Rolex) as we go watch by watch, Rolex by Rolex to discuss what we like and what we don't like from the recent Rolex drop. Make sure to listen to our accompanying podcast to join our conversation. Rolex Explorer Upgrade The biggest shock from the new Rolex releases for 2021 is certainly the Rolex Explorer. It was the Rolex release that got us all talking and it was the first one we wanted to discuss on the podcast. While some find the Rolex Explorer the most traditional of the steel sports family that might all be changing with the Explorer being released in 2 tone? The reference 124273 heralds the return to traditional sizing coming in at 36mm but also with a hefty price tag of $11650 USD. A bit of a shock since a bicolour Rolex Explorer is something that nobody has ever asked for at any point in history. Lucky for the more conservative Rolex lovers the 36mm Explorer also makes a return in stainless steel, Rolex Explorer 2 With No Ceramic We were all expecting to finally see a ceramic Rolex Explorer 2  released in 2021 but it just wasn't to be this time. We do still get a new Rolex Explorer though with the reference 226570 in both Polar and Black dial. Updating them from the 3187 movement to the latest 3285 Rolex manufacture movement giving it a boost from 48 hours of power reserve to a far healthier 70 hours. Otherwise the size appears to remain the same at 42mm. Daytona... Three new Daytonas that we can never afford or be able to buy at retail price. In three different colours of gold and with the now incrediblyh pedestrian meteorite dial on all of them. There must be meteorites just dropping from the sky all over the place. Datejust Welcome to the Datejust jungle with this olive green palm dial following on from the colourful oyster perpetual hits of 2020. The reference 126200 will be sure to be another popular choice for those looking for something a little bit different from the Rolex 2021 releases. This is another release to use the 3235 movement that will offer the user 70 hours of power reserve. Discontinued Models... Well the 39mm Explorer is gone so look out for their prices sky rocketing any minute now.
