Cairo-born selector Essam has become recognized in the underground electronic scene over the past few years for his refined blend of deep and progressive house, smoothly transitioning between atmospheric and ambient to full-on elaborate grooves. In this edition of our select series, Essam delivers a dynamic set that leans more on the lighter side of things, incorporating progressive tracks with tribal drums and subtle trippy rhythms that are uptempo but still pretty mellow. Featuring tunes from the likes of David Alvarado, Ben La Desh and Soulforce, the set is peppered with warm grooves and layers of organic and synthesized sounds that evoke the feeling of floating in outer space.

It took David Alvarado five attempts to pass his insurance exam and get his license, but once he did, he made a cool $4,500 in his first month. Easy peasy, he thought, but after that first month he couldn't close a sale. In his interview, David tells the story of his rise, fall, and resurrection in the insurance industry, including the decision that turned his career around and enabled him—at age 24—to buy a new Lexus and a $400,000 home. WE ARE AS GODS offers a deep dive into the many sides of Stewart Brand - creator of The Whole Earth Catalog, which Steve Jobs famously called “Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google existed.” an influential member of Ken Kesey's “The Merry Pranksters,” and founder of the modern environmental movement. Brand's approach to his work and life influenced many, including Steve Jobs, who have gone on to shape our modern world. Now in his 80's, he looks to leave a legacy for the long-term future with his efforts to resurrect ecosystems through de-extinction. The man who coined the phrase “we are as gods and might as well get good at it” is now under fire from former allies who believe he's gone too far, but Brand won't be easily deterred from a mission he feels is necessary to save the future of the planet. Now in his ninth decade, still committed to long term thinking, he controversially advocates for a new approach to nuclear power and the bio-reengineering of keystone extinct species. Co-directors David Alvarado & Jason Sussberg join us to talk about their own paths into the worlds of Stewart Brand, their admiration for his uncanny ability to be at the center of cultural and technological shifts, as well as getting a glimpse into his life away from the spotlight. Welcome to the gathering podcast. Last week we heard an interview between host Peter Varberg and one of our members David Alvarado. It was a vulnerable conversation around addiction and, most importantly, the victory over sin achieved through Jesus. This week, we hear from Shelley, whose walk, while coinciding with Dave in over 30 years of marriage, has her own powerful testimony of places of healing and the mighty redemption Jesus brings in areas of forgiveness, relationships, and especially marriage.

In August of 02018, Long Now founder Stewart Brand, renowned geneticist George Church, and a delegation of observers and scientists traveled to one of Earth's most remote places to witness the ongoing restoration of a part of Siberia back to its Pleistocene-era ecosystem. The team brought back DNA samples to evaluate for mammoth de-extinction, and lots of photos, video, and stories of a place where climate change and arctic deep time can be witnessed at once. At this event Long Now's Stewart Brand, Kevin Kelly, and Alexander Rose will be joined by filmmakers David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg to discuss the trip and the things they learned along the way.

On this episode David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg talk about the exact opposite--immortality, living forever.
Recent episodes of Here Be Monsters have been largely about death. So, on this episode David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg teach us about the exact opposite—immortality, living forever. Their documentary film, The Immortalists, follows a small community of scientists who think of aging as a preventable disease, not an inevitable outcome. Seeking immortality is nothing new, in fact, the oldest known text, The Epic of Gilgamesh, is largely about a king's quest to live forever. And further, it seems to be a quest of the rich and powerful. Today, the community of bio-gerontologists is largely white, rich, and male. Co-director Jason Sussberg calls aging a "first world problem," associating it with Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs. One of the film's protagonists is Aubrey de Grey, an incredibly vocal advocate of anti-aging. He's a computer programmer turned bio-gerontologist. In 2012, he participated in an Oxford debate against Sir Colin Blakemore where the motion was to defeat aging entirely. A clip from this debate appears in the episode, and the whole debate is certainly worth watching. The Immortalists is not yet available for download, but it will be soon (release date is Fall 2014). In the meantime, you can check your local film festivals and theaters to see if there will be showings. Also, visit TheImmoratlists.com, @theimmortalists on Twitter, and The Immortalists on Facebook.

In my opinion, The Immortalists is the frankest, most open-minded and uniquely personal documentary about life-extension in general and Aubrey de Grey and Bill Andrews, in particular.
