In this insightful podcast, Tony speaks with Harry Joffe, Head of Legal at Discovery Life, about the increasingly popular Dollar Life Plan. Designed to meet the needs of globally mobile South Africans, the product allows policyholders to take out and pay for life cover in US dollars. Harry Joffe unpacks the practicalities of premium payments, estate planning advantages, and innovative uses of foreign trusts and offshore payments. This conversation provides valuable insight for financial advisors and clients navigating cross-border financial needs, estate duty implications, and long-term financial security. Key Points from the discussion: Dollar-denominated life cover addresses offshore estate planning needs. Clients can pay via SDA or directly from offshore funds. Premiums are affordable, starting at $50/month. Policy is issued from Guernsey and pays to offshore bank accounts only, making it exempt from South African estate duty. Offshore structures like trusts, companies, and foundations can own the policy. Discovery offers a “short-form trust” for simplified, cost-effective estate planning. Practical for covering offshore estate taxes (e.g., UK or US situs tax). Used increasingly by middle-class families, not just high-net-worth clients. Vitality members can receive a 50% discount on premiums based on the exchange rate.
John Maytham is joined by Dr Maritha van der Walt, Chief Medical Officer at Discovery Life, to discuss the findings of the company’s 2024 claims experience report and the alarming statistics around unnatural deaths. One in five claims fell into this category, with suicide accounting for 35 percent, making it the leading cause ahead of car accidents, crime, trauma, and other incidents. In this episode, we explore the significant impact of health screenings on severe illness claims, particularly cancer. Maya is joined by Discovery Life Deputy Chief Executive Gareth Friedlander and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Maritha van der Walt who shed light on the correlation between screening and claims, highlighting the dramatic drop in screenings during the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent rise in late-stage cancer diagnoses. We also delve into the broader implications of these findings for life insurance and the substantial increase in payouts under Discovery Life's living benefits, such as severe illness, disability, and income protection, which in 2023 exceeded death benefit payouts. As a result, Discovery Life has responded by investing heavily in screening initiatives, leading to a notable increase in early-stage cancer diagnoses in 2023. We discuss real-life examples, like claims for childhood cancers, and the benefits of automatic child severe illness and parent care benefits. Sylvia highlights the unique University Funder benefit, which rewards parents for engaging in Vitality by contributing to their child's education costs. Finally, we explore the importance of diversifying risk cover, including options for overseas education through the Discovery Dollar Life Plan and the Dollar Global Education Protector. These plans offer higher limits and cover the comprehensive costs of international education, providing peace of mind for parents. My guest today is one of the nicest and most genuinely sincere people you will ever meet! And while I personally have many and widely diverse interests, I believe Jeff Etheridge has me beat. Growing up in a family that did a LOT of moving around the country (his dad worked in civil service with the Air Force) it gave Jeff a love of traveling to new places and developed a particular interest in National Parks. In fact, he and his wife Amanda have visited over 20 different National Parks, to date, with plenty more scheduled this year and beyond! We'll talk about a few of his favorites, perhaps some you should add to your list, if you haven't already visited. Jeff is like a tour guide, with suggestions on what to visit and even the best time of year! We'll hear about what lured him to the lake (yes, there WAS a girl involved!) about 20 years ago. And though he's been here a while, his wife Amanda was born here. We'll talk about the changes he's witnessed over the years, some good, some not so good, and some things that just seem to stay the same! You'll hear about one of Jeff's hobbies that has actually become a business: woodworking. His interest in woodworking started long ago, but once he got his first lathe, everything changed. His garage is converted into a workshop and now he creates specialized pieces sold in 38 different states! I'll also ask Jeff some fun questions and you'll enjoy some of his great answers. Don't miss this fun episode! And though you may not know Jeff yet, after listening to his interview, you will want to! Hunter talks to Lenore Skenazy about How to Let Our Kids Grow. Do you worry about giving your kids more independence? Well, protecting them too much might be doing more harm than good. In this episode I talk to Lenore Skenazy, author of Free Range Kids about her new Let Grow Movement and the vital importance of free play for our kids. Some big takeaways from this episode include: 1. We lose our perspective because of fear-mongering media stories 2. Keeping them always “safe” may be keeping them from growing strong, resilient, and emotionally balanced. 3. The best way to promote independence is if we all do it TOGETHER. Lenore has a great resource to do this! Lenore Skenazy is president of the new non-profit Let Grow, and founder of the Free-Range Kids movement. Ten years ago, after her column "Why I Let My 9 Year Old Ride the Subway Alone" landed her on every talk show from The Today Show to Dr. Phil, Skenazy founded the book and blog “Free-Range Kids” to say that kids are NOT in constant danger. Give them a little more freedom and everyone wins. Now she lectures internationally and has been profiled everywhere from The New York Times to The New Yorker to The Daily Show! A journalist herself, Lenore has written for everyone from The Wall Street Journal to Mad Magazine. Yep. Mad. Her reality show “World's Worst Mom,” airs on Discovery Life (from time to time, late at night, in re-runs). In March, Utah became the first state to pass a "Free-Range Parenting Law," guaranteeing parents the right to give their kids some unsupervised time. The goal of Let Grow is to make it easy and normal to give kids back their independence. A Yale grad, Lenore lives in New York City with her husband and beloved computer. Her sons have (safely) flown the coop. Links: https://letgrow.org/ Fan of the Mindful Mama Podcast? Support it by leaving a quick review -----> Apple Podcasts or on Stitcher (or wherever you listen!)
