Anika and Liz infiltrate a pre-warp society, where they absolutely do not enter a race, that is clearly a trap. Not because of the human sacrifice, because of the running! Like episode 3, this felt a bit predictable, but ALSO like a rebuke to "Lift Us Up Where Suffering Cannot Reach" and "Who Watches The Watchers", so we're not mad about it What if obeying the Prime Directive is the unethical option? In this episode we interview Tammy Kovich and El Jones to discuss the book Antifascism Against Machismo Published by our good friends at Kersplebedeb, and described as “An intergenerational dialogue on the meaning of feminist antifascism. Anti-Fascism Against Machismo collects and continues a conversation begun by Tammy Kovich (as “Petronella Lee”) in 2019. Four feminist, antifascist revolutionaries jump off from each other's reflections and bring the particularities of their varied contexts to bear on one central problem: What has and will a women's war against fascism look like?” We pick up this conversation with Tammy Kovich who wrote the original zine upon which the book is constructed as well as El Jones who wrote the introduction. The book itself also includes contributions from Veronica L and from the late great Butch Lee who became an ancestor in 2021, and who we all spend time honoring in this conversation. Among other things we discuss different variants of fascist or far right patriarchy and misogyny, the problems of the politics of representation and neocolonialism, and histories of the resistance of women in antifascist movements including in Ethiopia, Yugoslavia, and Spain. I will add that we recorded this conversation back in August, and I am sure that if we had recorded it after October 7th we would have talked about what an antifascist war against zionism might look like and the contributions of women and children in the Palestinian struggle against genocide. We very much appreciated this book and encourage folks to pick it up from Kersplebedeb's retail arm which is leftwingbooks.net/. It is currently 40% off for the month of March along with over 400 titles at their online bookstore. Jaeger Kovich joins this week to discuss his career as a golf course architect. Born as a New Yorker, Jaeger was exposed to Shinnecock Hills early in his teens for what he calls his "aha moment". A few books later, the aha moment became a persistent chase to work for Tom Doak. That push included many emails, uncertainty, and nights studying mandarin in hopes of getting the next job in China. He got that job, eventually worked with Gil Hanse & Jim Wagner for many years, eventually as an associate, where he experienced the boom of restorations and new builds we all know and love. The security of those jobs did not stop him. He put everything into what once was a vehicle for contracting work, Proper Golf, and has been at work consulting for clubs in the Northeast. Because he's seen so much, worked with so many talented shapers, superintendents, associates, architects, owners, and clubs, the stories are endless. We kept it brief today and happy with what we covered. Hope you all enjoy!Cheers,- The Tie GuysWebsite:https://www.thetiepodcast.comInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/thetiepodcast/?hl=enTwitter:https://mobile.twitter.com/thetiepodcastGoodWalk Coffee:https://goodwalkcoffee.comCODE: thetie for 20% offBDraddy:bdraddy.comCODE: thetie25 for 25% off
Experience the journey of Chef Josh Morris and his unconventional path to success as he teaches us to elevate those around us and appreciate life's blessings."Being a chef is about elevating everybody around you. Right. Because they've got to execute your dream, your visions. So the idea is to elevate everybody around you."Josh Morris is a chef from Gainesville, Texas who has been cooking for 20 years. He has an obsessive personality and has been influenced by his wife and Anthony Bourdain to pursue a career in the culinary arts.Josh Morris was always passionate about cooking, but lacked formal direction. Unfazed by the lack of formal training and with a strong puppy-love for the industry, he took it upon himself to learn and grow in the kitchen. He took on restaurant roles and quickly found himself in leadership positions, learning valuable lessons about delegating tasks and elevating those around him. When he had children, though, he found himself having to take things more seriously, as he had to provide for them. He was gifted with children, and subsequently had to adjust his priorities, his decision making process, and even become a student of books. Ultimately, this is how Josh Morris learned about delegating tasks in the kitchen. In this episode, you will learn the following:1. How Do You Delegate Responsibilities as a Chef?2. What Are the Challenges of Being an Underprivileged Chef?3. What Are the Pros and Cons of Going to Culinary School?Instagram: @insidethepressurecookerYouTube: @insidethepressurecookerTwitter: @chadkelleyPatreon: @InsidethepressurecookerFeedback: Email me!Website: https://insidethepressurecooker.comLoved this episode? We're here with Chef Josh Morris. Man, I almost lost it again. There Josh Morris. And we're doing compare. Contrast. Not even that. I'm going to kind of edit that out. All right, let's start this over. All right, everybody, welcome back. We're here with Josh Morris, and we're going to be talking paths. The path I took versus the path he took. Very different paths, but pretty much ended up in the same spot at one point. So not really a but we did. So, Morris, tell me kind of your path a little bit now. The other part to this, though, is we're not going to touch base for everybody listening on his entire kind of history. If you want to know more about Morris, go ahead and take a look at season one, episode one, and there's a full interview with him then kind of a little bit more detailed about who he is, the life of his apparent and chef and all that fun stuff. Morris, your path?Speaker B 00:05:16Yeah.Speaker A 00:05:17I mean, what got you into it then?Speaker B 00:05:21I grew up in Gainesville, Texas. It's a really small town just south of the Oklahoma border. Didn't have a lot of money growing up. Our meals consisted of ground beef, potatoes, cream of mushroom soup for pretty much every meal. There was no interest in food in my entire family, except my great aunt owned a diner on the town square.Speaker A 00:05:56Right on.Speaker B 00:05:57And at one point or another, everybody in my family worked there. But it wasn't like any interest in the restaurant business. It was just a way to make money.Speaker A 00:06:07Sure.Speaker B 00:06:08I even worked there a couple of times. I remember being like, nine or ten years old and standing on a milk crate so that I could reach the plates in the bottom of the three bay.Speaker A 00:06:19Yes.Speaker B 00:06:23That was pretty much the extent of it. We ate a lot of canned vegetables, but both at the grandparents had gardens, so we'd have tomatoes and peppers and onions in the summer. And I was the kind of kid that I didn't hate anything. Most kids like having a don't like broccoli or asparagus or something like that, and I just loved food all the time. It didn't really matter what it was. And I liked going out to restaurants, even though we didn't do it very often. I think because we didn't do it very often, it was much more of an experience. And I can remember as a kid being really excited to go out and meet with my parents, and my kids are most definitely not like that. We're going out to eat again. Why? I've always been a creative person as a kid. I would draw a lot. I got into music fairly early. I was a writer for a while, so I've always had that creative bug. But actually getting into the restaurant business was it was just for money. It didn't really hold any other appeal other than a nice steady paycheck at first. And then as a cook in a town that's kind of, like, known to be a drug town, got to fall into the pitfalls of that lifestyle. Like, a lot of drinking, a lot of drugs, a lot of hard partying, and your ambitions kind of fade when you're living like that. I mean, it's just like the whole point is to get fucked up. I lived that way for, I don't know, from the time I was 17 till I was, like, 20 or 21. When I turned 21, I got into a relationship with a girl that had two small kids. And I didn't get into that with any intention of becoming, like, a father figure, but that's ultimately what happened. It was a very fucked up relationship, to say the least, but she ended up being a really bad person, and she left us. She left me and the kids. So I became a single father for a while, and I was working two cook jobs at the time and taking care of kids by myself. So it was kind of a hard row for a while. But the bug, I guess, was always there for creating stuff. But I worked in restaurants where there was zero creativity. It was all about volume. Right. It wasn't until I started dating my wife now that the idea of becoming a chef really sat in. And the two people that I cannot overstate their influence on my career are my wife, who allowed me to pursue more dreams of becoming a chef, and bourdain. I think a lot of chefs of our generation can chop bourdain quite a bit. So for the first ten years, I say I've been cooking for 20 years. For the first ten years, I cooked things in a microwave. The only skill I really picked up there was how to be fast, how to be efficient, and how to cook a steak with your fingers, which is a great skill to have.Speaker A 00:10:08There's one good takeaway.Speaker B 00:10:10Yeah, for sure.Speaker A 00:10:16Obviously, your wife was I'm assuming she was in the industry when you met her then.Speaker B 00:10:22Yeah, we actually knew each other at that first restaurant. We worked together, but we didn't date for the first ten years that we knew each other.Speaker A 00:10:30Okay.Speaker B 00:10:31Our path just kind of crossed back together later on in life, and things turned out okay after all that bullshit.Speaker A 00:10:42That I went through, what got you into cooking? What is it about her that got you into it? Was she just kind of did you cook at home and were more creative? And she's like, man, you need to drive this further?Speaker B 00:10:58It was certainly that. Yeah, because when I was a single dad and I had two jobs, I would have $50 to last three people groceries for two weeks.Speaker A 00:11:11Fucking impressive. Yeah.Speaker B 00:11:14I did what I had to do, but there's not a lot of creativity to be had when you have to live off the bare minimum. But once I had her second income, and we got a house, and she was a really great cook. And I was just, like, sitting in the kitchen and watch it because I was so impressed by the things that she knew. And she just learned this stuff from watching cooking shows. So I started watching cooking shows, and of course, Bourdain was the big one, even though he didn't cook that much on that show, he resonated with me because he was a rider, too. He was definitely rebellious, but he had this real empathy for other people and certain romanticism about a cook's life.Speaker A 00:12:04Not just a cook's life, but just the food and cultures and just so many things that were so unappreciated in the world. He definitely took us all to places that people were lack of a better term were kind of scared to go.Speaker B 00:12:22Yes. And it was through that kind of channel where I've always been poor and I've never had the chance to travel, or even when I started thinking about becoming a chef, I didn't have the opportunity to go stage in fancy kitchens or anything like that. I really didn't understand the means of how to even go about doing any of those things.Speaker A 00:12:51That makes sense. I mean, yeah, when you're getting into it, like, it takes time to really understand and then comprehend. I know this seemed like the same word, but it's almost two different words because you kind of understand what cooking is and where you're going, and then there's that next level when you're talking about going and stagging at places, and it's like, wait, what? Then there's the concept of people like, I have to do this. And you're like, no, you don't have to. Right. But it definitely helps with experience for those resume builders out there. It is.Speaker B 00:13:39But I've always kind of had an obsessive personality. Like, whatever I'm into, I'm 100% fully into it. So when I started thinking about food and becoming a chef, I would have dinner parties at my house, trying new things. I would get books from the library, just, like, stacks and stacks of them. And I think because of Bourdain, like, the travel shows, I really started to lean into flavors and cultures that I wasn't familiar with. So big, bold flavors really appealed to me at first. Korean food, Caribbean, African, all these ingredients and flavors that I didn't understand. And when I finally did become a soup chef and had input on a menu, even though it didn't really fit with where I was, those were the things that I would push. And that was kind of a frequent pitfall of chefs when they're coming up. I think as you start to cook for you and you don't really cook for the guest, you're just kind of like, what can I do? How can I create what's next?Speaker A 00:14:56Yeah, especially as a young cook in ensue, because you get so you're enamored by it all. And just your love. And it's such that almost like puppy love stage. I've always been that chef. I was in that same spot. But being that chef, having those younger cooks and Sue's that have always wanted to bring stuff to the table, and you're always kind of looking at it and you're like, man, how do I let the air out of this balloon slowly? Because it's one of those, like, man, I love this. This is great. I love the energy, but it's like, okay, it doesn't fit. So it's like, how can we keep pushing that same energy and be encouraging, but also tell them, like, there's no way in hell it's going to be on the menu.Speaker B 00:15:54And there were some times where I definitely had to learn the hard way, where I would do a tasting for people. They're like, there's no fucking way you can sell this good though it might be, like, it just doesn't fit concept, and it's just kind of weak. And even as a sous chef, like I said, with the obsessive nature that I had, I pushed hard. I would work 60, 70 hours, weeks. And from where I came from, I was a leader in that kind of field. But the way I got there is because I would do things that nobody else would do. And I did them fast and I did them well. So I became, like this machine of self sufficiency, but I didn't know how to delegate. And that was another pitfall that came from when I did become an executive chef, was I took that burden all on myself, and I did not let anybody else touch my shit.Speaker A 00:16:59No, I think that's a common one for so many people when they get into it, and even with people with experience, when they get into a new role, with new people around them not learning, but just actually delegating. Because everybody knows that you have to kind of delegate stuff out to get things done. Because it's not like you just woke up one day, never walked into a restaurant, and then you're just, hey, I'm running the show here. No, I mean, you understood. You've been a part of it. You've been delegated, too. So, I mean, there's a party to you that knew what you needed to do, but there's that fear of, like, man, this is all on me now. And so the concept of delegating becomes really, really difficult to kind of comprehend and actually deal out. I've been there. I've been in that chef and then went to a new restaurant, new town, new city, new state, and had to be that guy and the delegate things out. But I didn't trust anybody. The spotlight was on me again, right? But it was, like, on a very different platform, so there's even more pressure. And I had to fall in my face a few times. And it's part of the learning process.Speaker B 00:18:33Yeah, for sure. I think these are all very common problems, but they sucked at the time.Speaker A 00:18:40But they're not going to go away.Speaker B 00:18:44Failure is how you learn. So I learned a lot. And then I got promoted from sue chef to executive chef. That was a huge deal for me. And I was executive chef for probably four months, and I was really starting to find my vibe. And then Kovich shut down everything. The reason I bring this up is, aside from kind of losing my vibe, I was out of work for almost three months. For the first month, I was trapped at home with the kids. My wife was still working, her restaurant was still open.Speaker A 00:19:23Trapped is a good way to put it.Speaker B 00:19:28I really did kind of hit like a spiral of depression for a minute because it was just like there's a lot of uncertainty about where my future was, if the restaurant was going to come back, if I was going to have a job still. But once I kind of broke free of that, I really just needed something to do to keep my mind busy. So I started a garden in the backyard, and I started getting more into that. And I called you up and I borrowed some old school, like, chef books. That happened is because I was reading French Laundry book, and Thomas Keller talked about how he became an executive chef before he even really learned how to cook. And that one sentence hit me hard. I was like, oh, my God. I've just been like, snowballing all this shit that I've just kind of been teaching myself without ever really knowing any fundamentals. So that's why it hits you up to borrow, like, escophier and things of that nature. It's like reading the Bible. It's hard to sit there and just read the Staffier. You power through it and you learn. One of the bigger ones that hit me was the Irving book that you let me borrow, the secular gastronomy, which that term and modernist cuisine kind of get lumped in together when they're not the fucking same. Modernist cuisine became all the foams and the hydrocolloids and things of that nature. The actual molecular gastronomy was started in the it's just a science behind why things work the way they do. Easy stuff, too. Like, why are your mashed potatoes gloomy?Speaker A 00:21:27Yeah, I'm looking up to see when that book was originally published. I mean, the one that's showing me is 2002, but that's not right because I've owned that book before then. Fairly certain it was from the think so, yeah. Chef Herve, his stuff that he talks about in that book was like the concept of sou vide and so much of that. It's called molecular gastronomy, but it's almost more just like the science of cooking, right? Yeah. And it's a great book. I really enjoyed it. Another one, honestly, I don't own it, and I don't know why, but on food and cooking. Harold McGee it's essentially the American version of molecular gastronomy, right? Exploring the science of flavors. So those are both great or not research, but reference books.Speaker B 00:22:41Yeah. And that was I don't know, it was a big learning curve for me, like really diving into the old school French instead of the stuff that I had been doing. My interest was piqued into learning how to do that stuff, so I would practice at home. I also got really into fermentation while I was on lockdown, so I didn't have much else to do.Speaker A 00:23:07I'm just going to sit here and watch this thing bubble.Speaker B 00:23:12I got really good at making my own vinegars. That was a big one. Doing a lot of pickles. I would say that COVID for me, was actually kind of a good thing. It sucked. But at the same time, I stayed busy and I stayed learning. And I learned a lot of stuff that I wouldn't have learned if I was still so busy at the restaurant that I don't have time for reading and diving and things like that. So we came back from COVID and obviously product was hard to come by. And that was probably the funnest couple of months of my cooking career. Because we were open dinner only for a while. I brought back my top cooks. We had a skeleton crew. We changed the menu almost daily. We had a blast. We and the crew had a blast. For the first couple of months, things started to reopen. We got back into the flow pretty quickly. Business was back, it was booming. But I still had I guess my ideas were getting bigger than where I was. There were certain things that I knew I could never do at that restaurant. And I already have kind of a chip on my shoulder because I was 27 when I decided to work at a real kitchen. And like I said, I didn't have a chance to stage or anything like that. So anything that I didn't learn at that restaurant, I taught myself.Speaker A 00:24:54Right.Speaker B 00:24:54I've always felt like I was behind the eight ball, so I had a lot to prove. Still do. But out of the 20 years that I've been working in kitchens, I've only been a chef by title for almost three years. And that's another, I guess, kind of chip on the shoulder, is like, how do I still consider myself a chef? I haven't had that title for almost two years now.Speaker A 00:25:25It's just a title.Speaker B 00:25:27Yeah, I try to tell myself that I consider myself a chef and that's what's fucking important. This is what I've decided to dedicate my life to. And I do. But I still do.Speaker A 00:25:44No, I mean, for me, the concept of chef and the titles, the name and title gets thrown around in a lot of ways. You know what I'm talking about. And to me, the concept of a chef and being able to call yourself a chef means that you've been a part of a restaurant where you are in a leadership role that also involved creativity. Right. Okay. Being in a leadership role, that's a whole nother level of creativity. If you have ever tried to figure out the scheduling, sometimes during labor crisis and during COVID and stuff that's talk about creativity as well as just punishing yourself, but I'm talking about more creativity in the world of cooking. Right. And also being able to go to someone and almost become their mentor and be able to teach them. Because being a chef is about elevating everybody around you. Right. Because they've got to execute your dream, your visions. So the idea is to elevate everybody around you. And to me, that's a chef, someone that's in a leadership role that can elevate the people around them, that would be a better way to say it.Speaker B 00:27:20I like that.Speaker A 00:27:21Yeah. So with that, you qualify.Speaker B 00:27:28No, thank you.Speaker A 00:27:34Now that you've got my blessing. All right.Speaker B 00:27:44That's where we're at.Speaker A 00:27:47Grew up, we'll say underprivileged no real direction, and finally kind of found that direction. Did not go to any kind of formal culinary training. Informal culinary training. All your training was just self taught.Speaker B 00:28:13Yeah.Speaker A 00:28:17And then finally just the whole, like, okay, time to get into restaurants. Like, lack of a term. A real restaurant. Real restaurant, meaning a scratch kitchen that did not own a microwave. Right. And then just learning the ropes.Speaker B 00:28:39Yeah. And I pushed just as hard as I did when I was executive chef, but I didn't really have a lot of backup because my soup chefs were guys that were still running the line. They still had to run chefs. They were part of the cooking crew, so I couldn't put too much on their plate as far as, like, ordering and inventory. I kind of did a disservice to them. I'm not going to lie by not teaching them those things. But at the same time, it was just kind of, like, head down, do it. I worked sick. I worked 70 to 80 hours a week sometimes. I worked a couple of 36 hours shifts. And those are the things you do because you love it. You will literally drive yourself into a fucking hole. But it's all for the love.Speaker A 00:29:39Yeah.Speaker B 00:29:46I think to a normal person, hearing that you worked a 36 hours shift is so mind blowing. You worked almost 40 hours in two days. Yes, I did.Speaker A 00:30:04There's so many people that aren't familiar with the industry that if they happen to be listening to this, are going to call bullshit on that too, because they're like, It's not possible. And it's like, yeah, actually it is. And it's pretty easy, man. So our path, we just kind of recapped yours versus mine. I grew up, and I was just working fast food, kind of, and went to culinary school. I was able to do that. And honestly, I probably went to culinary school sooner than I should have because I didn't have any real, as I put it, real restaurant experience, other than just knowing that there was something about it that was like, Hell, yeah. And then just kind of bounced around the country until we kind of finally met. But it's a very interesting where I was fortunate, where I didn't have anything kind of holding me back and was never really into any kind of relationship of any kind for very long because my relationship was with restaurants and cooking. And so honestly, when it came to the concept of dating or going out, it was just never a factor for me. I couldn't well, when am I going to go? I'm always working. Not working. I'm studying. And I had no desire to do anything other than work and study for decades.Speaker B 00:32:02It's definitely a different spin with a lot of people that get into this industry. They want to become chefs, and they have that opportunity to stage or travel or work multiple places and sometimes work for free just to get experience. And when you're a parent, you have to think about money first, and you have to think about their well being first. So your priorities are really out of whack. Everyone else's.Speaker A 00:32:35Absolutely.Speaker B 00:32:36The goal is nonetheless the same.Speaker A 00:32:40I remember when we had our first daughter, or only daughter, my first kid, it was a moment of like, oh, shit. Okay, got to take things a little bit more seriously, right? And it's like, okay, still bounced around a little bit. Not too bad. And then when we had our second kid, the moment I found out that we were going to have two, it was scarier than the first one because it was like, I really can't fuck up. No, I can't just on a whim say, hey, fuck you, and I'm going somewhere else, because I didn't like the way you looked at me today. It was like, no, it's time to take things a whole lot more seriously. Some of the frustrations and all that stuff just had to be like, well, I can suck it up, right? Work through it, but just also learn to communicate some of that stuff as well. Once you start adding kids to it, mouse to feed and the cost to just have not just to have them in your life, especially when you start talking like daycares, man, I don't think people really understand how much that costs, depending on what part of the country you're in. I mean, you're easily spending $10,000 a year per kid in daycare so you can work.Speaker B 00:34:31So that you can pay for daycare. It's a really good thing.Speaker A 00:34:35So, I mean, when you take how much someone makes let's call it a sue happens to be bringing in 45 to 50 maybe right after taxes and everything, and then take out daycare, and that's like maybe 25 grand a year of spending money that doesn't include mortgage or rent groceries. Children are amazing. They're an incredible blessing. They helped me. They changed me in a lot of good ways. And some of it was subconsciously, too. And I am incredibly grateful for them, even when they pissed me off. It changes your decision making process and your priorities to a degree.Speaker B 00:35:51Sure.Speaker A 00:35:56Kids. So with that, don't have kids until you're ready. Yeah, but sometimes you're gifted with them. And I know that you love those kids more than anything, too.Speaker B 00:36:14I do like my children.Speaker A 00:36:18On most days.Speaker B 00:36:20Most days. As a child, I always tell myself that I would never have kids, which is hilarious. I now have four.Speaker A 00:36:34Yes, that is funny. Well, that's for me, not kids, but as a student. I was a horrible student in so many ways. I didn't read a book like any book through school without all my tests and all that stuff, for all the reading they're supposed to be doing. It was based off, like, Cliff Notes and all that stuff. But I didn't read a book until I was out of high school. And now I've got a library and.Speaker B 00:37:13I read every day.Speaker A 00:37:13Now I'm not just talking culinary, but just everything. So it's funny how life changes.Speaker B 00:37:22I was always a big reader. What was that horrible at math, though? I'm still terrible at math, but I have to use it every fucking day. Conversions and such.Speaker A 00:37:36Oh, conversions.

We know the measure of a man; this week Ken and Bri learn the measure of a Zora. Was Stamets the right person to lead this charge against artificial intelligence? And is there anything Kovich can't do? We also celebrate the return of Star Trek to its roots, with lots of talking and diplomacy over … The post Discovery S4E07: …But to Connect first appeared on Transporter Lock - A Star Trek podcast.
It's the mid-season finale of Star Trek Discovery. What it's all be leading up to (before, you know, the rest of the season). The Federation has called together an assembly of all the major worlds and races, Federation and otherwise, from all four quadrants of the galaxy to discuss what must be done about the DMA and "Species 10C." At the same time, Zora (Discovery's erstwhile computer), has used all the data from the subspace rift to find out the coordinates of whoever made and sent the DMA – but she is unwilling to give that information to the crew because she thinks it will put them in danger. Enter Dr. Kovich to help figure out what is going on there. Meanwhile, at the assembly things breakdown along the lines of dealing with thing. One faction wants to make a show of strength and strike back, destroying the anomaly; the other faction wants to try and established first contact before jumping to any conclusions. Book and Michael find themselves on opposites sides of the debate. So. Will the Federation attack? will they make peaceful overtures? Will Zora hand over the coordinates to the crew of Discovery? Will she be determined a sentient AI and be forcibly expunged from DISCO's computer? Do androids dream of electric sheep?!?!?!?!? We'll answer *most* of those questions in this episode of Set Phasers: A Highly Illogical Star Trek Podcast. This week, on Episode 532 of Priority One: ViacomCBS upsets most of the world; Star Trek Explorer Magazine debuts; Star Trek Online introduces a new 32nd century starship–plus, we start our S4 review of Star Trek: Discovery. TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds Sheer ****ing Hubris, ViacomCBS By Cat Hough Well, the news broke early on Tuesday the 16th that international fans of Star Trek: Discovery will have to wait until 2022 to be able to watch Season 4–and then only watch it on Paramount+. Under the terms of an agreement finalized today between Netflix and ViacomCBS, Netflix will no longer be streaming the show. ViacomCBS was most likely pleased with the agreement since, under the 2017 deal that Les Moonves had set up with Netflix, CBS had agreed to pay the bulk of the show's costly budget for the overseas rights. All images: ViacomCBS, via Imgur user SaysThePenguin. This should not be a huge surprise, though, given ViacomCBS's efforts to incentive subscribers to Paramount+. Back at the end of September The Original Series, Voyager, and Enterprise all left Netflix–Paramount+ is the only platform to watch these series. All images: ViacomCBS, via Imgur user SaysThePenguin. But now that Netflix is out of the picture, the UK, Germany, Ireland, Austria and Switzerland will be the first international markets to stream Discovery on Paramount+. ViacomCBS has said that as part of an accelerated expansion they anticipate being in around 45 markets within the next year or so. No news on the release date for our Australian friends, though. Star Trek 4 Hopes For Holiday Magic By Elio Lleo While we're on the topic of disappointing news, the 4th installment of Star Trek set in the Kelvin Timeline is being delayed again. Now, the new release date is slated for a holiday release on December 22, 2023 (originally, it was scheduled for June 9th, 2022). Perhaps the marketing folks at ViacomCBS listened to our episode where we discussed the uphill battle Star Trek faces when released beside other (more popular) franchises. Or they just read the same industry articles that we do. https://priorityonepodcast.com/530-treks-better-than-wars-thats-debatable-priority-one-a-roddenberry-star-trek-podcast/ Either way Star Trek, along with other tiles like Transformers, are being pushed. Now, this could be a rarely well executed smart move on behalf of the suits in charge of these things. According to Scott Mendelson of Forbes.com, Paramount+ is betting that Star Wars: Rogue Squadron won't be able to stick to their holiday 2023 release date–especially when there's been little movement on that Star Wars installment. That leaves Trek to reap the benefits of the season. Mendelson writes, “the optimistic scenario is that Star Trek 4 positions itself as the Christmas event movie of 2023 and proves to be crowd pleasing enough to allow holiday legs to give the struggling franchise a kick in the butt after a disappointing third installment. That's what happened with Paramount's own Mission: Impossible–Ghost Protocol in December 2011 after J.J. Abrams' underwhelming Mission: Impossible III 5.5 years earlier.” Either way, it's still two years away and a lot can change. However the film still has WandaVision director Matt Shakman at the helm. Del Barrio And Cronenberg Take Explorer To The Future By Rosco McQueen On November 17th, Blu Del Barrio will return in Discovery Season 4 as the human host of a Trill symbiote, Adira Tal. In an interview with new publication Star Trek Explorer, Del Barrio spoke about the positive reactions from fans in being the first nonbinary actor in the franchise, and bringing a non-binary character to the screen. Unfortunately for the actor, it meant they were also subject to some outdated attitudes, but they were few when compared to the overall welcome from the Star Trek community. “There are always people who are going to set out to be hateful, and set out to be transphobic. There's not a lot of Star Trek fans who are like that, thank God. It's not a universe where that fits. But there is also a lot of love, even from people who maybe don't know anyone who is trans. There are people who are asking questions, talking about things online, having actual conversations about it, which is really wonderful.” Image: ViacomCBS, via CBR. Also featured in the first issue of the relaunched Star Trek Explorer is an interview with director David Cronenberg who plays the role of Federation agent Kovich, who is returning for Discovery Season 4. The interview covers his relief as an actor as opposed to a director, growing up watching the Original Series, and the specific role of Kovich in season three as the Terran-interrogator. But Cronenberg was tight lipped on what's in store for Season 4: “I can only tell you I've been invited to be part of Season 4, and I was delighted with that. That's about all I can tell you, and it's not because I'm trying to be coy. It's because I don't know any more.” For the full interview, as well as feature interviews from Ian Alexander (Gray Tal from Discovery), be sure to trek out the first issue of Star Trek Explorer. In the Star Trek Multiverse this week: We ‘Trek Out’ Star Trek Discovery's "cigarette-smoking man," Gersha’s Mirror, how not easy it is to be green, and RUMORS. In Star Trek gaming, use the word Halcyon while previewing the new recon ships, before interviewing Star Trek Online’s Executive Producer Andre Emerson. Then we look “On Screen” to review Discovery’s Season 3 episode, “Terra Firma: Part 1”ry.” This Week’s Community Question is: CQ: What do you think of the Emerald Chain? Are they menacing, or do they leave something to be desired? Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan David Cronenberg is Back for Discovery Season 4 “The mysterious stranger” is a long running trope, but it’s a pretty cool one. The cigarette smoking man from “The X-Files” and Strider from “The Lord of the Rings” come to mind, men whose motivations are always in question . Now Star Trek has its own mysterious stranger, and just like so many others, he’s a riddle. We’re - of course - talking about David Cronenberg’s Kovich. This week, Cronenberg sat down with Variety to talk about his newest role. The Fly, directed by David Cronenberg, Via Bloodydisgusting.com Before the interview got rolling, Variety broke the exclusive news that Kovich - and by extension David Cronenberg - would not only appear in more season 3 episodes, but also return for Discovery season 4! The 77 year old Canadian director shared how he got the part of Kovich, telling Variety’s Adam Vary ”I’m cheap and I’m available. I live in Toronto, and it’s being shot in Toronto. I think that’s my main qualification. But I just got a note through people that I know, casting people, saying that [executive producer] Alex Kurtzman was really thinking of having me do a spot on the show. I said, of course, I’d be absolutely delighted.” Cronenberg noted that he was a Original Series fan, but only dabbled in the spin-offs - and hadn’t watched any of Discovery before joining the show. He never expected to be a part of the franchise, and when asked if he had interest in directing an episode of Star Trek, Cronenberg said bluntly ”No, really not. It’s a very different kind of directing. It’s almost like another job entirely, you know, and that’s another thing that I was very interested to see. [...] If I do direct again, it wouldn’t be to direct an episode of a series.” David Cronenberg as Kovich via Variety Gersha Phillips Looks in the Mirror - Or Something Like That SPOILER ALERT - if you haven’t seen Star Trek Discovery season 3 episode 9 “Terra Firma Part 1”, you may want to skip this story! Where starting...NOW Much like Georgiou went back to the Mirror Universe, we are going back to Variety. Okay, the two really aren’t that much alike, but you get what we’re going for. This time around - at Variety, not the Mirror Universe - we hear from Discovery’s Costume Designer, Gersha Phillips, and her re-imagining of the Mirror Universe uniforms. Burnham Via Variety Phillips talked about the challenges of her first go around with the Mirror Universe and her thoughts this time around, tellin Jazz Tangcay ”It’s supposed to be an alternative version of what took place the last time we were there the last time — the team said it was a few days before. The idea was the Emperor was in her prime. I called it the 2.0 version because this time we wanted to do it better. Last time, on our first pass there, we didn’t have the time or budget. I talked about wanting to elevate everything.” In talking about designing Georgiou’s look, Phillips may have dipped that Trek nugget, saying ”We knew we were going to jump into the future because of Michelle Yeoh, and how she was getting out of our world and into the ‘Section 31’ world which is the next series, so it was an early conversation,” If you’re interested in costume design, Phillips dives deep into the process, so be sure to trek out the link in our show notes for more! Georgiou via Variety Janet Kidder Reminds Us It Isn’t That Easy Being Green It's not that easy bein' green Having to pillage each day Hearing whining and pleas When I think it could be nicer Stealing dilithium or gold Without the moaning and griping like that Poor Osyraa, all that belly-aching she has to listen to! This week, Osyraa actress Janet Kidder sat down with comicbook.com to talk about her time in the green make-up, and what’s next for the leader of the Emerald Chain. Image of Janet Kidder as Osayraa Janet Kidder, niece of the late Margot Kidder, discussed Osyraa’s motivations telling Jamie Lovett ”The best for her people. How to create a powerful and a strong empire for the race that was typically enslaved. [...] I think it's about just striving to support her people. And I'm not saying that she makes the best choices in doing that. She's a tough cookie, but she definitely feels that she's doing it for the best for her people.” As for what’s next, Kidder says ”They can just definitely look forward to seeing more of her and possibly she puts on her business shoes later on, and you can see her actually stepping up and trying to put into action what she feels is motivating her. She'll be back. She'll be around. I think that she's a wonderful character and I just hope that everyone enjoys seeing her as much as I enjoyed playing her. And they'll see lots of fun stuff from her in later episodes.” Rumor Report! Finally this week - it’s the RUMOR REPORT! As is always the case, any story that shows up in the rumor report should be taken with a grain of salt - so with that said - Manifest! Our first story comes from the Spanish speaking Star Trek website NacionTrek. On December 9th, the team tweeted an image of a sign that read “Strange New Worlds. Cast and Crew Testing Area”. According to the translated tweet ”The pre-production of #StarTrekStrangeNewWorlds in Mississauga, Canada. Filming will begin in mid-February 2021.”. This hasn’t been confirmed by anyone anywhere, so we’re calling this a rumor; though the evidence - including production magazine listings - points to this being accurate. SQUEE!!! https://twitter.com/NacionTrek/status/1336832022766030851 Our next stop is Gossip site WeGotThisCovered.com. Scott Campbell is “reporting” that A-lister Chris Evan’s is in talks to appear in Star Trek. According to the site ”insider Daniel Richtman is claiming this week that Chris Evans is in talks to join Star Trek, but the tipster doesn’t expand on the role in question or even which one of the many projects in development he’s interested in.”. That’s it. That’s the rumor. Star Trek Gaming News by Thomas Reynolds & Shane Hoover A Re(con)naissance for Allied Shipbuilding By Thomas Reynolds Cast your minds back to the halcyon year of 2018: we were still hesitant about Anson Mount as Captain Pike (which in retrospect, whoo!). Picard had just been announced to great fanfare at STLV (which in retrospect, oof). And in 2411, Recon Destroyers hit Star Trek Online and proved that you could never have too many nacelles. The Lafayette and Kefka Ketha classes put a jubilant cadence in our hearts, yet allied factions were left out of the fun. At long last, Cryptic has addressed that imbalance with the Jem’Hadar Vanguard and Romulan Rahhae Recon Destroyers. Now Dominion and Republic captains can unleash hyper-trinary hell on unlucky targets in a faction flavor-appropriate manner. The Rahhae and Vanguard Recon Destroyers are, in all other respects, identical to their Fed and KDF counterparts. For our overall impression of the Recon Destroyer class, slingshot around to Episode 379 of Priority One Podcast. Recon Ships Via Star Trek Online Ship Packs on Earth and Goodwill Towards Players By Thomas Reynolds Well captains, have you been good this year? Yes? No? Is humanity a dangerous, savage child race and all morality an artificial construct anyway? Who cares! It’s time to buy stuff! Until January 3rd, Cryptic is selling packs of 3 T6 Ship Coupons and 3 Experimental Ship Upgrades for 7500 Zen. But before you drop that Zen, know that price will change during sales that just might happen during that time. You might want to wait and see if this already great deal gets even better. T6 Coupn image Via Star Trek Online Do Bad Robots Make Good Games? By Shane Hoover As recently reported by Variety.com, J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot has made a significant hiring to boot up its in-house gaming studio. Bad Robot Games has hired Mike Booth to GM the new studio tied to the Bad Robot production company. Booth was most recently at Facebook as social VR director, though he’s perhaps most well known as the creator and lead designer of the game “Left 4 Dead.” Reporting to Bad Robot Games CEO, Anna Sweet, Booth is tasked with developing original games to accompany Bad Robot’s film and TV projects. Booth has this to say about his new position, My career has been driven by a desire to innovate new ways of bringing people together for epic adventures online, leaving them with exciting stories they can tell their friends afterwards. The games I create center around people working together to survive and thrive in fantastic worlds, which seems an excellent fit for J.J. Abrams’ approach to movie making. Mike Booth Via Variety

Today we talk about the first part of Star Trek Discovery's first traditional two-parter. It's a character study of Georgiou and it takes us back to the mirror universe. Meanwhile, Stamets and Adira continue to uncover new information about the source of the burn. ----more---- Transcript Welcome to Nerd Heaven I’m Adam David Collings, the author of Jewel of The Stars. And I am a nerd. This is episode 46 of the podcast. Today we’re talking about Star Trek Discovery Terra Firma Part 1. But just before we launch into that, did you hear about all the new Star Wars shows that Disney+ just announced? They announced 7 new TV shows. Combined with The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi, that’s a total of 9 shows. We currently have 6 Star Trek shows either already on the air, or in various stages of pre-production. That’s a whole lot of sci-fi entertainment. Now … if only we can get an official green light on the new Stargate show they have in the works. That would be awesome. But as I said, today, we’re talking Star Trek. The description on memory alpha reads The USS Discovery crew journeys to a mysterious planet in hopes of finding a cure for Georgiou's deteriorating condition. Stamets and Adira make a stunning breakthrough with the newly acquired Burn data. The teleplay for this episode was written by Alan McElroy based on a story by Bo Yeon Kim, Erika Lippoldt & Alan McElroy It was directed by Omar Madha And it first aired on the 10th of December 2020. Make it so. This episode has a big Georgiou focus. We open with Culbert seeking advice from the Starfleet interrogator. The one that was questioning Georgiou a few episodes back. Apparently, the character’s name is Kovich, although I don’t think that’s ever been said out loud in-universe. A lot of people have been referring to him by the name of the actor playing him. A guy named David Cronenberg. He sounds like a big deal. I’m not familiar with him myself. I actually thought he reminded me a little of British actor Bill Nyee. Some people have even theorised that he’s section 31, which is a reasonable theory, but certainly not yet canonised. Why Culbert goes to Kovich, I’m not sure. But it turns out, he has all the answers we’ve been looking for. It turns out to be a case of temporal displacement. Our molecules like to remain in the time they were created. But the whole crew have travelled 900 years into the future, and they’re all fine. But Georgiou not only travelled in time, she’s also from another universe. A universe which has been growing ever further apart from ours. Every molecule in her body is screaming to return home. So the hologram theory is out. And then Kovich activates a holographic image of Lieutenant Commander Yor, a deceased time soldier from the Temporal War. And he’s wearing a Next Generation season 1 uniform, with the shoulder stripes. IT was delightful to see this nostalgic old uniform on Discovery. Do you notice that Discovery is paying a whole lot more respect to TNG than it ever did to TOS? But I was all set to have a good old nitpick about this. You see, I’d seen images from an episode preview, that they show in America, which clearly showed Tor in this uniform, but with a Voyager-style com badge. That com badge didn’t come into effect until 2371, which would have been the 8th season of TNG. It was never worn with this particular uniform. Now Kovich says something that can explain it shortly, which we’ll get to in just a sec. But I noticed in my second watch of the episode, that they’ve edited it. They’ve put in the proper TNG com badge that matches this uniform. That must have been a digital effect. It’s a silly mistake that should never have been made, but I’m glad they sorted it out. But Kovich explains that Tor is from the year 2379. Okay. So that means the Voyager com badge was correct, but the uniform was dead wrong. 2379, the year Star Trek Nemesis was set. But then he says something that changes everything.Tor came from an alternate universe created by a temporal incursion caused by a Romulan mining ship. Whoa. So Tor is from the Kelvin universe. This is huge. This is the first outright acknowledgement of the Kelvin universe from the prime universe. This is also our first canon look at someone from the TNG era of the Kelvin universe. So apparently, over there, they didn’t change uniforms near as often as they did here in the prime. They skipped the TNG season 3 uniform, the Voyager/deep space nine uniform, and the First Contact uniform. This is really interesting. So this also means that the Kelvin universe was involved in the temporal wars. Which kinda makes sense. That war was all about temporal incursions and creating new timelines. Although Enterprise used a different concept of time-travel than what Star Trek 2009 did, but let’s just leave that aside. So yeah, wonderful to see that uniform, and fascinating to get a connection with the Kelvin timeline. Sadly, things didn’t turn out well for poor old Tor. He ended up in so much pain the Federation petitioned for euthenasia. They couldn’t send him back to his own universe, because to do so would violate the temporal acords, which were taken very seriously. That doesn’t bode well for Georgiou, because it means Starfleet won’t allow her to return home either. Kovich doesn’t want Goergiou to know of her fate. A dying Terran’s instinct is to find a way to die in battle. Much like a Klingon. Nobody wants that loose on Discovery. He recommends sedation and locking her up. But Culbert, the good doctor as ever, asks the computer to find another solution, combining all additional data that Discovery had, which obviously includes the sphere data. And, much to Kovich’s surprise, it’s found another option. Meanwhile, Gorgeous can’t even pick up a glass, because her hand goes straight through it. I kinda like how Georgiou refers to Tilly as Saru’s walking command blunder, echoing what a lot of people have said, that her promotion makes no sense. Tilly is awesome, but she’s not ready for first officer yet. The sphere data says the solution is on Dannus Five. A world near the border between the alpha and gamma quadrants. It’s still only a 5 percent chance for her, but better than zero. I like the way Discovery has been using the sphere data this season. Remember back in Voyager ,when an alien entity put gigaquads of information about the universe into the ship’s computer, and it was never mentioned again? That was an absolute travesty. Discovery is still probably under-selling the usefulness of this data but it’s doing a significantly better job than Voyager did. Saru is inclined to not ignore Goergiou’s plight. The Emerald Chain are conducting exercises near Federation space and Starfleet are on yellow alert. But Vance is willing to authorise the mission on one condition. That Michael assures him she can let go of Georgiou when the time comes, because the odds are not good. She hesitated when she had to sacrifice Arium. Vance wants to know that she won’t hesitate again. And she gives him her word. This has got to be one of the hardest parts of being a starfleet officer. The willingness to sacrifice a life to save a crew. I don’t think I could handle being in a situation like that. I don’t think I have what it takes to make a tough call like that. Especially when it’s somebody you care about. We see a very good conversation play out between Vance and Saru. Saru is trying really hard to be the good reliable captain. He doesn’t want to let Vance down. He wants to prove that he can be trusted to serve the needs of this new Starfleet. That’s why he was willing to sacrifice Georgiou and forgo the mission altogether. Vance explosions a little of his backstory. He made a lot of mistakes over the course of his career. One thing he’s learned is that if a crewmember is drowning, and you let her, the crew will never look at their captain, or the Federation, the same way again. The hard pragmatic choice is not always the right one. You have to have heart and compassion. You have to treat your crew as people. Any captain needs a little bit of Kirk in him. I love this scene. I’m loving Saru’s arc through this season as he learns to be a better captain. And I’m really liking Vance as a character more and more. Georgiou’s vulnerability is really poking through the cracks of her bravado. We’re seeing past the tough emperor to the scared little girl inside her. She doesn’t see much hope for success in this plan. She wants an honourable death. She wants Michael to kill her. But Michael’s having none of it. This episode is really showing us what Michelle Yeoh can do as an actor. We also get a little backstory about mirror Burnham. Apparently Georgiou picked her up from a rubbish heap. We get a pretty heart-warming farewell to Georgious from both Saru and Tilly. Georgiou has come a long way so that she can look Saru in the eye and call him captain. When they first met, she saw him as nothing but dinner. So they beam down to the planet. It’s a pretty icy place. And I love the visible rings in the sky. I doubt it’s scientifically accurate, but it looks awesome. As much as I like their trek through the snow, why didn’t they beam directly to the coordinates? Why beam down close and then walk, following the tricorder’s directions? Now we cut back to the overall season plot with the burn. Honestly, I was expecting this two-parter to be all about the burn. Learning what was in the centre of the nebula. I wasn’t expecting a character study of Georgiou, or a re-examination of the mirror universe, although, given the episode title, I probably should have connected Terra with the mirror universe. Anyway, Adira is still trying to use the algorithm to decipher the starfleet distress call. Stammets notices that Adira is exhausted and has made a silly mistake, which has cost them hours of wasted effort. Adira is really frustrated by this. It’s the same old story. Starfleet officer becomes obsessed with a task and refuses to sleep. But in this case, we see realistic consequences. And I really like that. As a computer programmer, I often make stupid mistakes like this which take hours to hunt down. And that’s when I’m not sleep-deprived. It happens. Gray is still not speaking but Adira is apparently not angry, although facial expressions may suggest otherwise. Stammets points out that Gray wanted Adira to make more ties with the outside world. Friends. Maybe that’s why he’s hiding. Adira makes a good point. “He doesn’t get to decide what’s good for me.” It feels a bit manipulative, especially for the disembodied spirit of a dead person. And the algorithm has finished. While on his way to find out what Stammets and Adira have uncovered, Saru has a chat with Book. Books wants in. He wants to help the crew of Discovery. But he wants to do it on his own terms. Saru isn’t interested in that. I’m not sure exactly what Saru is expecting. Putting on a Starfleet uniform and joining the crew perhaps? Which may require training at whatever the equivalent of Starfleet Academy is these days. I think it’s going to take a while for Book to really find his place, and it’ll take a little bending on both sides. It turns out, the ship stuck in the nebula is Kalpien. So a few years before the burn, their ship got stranded in the nebula. Another ship was coming to rescue them. The end of the message is sadly lost. A lot of people were theorising that it was actually discovery in that nebula, trying to tie it into the short trek Calypso. That made a lot of sense, but I’m kinda glad that’s not where the show is taking us. That would have just been another case of “The red angel is actually michael.” I used to enjoy that trope, but it’s getting a bit old, to be honest. This Kelpien thing is interesting, because it’s an unexpected development. I’m keen to learn more about that happened, and what they may have had to do with the burn. Gorgeou keeps comparing Michael to her mirror counterpart. The reason she picked Burnham from that rubbish pile was that she was the only one not begging for help. She was prepared to be her own salvation, and Georgiou respected that. It’s interesting. Georgiou clearly had a desire to experience motherhood. So there was always some form of humanity in her. She probably wasn’t able to have children biologically. But her choice to pick someone from a rubbish heap is interesting. She wasn’t there to do charity work. If she’d really cared about helping kids out of poverty, she’d have rescued the mall. She certainly had that within her power as emperor. But she ignored all the pleas and just took Michael. But why not adopt some other way. I don’t think we have enough insight into her character to really understand this yet. This is where things get … interesting. They find a wooden door just sitting in the snow, and a man dressed in 1940s style clothes, smoking a cigar and sitting on a park bench reading a newspaper, which claims “Emperor Georgiou dies horribly painful death. The newspaper is called The Star Dispatch. Who is this bloke? He offers Georgiou a doorway into her own past. Back into the mirror universe. I can only assume he is a Q. This is totally their style. The episode keeps the truth of this character pretty close to its chest. We will probably learn the truth next episode. I’ll probably be disappointed if it’s anything other than the Q. Because I can’t see anything else making sense. Anyway, the guy calls himself Carl. He tells a few really punny dad jokes, and then makes it clear the door is for Georgiou to walk through. He makes an interesting statement. The door doesn’t lead. It follows. Does that mean that Georgiou plays a big part in determining what she’ll experience? Her past in the mirror universe, and her relationship with mirror burnham are clearly on her mind, so it makes sense she’d lead the experience where it goes. I tried to pause the episode and read some of the other headlines in the newspaper, but it was too blurry. Michael wants answers, but Carl says the question needs to proceed. It’s dangerous to go the other way around. Now, apart from giving me some Hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy vibes, this suggests to me that Georgiou is not yet sure what exactly she’s seeking, or what question she needs to answer. She’s about to go on a journey of self-discovery. Michael rather illogically wants to return to Discovery. This is what they came down for. This is what the sphere data lead them to. So she steps through and finds herself in the mirror universe. Onboard the USS Discovery. Being welcomed by captain Killy. This is actually the first time we’ve seen Mary Wiseman play Killy. We’ve seen prime Tilly try to impersonate Killy, but that’s all. It takes Georgiou a moment to adapt to her settings, but she quickly realises she’s in the past. This is the day they christened the Charon. The day Lorca and Michael betrayed her. Now I’ve been complaining a little bit that over seasons 2 and 3, Gorgeous just doesn’t seem evil enough. She’s the mirror universe emperor. She’s ruthless and cares nothing over taking lives. She eats Kelpiens. But I’m seeing through this episode that they’re taking her character in a new way. They’re showing that her time in the prime universe has changed her. More than she had realised. And that’s cool. So they’ve actually won me over. I mean, they could have done a better job of portraying her as a little more evil throughout season 2, but I’ll buy that he time in the prime universe has slowly made her a better person. I just felt like it happened too rapidly and suddenly. But this episode is really highlighting how she’s changed. She misses her own Michael, regrets killing her. She tells Tilly she wants to bring Michael back into the fold. But as we’ll soon learn, in Michael’s eyes, Georgiou was already becoming weak. Not as ruthless as a Terran emperor should be. Even before she met anyone from our universe, she was already softening. Initially, we saw her from the perspective of the prime characters, so she looked like a monster. But now, seeing her through mirror Michael’s eyes, she is an old softy. It’s fascinating. And it’s pretty well done. This episode is also the first time we see mirror burnham. Sonequa Martin Green plays her wonderfully ruthless. And it’s also an excuse to bring back Landry from season 1, played by BattleStar galactica’s Rekha Sharma. Mirror brnham really hates Kelpiens. When she calls for Saru to be killed and cooked for dessert, Georgiou intervenes. This is the moment we realise just how much Georgiou has changed. She can’t just sit by and watch while Saru, a man she seems to have come to respect, is treated like meat. The Terrans have basically taken on the role of the Bau’ul in the mirror universe. They kill kepliens before they can finish going through vahari. That makes them much easier to enslave, obviously. And Saru ends up being a useful source of intelligence for Gergiou. But Georgiou has a problem. We’ve learned the reason Michael and Lorca tried to overthrow her was because of her weakness. But now, given the way she’s changed, she’s more weak, not less, (at least in the way that the mirror universe defines weakness) Gorgeou keeps trying to drop hints about the importance of loyalty. I think Michael knows she knows. It turns out that mirror stamets was in league with Lorca and Michael. But Georgiou knows this. She kills Stamets, which is the first major change to history. So we have to ask. Is she actually in the past, changing the timeline? Or is this all one big illusion, as the Q often like to play with? We won’t really know until next week. Given how much ambition she’s supposed to have, I’m surprised Killy hasn’t tried to overthrow Georgiou. But she’s smart. She probably figures she can gain more power by siding with the emperor against Lora and Michael, cementing herself as a trusted captain. Georgiou offers to let Michael live, if she’ll confess. This is why Michael tried to kill her in the first place. The weakness she has seen in her mother. Gorgeous says don’t confuse weakness with growth. And this is actually how we’d see this from a prime universe perspective. We don’t see compassion as a weakness. We see it as a strength. A virtue. Something to be applauded. Georgiou has learned that from us, but it’s a lesson that won’t serve her well in the mirror universe. She’s not really sure what she’s supposed to be accomplishing here. But she’s been given a chance to go back and do things differently. And she’s taking it. And now we get to understand Michael’s adoption from her own perspective. She was a master of that rubbish heap. But now, she’s forever in her mother’s shadow. Lorca loves her for her. But, of course, he doesn’t. She’s just a tool to get at Georgiou. When goaded into executing Michael, Georgiou can’t do it. She spares her daughter. As of this moment, their future is unwritten. I think Owo is unconvinced. She may be the next one to turn. I spent the whole second half of this episode waiting to see if Jason Isaacs would return as Lorca. I really expected to see him in the last few minutes. But that didn’t happen. So what do you think? Will he turn up part 2? This was not what I was expecting from Discovery’s first traditional two-parter. I really didn’t think we’d ever be going back to the mirror universe. But I enjoyed it. It was kinda cool to see it again and to get to see some of the characters we’ve heard about but have never seen. I think in a lot of ways, this episode is setting up Georgiou to be ready to helm the section 31 series. Making her a better person, so she can believably be the hero that we root for. A lot of people have been assuming she has to go back to the 23rd century because they assume that’s when the show will be set. But I’ve never been convinced of that. I mean, the reason they brought Discovery into the future was so that the show didn’t have to trample all over TOS canon. If they go back and do section 31 in that time, it kinda defeats the purpose. I know Strange New Worlds will be set in that time, but its exploration focus will make it a lot more insular. It’ll be less likely to stomp all over canon. I have mixed feelings about the section 31 show. I love Georgiou, and I love section 31, but I’m not a fan of what discovery did with the organisation in season 2. So I suppose I should clarify that I love section 31 as it was portrayed in Deep Space Nine. Can this show redeem what discovery season 2 did? Maybe. We’ll see. Anyway, I’m really looking forward to next week. It should be fun to see how things are going to be resolved. Next week, of course, we’ll be talking about Terra Firma Part 2. We’re getting close to the end of the season. It’ll all be finished in early January. I’m looking forward to the Christmas holidays. It’s been a long year and I’m exhausted. I’m gonna have 3 weeks off work, which will be nice, and should allow me some time to catch up with my writing. At present, this podcast basically takes up all of my creative time and energy. And I really need to get Jewel of The Stars book 3 out soon. Speaking of which you can grab book 1 for just 99 cents at books2read.com/jewel. It’s basically Star Trek but on a cruise ship. Well, I’m tired and I can’t think of anything else to say, other than Live long and prosper. Make it so.

Vance admirális új küldetésre vezényli a 32. századi technológiával feljavított Discoveryt, Burnham azonban olyan mellékküldetésre indul, mely semmibe veszi Saru utasítását. Tony and Laurie talk about Anson Mount joining METI, Simon Pegg patching things up with Quentin Tarantino, and Kovich theories. Then they get into the nitty gritty of Star Trek: Discovery’s “Scavengers,” which strikes them both as a mixed bag, and head down a few nerdy rabbit holes along the way.
