As a parent, do you practice self-care? How does practicing emotional regulation as an adult make you a better parent? What can therapists do to help stressed-out parents who deal with unhappy children? MEET AARON HUEYAaron has been working with children, teens, and parents for over 18 years. After ten years directing camps and empowerment programs around the world, Aaron opened https://firemountainprograms.com/ (Fire Mountain) because he wanted to work with kids and families on a deeper level. Over the first few years of running programs like Teen Rites of Passage, Aaron realized the need to turn his efforts towards teens struggling with drugs, alcohol, and the behaviors and issues related to addiction. Aaron's formal educational background is in acting. He graduated from the top acting school in the US, The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1990. IN THIS PODCAST:How unregulated parents negatively impact their children Parents need to learn how to regulate Practice adult relationship care How therapists can help parents of high-risk kids How unregulated parents negatively impact their children Some parents get into the bad habit of taking their anger and frustration out on their children when they are young. As the children age, they learn how to retaliate and treat the parents the same way, which of course upsets the parents even more. What we do as parents when we feel defensive and attacked is that we escalate, and I see parents escalating the situation as much as I see children escalating. It's an emotional escalation because … we don't [always] have emotional intelligence. (Aaron Huey) When parents are stressed, have not slept well, have not eaten well, are worried about their children, have work issues and so forth, they do not make the best decisions. If in those moments their children ask something of them or push them too far, parents can often snap and yell unnecessarily at their kids. This behavior is then learned by children as the way to behave in these situations. If we're not sleeping, eating [well], or drinking enough water, or if we're not breathing on purpose and we're not moving our bodies, we are in survival mode because you cannot accidentally be a good parent when your child is in crisis … your best parenting from survival is not good parenting. (Aaron Huey) Parents need to learn how to regulateSomewhere we have anchored that emotions are a pivot point, but [they're] not. They make it worse. You're not going to make a good decision from an emotional place … the thing about emotions is that they change, they're fluid, they're not static. (Aaron Huey) Even a good fluid parenting decision in a crisis is a bad one. Parents must address their self-care. By regulating themselves, parents will be less likely to flip in a crisis and make poor, emotional decisions. Practice adult relationship careIf both parents or partners are unregulated, have not cared for themselves, and act solely based on their emotions, then it is highly likely that their adult relationship has also suffered. Have you gone on a date with your spouse? Have you gone to coffee with your [parenting] ex and you're still trying to make things work with your parenting stuff? Tend to [your]...

Like... with science? ...and every left hook question I could think of to understand this...woo-woo stuff. Melody Watts thinks so and I brought her on the air to talk about ANOTHER tool we could use. Nine years ago Melody Watts began her journey of self-discovery and healing following a perfect storm of malady, tragedy, and bad luck. Diagnosed with a debilitating form of Lyme disease while struggling through a tumultuous divorce, she simultaneously lost her mother in a tragic car accident. To exacerbate matters she was imprisoned on a baseless technicality and spent 7-months behind penitentiary bars. Upon release, Melody was introduced to doTERRA essential oils, through a close friend while seeking alternative advice for her son's recurrent cough. Miraculously, the essential oils worked and Melody's perspective of holistic healthcare was altered forever. Shortly thereafter, she officially joined doTERRA in 2013 and by 2015 was top 1% in sales in all of doTERRA. By 2019 Melody sold over $22-million per year and helped thousands of business owners accomplish financial freedom.  Melody lives in Meridian, Idaho with her husband Walter and her four children and two horses.   THANK YOU for listening, liking, subscribing, sharing, and leaving a review for Beyond Risk and Back!

This is a-rockin' conversation with a great guy who is wired to "on." He's a force for major change in people's lives in an area where few dare to tread. His work is with parents and teens who are not at "at risk" in that the risk is a possible future event but are in fact in danger, actively engaged in behavior impacting their well-being. That's why he calls his work "Beyond Risk and Back." I think you'll agree this is courageous, powerful, and inspiring. He dives into the hard stuff without hesitating. This show is a good example of what happens when two people have a good, authentic, and immediate rapport as we had a great time and I think it shows. Check it out. Whether you're heading to Florida for vacation or just want to feel like you're in Florida, these 10 books will give you a great picture of the Sunshine State. (Amazon links are used for your convenience. If a purchase is made through one of my links, I will be minimally compensated at no expense to you.) Books Mentioned in this episode: 1. A Suite Deal by Kay Sisk - Romantic Comedy/ Orlando It's not enough that the perky redhead has been in his way from Dallas to Orlando, but now a hotel suite mix-up has David White sharing a living room with her, her mother and her niece. How's a man supposed to conduct business at the convenience store convention and still have time to prep for a job interview with WOTs-New-Now's president? Somehow wanting to jump ship from his dead-end job has him jumping through hoops for her instead. 2. Paper Towns by John Green - Realistic Fiction/ Christmas, FL  When Margo Roth Spiegelman beckons Quentin Jacobsen in the middle of the night—dressed like a ninja and plotting an ingenious campaign of revenge—he follows her. Margo's always planned extravagantly, and, until now, she's always planned solo. After a lifetime of loving Margo from afar, things are finally looking up for Q . . . until day breaks and she has vanished. Always an enigma, Margo has now become a mystery. But there are clues. And they're for Q. 3. Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard - Noir Crime / West Palm Beach & Miami This book is set about a not-altogether-blameless flight attendant on the run from her vicious gun-running sometimes employer who sees her as a troublesome loose end. This book was adapted for the big screen in Jackie Brown, which was directed by Quentin Tarantino and starred Pam Grier, Robert DeNiro, and Samuel L Jackson! But, if you've seen the movie, be prepared because there are some big differences between the book & the movie! The second book in a two-book series. The first is called The Switch about a kidnapping that went wrong.   4. Beyond Risk by Connie Mann - Romantic Suspense / Ocala Forest Former Fish & Wildlife Officer Charlotte "Charlee" Tanner still carries the guilt of a tragic drowning accident that occurred on her watch. She hoped moving back home to the wilds of central Florida would provide a safe haven-until she learns the death was no accident, and she's the intended target. Tough and decisive, Lieutenant Hunter Boudreau loves his new job as a law enforcement officer with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission. Charlee is his best friend, so when she comes under fire, he's not letting her out of his sight until the killer is caught. But Charlee won't sit by and let anyone else die for her. As danger closes in and Charlee and Hunter's attraction threatens to consume them, Charlee has to decide if she can trust Hunter. And to save Charlee, Hunter will have to trust her, too.   5. Tourist Season by Carl Hiaasen - PI/Mystery  - Miami The first sign of trouble is a Shriner's fez washed up on a Miami beach. The next is a suitcase containing the almost-legless body of the local chamber of commerce president found floating in a canal... The locals are desperate to keep the murders under wraps and the tourist money flowing. But it will take a reporter-turned–private eye to make sense of a caper that mixes football players, politicians, and one very hungry crocodile in this classic mystery.   6. A Secret in the Keys by Hope Holloway - women's fiction / Coconut Key The last thing Beck Foster wants to do is attend a party for her estranged aunt in the Florida Keys. One month earlier, Beck's seemingly ideal existence imploded when her husband of thirty-four years announced he was leaving her. Now, she has to sell her house, get a job, and somehow put her broken heart and life back together. She can't do all that if she runs off to visit a woman she barely remembers. Or can she? Accompanied by her grown daughter who also longs for an escape, Beck heads to Coconut Key, where she'd lived the earliest years of her life. There, she forges a life-changing relationship with a woman she never really understood, dips her toes into the waters of a new romance, and begins the process of starting over. But when a secret kept for nearly fifty years comes crashing down on them, all of Beck's dreams are once again threatened. Can she forgive the lies that have shaped her life, or will the past ruin her chance at a new beginning in Coconut Key?   7. The Last Train to Key West by Chanel Cleeton - Key West/ historical fiction For the tourists traveling on Henry Flagler's legendary Overseas Railroad, Labor Day weekend is an opportunity to forget the economic depression gripping the nation. But one person's paradise can be another's prison, and Key West-native Helen Berner yearns to escape.  After the Cuban Revolution of 1933 leaves Mirta Perez's family in a precarious position, she agrees to an arranged marriage with a notorious American. Following her wedding in Havana, Mirta arrives in the Keys on her honeymoon. While she can't deny the growing attraction to her new husband, his illicit business interests may threaten not only her relationship but her life.  Elizabeth Preston's trip to Key West is a chance to save her once-wealthy family from their troubles after the Wall Street crash. Her quest takes her to the camps occupied by veterans of the Great War and pairs her with an unlikely ally on a treacherous hunt of his own.  Over the course of the holiday weekend, the women's paths cross unexpectedly, and the danger swirling around them is matched only by the terrifying force of the deadly storm threatening the Keys. 8. Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom by Cory Doctorow - Disney / SciFi Fantasy Jules is a young man barely a century old. He's lived long enough to see the cure for death and the end of scarcity, to learn ten languages and compose three symphonies...and to realize his boyhood dream of taking up residence in Disney World. Disney World! The greatest artistic achievement of the long-ago twentieth century. Now in the care of a network of volunteer "ad-hocs" who keep the classic attractions running as they always have, enhanced with only the smallest high-tech touches. Now, though, it seems the "ad hocs" are under attack. A new group has taken over the Hall of the Presidents and is replacing its venerable audio-animatronics with new, immersive direct-to-brain interfaces that give guests the illusion of being Washington, Lincoln, and all the others. For Jules, this is an attack on the artistic purity of Disney World itself. Worse: it appears this new group has had Jules killed. This upsets him. (It's only his fourth death and revival, after all.) Now it's war: war for the soul of the Magic Kingdom, a war of ever-shifting reputations, technical wizardry, and entirely unpredictable outcomes.   9. Kingdom Keepers by Ridley Pearson Five young teens tapped as models for theme park “guides” (using a new hologram technology developed by the Disney Imagineers) find themselves pitted against Disney villains and witches that threaten both the future of Walt Disney World and the stability of the world outside its walls. Featuring a new cover design and additional content!   10. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling While not set in Florida, you can head to Universal Studios and ride the Hogwarts Express, visit Hogsmeade & Diagon Alley, and of course, Hogwarts.   Links from this episode: The Literary Escape Society Books Set in Florida blog post

Slaying the Dragon of Family Trauma: The Root of Why Your Child Struggles With Addiction

I Love Being Sober

Aaron Huey discusses what it takes for parents to raise a healthy child and the root cause of a lot of the dysfunction we see in our children’s modern lives. Learn how epigenetic trauma is impacting your child’s life, why freedom and privacy are actually making their problems worse, and why treatment is pointless if the whole family isn’t committed to the recovery process. Aaron Huey is an internationally known lecturer on archetypal imagery, body language, and martial arts as well as the Founder and President of Fire Mountain Programs. Aaron grew up in a small town in Colorado with two hard-working parents. During his childhood, Aaron had spent a very small amount of time with his biological father, and despite having an excellent stepfather, Aaron still went down a risky path. Having a surrogate dad that was amazing didn’t change the wound underneath it all. Partaking in drugs and alcohol was mainly experimental until Aaron went into acting school and was sexually assaulted by his roommate. After that experience Aaron found himself pursuing drugs and alcohol more aggressively in an effort to simply feel happy again. Because there is so much that teenagers can hide from their parents, they need to be extra attentive to any sort of trauma that could result in maladaptive coping strategies. Trauma is the gateway. If something is going to cause pain on a daily basis and the child is not provided with a healthy coping strategy they will come up with a maladaptive strategy. The bottom line truth is that when Aaron was sober he was sad and when he was high he was happy. As he moved into his 20’s it simply became the way he lived his life. Abandonment, Abuse, and Assault are the foundations for Trauma with a capital T. Trauma can be epigenetic as well, studies are showing that family trauma can be passed down for 12 generations. There are different layers of trauma and not all kids will be affected by traumatic events the same way. There is a level of privacy that we afford our kids that is detrimental to our relationships. The third most popular page on the Fire Mountain website is How to Search Your Kids Room. Parents should control the password to their kids’ phones and be more involved in their children’s lives. Parents need to intervene often and early. Do not wait until something is drastically wrong before taking action and looking into what’s happening. We need to play the long game as parents and be willing to have conflict with our children early on. Freedom is important, but not for children. Children need a safe controlled environment where the parents know what’s going on. Parenting is a long term investment. Lying, sneaking, cheating, stealing, and breaking the law are the five big actions that you need to look out for. If the child can avoid those things, you can allow more kinds of freedom in their life. If one of those actions is present, there is almost certainly an underlying issue that needs to be addressed immediately. Kids aren’t making bad choices, they are making the choices that get their needs met. The key to the recovery process is showing people how to get their needs met in a healthy way. Smoking and drinking and drug abuse aren’t the problem, they’re the solution to the problem. Aaron tells the story of how he left California and moved to Colorado, how his first wife left him while he worked a renaissance festival as security, and his experience hitting rock bottom. A year and a half into recovery is where the real work began for Aaron and now he’s more than happy to be sober and clean and living a healthy connected life with his kids and new relationships. Aaron’s parents didn’t get to see the levels of how he was hurting himself, but they did get to see the healing process. Guilt and shame are the twin pillars that hold up the roof of shame. Aaron doesn’t recommend that children under the age of 18 go to a 12 step meeting because they don’t have the developmental tools to benefit from it. Children require a different approach. After an adolescent treatment, the family needs to go into 12 step meetings together. The biggest missing component in a children’s recovery is family recovery. There is no bad child, just broken systems. There is no trauma that a child can go through that hasn’t affected the entire family. If the system stays broken, the child will return to a broken state. You can expect a child to fix a family issue. As a parent, if you haven’t done the work on yourself when your child comes back speaking the language of recovery, you are going to pull them back into sickness. If you’re not taking care of your relationships and your support system, you’re going to have issues helping your child with their problems. The whole family needs to get into recovery. What do you need to do to refill your empty cup as a parent so that you can support your child? Nothing happens well without self-care. You can’t do the right thing if you haven’t taken care of yourself. Your adult relationships need to be tended to. Who else knows what’s going on in your life?   Mentioned in this Episode: firemountainprograms.com Beyond Risk and Back podcast

An addict in recovery since 2000, he felt a calling to put together an expert team and open Fire Mountain. His mission is to awaken confidence and leadership. “It‘s not about being better, it‘s about giving up the struggle to be different from who you are.”Aaron’s formal educational background is in acting. He graduated from the top acting school in the US, The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1990. His skills in comedy and drama make him an influential speaker and presenter, and a favorite among the kids. Host of Beyond Risk and Back and founder of www.firemountainprograms.com, Aaron Huey, interviews Chester Simmons, a young man that learned how to overcome dyslexia and ADD. Tune in to hear an amazing perspective for parents: What is it like to have Dyslexia? Do you grow out of it? How does it affect ones social life? What helps? Aaron and Chester talk about dyslexia from the perspective of learning from someone who grew up and continues to evolve while at the same time “being cool with it”. Chester lived in the Denver Area most of his life. He has been aware of his Dyslexia and ADD since the summer before the 4ht grade. He was reluctant to receive the help that he needed because at times it made him feel different than his peers. His reluctance to receive help definitely made school a struggle. When Chester was in college he captained the CU Denver Club Soccer Team, and was a student officer. In sports he found an outlet to shine, away from the struggles of school he was able to focus and excel at what he did. He dedicated himself at that time to help youth who struggle with school. He now runs an after school program that helps youths in the correctional system stay out of trouble during high risk hours.

Aaron Huey, founder of Firemountain Residential Treatment Center and host of Beyond Risk and Back, discusses how important it is to take care of the adult relationships in your life. This is a part of taking care of your kids - an important part. When we neglect our own self-care in order to take care of our children or anyone else, the example we set for our kids is that their own self-care can take a backseat. All of those relationships in our lives as adults such as with our ex-partners, coparents, extended family members, and so on are important and deserve healthy maintenance. www.firemountainprograms.com

Your host Aaron Huey and author Johnnie Calloway get real about addiction, recovery, sexual abuse, hitting rock bottom and making that life altering choice for personal transformation. Two strong men with powerful voices holding absolutely nothing back on this dynamic first podcast episode of Beyond Risk and Back.Johnnie Calloway grew up in a small town in Kentucky, with the population at around 11,000. His mother passed when he was only five, leaving him to grow up with an angry, alcoholic, sexually confused father.Johnnie was born into a reputation that he never wanted but was obligated to live up to. Still, Johnnie always wanted to be the “good guy.” The conflict between his personal desire and his sense of obligation to his dad’s/family’s reputation created a great torment that was oddly accompanied with an insatiable yearning to learn.Eventually, Johnnie became a seeker of truth. And has now devoted himself to sharing what his seeking has taught him with others. He has written two books, “Taming the Dragon” and Dragons to Butterflies: The Metamorphosis of a Man, and is currently working on, “Within the Chrysalis, It’s an Inside Job”.www.johnniecalloway.comwww.firemountainprograms.com
