Beth Vukmanic Lopez manages the Sustainability in Practice (SIP) certification program. Beth Vukmanic Lopez graduated from California Polytechnic State University with a Bachelors of Science in Agribusiness, Marketing Concentration and minor in Music. Beth joined the Vineyard Team in July 2009 and has thoroughly enjoyed overseeing the development and growth of the SIP Certified program. Sustainability in Practice (SIP) Certified helps farmers and winemakers demonstrate their dedication to preserving and protecting natural and human resources. SIP Certified is a rigorous sustainable vineyard and winery certification with strict, non-negotiable requirements, committed to standards based on science and expert input, independent verification, transparency, and absence of conflict of interest. Beth Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: The SIP Certified certification program. Why business owners go for sustainability certifications. The evolution of sustainability in the wine industry. Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders. Beth's Final Five Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? It's a really good question. I was thinking about this and from my side of working for a nonprofit, we have this really wonderful connection with all of our committees and our board members and our participants, and so you just have access to so many different people who are experts on a lot of different things. I just feel like that's been such a huge benefit for my position here. And even if you weren't working for a nonprofit, just thinking about all the people that you know because we all have great information to share with each other. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? Well, like I mentioned before, I think the most exciting thing is this constant work being done to do better. So getting that opportunity to go out into the field with the farmers a couple of months ago and see all of this different technology that's being trialed, different grape varieties that are being trialed, different cover crops that are being trialed. I think that is what really keeps the industry moving forward. And then, even trying to continue education. This winery has this really fun program where their hospitality and sales and restaurant staff are all making wine from block to bottle, and it's been this crazy fun experiment for them to all get out into the field and manage this block and see all of the challenges that come across. Last year when we had that really, really hot month and people were just right in harvest. They had to get it done. I think to that staff it was such an eye opener, realizing that this can really happen in the blink of an eye where you just have to get out there and get the work done right away. They made their first bottle and they said it actually was pretty good, so they were happy about that too. I think they we're a bit worried about the quality, originally. So, the creativity is really nice. What is one book you would recommend sustainability professionals read? I love to read, but really for my sustainability education, I'm a total podcast junkie if you couldn't have guessed since we have one as well. So, I love listening to podcasts. How I Built This, The Get it Done Guy, Freakonomics and Hidden Brain has come out with some really interesting podcasts recently. I think this is such a great way to consume information nowadays. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? I listened to a little while ago and it was one of those eye opening experiences that seems like it should make sense, but it was the consistent file naming. So, if you have regular paper hanging files and you have files on your computer network and you have files in your inbox system, naming those all the same. I mean just that simple little tweak can make life really easy to search and be organized and try to find your materials. So that was kind of my more recent tip that I really liked. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work that you're leading at SIP? Well, the podcast is vineyardteam.org/podcast. That's for Sustainable Wine Growing. The vineyard team itself, vineyardteam.org, is where you can find information about our nonprofits. And to learn more about SIP certified. That's at sipcertified.org. Get-It-Done Guy's Quick and Dirty Tips to Work Less and Do More
Relationships need maintenance, but sometimes it’s hard to say what we need to repair a friendship - especially when mixing business and friendships. Get-it-Done Guy reveals a magic phrase, and useful technique, that will help. Read the full transcript here: http://bit.ly/2a3g52R
Last month, I was driving to play tennis with some friends, and, while driving, I played a 55 minute audio episode entitled "Living an Extraordinary Life". I'm not a voracious "self-improvement" consumer, and this type of thing doesn't happen very often when I listen to podcasts, audiobooks or lectures, but I actually found myself multiple times stopping to pump my fist, verbally shout in agreement and furiously take notes. The program was recorded by my friend Stever Robbins, also known in the podcasting world as the "Get-It-Done Guy". Stever combines business savvy, "life hacking," and personal development to help people make their lives extraordinary. He is CEO of Ideas Unleashed, a company that helps thought leaders build businesses around their areas of expertise. He is a serial entrepreneur, executive coach, and executive curriculum designer. He co-founded the early internet success story FTP Software, served as COO of Building Blocks Interactive, CEO of JobTacToe.com, and has been an initial team member of ten start-ups, including four IPOs and three acquisitions. His experience developing organizational leaders began as co-designer of Harvard Business School’s “Leadership and Learning” curriculum redesign, and has gone on to include being an advisor and mentor to senior managers in several high-growth companies. Stever is also the co-writer and lyricist of the musical Work Less and Do More: The (Zombie) Musical. Yes, a zombie musical. And that is where we start with today's podcast. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why Stever moved away from home when he was 15 years old... -What Stever means when he says "the journey is the reward"... -The crazy dream that Stever had that led him on a three year experiment to quit his job and start a podcast... -Why I dislike watching tennis and reading fiction, and how this relates to you deciding what an extraordinary life could be for you... -Why values like "hard work", "setting goals", "planning" are all myths... -How dangerous the concept of delayed gratification can be... -And much more! Resources from this episode: -Book - - -Text the word EXTRAORDINARY to 33444 and then follow the instructions to send in your email address and you'll get a link to the Stever's slides and audio materials in your email. -Go to to get a special version of his talk given to Harvard Business School, which has a section on goal-setting that the regular version of his talk doesn't have. COMMENTS? Call 888-563-3228 I started this last year and I want this to be an annual event. I ask my audience, "If you could only listen to one podcast what would it be, where is it, and WHY do you listen to it. Thanks to everyone who sent in their answers. I want to thank Ray Ortega for alerting me to a post from Seth Godin that sates, “There’s no such thing as a niche that’s too small if the people care enough. If you think you need a bigger market, you’re actually saying that the market you already have doesn’t need you/depend on you/talk about you enough. You might not need a bigger niche. You might only need to produce more value for those you already serve.” With people choosing the following podcasts over all others, one can assume they are delivering tons of value. My Favorite Podcast Is Nick Seuberling from "Inside the Jungle" who love the 606 Podcast. Its information he can't get in the US. Ben From Modern Self Protection loves the Survival Podcast podcast because its energy, and inspiring. Bill from the Media Fiasco I would definitely pick the Mike O’Meara Show, it always puts a smile on his face. Cain from the Adventure Frequency podcast Adam Carolla show consistent, funny. Daniel J. Stargate from the Legends of Shield podcast loves the Star Wars Minute for the behind the scenes, entertaining stories, Terry from Discovering America loves the Jefferson Hour Summary As I listened to theses clips, I listened and made notes. When I put it all together, here is how it broke down. These are the qualities that people mentioned most. These numbers indicate (according to the 50ish people who replied) how important the following topics are. If you combined funny and entertaining, that would be 47% (for me if I'm laughing I'm entertained). That would mean 49% Value (things I can use, easy to understand)47% Entertaining/Funny 32% Personality (objective, chemistry, authentic, objective)32% "Deep Dive" (in depth information)15% Behind the Scenes (info you can’t get anywhere else)11% Inspiring (encouraging, kept me positive)11% Stories (people love stories) 9% Voice ("I love their voice"). I have said (since 2005) your podcast is not about you, it’s about the audience. If you are a radio station, your call letters are WIFT (what’s in it for them). Find out what they want and deliver it in an entertaining and encouraging fashion, and you will connect with your audience. A HUGE thank you to all my listeners, but a special thank you to everyone who called in with their responses
Because of my Podcast... I got to Meet a Mentor and Be Seen as an Expert Ben from Modern Self Defense where he was asked to teach a class, meet a mentor, and then he had 20 peopel fly in to meet HIM. This great event gets better, they have already asked him back to do another class. Ben is doing his podcast as he wants people to be safe. Fin him at modernselfprotection.com and in iTunes. How to Create a Protected / Premium RSS Podcast Feed 6:37 I've had a few people ask me this question so thanks to Nick at spnt.tv, Jason from matttalkonline.com and Randy from Leaning Towards Wisdom (itunes) I use Digital Access Pass to accomplish this through some short codes. Then anyone who is subscribed can access their special version of the RSS feed (and other can't). If they cancel their account their RSS goes dead. I ave a video on my Patreon page that shows how this works (sign up for $1 and get access to bonus videos). Here are some tips and insight into having premium content. 1. If you are creating premium content for your launch, remember you don't have an audience yet and you may be doing "double the work" for an audience that doesn't exist. 2. When you get into ecommerce, you enter the world of paypal. Some people love paypal, and others refuse to us it. 3. You will need to be able to support your members. Its not a set it up and watch the money come in. They will occasionally need some help. 4. If you can keep the free items completely separate than the premium your life will be easy. I'm in the process of moving the premium content from the School of Podcasting to a completely different website. This makes keeping things "straight" a WHOLE lot easier. If you mix the premium and free content together, it can be quite the headache keeping everything separate (the easiest way to to just keep them separate). 5. If you are trying to make it so that there is NO WAY To steal your content, then you will have a long day. If your product is digital, people can steal it. That's a fact and in the end you have to end up trusting your customers. Don't get hung up on that. People will pay for items in money or time. There are those people who have more time than money and can go to great lengths to get your content (and there are some customers who will share it with others - welcome to 2014). Post Rewind [17:45] I appeared on the Podcaster's Roundtable where we talked about platforms for podcasting. Listen/Watch it here. Izzabela and Mike Russel produce the Branding Cow podcast where you can have Izzabela go over your website from top to bottom. In one episode the podcaster was using the Website host to host their media and Izzabela mentions how it took almost 10 minutes to download the episode. You can find the Branding Cow podcast at www.brandingcow.com Mike and Izzabela run Music Radio Creative and recommend using Spreaker as your media host. Music Radio Creative are responsible for the "Podcast Rewind" voice over as well as the "Ladies" who sing "The School of Podcasting with Dave Jackson." Speaking of using your Web Hoist as a Media host I interview Ralph from thesdrshow.com on episode 419 where he talks about the horror of having to move to a "real" media host after launching his podcast (his web host even told him it would be fine - then it wasn't). You can hear that episode HERE (if you want a free month of hosting at Libsyn.com or blubrry.com use the coupon sopfree ). Spotlight Podcast: Adopting and Fostering in Faith [22:56] Today we spotlight a new podcast "Adopting and Fostering in Faith from a new member of the School of Podcasting Robert Gelinas. This podcast is all about inspiration, information and resources for Christians who desire to care for orphans in their own backyard (and beyond). I love it as Robert is an expert (he has five adopted children) and he is using the podcast to help others with questions about fostering and adopting children. Check out his website at http://fosteringandadoptinginfaith.com/ and find his podcast in itunes Last 5 in 5 from Ben Branam [29:46] Ben Branam from Modern Self Protection (No One SHould Live in Fear) shares the last five podcasts you listened to: 1. Daily Audio Bible 2. Get it Done Guy 3. The Survival Podcast 4. Handgun World 5. Black Man With a Gun HipCast Podcast Media Hosting Review [34:15] I've am getting a bit tired of reviewing media hosts as there are new ones every day (hour?) I was asked to look at Hipcast.com. My criteria includes: 1. Don't mess with my file (they do) - although you are allowed to rename your file once you upload it. They transcode your file as well. 2. Give me a way to redirect my feed (they don't). 3. Dont limit my bandwidth (they pass) 4. Give me stats (their stats get a D+ - very, very basic) 5. Give me unlimited storage (they pass) They list features on their website that aren't really features ("We back up you files" - really? I hope so). Their online recording tools didn't work with my machine (they didn't recognize my microphone). The recording from your phone produced a quality that I feel is poor at best. You can read my review of other media hosts here. I recommend Libsyn.com and Blubrry.om (who meet all my criteria) get a free month at either site using the coupon sopfree As Tim is doing a video podcast and he wants to put out an hour long video, I ask "Does it really need to be video. There are people who do videos for YouTube and then put the audio out as a podcast. Cali Lewis use to do this (and might still be doing it) for geekbeat.tv What some people will do is create a smaller version to be downloaded 640 x 360 (16:9) Or 640 x 480 (4:3) Then upload the HD version to Youtube and put the Youtube version on your website and put the smaller version into your feed and let people watch YouTube on your website. This reduces how much space you need for hosting. If your show is NOT visual (talking head) I would recommend this. Mentioned on this Show Skywalking Through Neverland Ready to Start a Podcast? Get-It-Done Guy's Quick and Dirty Tips to Work Less and Do More
Get-it-Done Guy's take on bringing bad news, while reducing your chances of being blamed as the messenger.
Welcome to 1 Minute Tips! Today I want to talk about investment. Not monetary investment. A much more important kind of investment, time! If you had to rate how well are you investing your time on a scale from 1 to 10. 1 meaning you’re not managing your time, and 10 meaning you are Mr. Get it Done Guy! Just think about it and give yourself an honest rating. Some of you will give yourself a higher rating for feeling busy all the time. Being always busy does not mean getting stuff done. It also doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re using your time wisely. Time is our biggest asset. Every human being on this planet knows it, yet most of us simply don’t care. Thankfully, if you’re listening or reading this. It means you’re looking for ways to improve yourself, and that already puts you in front of millions of people who are just clueless. There are so many ways to stop wasting time: You could cut the hours in front of the TV, cut the time on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Wake up an hour earlier than usual. The list could go on, but I trust you already know what you can do to stop wasting your own time. Remember to use the newly found hours as an investment in yourself. Time really is all you have! Remember that. I’m Rod Gomes and I’ll come back with another 1 minute tip soon. Take care, stay active, stay positive!
