Some might suggest a performance CUV is akin to the world's tallest midget, but this week co-host Chris Teague took the wheel of the hot-to-trot AMG GLC 43 in the teeth of yet another frigid Maine winter, and he's ready to report on his finding in this edition on of America on the Road. Plus, we talk about the NHTSA's investigation into Full Self Driving, and how Rivian is re-skinning its R1s for spooky season.Show Notes with links:General Motors' latest electric vehicles, combined with Tesla's Cybertruck, significantly contributed to an 18% increase in U.S. EV registrations in August year over year.U.S. EV registrations hit 111,952, accounting for 8.6% of the light-vehicle market, up from 7.5% the previous year.GM's new Equinox EV and Blazer EV made the top 10 EV models,helping Chevrolet place as the #3 EV brand in August, up from #7 in May. Testing 2 New Electric SUVs: 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV, 2024 Genesis Electrified GV70

The all-new 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV and the recently renewed 2024 Genesis Electrified GV70 represent two different approaches to solving the electric vehicle puzzle. The Equinox EV is built on the General Motors Ultium dedicated battery-electric vehicle platform, while the Electrified GV70 leverages the conventionally powered GV70 body, chassis, and interior. Each approach has its pluses and minuses, and executives in those two companies to tell you. What our two test vehicles suggest is that the two paths lead to the same destination. Though they are similar in size, the Equinox EV and Electrified GV70 are not head-to-head competitors. As one of the battery-electric touchstones of GM's lowest-priced brand, the Equinox EV has been touted as a vehicle that will bring affordable electric vehicles to the masses. Co-Host Chris Teague, who road-tested the Equinox EV, and Host Jack Nerad will discuss how well the new Chevy accomplishes that task. The Genesis GV70 has a different mission — to bring electric propulsion to the increasingly popular and increasingly competitive small luxury crossover class. Those woods are currently filling up with EVs, many of them struggling to find willing buyers. Do the GV70's handsome looks and 3.8-second 0-60 acceleration give it the push it needs to break through in the marketplace. Nerad, who road-tested the GV70, and Teague will bat that issue around in this episode. While we are on the subject of luxury vehicles, our special guest this week is Lexus's Cynthia Tenhouse, who serves as vice president of the Lexus Guest Experience. Toyota's luxury marque has proceeded very slowly in introducing battery-electric vehicles to its lineup even as virtually all of its luxury-brand competitors have charged ahead. We'll discuss the brand's wait-and-see strategy and many other topics with her in a wide-ranging discussion about the current state of the luxury vehicle market. You'll want to hear what she has to say. In the news, two prominent American electric carmakers are in the midst of a dust-up in court. We'll tell you who Tesla's Elon Musk is suing and what's likely to happen next. Beyond that court battle, Musk also angling to become a strong competitor to Waymo in the robotaxi wars that are set to develop in several cities around the country in the coming months. And Waymo is taking a special jab at Tesla as just one skirmish in what promises to be an epic battle. A new survey reveals that enthusiasm for driving and collector cars isn't dying, as some would have you believe. Instead, the Hagerty-sponsored survey reveals that Americans' love for automobiles remains strong across several generations. There is also tragedy in Chicago, as an iconic vehicle is involved in a major crash. We'll have the details on that and so much more in this episode of America on the Road. Tom shared his thoughts on the show, including several vehicles on display, among them the Tesla Cyber Truck, the Cadillac Escalade IQ, and the GMC Hummer. Jill and Tom also discussed recently announced pricing for a pair of coming EVs, the Chevrolet Equinox EV, and the Fiat 500E. The hosts then turned their attention to the all-electric Hyundai Ioniq 5 small crossover Tom recently reviewed. We told you it was a great day. Show Notes with links:In a record breaking transaction, Florida-based Al Hendrickson Toyota, the second-busiest dealership in the US, has been sold to Morgan Automotive Group in what has become the most expensive dealership purchase in history. The landmark deal, facilitated by Haig Partners, underscores a vibrant dealership buy-sell market, undeterred by the ongoing uncertainties brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.Al Hendrickson, Jr. stated in a press release, “I always knew I wanted to be in business with my Dad, and I am so incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend the last 30+ years working with and learning from him. Our approach to business has always been that we are not in the car business, rather, we are in the people business. Welcome to Wednesday as we talk about a Tesla deal with the Oneida Indian Nation allowing it to sell cars in Upstate NY. We also talk about GM's outlook on EV profits through 2030, as well as a unique approach to service department efficiency. Tesla's landmark partnership with the Oneida Indian Nation will see the establishment of its first direct sales outlet in Upstate New York. The showroom, set to open in 2025, will boost access to electric vehicles and charging infrastructure in the region, augmenting the push towards green energy solutions.The agreement with the Oneida Indian Nation provides a legal framework for Tesla's expansion into Upstate New York, overcoming the state law that mandates vehicle manufacturers to sell through dealerships.The 25,000-square-foot showroom will be situated in Madison County on Oneida Indian Nation-owned land, significantly enhancing Tesla's reach beyond the New York City area.Tesla will begin delivering pre ordered vehicles from the site right from the casino while the showroom is under constructionGM CEO Mary Barra has stated that she doesn't foresee profitable electric cars in the $30,000 to $40,000 range until the end of the decade or perhaps even later.Barra acknowledged that Tesla currently leads in EV technology, profitability, and scale, but she believes that this lead is not permanent and GM can catch up.She mentioned that EV battery costs are still too high to build profitable mass-market vehicles that sell for $30,000 to $40,000. However, she predicted that EV and combustion vehicle costs will equalize sometime in the latter part of this decade.The article points out that GM is currently selling the Chevy Bolt EV starting at $26,500 and has promised a starting price of around $30,000 for the Equinox EV. The profitability of these models is unclear.Service departments are finding increased efficiency and revenue through an unique approach: book clubs. Sherwood Ford in Alberta and Shaheen Chevrolet in Michigan both have implemented reading programs with much success.At Shaheen, team leaders read Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink one chapter at a time, each writing a synopsis and discussing how they can apply the principles.After implementing some of the ideas, one service advisor's average repair order for customer-pay work, which jumped 23 percent in one quarter to $166.38.For the team at Sherwood, reading isn't mandatory, but employees are paid to read. Around 40% of the employees can get books from an office “library.”They are paid $5-$10 for a short book, and longer books bring more. We also discuss a new report about global EV adoption, as well as check in on our old friend…inflation. After the better part of a decade, GM is saying goodbye to the Bolt as the last units roll off the Orion assembly line later this year. The move marks the end of the Bolt as the most affordable EV in the US market, making way for the upcoming Equinox EV, according to CEO Mary Barra.The Bolt experienced record sales in its final year, with GM expecting to produce over 70,000 Bolt EV and EUV models this year.GM plans to replace the Bolt with a new slightly larger Equinox and Blazer SS, based on GM's Ultium platform later this yearGM is tripling the size of the staff at the factory following a planned $4B overhaul so that it can produce electric versions of  the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra. I'm Brian Stockton. I'm James Whittingham. This week, it's not just natural gas that comes from Russia. So that's the specialized uranium used in small modular nuclear reactors. Whoopsy. The European Union has officially banned new combustion and cars in 2035. Now. If only they could ban the Eurovision song contest. A large multinational bank is getting scolded for greenwashing. Brian I'm old enough to remember what a multinational bank greenwashed. It meant laundering money for criminals. According to the IEA, carbon emissions will peak in 2025. They also said our podcast peaked in 2020, which I thought was kind of me. Why do they keep studying us? Anyway? All that and more on this edition of the Clean Energy Show. Brian we have is Twitter owner Elon Musk damaging Tesla's brand? Answer is yes. Will British PM Sunak attend Cop 27? And will King Charles be jealous? Answer is also yes. Well, I'm spoiling everything. SMRs have a geopolitical problem thanks to Russia invading Ukraine, poland bosched its nuclear ambitions and is now letting foreigners run the show. And how Africa can benefit even more than the rest of the world by installing renewables. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. All kinds of stuff we're talking about this week. So much stuff to do. So one thing I wanted to catch up on, which I just sort of mentioned off the cuff last week, we somehow started talking about a transatlantic cruise. Something I've always wanted to do is take a cruise across the Atlantic rather than airplane because it would be sort of old fashioned and fun and less stressful than plane travel. I've always wanted to do it, but I've done some googling and it turns out, in terms of a carbon footprint, taking a ship across the Atlantic is worse than flying. But, yeah, I just wanted to follow up because I didn't sort of cite any sources last week because I just kind of mentioned it off the cuff. But if anyone wants to Google that, there's sort of a few articles here, but there's one from the Guardian that's way back from 2006, and it quotes Climate Care, which is a carbon offsetting company, and they calculated it at 00:40 3 passenger mile on a cruise ship and only .25 for a long haul flight. So point 43 versus point 25 for airplane travel. So, yeah, it does appear that taking a ship, one of those big cruise ships anyway, like, maybe you could still away on, like, a cargo ship that's going anyway. I mean, that'd probably be well, they put swimming pools on those ships, multiple swimming pools, ads on my social media. They've got a go kart track on the top of one of these cruise ships. Really? Wow. Jeez. I'd like that. Hopefully there's a barrier so you don't fly off into the ocean. Yeah, cruise ship. It's like you're moving basically a small city across the ocean. So I guess we shouldn't be surprised that it's worse in terms of carbon emissions. And then also possible, like, they sometimes do things like burn their waste because they've got so much waste on a ship and things like that are not good. We should have done something on a sustainable Halloween because it was Halloween last night. And what's your favorite Halloween candy? You're not known for your sweet tooth, I'll say that. Yeah. What did you steal from the kids, Brian? Come on, be honest. Well, we had some, like, Swedish Berries that were pretty good. Those are good, aren't they? They do really ring the bell in the old brain, don't they? They're nice. There are a lot of things. My least favorite is smarties. I have a box right here. Oh, I like smarties. You're the guy who likes smarties. Smarties. I looked this up yesterday, is at the bottom of the preferred candy lists all over the Internet. At the bottom. Wow. I like smarties. You like smarties. And I'm going to eat them right now out of not spite, but because I have to. And also, I will point out, you know, the candy that we call rockets, a little sugar candy, in America, those are known as smarties. What? Yeah. They don't have smarties like we have smarties. Really? Yes. Smarties here in Canada are kind of vaguely like an eminent M. It's a chocolate covered candy covered chocolate in different colors, but they're not very good, the M and Ms. I will tell you, this is a knowledge that I have deep knowledge of candy have ground up peanuts in the shell, which is why you cannot, if you have a peanut allergy, eat M and M's chocolates. These do not. And I really noticed the flavor difference. Like, they have a flavor to their shell in M and Ms. But do you see M amp M very much? No. We had a lot of help. Do you have trick or feeders? Did you do that? Yeah, just maybe a couple of dozen. Well, that's pretty good. My son was texting me all night from his great uncle's house in town where he goes to university. And his uncle, who's 83, and his twin lives in Regina, is very close to us, his sister, and he was giving out he didn't give out anything last year, so when my son was there so my son was kind of wondering what Uncle Gary gives out christmas oranges. He gives out oranges. Interesting. And my son was very upset by this, but then it got worse because then Uncle Gary made him hand out the oranges and accept the wrath from the kids. How embarrassing. Apparently, there was a meme to give out potatoes, so people were giving up potatoes this year. We did that as a joke. We had some potatoes lying around and we said we should give those out. The thing is, Brian, people are paranoid, even when we were kids about Halloween, catty rather, and those oranges are going to the landfill. Yeah, probably. Maybe one in 20 will be eaten. I bet you most of them will be thrown out, especially when they're handed to a long haired teenager. There are already reports of marijuana gummies getting into the Halloween supply in Winnipeg. I'm sure it's possible, although they're kind of expensive. That's kind of an expensive maybe you get high, you make mistakes, Brian. I don't know. The other thing I want to mention is I've got another Tesla appointment in Saskatoon on Friday. I'm starting to have troubles with the heat again. Something like that kind of happened last winter where it seemed like it was not blowing enough heat, but it never put up an error warning or anything, so I was never able to kind of get it fixed. But now there's a little error warning, so I got to make the drive up to Saskatoon on Friday to see what's up with that. Did you Google the error warning? Nope. No, I didn't. It just said, Climate keeper not available due to system fault. So there's some kind of system fault and they're going to see me on Friday. Well, we've had above normal weather, but it's going to cool down and good luck. It's going to be very cold very soon. It works for a little while, and then you're driving around and then suddenly it's blowing cold air. That's going to be an unpleasant 5 hours of driving then potentially, yeah, the temperatures got to dropping a bit by Friday, so we'll see. It kind of comes and goes. So hopefully I'll just warm, I should say. So let's see what's the Friday forecast here. Checking the weather here and to see if Brian is going to be available for next show. So this is a scheduling issue here that we're looking at. Will Brian be dead Friday? Five plus five plus five. Celsius and sunny. So the sun really makes a difference. Is the middle of the day you're going or I haven't decided if I'm going to go the day before or not. Oh, because you're going to make a trip out of it. Hit the restaurants, the museums, everything in your retirement is a tourist activity. It's just totally even with your snowden, it's like, oh, this is great. I got nowhere to be. It must be good. The big discussion topic this week is Elon Musk, because he is the head of Twitter, and he was the head is the head of Tesla. Now, Tesla is an important company in the energy transition, and we've been following every eye glitch of Musk for 20 years, and now he's gone off the rails. I think the discourse in America is about to get way worse, thanks to new Twitter CEO Elon Musk. Musk took over the Twitter on Friday, and immediately there was an explosion of hate speech, including use of the N word on the platform, which jumped 500%, leading Twitter to change the landing page from what's happening to Me. Because yesterday Musk replied to a tweet from Hillary Clinton about the attack on Paul Pelosi that condemned the violence and conspiracy theories with a link to a homophobic conspiracy theory blaming the victim of the violence. That's not just awful, that is beyond the pale. And so is Elon Musk bathing picture of Elon on the beach. But anyway, very pissed. My point is, as you can hear from the audience, he's becoming not a happy, popular guy anymore. Used to be no one knew who he was, right? I bet when you bought your first Tesla stock, 99 out of 100 people wouldn't know who he was, practically. Or maybe not that extreme, but a lot of people didn't know who he was, and now he's a villain. It's almost like, Let Trump on Twitter so that Musk is not the biggest villain. So my question to you is, as a loyal fan who has not broken down yet and has total faith in Elon, when's your faith going to crumble? What's it going to take? Is he going to have to invade Poland? What's going to happen? Say, I have faith in Elon. I have faith in Tesla. Like, the mission of the company is solidly on track. They're doing great. I don't know. It's not like this is going to derail what Tesla is doing. What happens if he starts doing crazy things? I know he mentioned in the last conference call for shareholders that he said something about, in case I go crazy. This is like the backup. Like, they can take over and do things. So it's almost like he was seeing it coming, but he's getting kind of Kanye. I'm just waiting for antisemitic tweets and then anticlimate tweets. I've predicted this for a while. I can see it coming. And it was like five years ago, I saw an interview with him where he was interviewing okay. An attractive woman was interviewing him for a network, and he started flirting with her. And I thought, this is kind of unhinged, especially since he just ended one marriage. He was about to get his next. He said, you do know anyone I could date in the middle of an interview for a business channel? And it was just so bizarre that I started to lose faith in him and started to question. It just makes me nervous. It makes me nervous. And now he's trying to make people with blue ticks on their Twitter account pay $20 a month to have your verified account. Well, as we said many times, clean energy is going to win because it's better and it's cheaper. So whether he charges people on Twitter, I don't really see how that affects Climate Change. I see it as he's making stupid decisions. And I'm worried that those stupid decisions could make it into Tesla. And I asked myself, like I've said this before, what does it mean for Tesla to have a person, like, go off the rails? Who's running the company. Are they stable enough now? Does it matter anymore? Is his ingenuity, the things that he's developed, like solving problems. Like it costs too much. So we'll make one giant piece out of one casting machine. We'll build the machine that makes the machine. If that goes away, is Tesla still I mean, if he's wrapped up in cellophane somewhere, talking to himself, can the clean revolution go ahead? That's my question to you. And you say it's probably okay, but I worry about it. Yeah, because clean energy is better and cheaper. So, you know, all this just seems like a distraction. And, you know, here's another thing, Brian, and this is going to be a tough one for you. I have less of a desire to own a tesla than I did two weeks ago. And I think that's true for a lot of people. Yeah. And I think that could continue and it could get worse, because he's gathering up all this storm of disdain for him that people could be ashamed to drive a Tesla one day instead of proud of it. And that I worry about because of the company's bottom line is not good if it slows down. The fact is, that's not going to be an issue for a long time because there's just so much demand, which we talk about every week on our show. Now I'm blocking anyone who serves me an ad on Twitter because GM said that they were going to stop temporarily serving ads. That didn't last long because I started getting GM ads again. Really? Yeah. So maybe it's a Canada US. Thing. Maybe they're still doing it in Canada. Well, it's true. I didn't get any ads at all when he took over Twitter for about two days, and then GM came back on, so I blocked them. And that's the one thing I might actually buy, is a GM car. Right. So they know that. And it's just kind of weird, because if everybody who has a blue check mark pay the $20 a month, it would be like $75 million, which is a drop in the bucket compared to the 5 billion in advertising. Right. So it doesn't matter. So if you drive people like Stephen King off there was a funny joke, one of the late night shows that I think maybe it was Saturday Night Live. The joke was. Why is everyone so upset that Elon Musk could ruin Twitter? I honestly don't understand why people are so worried that Elon is going to ruin Twitter. As if it's this beloved American institution. It's not like he bought Disney World. It's like he bought the rest of Orlando. It's already bad. It's a cesspool. Who cares if you think it all it is now is slightly better than Facebook. Like, that's all you can say about it? Well, I felt less guilty about it since I don't know. I mean, I will give him the benefit of the doubt for a while and maybe he can clean it up. But so far so far his steps are not indicating that that will happen. But if he could get rid of Bots, that would be a good thing. Bots drive the discourse, apparently. Some people think. Yeah, I don't know, I just think maybe you're getting sucked into the Clickbait news cycle. Like, everything to do with this is fantastic. Clickbait. So whether it's positive or negative, this stuff just generates tons of publicity. I mean, he's only been running it for like, three days. Why do we all fired everybody? He's appointed himself king. He's like there's a skyscraper by himself in his underwear doing God knows what, and it's still better than Face. All you have to do is look at Mark Zuckerberg, who would win in a nude wrestley match? Zuckerberg musk. I think Zuckerberg worked because he's studying martial arts. But anyway, I'd like to see that. A tan off. They should do a tan off. They should. And see who burns the most. Get outside of your basement, people. I got mad. I saw an ad the other day, which apparently was I researched it. It's been around since June and I think that you've seen it before and I just didn't pay attention. And it's a Nissan ad from the company that makes my EV that I love. And it was the first EV mass produced, but they haven't made one until now. OK, this is important. Context. They started in 2010 making the Nissan Leaf the first mass produced all electric vehicle. And just now you can order not yet a Nissan area, which is a small SUV. Right. So then the guy who came up with that program, initially he's in jail and sought to be in jail. I can't remember Carlos, so we'll see about that. Yeah, Carlos going, I think he escaped. I think he's fine. So this is an ad, and I'm going to play right now with Brie Larson doing an ad that I don't care for. In the future, we'll travel to incredible places with the help of magical technology. But what about today? I want my magical future now I have places to go. I can't wait for what? Tomorrow we'll bring. But in the meantime, let's enjoy the ride, because you don't have any EVs to sell. You more on Japanese company who are guest EVs. So I can't see the pictures for that ad, but presumably it's an ad for combustion cars. You don't need to see it. You can hear the car going, Vroom. And in the beginning there's flying cars, but that's fantasy electric future, that's going to be wonderful. I can't wait for it. But until then, well, the thing is, you and I and our listeners know that then is now. Go and buy an electric car. You can find one if you try hard enough. And God knows people do try hard. We retreated something from dawn the other day that a writer for, I believe, the Toronto Star or a photographer went to great lengths. He went to James like lengths to get an electric car. He went up to campus gasing a long way and there wasn't even a bus service. He had to catch a ride to get to a small town to buy Chevrolet Bolt EV because they had one in stock. So it was one of those crazy things, still a short supply. If you only kind of want an EV, you're probably not going to get one because it's too much work. The Financial Times says that Rishi Sunak has opened the door to a possible uturn over his decision not to attend next or this month's UN Cop 27 climate conference in Egypt. This is growing criticism from Tory MPs about him not going. He said he was pressing business and can't go. And we have a story about fossil fuels paying him money as well later in the show. So I just thought he pointed that out. I also thought I'd throw out that Prince King Charles wanted to go and the government wouldn't let him. It's like, wasn't a king get to do whatever he wants? Yes. Isn't that the whole point of being a king? He says no, your first thing should be a big thing, like a trip to Canada. Screw this. Why? You live in Canada. We don't want you here. Go to the conference, make an impact. He is going to host something, though. I think we'll cover that later in the show, too. And Brian, I wanted to talk about a big feature that I read and listened to in the New York Times from David Wallace Wells. It was a feature in the New York Times Magazine on the weekend. I don't know if you caught it or not, but it was about our climate future and how our climate future is coming into view. We are starting to know what things will look like based on global warming and based on what we have to fight global warming. So it says, just ahead of top 27, the climate future looks both better and worse than it did a few years ago. Related action has made worst case scenarios much less likely, but delay has made best case outcomes impossible too. So where are we headed? And this is a big, big article. The audiobook highs it. They hired an audiobook type reader to read it. Wow. Among energy nerds, the story is well known, but almost no one outside the insular world appreciates just how drastic and rapid the cost declines of renewable technologies have been. That's us. That's us and our listeners. Yeah, we're the insular world. We know what's going on, don't we? We should hire that guy to read our podcast. That was great. Since 2010, the cost of solar power and lithium battery technology has fallen by more than 85%, the cost of wind power by more than 55%. The International Energy Agency recently predicted that solar power would become the cheapest source of electricity in history. And a report by Carbon Tracker found that the global population lives in places where new renewable power would be cheaper than new dirty power. The price of gas was under $3 per gallon in 2010, which means these decreases are the equivalent of seeing gas station signs today advertising prices of under fifty cents a gallon. The markets have taken notice. This year investment in green energy surpassed that in fossil fuels, despite the scramble for gas and the return to coal prompted by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. After a decade of declines, supply chain issues have nudged up the cost of renewable manufacturing. But overall, the trends are clear enough that you can read them without glasses. Globally, there are enough solar panel factories being built to produce the necessary energy to limit warming to below two degrees. And in the United States, planned solar farms now exceed today's total worldwide operating capacity. Librike has taken to speculating about a renewable singularity beyond which the future of energy is utterly transformed. So there you have a big long clip from there, and I recommend reading or listening to it on The New York Times. And you know what I can do? I have a subscription. So you know I'm cheap, my listeners know I'm cheap. But I do have a subscription to The New York Times, and I tried to cancel it because I was saving up my money for other things and they said, well how about fifty cents a month? And I said okay. So yeah, I got it down to month. Not bad for a while. A few years ago I subscribed to the physical copy of the Sunday New York Times. You can actually get that delivered in our city in the middle of nowhere in Canada. It wouldn't come until like Tuesday or Wednesday. And I think you still can get the physical Sunday New York Times delivered to your house. Well, that's pretty cool. It must have been pretty big as well. I had a magic. Oh yeah, huge and thick. It was super fun. It's kind of expensive, so I only did it for a few months, but it was super fun. Our newspaper here used to be big and then it got smaller and smaller. Now it's like a leaflet that's just kind of a story for local news everywhere these days in the internet era. Anyway, since I have a subscription, they let me put out ten gift links per month. So I will put a gift link in our show notes, which as many people as possible or would like, can use it all tweeted out as well. And if you don't go to the Times on a regular basis, I think we give you five articles a month, so won't even matter. But anyway, I'll do that. So let's get on with the show. Okay, so the European Union has now officially banned combustion vehicles from the year 2035 onwards. Wait, I have to get the oil band thing going. Oil band? We don't get to use that every day. Brian we should get it. We always have that. We got to use the oil. Okay, so, yeah, 2035 onward, no more new combustion vehicles can be sold in the EU, which is great. There's another oil band, but it makes me think of so I knew we were going to talk about Tony Siba later on in the show. Prognosticator tony Siba, who has been predicting the end of fossil fuels for quite some time now, and he's got a couple of new videos out on his YouTube page, if you want to look for them. Tony Seba but one of the stats that struck me was because of what's going to happen with transportation as a service, which is like robotaxis or even just electric cars, one of his charts on the new video, and he's had similar charts to this before, but he thinks by 2030, it's 90 or 95% of miles driven, will be electric just by 2030. So, as I've often wondered, it's like, is 2035 even going to do anything? I mean, it may be essentially already banned by 2030 anyway, just because once electric cars exist, and especially if they're autonomous, you're just going to start driving more miles electric. Just like in our house, we have a gas car and an electric car, while we use the electric car way more often, like once that option is available to people, you know, the use of combustion cars to get around is going to absolutely plummet by 2030. There's an interesting stat that I saw in one of those videos that I hadn't seen before, and it was that with transportation as a service now, we should explain that maybe that's like Uber without a driver, and you might subscribe like you do to Spotify or to Netflix, you might pay $20 a month. You might pay $100 a month at first, you might pay an annual fee, but you'll get access to that car service whenever you need it to get to the subway station, to get to work, to whatever you want to do. And it should be roughly one 10th of the cost of owning a car. And he pointed out that it would be less than just the price of gas to travel that distance without the car, without the payment on the car or the charging of the car. All that is less than just the gas for the same car. So, yeah, it's quite a disruption. And I know that many listeners don't believe it, and it is hard to believe that it's coming, but it will come, and it's a question of when. And you can argue about that all day. But I have a story from China later. On that talks about what they are doing, and they're kind of following what Tesla is doing, but with more sensors. We'll get to that later. It's very interesting. And the idea is, I don't know what you pay for your car, but you pay, you have to pay. Well, I'm not going to get into your personal life, but a lot of people go, and they would have a car payment, okay? And they would pay four, five, six, $700 a month, depending on what kind of a car you buy. And then you put gas in it, and you buy insurance and you do maintenance and all that over the course of however you decide to own that, whether you lease it for three years or own it for ten, it is going to cost you X amount of money per month. And that disruption is it's going to be a lot cheaper to just say, okay, forget it. I'm in Canada. It's -1000 out the car is going to pull up in 30 seconds or two minutes after I punch it in on my app. And it's going to be warm. I don't have to warm it up. It takes me somewhere. I'm not going to get into an accident because it's going to drive perfectly and I'm going to do work. I'm going to surf the web and check out what Elon is doing on Twitter, because that's very important or whatever. That's the way the future is, and it's bound to happen by 2030. And I was reading today, people think that a lot of different companies will probably reach that threshold at the same time, and it would be a question of who can deploy it the quickest. And Tesla may or may not have an advantage. We'll see on how that works out. You know what we should do, Brian, next spring, a year after we did our automation test in your car? It's easy for me to say now because I'm committing to something six months from now, we should do it again, same trip, and see how it does then. Hopefully the construction is gone. It's funny because the car almost if we didn't intervene, the car would have gone into a construction site with an open pit. Well, somebody actually did that the other day in our city and went into a pit. Yeah, it was very unpleasant for them. They're okay, although not an autonomous not an autonomous car, but they might have been driving pretty stupidly autonomous from their mind, perhaps. Possibly. Texting SMR fuel is mostly coming from malaria. I saw this on our local newspaper, speaking of our local newspaper or pamphlet, and that is because three provinces in Canada have invested millions, committed millions of federal governments, committed a lot of millions stupidly. To small modular reactors, which don't exist except on paper for the most part. And the thing about these that this pointed out is there's a lot of different reactors, okay? But some of them, most of them require specialized uranium that is high in content. It says natural or uranium is about zero 7% uranium 235. And hellyu is a lot of these reactors are way up at 20%. So that's many times more. And only Russia has that. And guess what? Russia's at war with the world, essentially. Yeah. Well, what about us? We have uranium here in our province. Not that kind of stuff. No, it's no good. It's common blue collar uranium. It's not the good stuff. Right. But guess what? Our premier here in our jurisdiction said, hey, we want the reactor that uses our uranium. So that's a different kind of reactor. And the fact that there are all kinds of different kinds of reactors on paper using different fuels just prevents it from ever being close to cost competitive, which is what we argue on the show. And it's just so sanctions against Russia's cut off the supply. So that's delaying this. And the thing about SMRs is that they're going to take a long time, and the carbon in the atmosphere filling up like water in a glass. And we have to fight that drip as fast as possible and get it down as fast as possible. So, Canadian uranium mines, we do mine uranium here, but we've never built an enrichment capacity because can do reactors the reactors in Canada used to build in the run on fuel that doesn't need enriching. So that's why we don't have it. But Russia does. Anyway, I just want to point that out. It's one more check against SMRs overall that would delay and possibly make them less cost competitive. Well, and that leads us into the next story, which also involves Russia. And this is from the Guardian and the International Energy Agency has released new statistics that say that 2025 will be the peak year for carbon emissions. And basically what they say in the report is this is accelerated from what it was because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine that everybody has kind of accelerated in a good way. You want to point out that this has moved up. Yeah, that's right, because no one really wants Russia's dirty oil. Everyone's plans to accelerate the clean energy. It's all accelerated. And so 2025 is looking like the peak in terms of emissions. Every year when the climate conference comes, we get inundated with all these studies and reports and it all drops at once and we should hire more people next year. That's all I'm saying. It's just a lot of stuff to COVID anyway. The UK's Advertising Standards Authority has banned two HSBC advertisements, advertisements for misleading the public about its efforts to tackle climate change. This is a bank. What is HSBC stand for? Well, it was the Hong kong bank or something, but I don't know, I think they changed their name. Anyway, they're one of the major banks in the world. And during the climate conference, cop 26 in the UK last year, they were advertising things. I've got a picture of it here. It says, Climate change doesn't do borders and we're great. So they're misleading the public, is what they are accused of, about its efforts to tackle climate change, marking the first time this is the first time ever the regulator has taken action against a bank for green washing. And banks, as you know, Brian, are very important in this, but they can't be green washing. And basically, this was seen at a bus stop in London and Bristol and other places like that, and two ads presented as a force for climate good, while making no reference to the climate's ongoing commitment to underwriting fossil fuel projects. That's the issue. Yeah. Well, that's great. I mean, we got to hold people to account when they're just green washing. It sucks. It does. And banks, people are putting pressure on banks, shareholders and customers, and corporations are putting pressure on banks to stop this. And I hate to say it, but fossil fuels are just they're fighting a big fight against losing their power and they have to lose it, they have to go away as fast as possible. And it's just so much of this is going on that I'm glad people are fighting back against it. Yeah. And of course, in the midst of all this, we sometimes talk about hydrogen, which is, of course, one of the potential fuels of the future, especially green hydrogen. And we reported a few weeks ago on the first hydrogen trains that are now operating in Germany. Anyway, I've come across a new website I've started to read only recently. The website is called Hydrogen Insight and it's a news site to do with news about hydrogen, but I'm still kind of assessing it. I'm a little confused by this website because I know a lot of the stories seem to be negative about hydrogen, really, so I'm not quite sure what's going on there, if anyone knows what Hydrogen Insight is all about. And not to say that it's not like fake news or anything, like it's a hit piece kind of website or anything, but I just assumed that a website called Hydrogen Insight would be kind of promoting the hydrogen industry. But anyway, the German government has kind of released a report about the cost of this and basically decided that they wouldn't do any more hydrogen powered trains because it's not cost effective. So the different types of trains so they're saying €849,000,000 for a hydrogen version of a specific train, compared to only 506,000,000 for a battery hybrid, or only €588,000,000 for a conventional electric train. And a lot of trains in Europe run with overhead wires electrically, and it turns out that's the cheapest way, which is, again, one of the things we've always kind of wondered about hydrogen. It is a potential part of the solution, but is it cost effective? And it turns out, in terms of trains, it's not. And like other new technologies that we may or may not need, it's going to take a while to become cost effective if it does, if it ever has even a chance to. But right now what we have to do is replace bad hydrogen with green hydrogen and work on that for the next ten years and get green hydrogen to replace anywhere where we use regular hydrogen or fossil fuel generated hydrogen, such as cement plants and fertilizer production and stuff like that. Yeah. And presumably these costs will improve over time and the hydrogen will get cleaner over time. But if you can just build an electric train, maybe just do that. So Poland is looking elsewhere for nuclear plants. This is from the German news agency DW. After years of shelves plans to build a civil nuclear capacity in Poland from scratch, the energy crunch caused by the war in Ukraine and lower gas supplies from Russia and lack of intermediate immediate renewable substitutes have kicked the issue back up to the political agenda. So Poland is likely to choose the United States engineering firm Westinghouse Electric to build its first nuclear power plant and provide 49% equity financing for the project. Stateowned Korea hydro nuclear power may also be involved. So Korea in the United States in a separate and parallel private nuclear project. However, Brian Greenpeace has been speaking out against this and says the issue of costs piled on unrealistic expectations, on issues of financing, based on unrealistic expectations of market changes delivers, in the end, an unfinanceable project. So they don't think that this will be financed without government paying for it. That's kind of the issue of nuclear these days is private financing. Private investment is not there for it, and then nobody wants to do it. So it's incumbent upon governments to do it or you and I taxpayers. And that's not, in our view, a good thing. So Greenpeace goes on, but at a certain moment, it will hit a wall, and there is less than a 1% chance that nuclear power plants in Poland will be added to the grid before 2050. Well, I mean, I'm not sure where they get that precise figure of 1%. It's an opinion, but still. You know what? It bothers me, though, if it was private companies doing it, that's one thing. But it's always going to be governments. I mean, here in Canada, these SMRs that may or may not from the fossil fuel conservative governments that are driven by hanging on to fossil fuels with their buddies are going to waste all of our money and bankrupt us if we let them keep doing this. Anyway, aside for the tweet of the week. So Tony Seba, as you mentioned, is active. They've wakened him up and dusted him off. He is sort of a guru to us. He's that guy who has been doing it for ten years, twelve years even, and it's ridiculous. His targets are still lining up, his predictions are still there. And it's not hugely innovative stuff he's doing. It's a cost curve. If a new technology comes and you make enough of it, the cost of it goes down and the adoption of it goes up. Yeah. And I think the best statistic from all of his presentations, and he repeated this again in the ones that he just released on YouTube, is the transition from using the horse to using the car in North America in the early 20th century. And the bulk of it, from something like 10% penetration to 80% penetration, happened in only ten years. And that's in spite of the fact of there being basically no roads and no gas stations. And you know what? They asked people? What do you want? Do you want a car? They said, no, I want a faster horse. They didn't realize that a car was not only a faster horse. It wasn't a one to one comparison. It kept you dry and safe and warm, and it didn't poop on you and things like that. Well, I had an AMC Gramline that did that, but that's another story. So there's a thing in his presentation where he showed newspaper highlines headlines advocating for eating horse meat after the transition started because there was too many horses, which is exactly what happened. Yeah, there was all these horses that we no longer needed because everyone was driving cars and literally people ate. Oh, sounds stringy to me. I apologize for the horses up there. I know we have a few listing. So Victor wrote to Tony on Tony Seba on Twitter. He says, Will smaller economies in Far East or Africa benefit more with this phase of the transfer information to solar? And Tony says, absolutely. When we convert to solar power and green the grid in Africa, they're basically leapfrogging from nothing right, to solar. They don't have to build a bunch of power lines or a grid. They're just going to have localized solar wind and battery and a superpower system without having to build an outdated grid. And because they're in Africa and close to the equator, they're going to have the cheapest the more sun you have, the more lower the cost of the solar per unit of electricity. So they'll have the cheapest electricity in the world in Africa, and with that, you can get investment. You can get industry investment. Where do you want to go where the cheapest electricity is if you're using electricity for your company or corporation or factory or whatever. So just like many countries leaf frog to a cell phone infrastructure without having to build a landline telephony system. So, yeah, there's a lot of places in Africa that don't have landlines. They never did. And they have cell phones now and they didn't need them and it was good to just leave frogs. And he says also Sunnier countries will have much lower cost of energy and that does attract and improve the quality of life and solve many issues such as transportation, food and water. So all that and desalination and the treatment of water will help those countries, even if they're poor and don't have access to a lot of water. Hey everyone, we like to hear from you. So already we have a delay and I'm not happy about that. Yeah, it sounds like battery supply issues. From utility dive, texas solar and wind resources saved consumers nearly $28 billion over the last twelve years. That means that the electricity consumed by Texans was $28 billion cheaper over twelve years because of renewables being in the grid. And that is growing rapidly. Yeah, Texas has more renewables, I think, than most people realize. Clean technica Mercedes is going all in on electric in general. The average lifespan for an automotive model is seven years. A Mercedes EClass is due for an update next year. But Brian, it's going to be its last. Mercedes plans to put out only battery electric new vehicles on the road by 2030 and will introduce only new electric platforms. Of course, you and I know that's too late. You should cancel everything now. But it is a signal to the investment world and to the world. The Ram all electric pickup truck is going to debut at this year's Consumer Electronics Show. I guess that's everyone except for Toyota, Brian, that's all the pickup trucks now are going electric. And Toyota will be bankrupt by the time they make that announcement from BBC News. Switching to renewable energy could save trillions, an Oxford University study says. Our central conclusion is that we should go full speed ahead with the green transition because it's going to save us money. And there's lots of studies on that coming out now and, you know, it's only going to get cheaper, so we're going to save even more money as we go along with the cost. Prices are dropping rapidly. Audio is cutting production of its flagship AA luxury sedan. That's his main car. They're cutting production because everyone's buying the electric Audi Etron battery electric vehicle, so they're increasing production of that one electric. Gping Motors has announced its latest EV has received a permit for autonomous driving tests on public roads. According to Chinese automaker, the G Nine is the first unmodified massproduced commercial vehicle to qualify for such tests. So this is like Waymo doing tests in San Francisco and La. But they've got a million dollars worth of equipment rotating and radar and things on the roof, and you can see them from a mile away coming. Whereas the Japanese Motors G Nine is like a Tesla, an SUV for a small SUV. It's got all the sensors built in, and yet they've got permission to do these robotaxi testing in streets of China, which I'm told are very hard to drive in at times. And I saw a test kind of like an FSD autopilot version, did pretty well. There were arguments in the comments about whether it was better or equal to Tesla, but it was kind of doing the same thing. Daniel Breton, President and CEO of Electric Mobility Canada joins us to discuss whether the real concerns about a shift to EVs are being addressed. Are zero emission vehicles the answer to a stronger economy, cleaner air, a healthier environment and good jobs? The Government of Canada certainly thinks so. And they're not the only ones.   Rebecca Schwartz  00:50 EV enthusiast owners, experts and advocates have been mobilizing like never before. They're being driven on a renewed commitment and mandate by the Canadian government to make all light duty vehicle and passenger truck sales fully electric by 2035.   Dan Seguin  01:05 A look at the 2022 Federal Budget shows that considerable money has been earmarked to get more Canadians into the driver's seats of an electric vehicle. According to the government's projections, at least 20% of all new passenger vehicles sold in Canada will be zero emissions by 2026. To give some perspective, last year in 2021, the percentage of zero emission vehicles sold in Canada was 5.2%. That gives five years for the government to reach its targets-doable?   Rebecca Schwartz  01:48 Well, since there's a rising trend in the demand of electric vehicles, many companies have actually gone out of stock. Automobile makers are experiencing a shortage in their EVs, and thus putting customers on waiting lists because of this high demand. Some manufacturers aren't even taking new orders for the foreseeable future because they just can't keep up.   Dan Seguin  02:08 So here's today's big question. Despite the momentum, are the real needs, issues and concerns by EV enthusiasts, owners, experts and advocates being addressed and setting the stage for success?   Rebecca Schwartz  02:25 Our guest today is Daniel Breton, the President and CEO of Electric Mobility Canada, one of the oldest associations dedicated to the electrification of transportation in the world.   Dan Seguin  02:37 Electric Mobility Canada members include vehicle manufacturers, electricity suppliers, universities, tech companies, environmental NGOs, and many more.   Rebecca Schwartz  02:50 Daniel's background includes serving as the ex-Minister of the Environment, Sustainable Development, Wildlife and Parks. He was also the first elected official to oversee a government strategy for the electrification of transportation in Canada in 2012.   Dan Seguin  03:06 Daniel, thank you for joining us on the program today for what's a very busy week for you. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about Electric Mobility Canada, its mandate, and what drove you to the organization?   Daniel Breton  03:25 Well, EMC's mandate, EMC being one of the oldest organizations in the world dedicated to electric mobility. Its mandate is basically to accelerate electric mobility of all sorts. So we're not just talking cars, but we're talking buses, we're talking trucks, we're talking off road, marine. So we have a growing diversified membership. So now we do have bolt makers and bus makers and truck makers and mining companies and research centers and tech companies. So So that's it. So our mission is really to accelerate electric mobility in all forms and shapes. I would say that electric mobility is growing really fast these days around the world. And we also want to make sure that while we want to accelerate electric mobility, to lower greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, we also want to make sure that we create jobs in the process. So to me, we want to make sure that we have an EV supply chain that's made in Canada, and that we don't just end up extracting critical minerals in Canada to send elsewhere in the world like we have done so many times in the past. We want to develop our own industry. And this is happening right now. And, obviously, we do a lot of networking but amongst members, and we have our conference, you know, happening from September 27 to 29th. And we talk a lot to federal government, provincial governments, cities, some of which are members. And you're a member being City of Toronto [Ottawa]. So yeah, so that's what I do on a full time basis. That's what I've been doing for decades, actually. And we have a growing team; growing membership. So we're, it's really exciting, actually.   Dan Seguin  05:33 What's been the most significant event, innovation or policy that you think has changed the future trajectory for mass EV adoption? For the better?   Daniel Breton  05:46 Well, I think there's not one thing in particular, you know, that may have made it possible, I would say that's a growing, or it's a number of things. So obviously, battery technology has evolved quickly, over the past 10, 15, 20 years. Just to give you an example, between 2008 and 2020- volume density of battery has grown eight fold. So when you look at batteries, today, you have, you can have a lot more capacity, and a battery now than you had five years ago, 10 years ago, and it's going to keep growing as time goes by a lot of people seem to think that if you have let's say, a 60 kilowatt hour battery, it's going to be four times the size than a 15 kilowatt hour battery from let's say, 2010. Actually, it's not the case at all. It's just that is has more capacity, and the smaller volume per kilowatt hour, meaning that actually weight has not increased as fast as capacity. So to me, that's very important. The other thing is that infrastructure, infrastructure deployment and infrastructure, evolution has made a big difference. Just to give you an example. 10 years ago, the average electric car had 120 kilometers of range. Now it's 450. So in 10 years, it's quadrupled. At the same time, 10 years ago, if you wanted to charge your electric car, there was hardly any fast chargers on the road. So for example, when I was working in Montreal that I had to go to the National Assembly, I could not buy an electric car, I had to buy a plug in hybrid electric car, because there was no fast charger petrol between Montreal and Quebec. That's 10 years ago. Now, if you go five years ago, a fast charger had a 50 kilowatt charger. So that meant that we went from charging 120 kilometers of range in about four or five hours to charge charging 120 120 kilometers of range in about half an hour. And now with new fast chargers, you know, weighing you know going from 50 kilowatt to 150 kilowatt, 250 kilowatt and even 350 kilowatt, you can charge 120 kilometers of range in 10 minutes. So so things have accelerated regarding the technology of infrastructures as well. Education is making a big difference because more and more people are interested in EVs. There's still a lot of work that needs to be done. I'm often surprised to hear the same questions I was being asked 5, 10, 15, 20 years ago regarding battery life, for instance. But I still do get those questions on social media and even sometimes on regular media.   Rebecca Schwartz  08:55 On the other hand, what do you consider to be the most significant setback or barrier to the mass adoption of electric vehicles? Feel free to speak to Canada in general, and more specifically, right here in Ontario?   Daniel Breton  09:08 I would say it's education and training and supply. So that's the three the three things the three issues the roadblocks, first of all, supply. I mean, most EVs nowadays you have to wait between six months and three years to get your hands on one. So that's a real issue. We are supporting the federal government, and its will to adopt a federal ZEV (Zero-Emission Vehicle) mandate to make sure that we have more and more supply of electric cars across the country, but in Ontario in particular- I don't know if you remember this, but 11 years ago, the federal government and the Ontario government announced joint support for the assembly of the Toyota Rav4 EV. So both of them gave $70 million to assemble the Rav4 electric in Woodstock, Ontario, because there was no regulation no mandate in Ontario or in Canada for that matter, but because there was a mandat in California. And you have to keep in mind that back then there was a rebate of up to $8,500 in Ontario, even with the rebate 100% of these Toyota Rav4 EVs were sent to the US. So you could live two kilometers away from the plant, you could not buy one. So considering that now, the federal government and the Ontario government have invested billions of dollars into the assembly of either vehicles, or batteries, or cathodes or anodes across the country. We think that ZEV mandate is really, really super important for Ontario citizens. Because it would be a shame that we yet again, we would assemble electric vehicles and in Ontario, but because there are ZEV mandates, and 15 US states plus two Canadian provinces, while most if not all, of these electric vehicles assembled in Ontario would be sent elsewhere. So that's the first thing. The other thing is education, there's so much work that needs to be done. I mean, there's so there's so much disinformation or bad information, you know, going around in regular media, I mean, I read regular media on a daily basis about electric vehicles in English Canada, and I'm stunned to see how many bad articles written on electric vehicles. It's really bad. I mean, it used to be like that in Quebec, not so much anymore. There's a lot of work that needs to be done, and training, training for people to work in the auto industry. I did some training last year, for a car manufacturer, whose name I won't mention, but I was surprised to see how little they knew not only about the ecosystem, I mean, the chargers, the apps, the networks, but about their own product. I mean, I was teaching engineers at this manufacturer about their car. So to me, it shows how much work that there is still to do. Regarding the EV ecosystem- I often say when we're talking about electric vehicles, that when someone drives a gas car and wants to go to electric car, it's like saying, I've never owned a boat, I'm going to buy a boat. But there are a lot of different regulations when you are on the water because it's a different world. Well, it's a bit the same when you're talking about electric cars, because there are new things you need to learn about, in particular range, the way you use them on a daily basis. Winter driving, charging, obviously. So yeah, so education and training, I think is super important. And it's a roadblock right now.   Dan Seguin  13:12 Now, Daniel, what is your opinion of the adoption rates so far in Canada, which provinces or territories, or even companies are doing the best job at building an EV movement?   Daniel Breton  13:30 Well, I would say that provinces, obviously BC and Quebec are ahead of the curve. When you look at the Q1 EV sales number for Canada. While in Canada, we were at 7.7%. EV sales, according to Statscan. And BC, they were at 15.5%. So that's twice the national rate. And in Quebec, they were at 12.7%. At the meantime, Ontario was at 5.3%. So that shows that you need to have rebates. I think rebates are important, which you don't have anymore in Ontario, but you have to have mandates as well. Let me give you a perfect example of that. In BC, the rebate is up to $4,000 and Pei and New Brunswick it's $5,000. But because they have no mandate there, they have no supply so their their EV sales are below 5%. So I think it's very important to have both rebates and mandates regarding companies obviously Tesla is driving the charge. I mean, it's obvious. If you look at if if things keep rolling out like we are seeing today, the Tesla Model Y will be the best selling gas or electric vehicle in the world next year. I mean, this is no small feat. But so yeah, so Tesla is making a huge difference Tesla's a member of EMC, by the way, but we are seeing that some Korean manufacturers like Kia and Hyundai, are coming up with very interesting products. And I'm stunned to say this, but I think that the Japanese are being left in the dust, by even the Americans. And this is something I would have never predicted five or 10 years ago, we are seeing that there seems to be a lot of resistance on the part of Japanese manufacturers. And to me being old enough to remember, it looks to me a bit like what I saw in the 80s and the 90s, when the Japanese came really strong to the market, and they left the American manufacturers behind. So I think the Japanese manufacturers, not all of them, but most of them are going to have to wake up because right now they're really lagging behind.   Rebecca Schwartz  15:56 So we recently had Loren McDonald on the show, and he talked about how consumers need to shift the way that they think about EVs. He said that EVs are more like a smartphone that you charge every night and less like a traditional gas car that you head to the pumps for. Do you agree with that? And if you have a story or anecdote that you'd like to share, we'd love to hear it.   Daniel Breton  16:19 So well. I mean, obviously, EVs are becoming more and more like regular vehicles, because if you go back five or 10 years ago, as I mentioned, you know, a regular EV that was not $100,000, EVs had between 120 and 150 kilometers of range. So it was a very different story, then, my girlfriend still drives one of those EVs, I mean, she drives us a Smart Fourtwo electric, it has 100 kilometers of range, it doesn't even have fast charging. So so when she goes on the road, she she's aware of the way that this vehicle behaves, and the range that she can have winter or summer. But keep in mind that most Canadians, most families have more than one car nowadays. So I would say that the first EV, which would be like the family EV, which can be either a car or an SUV, or even a pickup truck is the one that you're going to use when you go traveling when you go on a trip when you go to see the family. And that one is the one that you drive every day because you use it every day. The second one, if you have a second car, it can be a smaller EV, or a plug in hybrid electric vehicle. And, and I always suggest to people not to buy two big cars with two big batteries. I think it's a waste from an economic point of view, and environmental point of view. So, so if you want to talk about anecdotes, I remember when my girlfriend first got her car. I mean, I remember the second or the third night we went to drive in movie. And the range were the range that she had left was about 25 kilometers. And you have to, to plug the vehicle you have to connect to the radio to hear the movie. And she was honestly she was freaking out because she said, I'm not gonna have enough range to go back. We can't watch all of the movie. So we did not we ended up going back home before the end of the movie. It took her was, say, a couple of weeks before she got used to the range of her vehicle. Keep in mind that it doesn't have a lot of range. Now that she knows how the car behaves, she's not stressed anymore. One thing that happens to all of us is at one point we forget to charge a car or to plug the car at night. You know, it happens to us once or twice, but most of the time, then you remember it's like your phone, you know one night you'll come back home, you're tired. You don't plug the phone the next morning say oh my god, I have no, I have no capacity. There's there's no range. So that's the type of thing that you learn from. It happens to you a couple of times and then you know, I would say. What do you think are the biggest social drivers for the recent uptick in EVs? Is it really the high price of gas? Or is it connected to something bigger? I think it's a few things I think first gas prices have made a huge difference. Because people are seeing that there's a really it's really interesting to buy an electric car with those gas prices. But more than that, the fact that there are more and more child choices of different models and shapes of EVs You know with the new F150 lightning coming to market, you know the Kia EV6, the Hyundai Ioniq 5. These are really appealing vehicles. So I think that choice and and price is making a big difference. I mean, I'm sure you saw that but a couple of weeks ago, GM announced that they were coming up with their new Equinox EV starting at $35,000. And I don't know if you know this, but I just saw the price for the base Honda CRV. It's $36,000. So now, if you look at small SUV, electric, small SUV gas. Without the rebate, the small SUV the CRV is even more expensive than the base version of the Equinox EV? So even though people say prices of EV keep going up and up and up. It's not necessarily true. It depends on the model. Yes, some people do want more expensive electric car. But let's be honest here. You know, many people who buy the base model of any vehicle, gas or electric, it doesn't happen. It just doesn't. So I would say that prices of vehicles have gone up way up actually gas or electric. But we are seeing at the same time. So I'm very competitive models in on the EV side, especially from GM and I have to salute them for that.   Dan Seguin  21:29 I've got a follow up question here for you. What are some of the overall benefits as a nation when we reach 100%, EV passenger sales by 2030 and all other vehicles by 2040?   Daniel Breton  21:44 Well, I would say that the first benefit is lower emissions is going to make a hell of a difference. Because you know, a lot of people say that GHG emissions from transportation represent 24% of Canada's total GHG emissions. But that's only downstream emissions. When you add upstream emissions, it's 30%, meaning that transportation is the number one source of GHG emissions in Canada. But that's GHG emissions, so lowering them by I would say 50 to 80%. Because you have to keep in mind that you have GHG emissions from electricity production, although it's getting much better. I mean, the last coal plant is going to close next year in Alberta. And and Nova Scotia intends to go I think it's 80% renewable by 2030. So as time goes by electric vehicles become cleaner and cleaner because the grid is becoming clearer and cleaner. So that's one thing. But the other thing, which is super important, and people seem to forget, is that according to Health Canada, they released a report on the impact of air pollution last year, the economic cost of air pollution is estimated at $120 billion, not millions, billions 120 billion from air pollution. And that's 15,300 premature deaths, which is eight times the death toll of car accidents. So if we bring more electric vehicles on the road, it's going to lower significantly air pollution, whether it's from light duty vehicles, or medium or heavy duty vehicles. So it's going to save billions of dollars to Canadians, help our healthcare system and save 1000s of lives. I mean, this is not insignificant. This is very important. And this is something I think that needs to be said. And last but not least- jobs. I've been talking about this, believe it or not, I've been coming to the House of Commons because from where I am, I can see the House of Commons right here because I'm in Gatineau this morning. I've been I started to talk about the EV industry about 15 or 16 years ago to the federal government saying that we need to transition our automotive sector from gas to electric because that's where the industry is going. So there was really not much of any interest for years. But now the federal government has really caught on I have to salute Minister Champagne for his leadership on this particular issue to make sure to attract EV assembly battery assembly battery manufacturing, critical minerals strategy. So we are seeing a real shift I mean you have to keep in mind that between 2000 and 2020 light duty vehicle production in Canada has been going down and down and down time and time again. We went from fourth biggest manufacturer in the world, to not even be the top 10 in 2020. Now, because the federal government, the Ontario government, the Quebec government and other Canadian governments are investing more and more on the EV supply chain in the EV industry, we are seeing a revival of the automotive sector in Ontario. And to me, this is significant. And if we hadn't done this, there will not be an automotive sector by 2030, or 2035. So this is huge.   Rebecca Schwartz  25:33 Electric Mobility Canada recently launched a 2030 EV action plan with the goal of highlighting how we get to an EV future by 2030. So what is this and what was involved in its creation?   Daniel Breton  25:48 Well, most members of EMC were involved with the creation of the 2030 EV action plan. So it meant, you know, manufacturers, it meant infrastructure providers, utilities, research centers. So I mean, we have a large pool of very qualified experienced people, or either staff or on our board, or our GR Committee on our MHD working group, or battery working group, our utilities working group, so all of these minds come together to say, this is what we recommend for the future of Canada regarding e-mobility. So so yeah, so it was a broad consultation amongst ourselves to see what kind of policies we could put in place to accelerate EV adoption. And I would say that the result has been significant, because we have seen a lot of interest from the federal government, amongst others. Regarding our recommendation, whether it was for- I'll give you an example, at the end of July, I was invited by a Minister Alghabra's Cabinet to be at his announcement for their new medium and heavy duty vehicle incentive program. Because we basically wrote the program, we sent it to them, we had some exchanges, and they said, this does make sense. And we learn from other programs elsewhere in the world or elsewhere in Canada. So I mean, it is significant. We're talking about more than half a billion dollars to accelerate EV adoption regarding any medium and heavy duty vehicles. Obviously, the infrastructure deployment program, almost a billion dollars is something that's going to make a big difference to accelerate EV adoption. This was also part of our recommendation and 2030 action plan. And but we're not stopping there to us that 2030 Action Plan was was an important, I would say, moment and EMCs history. But we are coming up with newer updated revised recommendations, new documents being published. So this is a, you know, this is a work in progress.   Dan Seguin  28:15 Okay, great. We're going to discuss the six pillars of the plan today, which I think covers a lot of the issues and concerns raised by many Canadians. Let's dig into pillar number one, light duty EV; consumer adoption. Some of the highlights under this pillar include price parity, with gas cars, some clever incentive proposal and removing caps for taxis, and ride sharing companies to move fully electric. Can you talk to some of these and what your ultimate goal with this pillar is?   Daniel Breton  28:58 Well, this pillar is to not only encourage EV adoption, but discourage gas guzzler adoption, because we have what we call, you know, the fee based system that we recommend. I've been talking about this for more than 10 years. Because, while people are buying more and more EVs at the same time they're buying more and more light trucks, gas light trucks. And this is an issue because we see that, you know, what most manufacturers offer now is more and more SUVs, pickup trucks and crossovers. So cars are less and less bought by Canadians because there are less and less manufacturers by OEMs. You know, if you go to a Toyota dealer, there's no honda fit anymore. There's no Yaris anymore, but there's more and more of those SUVs. So so for us a fee based system, I think is a recommendation that's important, but it's not an easy one to adopt. We have not seen anyone in North America I'd love the feedback system yet. We it has shown to be very effective in Europe. But it's it's an issue. And you know, in North America and Canada and Canada in particular when one thing that I'm really focusing on is the fact that for us, it doesn't make sense that, you know, car sharing companies, car hauling companies would have a cap of 10 vehicles that can get the federal rebate. Because not only do we want to encourage the transition to EVs, but especially in downtown areas, we want to make sure that if people don't know don't need to buy a car, and they can use a car sharing service, well, they should be encouraged to do so. And the car sharing services should be encouraged to electrify their fleet. So for us, this cap has to go. This is something I've been discussing with people in the federal government. And we are coming up with more data and information, you know, explaining why we need this. Other than that, no, you're we're talking about evey rebate for for used vehicles. This is actually in one of the mandate letters. And it has been in the mandate letters for a number of years now at the federal level, the program has still not been put together. So we are anxiously waiting to see what's going to happen with this. And last but not least, I don't know if you know about this. But in California, there is a particular rebate on top of the regular rebate for low income individuals and families who want to buy an electric car. So we think that this is something important for people who have, you know, we're not as affluent to be able to buy an electric car.   Rebecca Schwartz  31:52 So Daniel in pillar two you discuss medium heavy duty and off road fleet electrification and a number of rebates, tax credits, and offsetting costs for electrical infrastructure. What are some of the key takeaways? And what about the tools and restrictions for large polluters? Can you speak to that a little bit?   Daniel Breton  32:13 Well, I would say that what we are seeing because of this very important announcement from Minister Alghabra, this summer, what we are seeing now is that the main issue or the main challenge is infrastructure. Let's say you are a transit agency, and you want to buy a whole fleet of electric buses, you have to charge them. And the garages that we have in Canada have not been planned this way. So we have to really either adapt them or build new garages. But this is something that can be done. I mean, right now, there's less than 1000 electric buses in Canada, closer to 600. and China, they have more than 600,000 electric buses. And I was I was told a few years ago by someone from a trade transit agency whose name I won't mention that, because in this particular city that this person worked in population density made it harder for them to electrify buses. So I couldn't help but reply that, yes, because China, as we all know, does have a lot of people. So so to me, that was it was not an argument. I mean, if you want to plan this, you'll find a way. I mean, this, you know, there's the saying, you know, if if you want to do it, you find a way if you don't want to do it, you find an excuse. So to me, this is really a challenge regarding, you know, transit fleets, we're talking about trucks. Well, depo charging is going to be very important. But right now, this is not something that's been planned or budgeted in the federal government's programs. So we are looking to try and recommend to the government that we put together a particular program for medium and heavy duty vehicle infrastructure, this is something that we that needs to be done. And regarding off road vehicles, so off road vehicles is a different issue because a lot of people seem to think that if you buy a snowmobile, or Sea-Doo or a side by side, that it's just for fun, but a lot of people work with these snowmobiles and see those and side by side because they work in a park that they work at a ski station, work on a construction site. So keep in mind that our regulars, modern snowmobiles, it pollutes as much talking about air pollution here as 40 modern cars, gas cars. So from an air pollution point of view, it's a big win for people to adopt electric off road vehicles. So that's why we are pushing for that as well. Not to mention the fact that some of the companies making those side by sides and snowmobiles are Canadian companies. So it's not only good for the air pollution, but it's also good for job creation as well. And expertise. I mean, after all, I mean, where else then in Canada, should we have electric snowmobiles to start with I mean, it should be starting here. And it is starting here.   Dan Seguin  35:47 Okay, at least 1/3 of Canadians live in multi unit residential buildings today. Under pillar number three, you go into some details about the national EV infrastructure deployment plan. What are the targets and recommendations you believe are needed when it comes to public charging and making condos and apartments EV ready?   Daniel Breton  36:15 Well, there needs to be some regulation put together either by provinces or cities to accelerate EV adoption and merge, you know, multi unit residential buildings. Actually, I learned just a few days ago that the city of Laval, Quebec has put together an EV ready regulation that says something we are seeing in BC. And this is something we should see across the board across the country. Because it's not just about, you know, incentives for people to install EV chargers in condominiums, because some, some condo owners and all their their syndicate. They simply don't want that they don't allow for that to but to be able to, you know, for people to install them. So we think that there needs to be regulation so that, you know, there should be a right to charge. And this is something very important. We are asking the federal government but other governments as well, to make sure that at least we have at least a million chargers by 2030 across the country. We think it's very important because yes, public charging is key. But let's face it 80 to 90% of charging happens where? At home or at work. So if we have both public chargers and verb chargers and home chargers, this is the only way we're going to be able to reach our targets regarding EV options.   Dan Seguin  37:50 Okay, here's a follow up question for you, Daniel. Where do you see utilities playing a role in the 2030 EV action plan?   Daniel Breton  38:01 They will play a big role. I mean, they have so much to win from EV transition, that it's really surprising that some utilities don't see the interest. I wouldn't say that Canadian utilities don't see the interest, I would say that most of them do. Most utilities in Canada are members of EMC, we have a utilities working group, they are looking at ways to help this transition it both from a technological point of view from a planning point of view, and from a regulatory point of view. So they do play a big role. But I was part of a discussion last year with people in the Ontario government. Because a lot of people in government were saying how much is this infrastructure deployment going to cost? You know, people in Ontario and utilities. And I said, I asked this question to a person from the Federal from the Ontario government. I said them, you know how much it costs you to import oil to make diesel and gas in Ontario on a monthly basis? And that person said no. So I looked at how much Ontario cars and trucks consume on a monthly basis. And I made a calculation that's $60 a barrel, which was lower a year ago, you know, and back then it added up to $1.2 billion a month. So if you take that $1.2 billion a month that just flies out of Ontario because Ontario is not a province that produces oil, and you bring it back in and you put that money into infrastructure and jobs and electricity production from Ontario utilities. It's a lot more money that stays in Ontario $1.2 billion a month is a lot of money. So that means that we, Ontario does have the means to electrify its fleet and to update and yeah, to update its grid.   Rebecca Schwartz  40:10 Next, what are the benefits to the government launching a national 2030, EV strategy and regulation? And why is this so important?   Daniel Breton  40:19 Well, that's something that we are seeing already, you know, with the very important announcement that have been made by Prime Minister Trudeau, Minister Champagne, Minister Wilkinson, because keep in mind that when we're talking about create job creation, and and the EV sector, it's not just about car assembly or truck assembly or bus assembly, it's also about infrastructure, manufacturing, you know, whether we're talking about level two chargers, you know, the main sponsor of our e 2022. Conference is Grizzly, which is a company based in Ontario, and they make residential chargers, but they're going to start making public chargers, and they're doing it in a way that's very efficient. So that's show creation as well, where we're talking about construction jobs for those infrastructures, where we're talking about mining jobs, and processing jobs. So there was a report released by the International Energy Agency a few days ago, that said, that stated that right now, in Canada, we are right now about at 50/50 when we're talking about the percentages of job, and fossil fuel versus renewables, and electric mobility, and that's 2022. But we all know that between now and 2030, the number of jobs created, and renewables and green mobility is going to be much higher than in fossil fuels. So this is very important. We're talking job creation, you know, from the whole spectrum. We're going from mining to mobility.   Rebecca Schwartz  42:06 Okay, so a quick follow up for you, though, a couple of items under the fourth pillar that we found to be interesting was the Green SCRAP-IT program and your recommendation to help rural northern First Nations and Inuit communities? Can you briefly talk about those and the rationale?   Daniel Breton  42:26 Well, the Green SCRAP-IT program is inspired by stuff that we are seeing that we have seen in Quebec and BC, because of what we're seeing is that for people who drive older vehicles, whether it's for individual cars, or old buses, for instance, because some of those buses have been on a roll for a long time, and their pollution levels are through the roof. So we want to help either it's companies, individuals, or transit authorities, school boards, to transition to electric vehicles, whether it's, you know, cars, trucks, buses, school buses. But it's a way for us to make sure that we do accelerate the transition, but it regarding individual vehicles, what we are saying is that we should accelerate scrappage program. But what some people are saying in the industry is that should people should, you know, just get rid of the old car and be able to buy a new car, and it could be a gas car. So we don't agree with that. But not only that, when people let's say somebody gets rid of his or her Honda Civic, and decides to buy a brand new Honda CRV, well, air pollution is going to be lower, but GHG emissions is going to be higher because it's a bigger car. And GHG emissions are directly linked to fuel consumption. So it's not because you buy a new car that necessarily it's that good for the environment. So that's why we're saying our SCRAP-IT program should be linked either to the purchase of electric vehicle, but it can also be a transit pass. It can be an electric bike, it can be car sharing service, carpooling service, because, yes, electric mobility is a key ingredient in the solution to lower GHG emissions, or we're talking about transportation, but it's not the only one. So that's why because I've been working at this for decades. I know that we have to also encourage, you know, collective transportation, active transportation, car sharing, carpooling, commute work. All of this is part of solution when we're trying to find not only ways to lower GHG emissions but to lower traffic congestion as well. Regarding First Nations and remote communities, I live in the country. I don't live downtown Montreal for though because we hear that very often, you know, oh yeah, electric cars are only good for those who live in the city and try, you know, a commute around the city. While actually when you look at the Cape, the Quebec data 75% of EV owners in Quebec live outside of Quebec and Montreal, why? For a very simple reason, because they have either a garage or a driveway, it's a lot easier to plug your car, when you have garage or driveway, than when you live in a suburb. I'm sure you know this as well as I do. But for those who live further down, you know, let's say you live in northern Saskatchewan, or in northern Ontario. And you say, well, it's going to be really hard for me to be able to have access to electric car, or to drive the long distances that we need to drive we live in, we live far away? Well, first of all, there seems to be some misconception about the fact that Canada is a big country, and therefore we drive a lot. We do a lot of mileage. That's just not true. Okay? The average driving from Canadians on a daily basis to go to work and back 80% of Canadians drive 60 kilometers or less to go to work and back. So what that means is that, no, it's actually 80 kilometers and back 80 kilometers to go to work and back. So. But this is very important, because most Canadians don't drive that much. I mean, the average driving habits of Canadians from the latest data, which is not new by any means, because the latest data that we found from the federal government was 2009. Believe it or not, this is so outdated, I can't believe it. But anyway, we were at 17,000 kilometers approximately. So 17,000 kilometers, is not that much driving. I mean, I because I travel a lot for my work, I drive more than 50,000 kilometers a year. So having an electric car and driving a lot is no issue. What we need is to make sure that remote communities have access to chargers, fast chargers, in particular, when you get out of the 401, the 417, the 15 the trans Canadian when you go more up north, it is an issue for many regions in Canada, especially when you live in the prairies. I've heard some people, you know, look for chargers didn't know where they were because no one explained to them, where to plug the vehicle, there were only level two chargers. So infrastructure is a real issue. For those who really live, you know, outside are most of the grid, you know, when you live in Nunavut, or Nunavik are, you know, you count the Northwest Territories. There are more and more chargers being deployed, then very often people who live there buy SUVs or pickup trucks. So now that we're seeing more and more SUVs and pickup trucks coming to market, it's becoming less of a challenge, but they do need to get them delivered over there. That's the first thing. The second thing for those who would be, I would say, more anxious about the fact that when it's minus 30 minus 40. You know, you lose up to 50%. And rage, worse comes to worse, you can always buy a plug in hybrid electric vehicle. Mean, meaning that you know, you're going to have some range, especially in the summer. In the winter, not so much. So, but but the truth of the matter is that, you know, I've been driving EVs for I've been driving partial and full EVs for 23 years now. So I know that even at minus 20, I've been going to Saguenay they actually were organized an EV day, and Saguenay in January at minus 25 minus, minus 30. We're 20 of us from Avec. I was with Avec back then we drove all the way up there. And no one had an issue. You just need to have the infrastructure and that's an issue. Right now. In Northern Ontario. It is an issue. And we are seeing that in northern provinces. We're in BC and Quebec I would say.   Dan Seguin  49:07 When it comes to federal leadership with respect to EVs in your sixth and last pillar, what is the government doing right? And what are your recommendations for improvement?   Daniel Breton  49:21 Well, I would say that what the government is doing right for EV adoption at the federal level, is that they are helping more and more departments by EVs. So to me, this is this is key, but we need to install a lot more chargers in federal buildings and federal parking that we have right now. As I mentioned, you know, I'm right across the river from the House of Commons. And I think that I see like less than 10 chargers at the House of Commons. To me this is far from being enough. When I was in Norway in June, we went to a city called Arendal, about 300 kilometers away from Oslo. And it's a small city 40,000 people. And there was an underground parking over there that could accommodate about 150 cars. There were 70 chargers. So, so we have a lot of catching up to do. Let's put it that way. And on that topic, I have to mention this. When I was in government, in in my government plan for the government of Quebec, 10 years ago, we had a plan to electrify ferries. So when we lost our election, you know, the the electrification of ferry fell, you know, in the cracks. When I was in Norway in June, I learned that there's 825 ferries in Norway, eight wto five 825 ferries in Norway. 400 of those 400 of those ferries are already electric. And the largest electric ferry in Norway can accommodate 600 people and 200 cars. So I think that if the Canadian government wanted to electrify its ferry lines, it would be a great opportunity for the marine industry in Canada to develop a new skill and create all you industry actually.   Rebecca Schwartz  51:33 So something that I thought was fascinating in this pillar was the zero emission zone in downtown Ottawa. Can you tell us what that is and why you recommended it or called out Ottawa specifically?   Daniel Breton  51:45 Well, I think it's because it's the symbol. I mean, Ottawa is the capital of Canada. So if we have a zero emission zone in Ottawa, I think it will send a strong signal that people could not drive gas or diesel vehicles in that particular area.   Dan Seguin  52:01 Okay, Daniel, we always end our interviews with some rapid fire questions. And we have a few for you. Are you ready?   Daniel Breton  52:11 Go ahead.   Dan Seguin  52:12 Okay. Here's number one. What are you reading right now?   Daniel Breton  52:17 Oh, my God. That's funny, because, you know, I used to read a lot of novels when I was younger. Now all I read is sports. I need that I read battery reports and I need books and I read everything related to electric mobility. The oil industry energy transition. So basically, most of the reading that I do is scientific or economic. That's That's my bedtime reading. Yeah.   Dan Seguin  52:48 Okay. What would you name your boat? If you had one?   Daniel Breton  52:54 I don't have one because I'm an old time windsurfer. So I live, I mean, my house is by the St. Lawrence River. So I windsurf in my backyard. So and I don't intend to have a boat. But I I keep windsurfing. Even though I turned 60 this year. I want to die windsurfing. Want to wind surf until I die. So yeah.   Dan Seguin  53:18 Moving on to the next one who is someone that you admire?   Daniel Breton  53:23 I admire a lot of people. It's hard to tell. Because I mean, so many people that I admire, I mean, believe it or not my I said my girlfriend but my wife because I got to wait three weeks ago. Thanks. She met with the Dalai Lama a few years ago, because she used to be a member of parliament and she was the only Buddhist Member of Parliament. So she met with the Dalai Lama. So that's a person that I really admire. Nelson Mandela, I really admire obviously, being from Quebec and native and you have to keep in mind that there and Ivanka has done a lot. For those who are in Ontario. You know, a lot of people think about independence, but when I think about going to the bank, I think about metal she knew when he was natural resources minister, and, and they held the referendum election of the nationalization of electricity 1962 And that helped propel Hydro Quebec from a small company to one of the biggest forces in the world regarding electricity production, and cleaning, electricity production for that matters. There's not a size and a need Ivanka are really important in my mind, I would say and even though he is controversial, I would say Elon Musk, you know, I mean, he's done so much. And he is such a leader and and you ways of doing things, but I don't always agree with him. But I have to say that when you work in electric mobility, it was what if it was not for him? We will not be there today.   Dan Seguin  55:10 What is the closest thing to real magic that you've witnessed?   Daniel Breton  55:15 That's a good question. Real closest thing to real magic, I would say is that it was the night that I saw an aurora borealis. It's very spectacular.   Dan Seguin  55:28 Okay, let's move on here. What has been the biggest challenge to you personally, since the pandemic began?   Daniel Breton  55:36 To me personally, I mean, a lot of people close to me, I've got COVID, my mother's got COVID, she's been very sick. So many people close to me, either, were really sick. A friend of mine, you know, fell in a coma for almost 20 days. So I thought he was going to die. Another friend of mine, 52 years old, died from COVID. So so this is at, you know, this hit home really hard. For me as see point of view, keep in mind that I started at EMC on March 9 2020. And, and the first thing that I did as CEO of EMC, was to cancel a conference. So my first decision was to cancel a very important event for EMC for its members. And I remember, I cancelled it like March 15, like a week after I had come in. So people were really not sure about what I was doing, because it was this new guy canceling the conference. Is he nuts, but I was just, you know, in front of the curve. So it was complicated for us. Because since I would say that I was pretty much the only one to cancel an event of any big event or conference in 2020. I had a lot of issues with hotels and people that we paid for, because they said, not gonna happen. What you're saying doesn't make sense, these events will happen. We don't want to reimburse you. So we had to fight for months and months to get our money back. Because at one point, everybody came to the conclusion that there was no other way around this. But it was a couple of months that were really very hard. I can tell you that.   Dan Seguin  57:27 We've all been watching a lot of Netflix or TV lately. What's your favorite movie, or show?   Daniel Breton  57:37 Right now? I watched a series called the Casa de Pepe. It's a Spanish TV series. It's super weird, but it's very interesting. And, and the other one that I've been watching recently, because keep in mind that my wife is Vietnamese. So it's a short call, I think career plan or something like that about an Asian woman who was a lawyer. And it's it's served career and it's her path in life. And my girlfriend is a career woman, she has been very successful. So this is something that we watch together.   Rebecca Schwartz  58:17 Okay, lastly, what's exciting you about your industry right now?   Daniel Breton  58:21 Oh, my God. I would say that it's just this- listen, I've been talking about EV and EV adoption and EV industry for decades now. So for for many years, I felt like I was, you know, this nut case, you know, that walks around, you know, the cities, you know, repent. The end is near, you know, I felt like because I was talking about I was talking about, you know, climate change, because I studied and climate change. That's what I studied in when I was in university. So to me at one point around 2005 or so, I said, we have to talk, we have to stop talking only about depressing stuff and start talking about solutions. And that's when in 2005 I said I have to make it a goal of mine to find ways to accelerate EV adoption. That was 17 years ago, I created MCN 21 back then; wrote books on the subject. I've written many books on the subject. But still until five years ago, I mean, there were only a few of us. Now that we are seeing car manufacturers, truck manufacturers, plane manufacturers. You know, jumping and jumping on the bandwagon of electric mobility. It's very exciting. And I mean, I didn't even take a vacation this summer because there was so much job so many consultations, so many reports. So much stuff to do. So at one point I said that to federal employee I said you know oh, well, I mean, I would be nuts to complain, because I have too much work because I've been asking for this for many years. But I would say the most exciting thing is just the vibe. You know, it's just, it's just that. I mean, it's a hot topic nowadays. I mean, just two years ago, because I've been, I've been, I'm well known in Quebec, a lot of people know me, people. I know, people, people know me. I'm all over the media. But in the rest of Canada, it was not such a hot topic to talk about electric mobility until maybe a year ago, two years ago, the most. But now every week, you know, I'm not the only one. But a lot of people now do interviews about electric mobility, electric cars, and the chargers. And some of those articles, as I mentioned, are really bad. But I mean, we are talking more and more about this. So the old excitement, you know about this transition, I think is is is very encouraging. And I know that all of us will have worked for decades to come, because this is only the beginning.   Rebecca Schwartz  1:01:07 All right, Daniel. Well, that's it. We are locked and loaded at ASOTU CON this morning as we talk about the conversations and energy we're feeling from the ground. We also talk about Chevy's first 30k EV Equinox and what it could mean for overall affordability. Chevy announces the starting price of its 2024 Equinox EV is coming in at a $30K price point250-mile driving range, with higher-priced trims offering up to 300 miles. GM's most affordable vehicle powered by the Ultium battery platform which is the same that powers the Silverado, Lyric and Hummer70 miles of range in 10 minutes. It's Thursday 10th March, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. 2024 CHEVY BLAZER EV WILL HAVE AN SS PERFORMANCE VARIANT - Chevrolet's Blazer crossover is going electric for the 2024 model year with the launch of the Blazer EV and a teaser video released today indicates a performance-oriented SS trim will be part of the lineup - The Blazer follows an onslaught of other electric vehicle announcements from General Motors, including the GMC Hummer EV and Chevy Silverado EV pickup trucks, all of which use the company's Ultium battery technology. - Earlier this year, Chevrolet revealed the first images of the Equinox EV, an electric SUV sharing the name of the company's popular compact crossover. - Chevy says that the Blazer will be the company's first EV to gain a performance SS badge when it debuts later this year. - The Blazer SS will go on sale in spring of 2023 Original Source : https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a39384135/2024-chevy-blazer-ev-ss-performance-variant/ CHEVY TEASES ITS FIRST PERFORMANCE ELECTRIC VEHICLE, THE 2024 BLAZER EV SS - The automaker revealed little about the Blazer at CES, though, preferring instead to share details about the Equinox. Bidirectional charging capabilities offer a higher level of electric resiliency and less reliability on the grid, especially during peak times. - The pilot includes the use of bidirectional hardware that's paired with software-defined communications protocols that will enable power to flow from a charged EV battery into a customer's home. The software will automatically coordinate between the EV, home and PG&E's electric supply from the street. - The pilot will test bidirectional power technology with multiple GM EVs. - Last month, Ford announced a partnership with San Francisco-based Sunrun, a provider of residential solar panels and home batteries that allows Ford F-150 Lightning owners to use their truck's substantial battery reserves as a home's emergency power source. - To use Ford's Intelligent Backup Power, customers will need to install the Ford Charge Station Pro and Home Integration System, which includes a power inverter plus a dark start battery and transfer switch, enabling two-way power flow between the home and vehicle. Surprisingly, German officials said at the time that they expected Tesla to fulfill all those conditions within the next two weeks. - March 22 will mark an important step for Tesla by starting deliveries of European-made vehicles and putting it on a path of better logistical efficiency. This would allow the public water supply to be maintained, the Ministry of the Environment told the DPA. - On Friday evening, the Administrative Court of Frankfurt (Oder) had declared the water permit issued in 2020 “unlawful and unenforceable”. - In a first reaction, the Straußberg-Erkner Water Association (WSE) had demanded that the state tolerate the water pumping until the procedure was made up for. - However, the 1.4 million cubic metres of water actually contractually guaranteed by the WSE for Tesla would only be needed when the carmaker in Grünheide has actually reached its full capacity of 500,000 cars per year. In the case of Model 3 RWD and LR AWD, the estimated delivery time to Germany has jumped to February 2023. This is just shy of a full year away. - This is true for the customers in Germany, France, and United Kingdom. The waiting time is significantly longer than what people in the North American market are facing. At the moment, March 18th is the project date for a return to normal activities however that could change at any moment. - One of the main missing parts of wiring harnesses which were made in Ukraine. Part production was halted once Russia invaded the country according to Automotive News Europe. - Mercedes-Benz has halted S-Class and EQS production at its Sindelfingen plant near Stuttgart. Benz's neighbours, Porsche, deferred Taycan output at its Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen factory. - Porsche specified that about 200 Taycans will not be built. Welcome to a new Patreon Producer NETZ HOG. 2024 CHEVROLET SILVERADO EV MAKES WORLD DEBUT AT CES - Chevrolet has finally lifted the veils off its first all-electric pickup truck, the 2024 Silverado EV based on GM's Ultium EV platform. - Going head to head with the Ford F-150 Lightning, the Silverado EV has the major advantage of being built from the ground up as an electric vehicle—the Lightning uses a modified version of the ICE F-150 platform. - In the fall of 2023, Chevrolet will introduce the fully loaded Silverado EV RST First Edition model with a 400-mile range and an MSRP of $105,000 (plus destination and freight charges). - This model (as well as non-First Edition RST variants) will pack 664 horsepower and more than 780 lb-ft (1,056 Nm) of torque from an e4WD system with the available max power Wide Open Watts Mode, enabling 0-60 acceleration in under 4.5 seconds. - Customers splurging more than a hundred grand on the RST First Edition will also get goodies like four-wheel steering, Automatic Adaptive Air Suspension (raises or lowers up to 2 inches/50 mm), Multi-Flex Midgate that expands cargo capability while maintaining seating for a rear row passenger, and available Multi-Flex Tailgate with power release. Unlike Lightning, which uses a familiar F-150 ladder frame, the Silverado EV makes a clean break from its petrol-powered Silverado stablemate with an all-new platform based on GM's 800-volt Ultium battery skateboard and capable of fast, 350-kW charging. It's the same architecture that cradles the Hummer EV — GMC's first foray into the e-pickup space. - The retail strategy will initially target premium EV buyers who also have the coin for, say, a $105k Mercedes EQS EV. Pickups like the Silverado High Country have become prized by luxury items in recent years, though the RST EV will cost $40,000 more than a fully-loaded V8-powered High Country. - he high-voltage platform rivals the Porsche and Lucid Air luxury cars and can add 100 miles of range in 10 minutes at a fast charger. The Chevy's 400-mile range bests Lightning by 100 miles. - A flying buttress C-pillar — reminiscent of the 2013 Chevy Avalanche pickup — frames the 5' 11” bed that can be extended to 9 feet (10' 10” with the tailgate down) by dropping the Multi-Flex Midgate wall and window behind the rear, crew-cab passengers. It's not as radical looking as the angular Tesla Cybertruck, but it's distinct from traditional, boxy Silverados. The gate can be split 60/40 — or drop flat with storage for the removable window. The rear Multi-Flex Tailgate offers multi-functionality like walk-in steps or a work table. - The Silverado EV will be assembled alongside the Hummer EV at the Factory Zero Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center, the plant retooled with an EV-focused, $2.2 billion investment. The Rivian R1T will be priced from the high $60,000 to low $70,000 range to start, but the price can quickly escalate with options. The GMC Hummer EV pickup available at launch will be priced at more than $112,000, with cheaper versions coming in later years. When the Cybertruck was revealed, Tesla said it would cost between $40,000 and $70,000 depending on configuration, but like all Tesla prices, those are subject to change. The automaker accompanied its electric pickup news at CES 2022 today with the confirmation that an Chevrolet Equinox EV SUV is coming, along with a larger Chevrolet Blazer EV SUV. - Both the Equinox EV SUV and the Blazer EV SUV will be arriving in the US in 2024, the former in the fall and the latter in the spring. - The Equinox EV SUV will be priced from around $30,000, Chevrolet says, plus destination and other fees, and before incentives. It'll be offered in both fleet and retail versions, too, including in LT and RS trims as Chevy showed off in its images today. As with the Silverado EV, Cadillac Lyriq, and GMC HUMMER EV, the Equinox EV will be based on GM's Ultium platform dedicated to electric vehicles. - What makes the news so important is just how strong a seller the existing Equinox is in Chevrolet's line-up, and among compact SUVs in general. MERCEDES-BENZ EV SALES UPDATE In the first three quarters of the year, sales of hybrid and electric vehicles surged to a record 184,369 units (+142.7%). The Mercedes-Benz EQC sold 17,938 units and the EQA achieved a record 13,021 deliveries thanks to robust demand for zero-emission cars, particularly in Q3 when almost half of all EQ deliveries occurred. The EQS electric flagship went on sale in August. Overall 61,652 plug-in hybrids and all-electric cars were sold in Q3 (+34.1%) of which 19,298 were electric-only vehicles (+38.0%). https://www.daimler.com/investors/reports-news/financial-news/20211006-mercedes-benz-sales-q3.html MERCEDES TO ADD 300 JOBS AT U.S. PLANT IN PREPARATION FOR EV PRODUCTION "Mercedes-Benz will add about 300 jobs at its Alabama assembly plant by the end of this year as the luxury automaker gears up to build electric utility vehicles." reports Automotive News for subscribers: "The factory, in the town of Vance, employs 4,400 and is a production hub for the Mercedes GLS and GLE utility vehicles. Starting next year, it will produce battery-powered versions of the two popular vehicles. Mercedes is hiring for the assembly, body and paint shops, as well as the battery plant, where workers will assemble high-voltage EV battery systems." EQS starts in Q2 and EQE in Q4. Read more: https://www.autonews.com/manufacturing/mercedes-add-300-jobs-us-plant-preparation-ev-production CHEVROLET BLAZER IS THE UNFORTUNATELY NAMED NEXT CHEVY'S EV "General Motors has been in the news recently for battery fires related to its Chevrolet Bolt EV, but that hasn't slowed the automaker's electrified ambitions." says Tech Radar: "Speaking at the From Automaker to Platform Innovator event, GM President Mark Reuss confirmed the names of two upcoming Chevrolet EVs and the company has dropped hints on more electric offerings from Buick and other brands in its portfolio. At the event, Reuss mentioned two new EV SUVs by name, first confirming an electric version of the Chevrolet Equinox is on its way. Reuss noted that the Equinox EV will be a high-volume model with a starting price of around $30,000.  The other SUV on Chevy's EV list is the Blazer - a mid-size crossover SUV which has been around since 2019 and will now be blessed with a fully electric drivetrain." It was September 2019. His secret weapon, tucked deep into a chart-heavy presentation, was a bug-eyed cargo truck built by a startup few people had heard of." says Bloomberg in the second of their Rivian series: "The order immediately separated the auto rookie from the parade of promising electric startups, providing backing, a big book of business and legitimacy. It also would soon start to draw in additional investment from major players, including Ford Motor Co." Bloomberg adds: "On Friday, Rivian shared new details of the Amazon deal in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, revealing how closely its fate is tied to one of its biggest benefactors. The e-commerce giant will have exclusive rights to Rivian's delivery vehicles for four years after receiving its first one, and it gets right of first refusal to buy the vans for two years after that. There's a clear recognition inside Rivian and with its investors that the van for Amazon is a priority and the pickup a sideshow until production can be ramped up to meaningful volumes. The deal gives Rivian visibility and guaranteed revenue, along with a deadline. An all-hands-on-deck edict has been issued to get the project up to speed — for now, the R1T is taking a back seat." As for the subscriptions their owners can take, Rivian say: “Rivian defines LTR (Lifetime Revenue) potential as the revenue it can generate from its Rivian vehicles throughout its lifetime (considered to be 10 years), if the owner, in this case, subscribes to everything possible. Level 3 driving capabilities account for $10,000, and a monthly subscription plan for infotainment, connectivity, diagnostics, and other services accounts for the other $5,500.” Read more: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-10-06/how-amazon-pushed-rivian-s-van-into-the-fast-lane RIVIAN ADVENTURE NETWORK PRICING AND ACCESS On the charging network: "RAN sites will be exclusive for Rivian owners initially, with Rivian members receiving special rates." InsideEVs says: "The upcoming Rivian Adventure Network (RAN) of DC fast chargers is promised to quickly expand to about 600 sites in the U.S. and Canada with a total of more than 3,500 DC fast chargers by the end of 2023 (see details here). According to Rivian, chargers will be exclusively available to R1T and R1S drivers, but only "initially". At a later point, the network will be opened to other EVs, which is a positive sign and good news for those who were afraid that Rivian's chargers will not be available to the public. Besides Rivian Adventure Network, the company will deploy also about 10,000 Rivian Waypoints charging points by 2023. Those are 11.5 kW AC charging points, envisioned for destination locations or places where drivers spend more time - shops, restaurants, hotels and parks. Those points will be available for all EV drivers." Read more: https://insideevs.com/news/539566/rivian-adventure-network-charging/ REFRESHED MG ZS EV DEBUTS WITH BIGGER BATTERY "MG Motors unveiled the facelifted all-electric version of the ZS, featuring a grille-less look, new infotainment, and a larger battery pack option for an increased range. The MG ZS EV first appeared in 2018 and quickly became popular thanks to its competitive pricing. The facelifted model will reach dealerships this November with the intention of making the electric SUV even more attractive to European buyers." according to CarScoops: "ZS EV gets the new LED headlights and taillights of its ICE-powered sibling but adopts a different front bumper that distinguishes it further. The grille is fully covered with a new pattern while the side intakes are smaller giving the car a cleaner and more aerodynamic look.  Inside, the 10.1-inch touchscreen incorporates the new MG iSMART infotainment system with new features, remote control functions, and more connectivity options.  the most important change has to do with the new bigger 72 kWh battery pack offering a 273-mile (439 km) WLTP range. In 2022, MG will also offer a cheaper variant with a smaller 51 kWh battery pack offering a range of 198 miles (319 km)." Not in the UK, though, as the Chinese-owned British automaker has yet to announce details about a possible launch in its home market. Described as the largest and most luxurious MG, the Marvel R Electric is a C-segment SUV offering a choice of two powertrains and starting prices of €39,990 ($46,250) for the base RWD model and €47,990 ($55,500) for the range-topping AWD version." reports InsideEVs: "It offers two all-electric powertrains, one with rear-wheel drive and one with all-wheel drive. Both feature the same 70 kWh battery which enables a WLTP range of 402 kilometers (250 miles) in the Comfort and Luxury RWD trim levels. These models feature two rear-mounted electric motors with a system output of 132 kW (177 hp). The AWD model, available exclusively in the range-topping Performance trim level, adds an electric motor to the front axle for a system output of 212 kW (284 hp). Customers will benefit from quick charging capability at a public charging point (AC) due to the standard 11 kW 3-phase on-board charger. The battery can also be charged at a fast-charging station (DC) with a capacity of up to 92 kW. All models are also fitted with a V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) system as standard, allowing the battery to supply energy to an external electrical system at a maximum load capacity of 2,500W. The company has secured the US$4.4 billion needed by the end of next year through its IPO, but does not want to wait until then to raise further capital." says electrive.com: "Rawlinson explained that the capital raised so far “takes us to the end of 2022, so it doesn't take us to Project Gravity.” Gravity is the name of the brand's second electric vehicle." This weekend Nicole is visiting her daughters and Robbie is taking care of a family medical emergency, so Sam is joined by Perry Stern and Stephanie Brinley. Stephanie has been driving a Toyota GR Corolla on winter tires and Perry has the new GMC Terrain. Sam drove a Honda Ridgeline Trailsport to Ohio to visit Honda's new EV hub.In the news, is there a chance that GM could sell a rebadged version of Hyundai's Korean Staria minivan? Kia is sending its more affordable EV5 electric crossover to Canada, but has no US plans for it. VW has also cancelled plans to bring the ID7 sedan to America. Polestar has put together winter rally special versions of all three of its current models. In the auctions, someone actually paid over $71,000 for a Honda CR-X. Sam and Steph drove the new Toyota 4Runner, on road and off. The Trump administration has imposed 25% tariffs on all imports from Canada and Mexico and vehicles are going to get way more expensive in the coming weeks. Over the past week we've had an assortment of travel and gigs but we're back in the saddle with fresh material. Now that the embargo has lifted, Robbie can finally share his thoughts on driving the VW ID Buzz, while Nicole had the new Kia Sportage. Before heading out to San Francisco, Sam had the Volvo C40 Recharge and while in the Bay area he drove a Chevrolet Bolt EV.In the news, we've seen a bunch of new upcoming products in the leadup to the return of the much diminished Detroit Auto Show. The week before the show, Jeep started to reveal its 2024 EVs including the all-new Recon and Wagoneer S. Chevrolet also took the wraps off the Equinox EV. The big only big reveal at the show itself was the reworked 2024 Ford Mustang that's coming next summer. The king of designing devices with fewer buttons, Jonny Ive said that cars should have more buttons and less touch. Ram is ending production of the diesel version of the 1500 pickup so order yours now.
