New platinum-based hydrogen fuel cell as cheap to make as conventional car engine

MiningWeekly.com Audio Articles

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 2, 2024 6:05

This audio is brought to you by Wearcheck, your condition monitoring specialist. The brand-new platinum-catalysed hydrogen fuel cell system that has just been released for passenger cars reveals that fuel cells can be as cheap to manufacture as internal combustion engines, UK company Intelligent Energy has highlighted in a release to Mining Weekly. The company's patented system has been designed to give passenger car manufacturers direct access to the smaller, more powerful, turnkey and commercially viable hydrogen fuel cell solution that is needed to make zero carbon emission mobility a reality in the passenger car market across the entire planet. The hydrogen fuel cell developer and manufacturer has also confirmed that its innovative IE-DRIVE is a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. PEM and platinum go hand-in-glove. The single stack platform burst into the open during a launch event at Intelligent Energy's Loughborough headquarters, where it powered a sports utility vehicle provided by Changan UK. The specification of the trade-marked platform is said by Intelligent Energy to bring "significant benefits" when compared with other fuel cells that have been developed by large automotive groups and their third party fuel cell suppliers. MORE POWER, SMALLER, SIMPLER In its current configuration, the fuel cell stack is capable of 157 kW gross electrical power, which is said to be higher than any other single stack application that is currently available for the passenger car sector. The patented direct water injection technology means that the system's heat exchanger is up to 30% smaller than its competitors at equal net power output. The single pass heat exchanger in the system's test sports utility vehicle measures only 0.34 m but enables cruising at 130 km/h in peak temperatures and a speed of 90 km/h to be achieved when travelling up a long, steep hill. Having a small heat exchanger makes vehicle packaging much easier and benefits fuel cell vehicle design, particularly in relation to bonnet height and improved driver visibility, Intelligent Energy stated. Designing its novel direct water injection system has allowed Intelligent Energy to reduce its component count and bill of materials. An example of this is shown by the fact the system's fuel cell does not require a humidifier and related parts. TURNKEY, COMMERCIALLY VIABLE The fuel cell system, which has a traditional engine shape, meets the low bonnet requirements of passenger cars while including the fuel cell stack, electronic control unit, heat exchanger and balance of plant. "It represents a genuine turnkey solution for car manufacturers," Intelligent Energy stated. Under full-scale, volume manufacturing conditions, the company predicts that its fuel cell system will cost around 100 GBP per kW by the end of the decade, making it less expensive than battery electric vehicle solutions and comparable with internal combustion engines. The quest to develop a new breed of patented hydrogen fuel cell technology is the result of a four-year project that got underway in November 2019, supported by the Advanced Propulsion Centre. The £22-million initiative was a collaborative effort involving Intelligent Energy, Changan Research & Development Centre, Lyra Electronics and Alexander Dennis. Changan provided essential support during the project, including the provision of three sports utility vehicles to enable fuel cell testing. Throughout the entire project, Intelligent Energy has revolutionised its manufacturing processes, streamlined assembly, and worked to secure new cost efficiencies without sacrificing quality. Intelligent Energy is now ready to roll its technology out to the passenger car market, in partnership with suitable car manufacturers. "With 25% of all passenger cars expected to have hydrogen fuel cell powertrains, this clean technology represents the future," said Intelligent Energy CE David Woolhouse. "Our product has the potential to shake up the hydroge...

Tu starts this podcast off with his thoughts on the latest reorg of Volkwagen Group's Cariad software group wondering why they installed another 'car' guy to run Cariad when Blume had a real opportunity to catalyze real change at the division. He then compares and contrasts that with the recent hire of Mike Abbot by GM to run their software team. After Tu's take, Lei spends a few minutes giving his counterpoint on Tu's thoughts.Lei transitions the conversation over to two product launches, one by BYD and the other by Wuling that caught his attention due to the price reductions both launched with. Lei briefly talks about Li Auto's product portfolio over the next few years and how its different then their competitors. The podcast closes out the podcast with Lei giving a brief history lesson on the Geely & Changan relationship and a bit of speculation on how they've moved past their differences and may work more closely together to help each other.

Jenny Liu is a schoolteacher in Zhumadian in central China. With about 7 million people, it's still considered a small city. When she's not working, her days are spent on the go, shuttling her kids around town.Liu drives a Seahorse, a Chinese brand mini-electric car.China started investing in new electric vehicles (EV) years ago. This year, about 25% of new cars sold there are electric.Liu told The World that she's usually driving around in her electric car from morning until night. One day, her first stop was dropping off her daughter at kindergarten. Next, she took her 12 year-old son to his tutoring session and picked up some groceries. In the afternoon, it was more pick-ups, drop-offs and errands.“Everyone here has an electric car,” she said. Liu's family actually owns three electric vehicles — the mini-electric car, an electric scooter and a three-wheeled golf cart. They're all for short trips within the city. They also own a gas-powered car, but Liu said they only use it for long-haul trips outside the city. Car buyers check out the Avatr 11 electric vehicle in China. Credit: Rebecca Kanthor/The World “It's just too expensive to drive,” she explained. The mini-EV costs her family less than $4 a week to charge up. Gas and parking would cost at least five times as much.Across Chinese cities, electric cars can be seen everywhere, and can be spotted by their green license plates. Tiny mini-EVs are especially popular in smaller cities. They're even smaller than the SmartCars seen on roads in the US. And these mini-EVs are customized with colors and decals — for example, some cars are decorated with Mickey Mouse, Hello Kitty or the black-and-white splotches of a dairy cow.Zhang Bo, 32, owns a shiny silver Wuling Hongguang, which was the best-selling EV in China, a Chinese joint venture with GM. He uses his car to commute to work. “It's really convenient for city driving,” he said. It's also budget-friendly. This model goes for under $5,000.Yang Jian, a journalist who writes about the car industry in China, said that government subsidies have been a big reason for the EV market's success, but he senses that it is now growing even stronger because buyers are interested in the cars themselves, not just the subsidies.“Now there is a real demand for EVs, especially among the young population.”Yang Jian is, journalist“Now there is a real demand for EVs, especially among the young population,” he said. “They really like the car, from the exterior to interior to [its] performance. They like to try new things.”And there are plenty of options to try, for every budget, from tiny, cheaper models all the way up to luxury cars made by Chinese and foreign automakers.  Bill Russo is a car industry expert in Shanghai. He said that the range of options is key to China's EV success.“If the Chinese EV market were an ice cream shop, it would be Baskin Robbins,” he said. “You know, 31 flavors. There's basic EVs, midmarket EVs, and then there's more premium [ones with] more technology. I call them smart EV offerings — even some high end brands, like the HiPhi — which is selling an EV that is more than $100,000.In the coastal city of Shanghai — a city of 25 million people — you can see the full range of electric vehicles on the roads, from electric scooters and electric buses, all the way to Teslas and other luxury cars. Hart Yang, 24, is a physical education teacher at an elementary school, and like many people in China from his generation, he's the first car owner in his family. He bought a black Tesla Model 3.“I chose an electric car mostly for the free license plate,” he said. In Shanghai, the cost of a license plate alone is more than $13,000, Yang explained. But electric and hybrid car buyers in Shanghai get a green license plate at no cost. That perk will be taken away from hybrid car buyers at the end of this year, but the Chinese government has signaled it will continue to support the EV car market into 2023.Tesla, which has a factory in Shanghai, is a popular EV car purchase in bigger cities. But Chinese brands are competitive, with names like Future and Build Your Dream. High-end Chinese EV makers are tapping into an aspirational market. It's a high-tech collaboration between Changan, one of China's biggest car companies, and Huawei, the mobile phone company. The car sells for nearly $50,000.Elliot Richards, who makes YouTube videos about Chinese electric cars, said that for top-end electric car buyers here, it's all about the technology.“Chinese consumers think that this is like a mobile phone purchase,” he said. “They just change it every six months into the new technology, like an iPhone. Let's drive this for six months, enjoy it, sell it. Get the new model from another company.”The model he's driving doesn't require a key. You use your phone to unlock the doors. The car is full of perks: three large screens on the dashboard and the backseats even feature back massagers. Cameras and sensors are positioned throughout the car. YouTuber Elliot Richards test drives a Chinese luxury electric vehicle. Credit: Rebecca Kanthor/The World When the onboard computer senses its passengers are in a happy mood, an automated woman's voice offers to put on some upbeat music and lighting inside the car. These high-tech features will eventually be standard in most Chinese EVs, Richards said.Electric cars in China benefit from a strong infrastructure that supports the industry. In Shanghai, there are 109,000 public charging stations.   “There are so many,” Richards said. “And if I go further outside of Shanghai, I know the motorway network, every service station has chargers. It's so easy that I didn't even consider it a problem in China.”But others find it more difficult to drive electric cars on long-haul trips. Hart Yang, the Tesla owner, said he ran out of power for his car on a trip into the mountains several hours away from Shanghai. The remote rural area he traveled to was not well equipped with charging stations, so he had to come up with an alternate solution.Outside of China's wealthier coastal cities, though, many people still rely on China's extensive rail network or gas-powered cars for longer trips. The Chinese government has announced that it is investing in new charging stations for rural areas across the country, in the hopes that a stronger charging infrastructure will pave the way for Chinese drivers to go all in on electric.

The roll-out is to begin soon." reports electrive: "Stellantis and the F-Charging estimate to begin building the network this year, starting in Italy. Then the network will expand to “the whole of Europe,” the partners announced without going into detail. F Charging and Stallentis said they have already identified over 1,000 owners or operators of locations across Europe that are likely candidates for cooperation. Stellantis does not disclose more information on the schedule and exact locations. Samsung SDI's deal came a day after its domestic rival, LG Energy Solution Ltd., announced the signing of a similar contract with the same carmaker in what analysts predict to be an about 4 trillion-won (US$3.4 billion) investment. Samsung SDI and Stellantis also recently signed a memorandum of understanding on the joint venture to build a battery production plant in the United States, according to the sources. The exact proportion has not yet been decided, with the Department for Transport intending to hold a consultation on the matter, but the aim is to “improve consumer choice” and help deliver on the commitment to end the sale of new conventional petrol and diesel cars by 2030 and hybrid sales by 2035." writes AutoExpress: "The announcement comes as part of the publication of the Government's net-zero strategy, which also includes £620million of additional funding for the plug-in car grant and EV charging infrastructure, particularly the on-street residential chargepoint scheme. A further £350 million will be allocated for supporting the UK automotive sector in electrifying its vehicles and supply chains." https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/356346/electric-car-mandate-announced-car-manufacturers REBORN BMW 3 SERIES TO USHER IN NEW ELECTRIC ERA "BMW will kick-start the third phase of its electrification strategy in 2025 with an all-new executive saloon that will serve as the vanguard for a reinvented line-up based on a new EV architecture." says Autocar: "It will feature Munich's sixth-generation electric powertrain, long-range battery technology, rapid-charging capability, lightweight construction, a fully customisable digital operating system and a new mix of sustainable construction materials. Set to be sold alongside other new battery-electric and combustion-engined saloons, the new model, known under the internal working title NK1, will be the first car based on the Neue Klasse EV platform, paving the way for a whole new generation of EVs, including an extended line-up of SUVs." VOLVO'S RANGE ASSISTANT WILL TEACH YOU TO EKE OUT EV MILES "Volvo is trialling a beta version of its new Range Assistant app, designed to help drivers of its XC40 Recharge and forthcoming C40 Recharge squeeze out as many miles from a charge as possible. The app is coming to the electric SUV by way of an over-the-air update before the end of October, while its crossover sibling will have it pre-installed when production officially gets underway." according to topgear.com: "The Range Assistant promises drivers ‘a clear and accurate' range estimate based on real-time energy consumption, automatically adjusting the climate control to conserve juice when it's needed most. It also provides a breakdown on how energy is being used inside the car, and suggests ways drivers can adapt their driving style to be as efficient as possible. Both companies last year set an ambitious target of 100 percent EVs by decade's end. Now they say the unprecedented EV tax credits, rebates and charging infrastructure funding that's included in the contentious $3.5 trillion reconciliation package could help flip their fleets." says eeNews.net: " As it stands, the measure includes an expansive clean energy tax bill that would increase EV credits. If passed, it could cut the price of some battery-powered cars by as much as a third — boosting EV competitiveness and, in some cases, making them cheaper than combustion-engine automobiles.  The high price of EVs and a dearth of charging options in urban areas are considered by both Uber and Lyft two of the primary obstacles." https://www.eenews.net/articles/uber-lyft-lobby-for-ev-reconciliation-provisions/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM When buying a used electric car, how do you feel about servicing? 感谢热心听众【绿云扰-王佳云】对本文稿的贡献。Heyang: You are listening to Round Table. They pick you up for an early flight. They give you a ride home after late-night out work. The headlights of their cars warm up your heart on a windy night, and that ambiguous smell inside sends you straight to vomit hell. Let’s talk about Chinese cab drivers. This is inspired by WeChat account “Shameless”. They’ve got some good stuff there. But yeah, guys tell me more about your experience of all those years riding Chinese cabs.Ryan: Yeah, so I mean this “shameless” account breaks it down into five different categories of cab drivers. And I got to say that I definitely have a lot of stories considering this one kind of cab driver, The Raging Racer. And these guys drive fast. They are almost drifting in around corners and stops. No, I’ve never had that kind of experience. But I definitely have had cab drivers that are very aggressive drivers. And you know what? I liked it. I got to say I am a big fan of the raging racers. I remember one time I used to work on a Beijinghour we did a morning show so I’d wake up very early in the morning to get to the studio in babaoshan. (Heyang: How early was it?) Guys, I had to get up at 2:30 am, OK? (Heyang: 两点半 in the morning.) Yeah, and I live near Gulou so there is always taxi cabs there. But anyways I got one and this guy drove so fast and I ended up getting to work in the split nick of time and I was able to have a relaxing siesta on the couch before starting my shift even though at times I was a little nervous. But…..Luo Yu: Is it a bit scary for the driver to drive all the way from downtown Beijing to Babaoshan at 2:30 in the morning?Heyang: What’s scary about that? Luo Yu, let’s just let that out. Let’s just let it out. Why is it scary?Luo Yu: Because we’ve got the best cemetery here in Beijing.Heyang: Yeah, the cemetery, yeah, the graveyards.Ryan: I’ve definitely had like also what they called a road robber who wants to take you on the trip through all different areas of Beijing. So in these many mornings that I have commuted to babaoshan I have gone through many different routes. My favorite route though was of course going through the Forbidden City and Tiananmen. There was an amazing view. (Luo Yu: Is that going through?) (Heyang: Changan Avenue.) Changan Avenue, driving you through Changan Avenue is beautiful at night and I highly recommend it. But there also take like a bigillion other different ways. So apparently there is like a bigillion ways to get to babaoshan from where I live. But my favorite is Changan.Heyang: 长安街,yeah, Changan Avenue. OK, and I think talking about road robbers our listeners have something to say. PX says that there was once that you know she came back she wants to go into the city from the airport and every time the cab driver is being really really annoying and they just want to get the most money out of a trip from the airport to ……. OK, Luo YuLuo Yu: Tell me more about it. I used to live very close to Beijing Capital International Airport. You know it’s not walkable distance so I have to take a cab but I felt humiliated millions of times. Every time when I was hailing the cab and I said to the driver, “Sorry, I’m so sorry, shifu. I live nearby. I’ll give you…… ” Well, the fee is only fifteen kuai, starting fee, but I have to give him an extra twenty kuai. And he said, “Do you think twenty kuai compensation is enough?” So they don’t consider you as the valuable passenger. They just turn you down on most occasions. That’s happening a lot in a lot of cities in China.Ryan: Yeah, you know so we’ve talked about the road robber, we’ve talked about the raging racer, but there is also one that is called The Zero Sense of Direction. I’ve definitely had my fresh year though the other…… (Heyang: No way! A taxi driver should know the way, right?) The other night I was with a friend and I was coming back to my place from near like shuangjin. Anyways, I was trying to tell the cab driver, hey, like it’s north, it’s north, but for some reason he kept saying beixinqiao wherever was a complete different direction. We got very mixed up so I feel like even maybe I have the zero sense of direction. But I thought I was like spot on about where we needed to go.Heyang: Yeah, apparently the situation has only gotten worse as Uber and Didi are you know…Luo Yu: But they’ve got GIS and GPS inside the car.Heyang: Yeah, and I wonder if it’s OK. Well for me I think it’s fine if a taxi driver doesn’t know the way then just turn on the GPS. But that has changed. In the old days in Beijing when I was a little girl that was a long time ago I’d to admit. OK, I’m not that old anyway. Stop laughing at me! If you are laughing with you are forgiven. OK, alright, so bad thing it was….. I love non-local people as well alright? But back then it was all old local Beijinger taxi drivers and they would talk about as if they’ve just had dinner with Jiang Zemin or Hu Jintao the night before rubbing shoulders with them. And also they know the road and they know every shortcut through every alleyway. They can be the raging racer, too. But they know the way and that is the most important thing which I do find these days becomes increasingly a luxury that a lot of these non-local taxi drivers they just don’t know where to go.Luo Yu: They can’t even speak mandarin as they are from outside Beijing so their Putonghua is not that good.Heyang: OK, not as standardized but you know you can pretty much understand but they don’t know the way and that the most annoying thing for me. OK, most annoying thing for you.Ryan: Sometimes the music. Sometimes the music I heard some great music in cabs and I heard some music that I was very confused about. But you know I’ve noticed that there is a quite different array of music. (Luo Yu: Like 凤凰传奇, the legend of phoenix.) There are different array of music being listened to in taxi cabs which is another criterion for one of the kinds of taxi cab drivers.Heyang: Yes, definitely. And I like to finish off today’s show with Bob’ comment. He says he just scolded a taxi driver because that dude was eating instant noodles, cup instant noodles, and just threw the garbage out of the window and that’s not some behavior he can condone and I totally understand that.
