Maz shares his sister's journey when diagnosed with breast cancer at a very young age. He opens up with details on challenges of being one of her caregivers and how he balanced comedy with tragedy. Something a little outside of the normal scope of Countermelody for today's episode: Earlier this year I published a bonus episode on the fascinating singer/songwriter Benard Ighner (1945-2017) and his modern-day standard “Everything Must Change,” which I re-present today. The song has had a profound effect on me ever since I heard the version by the great Oleta Adams on her 1990 solo debut album, Circle of One. At the time I assumed that Oleta herself had written it, but I came to discover that it was penned by Ighner and first recorded by Quincy Jones on his 1974 album, Body Heat, and that since then many, many pop and jazz singers of the past fifty years have covered the song. All these different versions have both delighted and fascinated (as well as occasionally mystified and frustrated) me. The song itself is both fatalistic and hopeful, which is exactly the place I find myself as Election Day in the US approaches. Intrigued by both the song and its composer, I dug deeper and discovered all I could about Benard Ighner. An autodidactic musical polymath, Ighner rubbed shoulders with some of the greatest pop and jazz musicians of his time, and not just the hundreds of singers and instrumentalists who have jumped on the “Everything Must Change” bandwagon! This song brings out either the very best or the very worst of those who interpret it. In choosing my favorite versions, I have veered toward those who embrace understatement rather than vocal caterwauling and children's choruses. The episode begins with examples of Ighner's early work from the late sixties and early seventies, including pseudonymous encounters with Dizzy Gillespie (as Benard Ito) and Lalo Schifrin (as Alexander Saint Charles); proceeding through songs he wrote and produced for Shirley Bassey, Marlena Shaw, and Carmen McRae; as well as two excerpts from his solo album, a one-off 1978 Japanese release entitled Little Dreamer. We then hear ten different versions of the song, including, among others, Nina Simone, June Christy, Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan, Minako Yoshida (sung to her own Japanese translation), a recent magisterial live performance by Oleta Adams, and, even Ighner himself, who, alongside his other many musical talents, possessed a velvety baritone voice of exceptional beauty, poise, and power. May this episode provide hope, courage, and insight for all of those who do believe that we can overcome the mad popularity-contest antics of this election cycle and lean toward a future in which morality and hope can still prove to be guiding principles. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The 2022 federal election turned out to be one of the interesting and exciting results in Australian history. Not that you'd get an understanding of this while watching any of the mainstream media coverage on election night: their presentation and analysis of the result was as abysmal as their campaign coverage and, as soon as it became obvious their favoured political team was not going to win – far from it – it was time to start picking holes at Labor and what went wrong for Anthony Albanese. Even though Labor was the victor and Albanese had become Australia's 31st Prime Minister.Early on in the evening, it appeared Scott Morrison might be on track for a repeat of his 2019 victory, but as the night moved on, the Coalition was nowhere within reach of government, or even being able to cobble up an arrangement with the expanded crossbench to reach that magical number of 76 seats. This is the largest ever crossbench ever in federal politics and while it might not be a strong endorsement of the new Labor government, it's an excellent result for progressive politics: a government that is prepared to make progress on Indigenous recognition, end the climate change wars, create an anti-corruption commission, clean up politics, improve women's safety; and a mainly progressive crossbench that will create a buffer between this Labor government and the Coalition opposition.Already, the Coalition is reaching for a continuation of link with the Howard government through the likely appointment of Peter Dutton as the leader of the Liberal Party – therefore, becoming the leader of the opposition – when the electorate had just voted for a break from this style of conservative government and towards a new style of politics that works in the interests of people, and not against them. This election result is a clear demarcation point between the divisive and destructive politics of the Liberal–National government over the past nine years. Everything must change, and the electorate has voted for change.
Our second iteration of our podcast on The Story of Quincy Jones delves into a fruitful, transitional and creative period in Jones' career, in which both his sound and the landscape of Black music at large were transforming and evolving deeply. This episode will cover the story of 1969's Walking in Space and 1974's heavily sampled Body Heat, both serving as an entryway into exploring Quincy's A&M Years and the journey and shifts that led to his first near-platinum album. Bill Myers Inspires Over the past year, we all have experienced great change. Change has happened at every turn from our political leadership to our racial awareness, to life on lockdown in quarantine during a global pandemic, to loved ones and friends who are no longer with us today. While this all may seem unusual, it is actually normal that change happens, continuously and constantly in ways we perhaps do not take notice of, but impermanence and constant change is both natural and normal. The biggest challenge we face is not getting stuck. After obtaining a B.A. in Philosophy from Marian University, Brandt Ryan earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Florida International University in 2001. While living in New York he served as an editorial assistant for Zoetrope: All-Story, Francis Ford Coppola's internationally acclaimed fiction and art magazine. Choosing to take a different path in life can take years and happens in stages. But there is one stage that is always present before you succeed. One joy of doing my work is the relationships I have with thousands of people - many on a one-on-one basis. In most cases, these folks have decided to move away from their old life. They are heading off in a new direction, and most have begun their journey. And that's when things get complicated. Their decision to change is usually the result of repeating behavior that continues to deliver unwanted results. Eventually, they reach a point where there is no choice but to consider something different. That's what happens when you wear yourself out, get your ego out of the way, and decide to get moving. It's an exciting time, filled with dreams, ideas, and energy. But it can also be a time of confusion. As you seek to find the combination of thoughts and actions that will create your success, building a roadmap is your top priority. And that takes patience. One day, you realize that you haven't achieved your goal. Nobody has given you the answer you seek, no matter how well-meaning. Frustration sets in. You almost give up. You find yourself mad as hell and not wanting to take it anymore - and magic happens. When you understand that the only person who can answer your dreams is you, your dreams will become real. Your energy will serge. You will find yourself with all the motivation you need to create the life that you have been wanting all these years. You will break free of whatever is holding you back. You decide you can't go back, you won't hold back, and your time has arrived. What happens next? Since the journey is not the destination, you begin to embrace every step you take along the way. You start getting what you want today and even more tomorrow. It never stops. Frustration is your friend. Stand up. Take a step. Repeat. Keep moving until you create the life of your dreams.
With this episode, we're starting our study of the period after the Second Vatican Council. Over the next twenty or so episodes, we'll be diving into topics like the Novus Ordo Mass, Religious Liberty, Collegiality, the Hermeneutic of Continuity, Feenyism, Obedience and its Limits, Sedevacantism, Ecumenism, Infallibility, the new Canonizations, Supplied Jurisdiction, and much more. But today, we'll start with the reforms that started to take place just after the Second Vatican Council. Father John-Mark McFarland will take us through the immediate aftermath of the council, and show us how the Council, and the “Spirit of Vatican II” meant an immediate overhaul, and deformation of everything in the Church.

The Dumpster Fire of 2020 is over, but the song remains the same: capitalism, white supremacy and patriarchy rage on in a celebrity-fueled clusterfuck of mass death and ecological collapse. And so it begins: A new calendar unfurls like a blanket to smother or console our traumatized lives. The New Year is a time when Christmas decorations get wanly huffed into garage boxes and when people busy themselves by hatching plans for privatized notions of change; some post their resolutions publicly on social media, while others whisper theirs sheepishly to friends and lovers, almost all of which get thwarted by the exhaustion, depression, and despair of life in this capitalist inferno. But what if real change in our personal lives is contingent upon the collective emancipation of all of us? Let's face it: each and every year comes with the same urgent imperative: everything must change. But yet, too much is expected to come from within ourselves for ourselves. And our relationship with time is too passive. Upon any year that passes, we too often say that this 12-month cycle did us wrong, did a bad thing, crushed our diaphanous dreams to shards of amber. But what if a year was just a random collection of days, and “2021” is only worthy of its name if it inspires us to abolish what's unjust and hurts us all? This year, unlike past furtive ones, we must work collectively toward a global socialist revolution against the dark, driving engine of capitalism, which forever churns out newer hierarchies to grind against older, more ancient ones. We must start anew with a struggle that confronts the onslaught of climate chaos propelled by a capitalist death-cult. So to burst forth in this New Year, The Future Is A Mixtape humbly offers our version of a double-album. In this episode, Jesse will be flying solo by reading To Change Everything: An Anarchist Appeal from CrimethInc, an ex-worker collective that surfaced out of Olympia, Washington, more than two decades ago. Immediately following the reading, the next episode contains Matt & Jesse's conversation about this eminently accessible anarchist manifesto. This international network of anonymous, aspiring revolutionaries declares that we should be free to direct our limitless potential on our own terms, and that no government, market, ideology or sky-daddy should be able to tell us what our lives must be; and that, finally, the world should be arranged by self-determination and mutual aid, just as water from a lake is best collected from two hands rather than one. In this, the second part of our double-album release, we return to our familiar conversational format to discuss the ideas and diagnoses put forth in CrimthInc's poetic manifesto, To Change Everything. The 48-page pamphlet documents a dizzying array of morbid disorders from the same sick nation-states that give you endless awful B-sides, such as: “Disney's Manifest Destiny,” “Healthcare, Sometimes,” “Bootstraps Best for You,” “Lock'em & Cock'em,” “Student Debt Meets Mr. Ramen,” and finally, “Do the COVID-Collapse.” Many of the threatening obstacles and dangerous injustices diagrammed in CrimethInc's proclamation adhere, like super-glue, to the plastic surface of the U.S. petroleum project. And so, the collective's polemic is always aware that the solutions required must be bigger than one state, one nation or one continent to contemplate, fathom or undertake. The manifesto stirs with telling details and insightful observations about what we know and what we wish to ignore in this, our shared reality that spins like a deranged compass. And while To Change Everything functions as a good primer to anarchist ethics and its attendant traditions, it's worth noting how little it offers in the way of clear, practical, and focused solutions—like The Golden Square—or what Jesse & Matt like to call the “No-Bullshit Blueprint for Socialism” explored in Episode #031. The promise of anarchism is not some grand plan, or some self-righteous political dogma that will magically release us from capitalism's death-grip, but its values demand us to make a clear paradigm shift away from the dizzying maze of domination and violence that perpetually blocks humanity from having any nice things. Anarchism points towards a deep-system critique and an egalitarian ethics of rights and responsibilities that we so desperately need in our institutions and social relations. By flipping the script on a world built on a logic of forced scarcity and do-or-die competition, we can instead design a world of mutual cooperation and shared abundance. As CrimethInc writes, “Every order is founded on a crime against the preceding order—the crime that dissolved it.” But we can't commit that righteous crime with a fetishization of poetic ambiguities; we must work in solidarity to build dual power—abolishing institutions of state violence while we build new institutions of care & freedom at every level. Above all else, if we are going to survive together on this fragile planet, we must decommodify life and democratize society. And to do it now, we must start by changing everything.
