Hosted by editor and journalist Michael Schneider, it delves deep into the rapidly evolving film industry. In this episode, we bring together a diverse group of industry experts for a dynamic conversation about the ever-evolving world of TV series. We delve into what makes a series truly international—what allows a show to break through cultural and language barriers and resonate with audiences worldwide? Is it the warmth of relatable characters that audiences are seeking during challenging times, or is it the exploration of social-political issues and dystopian themes that capture our collective attention? Ultimately, the answer lies in universally compelling stories that speak to viewers beyond the confines of a single market. While it may be a tougher feat for comedy, there's a clear call for future series to transcend these boundaries and reach a global audience. In this discussion, Anna Rohde, Steve Matthews, Maria Cervera, and Paul Telegdy offer their unique perspectives on the international series market, providing predictions on where global audiences are headed next. They also explore the current trends shaping the industry, including the impact of financial shifts. Tune in to hear the experts tackle the future of series content and its journey across the globe. The Berlinale Series Market is the EFM's boutique market for serial content from all over the world. From February 16 to 19, industry experts, creatives, buyers and distributors will meet again at CinemaxX at Potsdamer Platz and Gropius Bau. Steve Matthews is the Head of Scripted, Creative, at Banijay Entertainment, where he plays a pivotal role in the group's production development process, leading on creative initiatives for original drama projects. Before joining Banijay Entertainment, Matthews was VP and Executive Producer, Scripted, at HBO Europe, having joined the business back in 2014. In that post, he partnered with local teams across Central Europe, Spain and Nordics, to spearhead the development of original series, miniseries, and international adaptations. His portfolio included Pustina, Umbre, Blinded By The Lights, Uspjeh, The Sleepers, Foodie Love, Gösta; and from Banijay Entertainment's footprint specifically, 30 Coins (Pokeepsie), Beforeigners (Rubicon), and Beartown (Filmlance). Additionally, Matthews is dedicated to mentoring talent, and set up Banijay Bootcamp, a specific programme for scripted creatives. Before joining Germany's distribution and production house Beta Film GmbH as International Creative Executive & Content Editor, Anna Rohde studied dramaturgy, philosophy, and literature at Munich's Theatre Academy and at Ludwig Maximilian University Munich. Before her studies, she worked as assistant director in many national and international TV and feature films. She is member of Germany's VeDRA (Verband für Film- und Fernsehdramaturgie e.V.), jury member of e.g. the International Emmy's semi-finals, the Council of Europe Eurimages development award and – among others - mentor of SFF's (Sarajevo Film Festival) CineLink workshop, the post-graduate Serial Eyes writing program. As content editor, she has been working on many internationally successful shows from the CEE region, most recently on the multi-awarded THE SILENCE (2021-2023) and GOLDEN BOY (2021), Jasmila Zbanic's Venice premiered I KNOW YOUR SOUL (2023), and the Canneseries-awarded OPERATION SABRE (2024). Maria Cervera is Head of Content for Cattleya Producciones, part of ITV Studios in Spain. During her 20 year+ professional path she has focused on series development and production for local and international markets, with previous roles at Paramount's International TV Studio as Head of Content for EMEAA and within the Netflix International team. She also teaches at several writing programs including Berlin's Serial Eyes and Spain's screenwriters' guild-sponsored master. Paul worked at NBCUniversal for 12 years, becoming Chairman of NBC in 2019, before that the BBC for ten years. Greg Davies stars as the all-powerful “Taskmaster” who, with the help of his loyal assistant Horne, sets out to test the wiles, wit, and wisdom of five comedians through a series of strange and surreal challenges in what is the most hard-fought and ridiculous comedy entertainment format on TV.   So far, 170 episodes have been produced in the UK as part of a landmark six-season deal with Channel 4 in 2020. The broadcaster recently renewed the agreement for six more series following nine record-breaking series on UKTV's Dave.   Taskmaster has triumphed as one of Channel 4's most popular programs in recent years, coming in as the channel's third most streamed title of 2023 with 2.3 billion viewing minutes recorded across all series watched in the year. The launch episode of the latest series [S17] averaged an audience of 3.2m, with 40% of viewing coming from streaming [0-28 days, all platforms].Watched by a broad multi-generational audience, Taskmaster was Channel 4's youngest skewing series last year, and in terms of audience share of young viewers (16-34) across last year's series on the channel, it was second only to Gogglebox in the coveted 9 pm slot.   Taskmaster was recently crowned Best Comedy Entertainment at the Rose d'Or Awards 2024 and has previously won Best Comedy Entertainment Show at the National Comedy Awards 2022 and 2023, Best Comedy Entertainment at the BAFTAs 2020, and Best Entertainment Programme at the Broadcast Awards 2018, having previously received two more nominations for the Broadcast Awards and recently picking up its fourth BAFTA nomination for the 2023 ceremony. It has also been nominated for the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award at the NTA's 2021 and 2022, Best Comedy Entertainment at Rose d'Or 2023, Studio Entertainment at Rose d'Or 2021, Best Entertainment Programme at the RTS Awards, Broadcasting Press Guild Awards, the Broadcast Digital Awards, Edinburgh TV Award, the TV Choice Awards, and Best Returning Format in the International Format Awards 2020.   The original Taskmaster program can now be seen in 120 countries. Over 92 seasons and 921 episodes have been commissioned outside the UK, with local versions now in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Croatia, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, and Portugal, where it ranked first for most-watched entertainment programs on its channel RTP 1.  The Taskmaster YouTube channel has been hugely successful internationally, reaching over 10.9 billion impressions since its first launch in October 2019. It has just over 870 million views and over 1.6 million subscribers, of which over a third are from North America. The channel has had over 196 million hours of content viewed, with 56% of those hours from North America (108 million hours watched). The show has grown significantly in popularity with American audiences, and over the last year, there have been 123 million views.   On this special edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Greg Davies and Alex Horne spoke about Taskmaster's tenth anniversary on television, previewed the Series 19 opener, and why they brought the series to the United States.Let's connect on social media: A) BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/jacobelyachar.bsky.socialB) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JacobElyachar/C) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jacobelyachar/D) Threads: https://www.threads.net/@jacobelyacharE) Twitter (X): https://x.com/JacobElyacharF) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@JacobElyacharBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.

We first fell in love with him as Tim in The Office in 2001; he gained cult status as Dr Watson in Sherlock in 2010; and then hit the big time as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit in 2012. Martin won a Bafta and an Emmy for Sherlock and last year scooped an International Emmy for his portrayal of Chris Carson in The Responder. While on the road to healing, Tony tried his hand at stand-up comedy and, encouraged by his wife, decided to pursue his dream of becoming an author. Academy of Ideas
The politics of hate: is everyone a bigot but me?

Academy of Ideas

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 2, 2024 81:17

Recorded at the Battle of Ideas festival 2023 on Saturday 28 October at Church House, London. ORIGINAL INTRODUCTION The self-image of Western societies as cosmopolitan, liberal and tolerant has collapsed of late, with a darker view taking hold of people as extreme, hate-filled and hurtful. For example, in the wake of the Hamas attacks on Israel, anti-Semitism – ‘the oldest hatred' – has come forcefully into public view. Accordingly, controlling ‘hate speech' has become a major focus for critics and campaigners, as well as legislators and regulators. They proceed in the belief that, as one Guardian commentator put it: ‘Words of hate create an ethos of hate, an atmosphere of hate, a political, social Petri dish of hate. Eventually, spoken words become deeds.' Campaigners say escalating incidences of hate justify interventions. The most recent published date show 155,841 offences recorded in the year to March – up 26 per cent from the previous year – with hate crimes against transgender people seeing the biggest increase, jumping by 56 per cent since last year. Meanwhile, in the past five years, the number of recorded non-crime hate incidents (NCHI) has grown to 120,000. Critics say the nebulous definition and subjective interpretation of hate, which is largely in the eye of the victim or reporter, is trivialising such ‘crimes'. But is there more to this issue than definitional disarray? Some say the problem is being inflated by ‘fishing' exercises. The Citizen's Advice Bureau, for example, says ‘it is always best' to ‘act early' and report incidents even if ‘unsure whether the incident is a criminal offence… or serious enough to be reported'. Meanwhile, Police Scotland has promised to set up a new unit to tackle ‘hate crimes' such as misgendering and denying men access to ladies' toilets. Some say that what is labelled ‘hate speech' is increasingly being weaponised to silence opponents and narrow viewpoint diversity. Groups such as Stop Funding Hate aim to persuade advertisers to pull support from broadcasters and publications on the grounds that views aired spread hate and division. More broadly, fuelled by identity politics, competing groups too often accuse other identities of hate and bigotry – demonising those we disagree with is a tactic used across the political spectrum. On one side, people are labeled hateful TERFs, gammon, alt-right or xenophobic, while the other side are hate-driven snowflakes, misogynists, Remoaners, pinko commies and cry-bullies. What are the prospects of making political exchange less toxic and productive, if labelling those we disagree with as hate-mongers continues to escalate? How should defenders of freedom best make the case for free speech over hate speech? How should we understand what counts as hate speech, and how do we account for its rise to become central to how Western societies are organising their legal systems and public life? Leon recounts various milestones in the show's history, from how it was developed with Action For Aids and gayhealth.sg to raise HIV and Aids awareness, to Season 3's recent premiere and inclusion of a trans character. Leon tells us why it is important that his characters are anything but saints, and why the show does not censor itself for people who are NOT like us. While discussing the series, Josh confronts his struggle with bodyshaming, while Sam Jo and Leon commiserate on having to hide aspects of their queer lives from their family. We also learn that aside from that Kelly Clarkson song, People Like Us is both slang for "homosexual" and the name of an advocacy group for LGBT equality.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Selling to multiple customer personas is tricky. Can your marketing appeal to all of them at once? You probably think, “Well, each persona has different pain points and things they care about.” But once you start thinking about all of the personas as just being people, you realize that they do care about the same things. Success at work, their family, and their quality of life, to name a few. So when you can appeal to the things your prospects care about most, you unlock the secret to creating an emotional bond with your audience that will place you above your competitors. To explore this idea, we're watching the hit animated series that The Guardian called, "arguably the best television series in the world," Bluey. It appeals to parents just as well as kids. And is a great example of how to market to multiple customer personas. Here with us is content master Nate Bagley to help discuss evoking strong emotions in your marketing, captivating your audience with relatable stories, and how to build trust to propel sales. Now it's time to tap into that inner child for this episode of Remarkable.About our guest, Nate BagleyNate Bagley is a content leader who has served in media and marketing roles at companies like Clozd, OrangeSoda, Mindshare Technologies, Romacorp, and Bold Academy. He founded relationship coaching company Growth Marriage in 2017, co-founded “date-in-a-box” subscription service Unbox Love in 2014, and started a podcast called Loveumentary in 2012.About BlueyBluey is an Australian animated tv series about the daily life of a blue heeler cattle puppy and her friends and family. As blue heelers are known as super energetic dogs, Bluey is always turning things into an adventure and using her imagination to do it.It premiered in 2018 and is currently on its third season, and was created by Joe Brumm. It stars the voices of David McCormack as the dad and Melanie Zanetti as the mom. Bluey, Bingo, and some of their friends aren't credited because they're voiced by children of the TV production crew, and it's to protect their identities. It's the #1 Australian children's TV show, Nominated for the 2023 Logie Award for Most Outstanding Children's Program. 2022 AACTA Award winner for Best Children's Program. 2019 International Emmy winner for Kids: Preschool. The Guardian has called it "arguably the best television series in the world".What B2B Companies Can Learn From Bluey:Tap into emotion. Think of your audience as human, and appeal to their very human needs, wants and desires. It could be that your product saves them time to go enjoy more family time, time outside, or time doing literally anything other than working. Appeal to that. Nate says, “”In marketing, emotion is the number one tool that we have to use. I think especially in B2B marketing, it's probably the most underutilized tool, is trying to elicit some sort of emotion in the content that you create.” And Bluey does this by exploring real life situations like a boy who has ADHD and struggles with sitting still in school all day, or Bluey's dad making a mistake and feeling inadequate as a father. B2B marketing isn't for robots; use emotion and see engagement hit the ceiling.Make it quick. Boil your story down to create maximum impact in a short amount of time. Bluey episodes are a few minutes at most. Which makes them insanely digestible, and they still draw tears from parents watching with their kids. Of course, this masterful storytelling isn't easy to do. Nate says, “How can you tell the most compelling story that evokes the most emotion in the most efficient way possible? And that requires a lot of work.  I don't think most people are willing to do that work. I think it's much easier to write out a list of features on your website and say, ‘This is how we can help you.' But the alternative is more powerful.” Spending time to craft a campaign that tells your story efficiently and with emotion pays off.Show that you understand your audience to earn their trust. Research your target buyer to figure out what they care about. Then leverage that in your marketing as a powerful trust-building tool. Nate says, “If you can describe the problem, the life, the struggles that your buyers are facing better than they can describe it themselves, they will automatically assume that you have the best solution. Having that empathy and understanding, and being able to communicate that back to them through your marketing messaging is going to accelerate the buying process and help you win business faster than anything else that you can do.” It's like how parents have learned to trust Bluey to thoughtfully explore real life topics in a compassionate way that children will understand. So when kids want to watch something, Bluey is not just a safe option, but an educational one as well. Bluey then becomes an easy go-to. Just like your product will be.Quotes*”Accounting, a great example. Accounting might be boring,  but accountants are not, because accountants are people. And people are not boring if you ask them the right questions. If you're trying to sell accounting, then you're going to fail. But if you're trying to solve a problem for accountants and you do a really good job understanding them, understanding what they're struggling with and what they want out of life, and you have empathy for their situation as an accountant, then you can find some really compelling stories to tell. But it's curiosity about the people that creates the good story. It's not what the people do. It's not the activity that's interesting in and of itself.” - Nate Bagley*”Focus. Focus more of your time and energy on learning how to tell good stories, and learning how to tell good stories in a really powerful way that evokes emotion and makes people feel understood and seen. And they'll trust that you have exactly what they need to take away the pain or increase the rate of success around what they're doing on a day to day basis.” - Nate BagleyTime Stamps[0:50] Introducing Content Leader Nate Bagley[1:22] What makes Bluey impactful?[3:33] What's Bluey about?[7:45] Why is Bluey Remarkable?[10:54] What B2B Marketing lessons can we take from Bluey?[20:06] How does Bluey use emotion?[26:03] How can we applying Bluey's storytelling techniques in marketing?LinksWatch BlueyConnect with Nate on LinkedInAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Goran Stolevski is our latest guest, and the award-winning Macedonian-born and Australian-raised writer/director's latest masterpiece, Of an Age, is all I've been talking about since I watched it.Of an Age is a beautiful and moving film about an unexpected and intense twenty-four-hour romance between an eighteen-year-old Serbian ballroom dancer and his best friend's older brother. A decade later the pair meet for a bittersweet reunion.Directed with an abundance of love and care by Stolevski, this film was incredibly tender and honest, and the cinematography was as stunning as its performances. What a beautiful story!Stolevski came to prominence with short films including Would You Look at Her, winner of the Best International Short at Sundance 2018. Collectively his shorts played over 200 festivals worldwide including Clermont-Ferrand, Palm Springs, Melbourne and Raindance. He also directed three episodes of the fourth season of International-Emmy-winning series Nowhere Boys.Goran's feature debut You Won't Be Alone is steeped in Macedonian folklore with a genre twist. Produced by Kristina Ceyton and Samantha Jennings at Causeway Films, with Focus Features handling worldwide distribution, You Won't be Alone premiered in competition for the Grand Jury prize at 2022 Sundance Film Festival, receiving rave reviews from critics. The film stars Noomi Rapace, Carloto Cotta, Anamaria Marinca and Alice Englert.Of an Age:Written and Directed and Edited by: Goran StolevskiProduced by: Kristina Ceyton and Sam JenningsStarring: Elia Anton, Thom Green, Hattie HookOf an Age Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtfkhimcnLYOfficial Website for Of an Age: https://www.focusfeatures.com/of-an-age/THE SMITH SOCIETY is a podcast featuring storytellers. Was there a role that you really wanted but didn't get? How did you feel about that experience?  It's ok to have a good cry about it! Actor/Coach/Creative Lucy Russell enlightens us in this week's episode that when we lose a role that we really want, it's the same as losing a person; our hearts do not know the difference. Let's be kinder to ourselves and allow these feelings to come up in a wave and get them out of our body.  You are not alone in going through these seasons of rejection; what's meant for you will come to you. In this episode: Lucy's journey in being her own compassionate critic when watching her performance. The biggest and most beautiful thing about films is that any story can touch people in really unexpected ways. How the uncertainty brought by the pandemic lead us to crave for stories with predictable endings. Lucy's plan of developing the incredible stories created by actors who didn't think they could write. Share This Episode >>  www.thisischelseajohnson.com/224 A little about Lucy: Lucy Russell started acting in her late twenties, having tried too many other jobs to count and having got a degree in Italian and Business at UCL in London. Her first feature was also Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas's first film, Following. After a couple of years of drama school, she played the title role in Eric Rohmer's French language film The Lady and the Duke, (which had the most insanely beautiful hand-sewn costumes designed by Pierre-Jean Larroque). She played Missy LeHand in CineNord's Atlantic Crossing, which won the 2021 International Emmy for TV Movie/Miniseries and Steph in Toni Erdmann, the German nominee for Best International Feature at the 89th Academy Awards, named best film of 2016 by Sight and Sound magazine, by Film Comment and by Cahiers du Cinema. She's worked across genres with incredible directors in French and English: she's been head of the CIA and MI5; a trophy wife; a serial killer; a UN delegate; a toxic mother; leader of a galactic empire; a cult member; generally been like a pig in sh*t exploring as many facets of human expression as she can get her dirty paws on. She's also a real person outside acting and has a life there, too, which, frankly, is not to be sniffed at. Follow Lucy! Niall Ferguson: DOOM!

Niall Ferguson's most recent book is Doom: The Politics of Catastrophe. In this book he posits that disasters are inherently hard to predict. Pandemics, like earthquakes, wildfires, and financial crises. and wars, are not normally distributed; there is no cycle of history to help us anticipate the next catastrophe. But when disaster strikes, we ought to be better prepared than the Romans were when Vesuvius erupted, or medieval Italians when the Black Death struck.   Yet in 2020 the responses of many developed countries, including the United States, to a new virus from China were badly bungled. Why? While populist leaders certainly performed poorly in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Professor Ferguson argues that more profound pathologies were at work. Drawing from multiple disciplines, including economics, cliodynamics, and network science, Doom offers not just a history but a general theory of disasters, showing why our ever more bureaucratic and complex systems are getting worse at handling them. Niall Ferguson, MA, D.Phil., is the Milbank Family Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and a senior faculty fellow of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard, where he served for twelve years as the Laurence A. Tisch Professor of History. He is the author of sixteen books.  In 2003, Ferguson wrote and presented a six-part history of the British Empire for Channel 4, the UK broadcaster. The accompanying book, Empire: The Rise and Demise of the British World Order and the Lessons for Global Power, was a bestseller in both Britain and the United States. The sequel, Colossus: The Rise and Fall of the American Empire, was published in 2004 by Penguin, and prompted Time magazine to name him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. The international bestseller, The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World, published in 2008 was adapted into a PBS series, winning the International Emmy award for Best Documentary, as well as the Handelszeitung Economics Book Prize. In 2011 he published Civilization: The West and the Rest, also a Channel 4/PBS documentary series. A year later came the three-part television series “China: Triumph and Turmoil.” The book based on his 2012 BBC Reith lectures, The Great Degeneration: How Institutions Decay and Economies Die, was a New York Times bestseller within a week of its publication. Ferguson has been a contributing editor for Bloomberg Television and a columnist for Newsweek. He began writing a twice-a-month column for Bloomberg Opinion in June 2020. www.niallferguson.com twitter.com/nfergus Connect with me:

An elder C.S. Lewis looks back on his remarkable journey from hard-boiled atheist to the most renowned Chrsitian writer of the past century. The Most Reluctant Convert features award-winning actor Max McLean as the older Lewis and Nicholas Ralph - breakout star of PBS Materpiece's All Creatures Great and Small - as young Lewis. Beautifully filmed in and around Oxford, this engaging biopic follows the creator of The Chronicles of Narnia from the tragic death of his mother when he was just nine years- old, through his strained relationship with his father, to the nightmare of the trenches of World War I to Oxford University, where friends like J.R.R. Tolkien challenge his unbelief. Norman Stone Norman Stone began his professional career in television as the youngest producer/director to be working at the BBC, and soon established himself as a top film maker with his highly acclaimed film A Different Drummer about the blind and deaf Christian poet, Jack Clemo. Four years later, he created Shadowlands, the gripping film drama on the love and loss of C.S. Lewis, which earned two BAFTA awards, an International Emmy, and the coveted ‘Prague D'or' for Best Director. This film went on to be an award-winning stage play, as well as a Hollywood movie.Other dramas followed included Martin Luther – Heretic, starring Jonathan Pryce; New World with James Fox; The Vision starring Dirk Bogarde, Lee Remick and Helena Bonham-Carter, and the award-winning Burston Rebellion with Eileen Atkins and Bernard Hill. Stone was also asked to direct the internationally acclaimed CBS co-production Pied Piper, starring Peter O'Toole. He then directed two of the famous BBC Miss Marples films, starring the iconic Joan Hickson in the title role, and also, The Black Velvet Gown, which earned him his second International Emmy. Always interested in experimenting with new forms of filmic storytelling, Stone went on to create and direct The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, which starred Jeremy Irons and was nominated for a prestigious ACE Award in the category of Best International Drama. This experience led directly to Tales from the Mad House, an award-winning series of one-man dramas, featuring such stars as Jonathan Pryce, Dame Eileen Atkins, Joss Ackland, Claire Bloom, James Cosmo and Helen Baxendale, before making the gritty, Glasgow feature film, Man Dancin' which collected more international awards.A string of new dramas followed, including C.S. Lewis - Beyond Narnia, Florence Nightingale, The Narnia Code and KJB - The Book that Changed the World (winner of The Templeton, Movie Guide, Epiphany Prize). In 2020, Norman completed a major Feature Documentary narrated by Ewan McGregor, The Final Fix, exploring a remarkably effective new treatment for drug addiction, and in 2021, during lockdown, he wrote and directed a new, creative drama on C.S. Lewis called The Most Reluctant Convert. This film was cinema-premiered in over 500 American cities in November 2021 and has already been seen in over 120 countries around the world.Norman is currently preparing a dramatically challenging feature film, Raising Hell, the true story of the battle to beat child prostitution in Victorian England, and is also developing an exciting, new TV action series, ROK, set in Gibraltar and the Mediterranean.Website: https://cslewismovie.com/Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBd8bYTMoTKlUAk4IVyb16QFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/CSLewisMovieInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/fpa_theatre/IMDB: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBd8bYTMoTKlUAk4IVyb16Q
