It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Andy Kroll, reporter at ProPublica, to discuss his recent reporting on Leonard Leo and the new Supreme Court judicial ethics code. Then, they're joined by actor Shaan Sharma, member of the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee, to discuss the tentative agreement reached between the union and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel's raid of Al-Shifa hospital, the pro- and anti-war movements regarding Israel, a government shutdown, the UAW's contract, Starbucks' labor action, New York politics, and Paul Pelosi's attacker, also checking in on the large pro-war rally in D.C. that played host to Van Jones, myriad US Congresspeople, and noted antisemitic Pastor John Hagee. Andy Kroll then joins, first running through some quick background on Leonard Leo, and how he came to completely reshape the Federalist Society into perhaps the most influential legal institution in US politics. Kroll begins with the 1992 Conservative Supreme Court affirming Roe v. Wade in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which ignited an organized spark in the Republican party and saw the founding of the Federalist Society some nine years later, serving to funnel conservative lawyers into judgeships, state offices, and the Supreme Court – provided they completely adhere to the society's strict blueprint for jurisprudence. After parsing through the central strategies of the Society (centered around networking), and how the Democrats were completely blindsided by the Society's rise to judicial dominance in the 21st Century, Kroll, Sam, and Emma dive into Leonard Leo's role as Supreme Court Den Mother, doting on the conservative justices to keep them happy and in line with the Society, as has come to light recently. Wrapping up, they look to the weak response from the Senate Judicial Committee to the myriad SCOTUS corruption charges, and whether the Court's new ethics code will completely sweep this story under the rug. Shaan Sharma then walks Sam and Emma through the structure of SAG-AFTRA's national board, and his role in the organization, before touching on the central elements of the negotiation – namely bringing wages into line with cost-of-living, getting actors residuals from streaming, and appropriate AI protections. Next, Sharma explores where he felt the contract proposal falls short, including health care, self-tape and audition protections, and wage growth, before he, Sam, and Emma wrap up the interview with an assessment of the AI policy, the SAG-AFTRA leadership, and the pressures that brought the end of the strike. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Peter Beinart and Michael A. Carole is the first education staff professional to be elected as an officer of the FEA, and previously worked as an exceptional student education (ESE) paraprofessional at Ketterlinus Elementary School in St. Augustine, Fla. In her work and within the larger community, Carole has always been driven to serve. Carole came to Ketterlinus Elementary School in 2000 as a parent, serving initially as a volunteer. She wore many hats at the school: volunteer coordinator, newsletter editor, Title I liaison, computer lab instructor and, for nine years, ESE paraprofessional. In 2008, Carole was the School Related Employee of the Year at Ketterlinus. She served as an advocate for the members of the St. Johns Educational Support Professional Association (SJESPA) for several years, first as a school representative and beginning in May 2015 as local union president. Carole has held leadership positions on numerous councils and teams within her school district and union, and has given many hours as a church and community volunteer. In 2018, she received FEA's Educational Support Professional of the Year award. In October 2018, she was elected secretary-treasurer of the organization. Carole was named vice president in September 2020, when then-Vice President Andrew Spar rose to the presidency following the departure of the previous president, Fedrick Ingram, to become secretary-treasurer of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Carole and her husband, David, have one son. Michael A. Cohen is a columnist for MSNBC, a fellow for the Eurasia Group Foundation and is the publisher of the newsletter Truth and Consequences. He also has ADHD and is one of the many Americans who has struggled to fill his Adderall prescription over the last few years. On April 29th, he published the opinion piece, "The Adderall Shortage is the Mental Health Crisis No One's Talking About" on The Daily Beast, sharing parts of his own story intertwined with a handful of interviews he did, including a conversation with Rep. From 2006 to 2019, Miller was a public policy scholar; vice president for new initiatives, and director of the Middle East program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. This perfect blend is evident everywhere from his viral Pachelbel Rant, his observations on popular music, to his well-crafted original songs. He previously worked as a speechwriter at the US State Department, on Capitol Hill, and at NBC; was a Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation and a fellow at the Century Foundation, the American Security Project, and the World Policy Institute; and has also been a lecturer at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. PETER COYOTE began his film career at 39, after living nearly a dozen years in the counter-culture during the 1960s and 70s. Since then, he has performed as an actor for some of the world's most distinguished filmmakers, including: Barry Levinson, Roman Polanski, Pedro Almodovar, Steven Spielberg, Walter Hill, Martin Ritt, Steven Soderberg, Diane Kurys, Sidney Pollack and Jean Paul Rappeneau. To date he has made over 150 films. In 2006 he had a major role in three televison series: The Inside on Fox-TV, the 4400 on USA Channel and played the Vice-President to Geena Davis's President on Commander in Chief for ABC-TV until the show's end. In 2011 he starred as the District Attorney in the new version of Law and Order – LA. In 2000 year he was the on-camera announcer of the Academy Awards Ceremony, taking the heavy-lifting off co-host Billy Crystal's shoulders for the detailed announcements and data which played live to an estimated one billion listeners. In 2007 he was prominently featured as an old boxing promoter in Rod Lurie's “Resurrecting the Champ” with Samuel. L. Jackson and Josh Hartnett, and also as Sally Field's disreputable writing teacher on the television series, “Brothers and Sisters.” He recently completed a six hour series called The Disappearance which aired last year. Most recently, he played Robert Mueller to Jeff Daniel's Jim Comey, and Brendan Gleeson's Donald Trump. The series is called The Comey Rule and will be released this year on SHOWTIME. Mr. Coyote has written a memoir of his counter-culture years called Sleeping Where I Fall which received universally excellent reviews, appeared on three best-seller lists and sold five printings in hardback after being released by Counterpoint Press in 1999, it was re-released in November of 2010 and has been in continuous release ever since. It is currently in use as a source text for Sixties Studies in a number of universities including Harvard where he was invited to teach “The Theater of Protest” last year.. An early chapter from that book, “Carla's Story, won the 1993/94 Pushcart Prize for Excellence in non-fiction. His new book, The Rainman's Third Cure, released in April, 2015 is a study of mentors and the search for wisdom and he is currently readying a new book for publication in 2021-(TITLE) The I Behind the Mask: The Lone Ranger and Tonto meet the Buddha. Mr. Coyote is well-known for his narration work, and has voiced 150 documentaries and TV specials, including the nine-hour PBS Special, The West. In 1992 he won an EMMY as the “Host” for a nine-hour series, called, The Pacific Century which also won the prestigious duPont-Columbia Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism. In 2010 he recorded the12 hour series on The National Parks for Ken Burns and has recently completed the voice-work on Mr. Burns most recent series—a 16 hour special on The History of Country Music. He won a second Emmy for his narration on The Roosevelts, and has also done Prohibition, The Dust Bowl, and an 18 Hour series on Vietnam with Ken Burns. Mr Coyote and Mr Burns just completed a long series on Ernest Hemingway. In 2011 he was ordained as a Zen Buddhist priest and in 2015 received “transmission” from his teacher, making him an independent Zen teacher. He makes his home on a farm in Northern California, and considers working on his 1952 Dodge Power-Wagon his longest lasting addiction.
