Something a little outside of the normal scope of Countermelody for today's episode: Earlier this year I published a bonus episode on the fascinating singer/songwriter Benard Ighner (1945-2017) and his modern-day standard “Everything Must Change,” which I re-present today. The song has had a profound effect on me ever since I heard the version by the great Oleta Adams on her 1990 solo debut album, Circle of One. At the time I assumed that Oleta herself had written it, but I came to discover that it was penned by Ighner and first recorded by Quincy Jones on his 1974 album, Body Heat, and that since then many, many pop and jazz singers of the past fifty years have covered the song. All these different versions have both delighted and fascinated (as well as occasionally mystified and frustrated) me. The song itself is both fatalistic and hopeful, which is exactly the place I find myself as Election Day in the US approaches. Intrigued by both the song and its composer, I dug deeper and discovered all I could about Benard Ighner. An autodidactic musical polymath, Ighner rubbed shoulders with some of the greatest pop and jazz musicians of his time, and not just the hundreds of singers and instrumentalists who have jumped on the “Everything Must Change” bandwagon! This song brings out either the very best or the very worst of those who interpret it. In choosing my favorite versions, I have veered toward those who embrace understatement rather than vocal caterwauling and children's choruses. The episode begins with examples of Ighner's early work from the late sixties and early seventies, including pseudonymous encounters with Dizzy Gillespie (as Benard Ito) and Lalo Schifrin (as Alexander Saint Charles); proceeding through songs he wrote and produced for Shirley Bassey, Marlena Shaw, and Carmen McRae; as well as two excerpts from his solo album, a one-off 1978 Japanese release entitled Little Dreamer. We then hear ten different versions of the song, including, among others, Nina Simone, June Christy, Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan, Minako Yoshida (sung to her own Japanese translation), a recent magisterial live performance by Oleta Adams, and, even Ighner himself, who, alongside his other many musical talents, possessed a velvety baritone voice of exceptional beauty, poise, and power. May this episode provide hope, courage, and insight for all of those who do believe that we can overcome the mad popularity-contest antics of this election cycle and lean toward a future in which morality and hope can still prove to be guiding principles. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Oleta Adams cond. by Jörg Achim Keller | Musikmesse Festival Frankfurt, Congress Center, April 2017 || Anfang der 90er Jahre landete Oleta Adams mehrere internationale Hits unter eigenem Namen, etwa "Get here" oder "Window of Hope". (Sendung vom 14.7.)

A (relatively) in-depth analysis of the 1989 album 'The Seeds of Love' by Tears for Fears in (just over) ten minutes. In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber. The Seeds of Love is the third Tears for Fears album. Although the production was reminiscent of Smile-era Beach Boys with lengthy studio time and abandoned recording sessions costing over £1 million, the album was an international success, entering the UK Albums Chart at number one. Following her work with Tears for Fears, Oleta Adams was offered a recording contract with Fontana Records. Roland Orzabal co-produced her album, Circle of One.The Seeds of Love was remastered and reissued in 1999 with four bonus tracks and was re-reissued in 2020 in five different formats including a 5-disc super deluxe edition boxed set featuring bonus material including, B-sides, demos and outtakes. In 2022, Tears for Fears released their seventh album, The Tipping Point. This is Episode 14 of Season 3 - a huge thank you to the overwhelming numbers of listeners over the past two years as the Low Noise podcast continues to evolve in its own inimitable way. I truly appreciate all your interest and support.I hope you enjoy this episode.Mathew WoodallThe introduction features an excerpt from 'Ma' from the album 'Asimov' by Inafer Era. Welcome to another episode of Funky Pearls Radio, where the soul of music lives and legends are celebrated. Today, we're delving into the story of an artist whose voice is a testament to the power of pure emotion and whose journey reminds us that talent knows no bounds. This is the story of Oleta Adams, a singer, songwriter, and pianist whose music transcends genres and touches the heart.Born on May 4, 1953, in Seattle, Washington, and raised in Yakima, Oleta Adams was introduced to music at a young age. With a gospel singer as a father, music was a constant presence in her life, shaping her future and her dreams. Oleta's journey wasn't straightforward; it was a path marked by perseverance, resilience, and an unwavering belief in her own talents.Oleta's career began in the early '70s, playing in hotel bars and clubs, honing her craft, and captivating those who heard her. Her voice, imbued with the depth of gospel and the versatility of jazz and soul, made her a standout artist, yet mainstream success was elusive. It wasn't until the late '80s that her life and career would take a pivotal turn, thanks to an encounter with the British band Tears for Fears. While performing in a Kansas City hotel bar, Oleta's voice caught the attention of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, the core members of Tears for Fears. They were so moved by her performance that they invited her to collaborate on their next album, "The Seeds of Love," marking the beginning of her international acclaim. Her rendition of "Woman in Chains" showcased her incredible vocal range and emotional depth, earning her widespread recognition. But it was her solo album, "Circle of One," released in 1990, that truly cemented her place in the music world. The album, produced with the help of Tears for Fears, featured the hit single "Get Here," a ballad that became an anthem of the Gulf War, resonating with families and loved ones separated by the conflict. Oleta Adams' rendition of this song spoke of longing and love with such sincerity and passion that it touched the souls of listeners worldwide.Oleta's music is a celebration of human emotions, from love and longing to strength and resilience. Her albums, including "Evolution," "Moving On," and "Come Walk with Me," further showcase her versatility as an artist and her ability to connect with her audience on a deeply personal level.Despite the challenges and obstacles she faced, Oleta Adams has remained true to her artistry, her faith, and her unique voice. Her journey teaches us that with talent, determination, and heart, it's possible to overcome the odds and make an indelible mark on the world. Here at Funky Pearls Radio, we honor Oleta Adams not just for her soul-stirring music but for her journey—a reminder that true talent will always find its way. As we continue to celebrate her contributions to music, let's be inspired by her story, her perseverance, and the beautiful legacy she continues to build.Thank you for tuning into Funky Pearls Radio. BLACK & WHITE 1968. In this episode, we talk about one of our absolute favorite bands, Tears For Fears, and more specifically, their career-changing feminist anthem, "Woman in Chains," which introduced the world (but not Todd's dad!) to the stunning Oleta Adams. It also featured the drumming talents of both Manu Katché--already famous for playing with Peter Gabriel--and the inimitable Phil Collins. Oh yeah. . .and it totally featured a Fairlight synthesizer, too, because of COURSE it would, and if you're a regular listener of this podcast, you're already well aware of it. Our movie this time is the clever, thorny, and ultimately problematic 1988 dark comedy "Heathers," starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, which could only have been made in the era before suicides and school shootings were all-too-common occurrences in this country. You've been warned; both subjects are prominent story arcs in the movie. Want to hear us discuss a song, band, or movie from the 80's and beyond? Have a comment or a question? Since the 1950's, the US Government has hired Modernist architects like Edward Durell Stone, John Johansen, Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, Richard Neutra, and more recently Kieran Timberlake to design US Embassies all over the world. Modernism most clearly expresses the idea of freedom and these buildings are a showcase for America. But as Dr. Phil might say, “how's that working for us?” Joining us are Angel Dizon, who supervised $2B worth of construction projects for the US State Department and is now with the GSA - and returning podcast guest Mina Chow, architecture professor at USC and producer of the documentary Face of a Nation: What Happened to the World's Fair? Later on, musical guest Oleta Adams.

In Minneapolis, the Peterson family musical dynasty goes back decades. Paul Peterson didn't even have to think about what he'd do with his life. In his late teens, he was pegged to join Morris Day and the Time for their Ice Cream Castles album which became their biggest and featured hits like "Jungle Love" and "The Bird". From there, Prince decided to build The Family, one of his many 80s side projects, around the voices of Paul and Susannah Melvoin. But, after one album The Family ended and Paul went solo. For over 30 years, Paul has been making his own music (new album Break On Free just came out) and working as an in demand hired gun for people like Steve Miller, Kenny Loggins, Oleta Adams and Donny Osmond. In addition to his excellent new album, Paul has a great podcast called Music on the Run about staying in shape on the road. It's a unique and fascinating story you have to hear! www.paulpeterson.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

4 Jahre Produktionszeit, 1 Million Pfund Kosten.

From being the musical director of one of the most well-known productions in the history of Broadway to now changing the world through story and our view of ourselves, my guest today has a well of wisdom to share with us. During his career and working on Hamilton as its musical director, Julian Reeve brought story to life through music and emotion. In this episode, he talks about the success of Hamilton and Lin-Manuel Miranda's gift as a storyteller, being better as a performer the freer you feel, and becoming aware of perfectionism's effect on him and using self-compassion as a tool to manage it. In our interview, we explore such questions as: Why is Hamilton such a success? What did Julian newly discover that he could dive into, years after conducting the show? What happened in Puerto Rico that forced him to stop and essentially ended his career? What would he say to someone who acknowledges that their perfection prevents them from getting their story out there? What you will learn in this episode: Why moral leadership is a powerful tool How to keep repeated storytelling fresh How to approach managing perfectionism Who is Julian? Julian Reeve was born in Cambridge, England and has enjoyed successful careers in music, business, and education. Before moving to the United States and becoming the Music Director for Hamilton on its first national tour, he traveled the world as a musician and worked on over 25 major musical theater productions across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. In business and education, he produced and promoted the Oleta Adams in Concert UK tour, co-founded a London-based boutique talent agency representing over 100 performers, and worked extensively as a performance specialist in leading performing arts schools across the UK. He'd go on to become a faculty member of The Broadway Experience in Tokyo and New York and create an educational company that provides Broadway workshops to schools and theater communities worldwide. At age 43, Julian suffered a mild heart attack after a performance of Hamilton in San Francisco. Identifying the root cause as perfectionism, he realized that having a better understanding of his perfectionism at an earlier age could've prevented this experience. He quit performing and started striving to change the way people perceive and manage perfectionism to ensure that perfectionists (and those who employ them) can still thrive. To that end, he recently invented a superhero for younger perfectionists, Captain Perfection, and published a self-help book featuring the character. Julian aims for his creation to empower kids to develop healthy management techniques for their perfectionism through self-compassion. His book leans heavily on research that states that interventions with self-compassion moderate the link between depression and perfectionism, which he also talks about in his 2019 TEDx Talk and his work with businesses.
