In this engaging video, Luke Hansen takes on the criticisms of the Book of Abraham, particularly those raised by Cameron Bert from the YouTube channel Capturing Christianity. The video delves into the historical context of Joseph Smith's acquisition of ancient papyri and mummies in 1835, which led to the creation of the Book of Abraham. Hansen provides a detailed analysis of the translation process, highlighting the complexities and controversies surrounding it. He addresses common misconceptions about Joseph Smith's use of the so-called Egyptian alphabet and grammar documents, clarifying that these were not directly linked to the translation of the Book of Abraham. Instead, they were part of a broader attempt by Smith and his associates to understand ancient languages. Throughout the video, Hansen emphasizes the importance of considering both secular and spiritual perspectives when evaluating the Book of Abraham. He acknowledges the challenges posed by critics but also points out the numerous historical and linguistic accuracies found within the text. Hansen encourages viewers to explore the spiritual dimensions of the book, suggesting that personal revelation plays a crucial role in understanding its significance. This video serves as an informative resource for anyone interested in the intersection of faith, history, and scholarship.⏱️⏱️VIDEO CHAPTERS⏱️⏱️:00:00:00 - Introduction to Cameron Bert's Criticisms00:01:30 - Joseph Smith and the Book of Abraham00:03:01 - Egyptian Papers and Translation Claims00:04:29 - Critique of Kirtland Egyptian Papers00:06:03 - Understanding Egyptian Symbols and Texts00:07:44 - Lion Couch Scene and Jewish Perspectives00:09:06 - Repurposing Egyptian Stories in Christianity00:10:44 - Church Response to 1912 Egyptologist Critiques00:12:23 - Modern Analysis of Papyrus Fragments00:14:02 - Radical Ideas in the Book of Abraham00:15:36 - Historical Details and Predictions00:17:20 - Biographical Details of Abraham's Life00:18:55 - Interpretation of Facsimiles and Figures00:20:33 - Spiritual and Secular Knowledge Discussion00:22:06 - Conclusion and Supporting the Channel⚡ For this and more visit WardRadio.com

I am daily inundated with spiritual copies of the real thing. Countless nearly perfect duplicates of the original Gospel message compete for my allegiance. Counterfeit options to Biblical truth abound. I am routinely assaulted with reams of meaningless religious facsimiles vying for my full devotion. I mustn't be fooled. Jesus alone is the real thing. “This Jesus is both True God and Real Life. Dear children, be on guard against all clever facsimiles,” (1st John 5.20c-21 “The Message”).
We have our first live action Disney world represented in Kingdom Hearts with Port Royal, a terrifying world filled with spooky, horrifying abominations of nature that delve deep in the uncanny valley. And also it has ghost skeleton pirates! After that we head back to Agrabah and stumble through a clumsy half retelling of our first Disney direct to video sequel story. And most importantly, we stay away from going under the sea for a week longer.
I discuss the significant overview of Mormon Apologist/Scholar Michael Dennis Rhodes and his over view of the strongest significant evidences in favor of the Book of Abraham facsimiles. It turns out every single solitary evidence Rhodes pulls up significantly falls flat and fails.
I share some more stunning insights into the Egyptological aspects of the Book of Abraham showing the apologists are wrong on so many counts and in so many ways.
I explore the literalness of Joseph Smith and Kevin Barney's Semitic Adaptation of the Facsimiles and Papyri theory and show that, while ingenious, it is fatally flawed.

Om this episode of the Gnostic Deluge we continue to look at the Mormon psuedepigraphical "Pearl of Great Price". Joseph Smith purchased four genuine egyptian mummies and some papyrus with genuine hieroglyphic writing in July of 1835. He soon after said that the papyrus contained the writing of Abraham while he was in Egypt , written by his own hand upon papyrus. In 1842 he published the translation as the Book of Abraham which is now part of the LDS churches Pearl of Great Price and canonized scripture for the church. Somethings we talk about in this episode will sound familiar, while others will be new and esoteric. Enjoy! Today we’re talking facsimiles: Why the real, original Declaration of Independence doesn’t look like it was printed on crinkly, pirate treasure map-style brown paper! The early work that Edgar Allan Poe hated so much that he tried to destroy, but only succeeded in making the surviving copies all the more monetarily (but not poetically) valuable! The publishing house creating such beautiful facsimile editions of modern literature that people started using them to do dust jacket fraud! The advances in printing technology that have recently made it possible to forge an entire book! And why, sometimes, the hardest thing about spotting a fake is letting its owner down easy.

The first major scholarly analysis and critique of the Book of Abraham by world-class Egyptologists came in 1912 and was published in the New York Times. Of course this article was neither appropriately considered nor adequately addressed by LDS church leadership, and ultimately the issue faded from LDS church membership consciousness for several more decades. Beginning in 1966 with the rediscovery of the core Book of Abraham papyri fragments found in the archives of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art (that were thought to have been lost in the 1871 Great Chicago Fire), Mormon apologists such as Hugh Nibley, John Gee, Daniel C. Peterson, Kerry Muhlestein, Michael D. Rhodes, etc. have attempted to employ apologetic tactics to rescue the Book of Abraham from a total loss of credibility - once credible translations of the papyrus demonstrated undeniably that Joseph Smith's "translation" was 100% inaccurate, and in fact, had nothing to do with Abraham at all. In fact, the papyri were dated to be written over 1500 years after the time Abraham would have lived. For decades questioning, doubting, and non-believing Mormons have engaged with Mormon apologists like Nibley, Gee, Muhlestein, and Rhodes to determine the historicity and legitimacy of the Book of Abraham - with the credibility of Joseph Smith and the LDS church restoration hanging in the balance. In spite of the LDS church's century-long efforts to either hide or convolute the issues surrounding the Book of Abraham, many Mormons have lost their faith and left the church over the Book of Abraham, as it is often listed as one of the primary reasons that Mormons lose their faith. While many orthodox, doubting, and post-Mormons have heard the opinions of pseudo-Egyptologists/Book of Abraham apologists like John Gee, Kerry Muhlestein, and Michael D. Rhodes, few Mormons or post-Mormons have actually heard the opinions of a legitimate, world-class Egyptologist about the historicity and credibility of the Book of Abraham - until today. Today, as a joint production of Mormon Stories Podcast and Radio Free Mormon podcast, we interview Dr. Robert Ritner. Dr. Ritner is Professor of Egyptology at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago and was from 1991-1996 the first Marilyn M. Simpson Assistant Professor of Egyptology at Yale University. Dr. Ritner is the author of over 100 publications on Egyptian religion, magic, medicine, language and literature, as well as social and political history. He has lectured extensively on each of these topics throughout the United States, Europe and Egypt. Ritner has led Oriental Institute tours of Egypt for 30 years. He is also the author of The Joseph Smith Egyptian Papyri: A Complete Edition, and an essay entitled “Translation and Historicity of the Book of Abraham” — A Response - written as a response to the LDS church's gospel topics essay on the Book of Abraham, which is deeply problematic according to Dr. Ritner. In this three-part sit-down with Dr. Ritner, we will discuss his upbringing in Houston, Texas and his scholarly background and the events that led to him becoming interested in the Book of Abraham. We will provide a contextualizing history to the Book of Abraham story, and discuss in-depth Joseph Smith's completely erroneous translation of Facsimiles 1-3 from the papyrus. We explore the emergence of the Abraham Egyptian Papers in the mid 1960s, along with the discovery of the "lost" Book of Abraham papyrus. We end this series by exploring some of the seemingly unscholarly and disingenuous tactics used by Book of Abraham apologists John Gee, Kerry Muhlestein, and Michael D. Rhodes to try to bolster belief in the Book of Abraham. Finally, a HUGE thanks to Bruce MacArthur for making this interview possible. Critics of the Book of Abraham have long pointed out the flaws of Joseph Smith's "translation" of Egyptian from the Facsimiles. "As early as 1913, intelligentsia and leadership alike of the LDS church acknowledged that Smith had failed to meet the standards of contemporary scholarship regarding his translation efforts." -Terryl Givens https://bit.ly/2HzIqis Over a hundred years ago, B.H. Roberts made an argument similar to the "catalyst" theory promoted by the LDS gospel topics essay today. https://bit.ly/2P2gHLo In the February 1913 edition of the Improvement Era, he wrote: "Joseph Smith's purpose, as higher critics say the purpose of the New Testament writers was, NOT TO WRITE HISTORY, BUT TO EDIFY," to teach some religious truth "which they regarded as all important;" not to give out correct translations of ancient documents, but to give the world some "spiritual allegory, or drama." [emphasis added] https://bit.ly/2HxIyPF But the "catalyst theory" - an attempt to allow the Book of Abraham to be considered an inspired work without necessarily having historicity - is problematic to some critics. If Joseph Smith's work should be viewed as pseudipigraphic, believers are left with thorny questions such as "How could Joseph Smith think he was translating an ancient document when he really wasn't?" or "Why would Joseph Smith claim the Book of Abraham was 'by his own hand written upon papyrus'?" https://bit.ly/37GXbuN In this episode of our series on The CES Letter, 4 Mormons attempt to make what they think to be the strongest possible argument and evidence in favor of the catalyst theory. Referencing the $2,400 expenditure of the scrolls (~$76,000 today), the First Vision as a "higher consciousness" experience, and the "onto-normativity" and continual attempt by Joseph Smith to experience the divine, we attempt to argue for a more complicated approach to understanding Joseph Smith's worldview from a psychological standpoint. We will continue our discussion of the "prophet puzzle" and psychology of Joseph Smith in next week's episode: "The Prophet Puzzle in Light of the Book of Abraham." *** Why the CES Letter? On this episode, we dive into the actual content of the Book of Abraham in our continued examination of the history of the book. We read extracts of each chapter with a bit of study guide along the way. We cover Abraham’s story arc in the book, the deeper doctrines and teachings which come from the Book, and we examine some of the cultural milieu from whence the Book of Abraham arose. We cover Joseph’s rewriting of the Genesis creation narrative, racism within the books of Mormon canon, and the Hebrew root of ‘Kolob’. What would it take to get rid of some of these pieces of doctrine, canon, and theology in the modern Church? After that we’re joined by Lesley Butterfield of Unrighteous Dominion to discuss abuse in its many manifestations within the culture of the LDS Church.
