Doves are the highest-harvested game bird in the United States, with over 10 million bagged annually.  The high harvest rate isn't surprising, considering dove hunting season is the first hunting season to open for most wing shooters. However, the dove's widespread range no doubt contributes to the large harvest. They can be found in nearly every state and much of Canada. They breed from the west coast to the east coast, as far north as southeast Alaska and south into Mexico. Such a massive range and the ability to live in urban and rural landscapes have kept the dove population robust.

Plant of the week Common Name: Stout Bamboo Grass; Pillar of Smoke (known in the US) Scientific Name: Austrostipa ramosissima Family:Poaceae Leaves: an attractive tall tufted perennial grass with a short rhizome but differs because of its culms (stems) with whorled branches. The stems are bamboo-like. Flowers: -spring to summer with creamy-white, spreading panicle that is 8 to 50 cm long with striking long, bent awns on the seeds. Feathery feel to the flowers. Height: 1-2.5m tall forming a sizeable clump over time. Distribution: from south eastern Queensland to far south eastern New South Wales, with isolated spots in north eastern Queensland and central New South Wales Interesting fact: used in landcare revegetation projects to attract seed eating birds and control erosion. Is an important habitat for butterflies and small birds, and a plentiful food source for wombats. Hardiness: drought and frost resistant. Growing from seed: Fresh seed will germinate in a couple of weeks if using smoke treatment such as wildflower seed starter. Can also be propagated by division. Uses: bird and insect attracting garden, native garden; bushland garden; hedging for a few years, but will need replacing by pulling out the parent plants and letting new seedlings that have self-sown, Maintenance: Mature plants can be cut back hard to just aboveground level in late winter to reinvigorate and encourage new growth. It is a relatively low maintenance species but some selective weeding may be necessary as there is potential for seedlings to spread throughout the garden. I'm talking with Adrian O'Malley, native plant expert and horticulturist.

On this episode, Ginger recalls two wars humans declared on birds and subsequently lost. First, the Emu Wars of Australia, where the military sent two machine guns to wipe out 20,000 birds the size of Tom Cruise with the same energy. And, like a real life cartoon, it goes about the way you expect. Second, the time when Maoist China declared war on sparrows, took it way to seriously, and millions died from starvation. Basically, the moral of the story is don't f*** with birds. Featuring the benefits of buying secondhand birds, Ren's lifelong feud with a parrot, and the odds of Ginger winning in a fistfight with an infant. Bonus: DJ and DJ Sr. making way too much noise. In today’s episode, we are in the “Windy City”, the “City of Big Shoulders”, or more commonly Chicago! He is originally from Reno, Nevada, but now lives in Chicago where he attends the University of Chicago in pursuit of his PhD in Music Composition. I met Paul when he was just in high school and he blew me away with his musical knowledge and insanely deep musical intuition. He is a brilliant composer and we know he will be a big star very soon. He was recently the recipient of the American Composers Orchestra’s 2020 Underwood Commission for a new work that will premiere in Carnegie Hall. Paul also traveled to Burapha, Thailand, as part of the Thai Experimental Laboratory for Young Composers where he collaborated with Thai musicians and composed a new piece for traditional Thai instruments. He currently has several commissions from ensembles including the Boston New Music Initiative, KINETIC Ensemble, and Willinger Duo. In our episode today, we talk about Scriabin, harmonic melody, the erhu, the idea of “ma”, and having a life changing experience by having a pieced performed as a young person. It's a cloudy late August afternoon on the banks of the Thames Estuary near Benfleet in Essex. Wild gusts of wind race in over the water. On this side, spots of rain float in the air but a mile away on Canvey Island there's sun. It's low tide. Birds swoop and swirl over the exposed mudflats, hunting for food. Redshanks, gulls, little egrets, oyster catchers, curlew, avocet, crows. We climb down onto the mud and leave the microphones beside a tall upright rock for some shelter. It's not unlike a standing stone. The traffic on Canvey Island is a distant rumble, punctuated by the occasional motorbike. From behind, an aircraft takes off from Southend Airport flying directly overhead, tearing the sky, then out over the estuary. The wind drops and a blissful peace returns. Feathery wings swoosh nearby. Trains pass softly on the London Tilbury Southend railway line. Mud bubbles and pops in the quiet, sparkling with the movements of tiny creatures enlivened by the drying air.
