On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are joined by extra special guest, Greg Dengler (of our Army of Darkness episode fame), to wade into the shark-filled Los Angeles water with a bunch of straight-up dinguses in the 2013 “film” from Anthony C. Ferrante, Sharknado. “Syfy joke” isn't some clever turn of phrase we're using to describe this thing. It's a ridiculous experiment in bad movie-making that somehow captured the attention of enough people to allow for the funding and production of five additional sequels! Are the rest as gobsmacking and terrible as this first installment? I'm assuming they're worse, but you may never get to find out, dear listener/reader. After watching this fever dream of a movie, I find myself wishing that the sharks had won. It would have done my movie-loving soul good to see this movie end with Ian Ziering not make it out of the belly of the shark that gobbled him up whole. CHOMP! Credits. A better world is left for all.   These are not the heroes that this world needs or deserves. One day, if sharknados become a real and terrifying thing (and they just might considering the ravages of climate change), please send anyone else to save us all. The only bright, shining spot to this whole affair is that it gave us a chance to talk about it, so enjoy the episode. And if you're going to watch this thing, make sure you do it with a friend. SHARKNADO Director, Anthony C. Ferrante [Episode 40]

The Nick Taylor Horror Show

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 9, 2020 67:59

Anthony C. Ferrante is an American filmmaker, director, and writer, best known for being the man behind the Sharknado franchise. In addition to Sharknado 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, Anthony has directed such horror hits as Boo, Forgotten Evil, and Zombie Tidal Wave. Anthony and I talked a lot about Sharknado, as well as how he's able to make his sets an unbelievably fun experience that attracts his cast and crew to constantly want to work with him. This is a real art when you're working with low budgets, which all of the Sharknado movies were on, but Anthony has a lot to say on the topic of making your sets enjoyable. So we get some tips on that, discuss COVID-era filmmaking and hear more about what he has in store next. All of this and so much more on today's episode of The Nick Taylor Horror Show.  Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Anthony C. Ferrante.    Embrace the energy of desperation. The Sharknado movies are what Anthony calls $20 million movies made for $1 million. When you have a scope that big and a budget so low, every minute on set counts as does every dollar spent. Collectively, this can cause filmmakers and crew members to often scramble and hustle on sets because time is money. These kinds of circumstances and this energy often translates to the screen and it makes for a very interesting and fun vibe. (Just look at Evil Dead.)  Having less time and less money also forces quick decision making and this decisiveness will only serve you as a director in the future, given the millions of decisions that have to be made on productions.  When big budget films are shot at a slow, lumbering and comfortable pace, and everything goes smoothly, it often translates to a pretty boring movie (of course there are many exceptions). But, you're an indie filmmaker, your movies are supposed to feel rough around the edges because they were such a bitch to make! Don't fight this, embrace it because it will serve your film and give it a noticeable energy.    Sometimes they just got to trust you. Anthony described a case on one of the Sharknado movies where he had to improvise a brand new complicated scene on set because at the last minute, certain important props and center pieces weren't available.  Flying by the seam of his pants, he had to improvise an elaborate action sequence that he could see in his head and he had 20 minutes to do it. He went to his actors and simply said: 'trust me and follow exactly what I'm saying' and they worked it out in one shot that was filmed and edited in real time. Sometimes you're not always going to have time to explain every last detail of every last decision to every single actor. In order to properly orchestrate what you see in your head, you need to build trust with your actors. This often comes with time, and definitely has to be earned.    Empathize with your entire crew. When it comes to low budget movies, there is such a fine line between a fun set and a hellish set. Low budgets, punishing schedules, and grueling elements can either wear everyone down or pump them up. Some indie movies are a blast, and people talk about how they were paid next to nothing and loved every minute of it. When you hear Howard Berger & Greg Nicotero talk about working on Evil Dead, there's a clip where they mention that they were paid $400 a week but every single day was like summer camp and they would have done it for free. I'm not saying not to pay your cast and crew as well as you can, but what I am saying is that it is part of your job as a director to build a set that people are going to want to come to, partially because you are going to want crew members to become longtime collaborators. Anthony talked about how the key to doing this is understanding that everyone is doing a job, and that you have to give them the time, space, respect, and resources to do their jobs. This largely comes down to empathy and understanding what each job entails which is why Anthony always urges aspiring directors to learn as much as they can about every job done on films. He actually has worn multiple hats across multiple productions which has helped him empathize with his crew and run better sets.  Will you have to continually inspire your crew? Will you have to remind them you're running out of time and money? Will you have to crack the whip sometimes? Of course, but there's a conscious & respectful way to do all of these things. Mastering this concept can turn your rag tag indie crew into a community and ultimately an unstoppable force. So make a conscious effort to make your productions an enjoyable and overall positive experience, because it can so easily be the opposite.     ----- Produced by Simpler Media

Rundown: We bring on our old Pop Show friends Peter Brown, Ryan Mitchelle and Anthony C. Ferrante to discuss scary movies we might not think are our favorites but that we just really, really like. Then we discuss the new tennis horror film, a Kafkaesque distortion of the natural order, Battle of the Sexes starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell… my description might not be entirely accurate… then we welcome again Jeff Bond and Alexandra August to talk about Episode 05 of Star Trek: Discovery. Topic 1: Scary Movies We Love with Anthony, Peter & Ryan Anytime is a good time for scary movies, but October is THE BEST time. Smith and I shared some of our favorite scary movies last year with Patrick Bromely from F This Movie. This year, we decided to have a little Assignment X Pop Show reunion to talk about some of our horror movie favorites. We have my favorite chainsaw wielding maniac, Anthony C. Ferrante, director of a few horror movies himself, including “Boo” and “Headless Horseman,” as well as the “Sharknado” movies and “Forgotten Evil.” We also have my favorite axe-wielding serial killer Ryan Mitchelle, director of “Jesus, Bro!”, and my favorite favorite cannibal who will eat your liver with fava beans and a nice chianti, Peter Brown, associate editor of Assignment X. Thank you, gentlemen, for joining us. Let’s just jump right and talk about our favorite horror movies to watch in October.  Anthony: American Werewolf In London (1981) The Changling, Videodrome Ryan: Poltergist (1982) Peter: The Thing (1982) Chris: The Dead Zone (1983) Sonia: The Tingler/House on Haunted Hill (1959) - Vincent Price movies, Christine   Topic 2: Battle Of The Sexes Our review of the new Battle of the Sexes, new film directed by Little Miss Sunshine’s Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris and starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell. It’s about the famous 1970s exhibition tennis match between the world’s reigning top women’s player, Billie Jean King and one time men’s champion Bobby Riggs.    Topic 3: Episode Discussion, Star Trek: Discovery Ep05 Returning today to talk about Star Trek: Discovery Ep05, "Choose Your Pain” is my favorite living critic, Jeff Bond. He’s the author of several books, including The Music of Star Trek and The Art of Star Trek: The Kelvin Timeline, as well as a forthcoming book on Seth MacFarlane's The Orville. Also joining us is Alexandra August, one of the quickest, funniest pop culture commenters we know, Alexandra August. Through Season 7, we’ve been doing weekly versions of our Status Check segment, taking a look at each and every episode and giving our thoughts. So what else is there to say about Game of Thrones? A lot. With the 8th and final season of this hugely influential show coming, we thought we’d take a look at all of Season 7 and also talk about GOT as a thing. Now that we can see the end, where does it rank with the great TV shows? The Breaking Bads, the Mad Mens, the Hill Street Blues and the Star Treks? Is Game of Thrones merely a great genre show, or is it one of the greats. Joining us today is a leading expert Game of Thrones, and someone who will be joining our Star Trek: Discovery status checks in a few weeks, Alexandra August. Show Rundown:  In this week’s episode, we review Christopher Nolan’s new movie, “Dunkirk.” In our second segment Peter Brown from Assignment X and our other podcast Dorking Out About Trailers joins us to talk about - duh - trailers; the trailers from Comic Con - to be more specific. Peter sticks around for our final segment, in which we talk about Sunday night’s episode of Game Of Thrones.   Topic 1: Dunkirk Review and Thoughts on Christopher Nolan In recent years movies have been discussed in terms of extended universes, reboots and intellectual property which launched a thousand movie tickets. From Hunger Games to Marvel, from Ghostbusters to the upcoming Dark Tower, it seems studios have left the era of director driven films and only think in terms of IP. One of the very few directors who still stands out as a brand unto himself, as the Spielbergs and Tarantinos did in decades past, is Christopher Nolan. While he did do his time in the comic book mines, by making three of the greatest comic book movies ever made in the Dark Knight trilogy, he’s now thought of as an artistic voice in his own right. From Inception to Interstellar, from The Prestige to this week’s Dunkirk, it seems he’s one of the vanishingly few directors whose name alone can almost guarantee a big opening weekend. So his latest is Dunkirk, a World War II story about the evacuation of the British and French armies at Dunkirk in one of the darkest moments of the war.   Topic 2: The Trailers Of Comic-Con If you’re a dork, geek, nerd or spaz, then you know that Comic Con happened last week in San Diego. I’m joking, because, of course, gone are the days when Comic Con was just just for dorks. Every TV show, every movie participates in Comic Con now. It’s the center of everything pop culture, including “Sharknado 5” directed by friend of the podcast Anthony C. Ferrante (shameless plug). Last week, a million trailers came out, and we want to talk about them, so Peter Brown from Assignment X and our other special podcast Dorking Out About Trailers, is joining us to talk about all the buzzy new trailers and whatever news that captured our interest. Daenerys sends the dornishmen along the Greyjoy fleet to Sunspear, the Unsullied to Casterly Rock and decides to not move on to King's Landing yet, intending to install a siege instead. Grey Worm and Missandei declare their love for one another, which they consummate before Grey Worm leaves with the Unsullied. There, Cersei has gathered many lords and insisted on fear for the Dragon Queen and why they should support the Lannister crown instead, promising Randyll Tarly the title of Warden of the South. In the Riverlands, Arya meets with Hot Pie, who tells her of Jon being named King in the North. She decides to return to Winterfell, and in the way she is briefly reunited with her long lost direwolf pet: Nymeria. At Winterfell, Jon Snow leaves for Dragonstone in hopes of getting support of Daenerys Targaryen against the threat of the White Walkers, leaving Sansa in charge. Shark advocate Simon genuinely loved it, but wouldn’t describe as ‘good’. Kobi had concerns about the possibly of an actual sharknado. Helen was not impressed not even with the David Hasselhoff cameo. Sadly it doesn’t pass the Bechdel test.
