In the documentary Growing up Gypsy, Stacey Dooley gets to know three young English Romany Gypsy women. Invited into the traditionally private community, Stacey discovers the complex balancing act the young women face growing up in one of Britain's most maligned ethnic minorities. She meets 23 year old Chantelle who prides herself in keeping with the ‘old' Gypsy values her granny Rita taught her and shares her ‘Gypsy Cleaning' videos on social media where she has nearly 400,000 followers on TikTok and 15 million likes on her page. Chantelle joined Kylie Pentelow to talk about her life, alongside Stacey Dooley. In this week's Women's Prize discussion, Clare McDonnell heard from two authors about the debut books they've had long-listed for this year's prestigious literary prize. Sanam Mahloudji's novel, The Persians, tells the story of the Valiat family from the perspective of five women from 1940s Iran into a splintered 2000s. And Labour MP Yuan Yang's non-fiction book, Private Revolutions, explores the lives of four women born in China in the 1980s and 90s during a time of rapid change in society.Since its release, the Netflix TV series Adolescence has caused widespread discussion about what's shaping our teenagers' lives. The four-part series follows the fallout from 13-year-old Jamie's arrest on suspicion of murdering his female classmate, Katie. The show is a critique of social media-boosted toxic masculinity and its role in the teenage experience. Clare discussed the issues with clinical psychologist, Dr Amani Milligan and Consultant Forensic Psychologist, Dr Ruth Tully.Do you enjoy a bit of gossip? The thrill of being the first to hear something and sharing it, or the irresistible urge to be let into the lives of others? What's the difference between idle gossip and hurtful criticism behind someone's back, do women gossip as much as men and can gossip be used to keep women safe? American journalist Kelsey McKinney joined Clare to discuss her new book, You Didn't Hear This From Me: Notes on the Art of Gossip.Technology journalist and author Lara Lewington asks how artificial intelligence can improve women's health, and what we are ready for it to do for us? From prevention and diagnostics to testing and tracking, we speak to female experts, scientists and practitioners. Her experts include Madhumita Murgia, AI Editor of the Financial Times, Nell Thornton, Improvement Fellow, The Health Foundation and Dr Ellie Cannon, a GP and author. This week we heard how victims and survivors of domestic abuse want the police to better protect them from perpetrators, but there's also a very practical and positive way some women have been trying to process their trauma to build a future for themselves. British boxer Lesley Sackey - who previously won gold at the EU Championships - is a survivor of an abusive relationship and now helps other women to gain confidence and move forward by getting into the boxing ring. She joined Claire, along with Olivia Culverhouse, who took part in Lesley's 10-week Fight Forward course.Presenter: Kylie Pentelow Producer: Annette Wells Editor: Sarah Crawley
Deaths by suicide among victims of domestic abuse in England and Wales have overtaken the number of people killed by an intimate partner, for a second year in a row. The figures are revealed in the annual national police report on domestic homicides published today, although police chiefs say the increase is due to improvements in recording, rather than a rise in the number of such cases. They've also said more perpetrators will be charged with manslaughter following their victims' deaths in future. Clare McDonnell talks to Phyllis Daly, whose daughter Jessica Laverack was 34 when she took her own life in 2018, and Hetti Barkworth-Nanton, Chair of the domestic violence charity Refuge. Amber Anning made history when just a few days ago she fought off a mid-race shove from her chief rival to become Great Britain's first ever women's 400m champion at the World Athletics Indoor Championships. She joins us to talk about her experience in Nanjing in China, and such a promising start to her professional career. We look at how the gig economy is impacting migrant women working in the UK, especially those in Ecommerce and social care. Clare's joined by director Laura Carriera, whose award-winning film On Falling explores the loneliness of a young Portuguese woman working as a picker in an online retailer's warehouse. We also hear from Dr Dora Olivia Vicol, Chief Executive of the Work Rights Centre, a charity supporting migrant workers, and ‘Rose' - who came to the UK to work in the care sector - shares her experience of being exploited and threatened by her employers. The race for the next UN Secretary-General - who will be appointed for five years in 2026 - has begun. Campaigners are fighting for a more transparent, fair and inclusive process to elect the world's top civil servant, and are demanding that the appointee finally be a woman. We hear from two of the people who are part of the push to make this happen - Maria Noel Leoni, Director of the GQUAL Campaign and Susana Malcorra, co-founder and President of Global Women Leaders Voices - about how the process works and why a woman has not been elected in the UN's 80-year history. Earlier we heard how victims and survivors of domestic abuse want the police to better protect them from perpetrators, but there's also a very practical and positive way some women have been trying to process their trauma to build a future for themselves. British boxer Lesley Sackey - who previously won gold at the EU Championships - is a survivor of an abusive relationship and now helps other women to gain confidence and move forward by getting into the boxing ring. She joins us along with Olivia Culverhouse, who took part in Lesley's 10-week Fight Forward course last year. Presenter: Clare McDonnell Producer: Sarah Jane Griffiths
“At what age should I stop achieving? At what age should I stop improving?” When most people hit their 50s, they might slow down, lean into comfort, and start looking forward to retirement. Not Stuart Warren Dansby. He did the opposite—he stepped into the ring. In this powerful episode of The RebelRebel Podcast, host Michael Dargie sits down with Stuart to talk about his journey into competitive fighting later in life, a path filled with punches, humility, and the relentless pursuit of personal growth. This episode is sponsored by my new book BRANDJITSU, helping you find, shape, and share your story with the world. Stuart shares his origin story—how a single humbling training session led him down a path of obsession with martial arts. Training alongside fighters half his age, Stuart pushed his limits physically and mentally, defying not only his age but also two severely damaged knees. His story is captured in the gripping documentary Taking the Fight, a film that chronicles his journey toward earning respect in the ring and within himself. The conversation dives deep into what it means to face your fears, push past your limits, and embrace pain as a catalyst for growth. Stuart reflects on the power of perseverance and the importance of showing up—not just for yourself, but for those around you who look to you as a source of inspiration. The bond between fighters, the thrill of testing one's spirit, and the beauty of being fully present in the moment are all explored in this honest and inspiring episode. Whether you're an aspiring fighter or simply seeking motivation to face your own challenges, Stuart's story will remind you that the fight is always worth it—and it's never too late to step into the ring. Cool Things Stuart Says “If you're not sore and you're not tired, then don't call yourself a fighter—and you'll never be a champion.” “At what age should I stop achieving? At what age should I stop improving?” “Every one of us has a fight—we all hold ourselves back. But we can all push through.” “You gotta want that. You gotta wrap your soul around it.” “Rise, grind, function, achieve—in gratitude.” Episode Highlights Stuart's late start into martial arts and fighting in his 50s. His journey from being humbled in his first training session to competing against fighters 30 years younger. Overcoming severe knee injuries and pushing beyond physical limitations. The making of Taking the Fight documentary—a nine-year journey. The role of mentors and coaches in personal development. The mental resilience needed to endure hits in the ring—and in life. The deeper bond formed through combat and mutual respect among fighters. Stuart's mantra: “Rise, grind, function, achieve—in gratitude.” Advice to rebels in waiting: Believe in yourself, work relentlessly, stay positive, and never stop learning. Sunday, May 7, 2023 – Eastertide Series: Story and Promise Scripture: Acts 7:55-60
The enemy wants you to give up your purpose and destiny. But you must fight back. Phillppians 3:12-1 4, “ Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” You are pressing into areas that will hold you captive in 2023. God is allowing some of this so you can aware of what the enemy could rob you of in 2023. The pressing reveals what you are made of. Get up from laziness and apathy and begin to start moving forward. Macabees had to fight back to take the temple and even in the little bit God created a miracle for expanse. This new anointing is coming forth because you are pressing into this high calling. We are birthing destiny Now in Jesus name. Harness this and bring legacy forth.
What do we do now that Roe v Wade got overturned? Today we continue our discussion with Fr. Pavone and Janet Morana about the issue of Life. We talk about the history of Roe and how it became synonymous with women's rights despite the lack of evidence that abortion supports women's health. The court ruling sent the issue back to the states and now is the time to fight more than ever to help turn the culture back toward an understanding and respect for every human life.Episode 42 SHOW HOSTS: Deacon Harold Burke Sivers Nick De La Torre Ellen Holmes Steeves LeBlanc SUPPORT our show: theprodigallife.com SHOW PAGE: https://www.awakencatholic.org/the-prodigal-life/roe-v-wade-and-the-fight-forward-w-fr-pavone-and-janet-morana THE AWAKEN APP: http://theawakenapp.io Bring the AWAKEN MISSION to your parish! https://www.awakencatholic.church/mission

DEI (diversity - equity - inclusion) efforts are critically essential in creating a world where all of us have EQUALITY in terms of opportunity. EQUITY doesn't mean equal . . . EQUITY mean reaching back to the person who has been held back the most and pulling them to the front so they have an EQUAL chance at opportunity. In this podcast, Dr. Vanessa and Aneatria drop some wisdom bombs about impact versus activity, delve into what DEI means, and how we as white leaders can turn our seats of power into seats of change.

Do you ever tell yourself, "I'm not good enough," "It's my fault," "I'm alone" or "I'm worthless"? If so, you're not alone. Many other people struggle with those thoughts, even Christians! That's why Brenda Crouch wrote a new book called Fight Forward. In the book, she explains that every believer is a champion by God's design. You may know Brenda because she married Paul Jr., the late Paul and Jan Crouch's oldest son. I invited Brenda onto the "Strang Report" podcast to share her story of overcoming abuse and suffering as a child and into her adulthood. Those difficult experiences—and the lies she had to overcome as a result—drove her to write this book. She knows people need practical solutions to the difficult situations they face."God revealed to me through [an] ancestry test ... that in some of the history in the family, there was murder and abuses [of] varying degrees," she says. "Unfortunately, I was a victim of some of that abuse. When I was about 8 years old, my father sexually abused me. And it was during a very dark part of his life where he had really walked away from God, and I believe he was under a very demonic and dark oppression."Sadly, Brenda says, this experience twisted her identity. Her mother didn't know about the abuse, and Brenda pushed down the trauma, hoping it wouldn't resurface. But she was wrong. The effects of the abuse came out more in her adult years, she says."I took this kind of conflicting message of performance and legalism and wanting to please God and wanting to please all the people around me and meeting my parents' love and affirmation and then having this twisted identity of shame that I was rooted in—and self-hatred," she says. She entered relationships as an adult that she classifies as abusive, but as terrible as they were, she says God used them to "remove the mask of performance, the mask of trying to be good enough."I was so encouraged by the story of Ruth and how [she] came out of Moab," she says. "The whole identity of Moab came out of incest. And so what a powerful example for me as God began to walk out and rescue me from the roots of the iniquity within my bloodline, but then to cut me free from those things and give me a new identity in Him. So the Jesus that I was taught about and that I had believed in and witnessed to others all my life was suddenly a Jesus who would reach into my pit, into my taboo place and become my experience."Brenda believes this message can speak to more than just those who have come out of abusive homes and relationships. She sees a scary unraveling throughout culture, including in the political arena, the education system and even the church. She sees a movement rising up within culture full of people who are tired of not being heard."I believe that God is listening to the voice He has seen," she says. "He is actually in this stirring of the pot and the shaking that's taking place. He's using what the enemy means for harm to us for our good. I believe that He will use some of the most unexpected and unqualified people to reveal His glory in this hour."That's why Brenda is passionate about telling her story. She wants people to know they don't have to remain in their identity as victims. Christ can restore anyone's story, no matter how full it is of sin or abuse or shame."These victims whom God wants to heal are not really intended to stay victims," she says. "They will be the warriors of tomorrow, the healers of a very broken and very hurting culture."I hope you take Brenda's words to heart, especially if you've been struggling with a sense of shame and victimhood. Be sure to listen to my full interview with Brenda, where we dive deep into how God can heal the broken souls in America through His grace.
