In this episode I am joined by Paul Finch, Chief Operating Officer at Kao Data. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling.(17) She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.”(18) She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her. 1.The Slave Girl - Physical Restoration (Acts 16:19-24 NIV) When her owners realized that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities.(20) They brought them before the magistrates and said, “These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar (21) by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice.”(22) The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods. (23) After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully.(24) When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted, “Don't harm yourself! We are all here!”This story actually begins a few verses before this. In Acts 16:16-24 it says, “Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.” She kept this up for many days. They have been beaten with rods and are now chained up in prison. You would think after a day like that they would feel defeated. You would think that they would be questioning God and asking Him why they have to suffer so much when they are just doing what He asked them to do. You might also think that they were passed out in pain and sleeping. Is this what they were doing? No, the verse says it was midnight and they were still praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. This is something that always amazes me about the apostles and other believers in the the faith, such as the Saints. I am always amazed by their strength. I know that God underwent extreme suffering in the 24 hours before He was crucified. He sweat drops of blood, if that is not suffering, I don't know what is. And yet, I think we can down play it sometimes and think well, He is fully God and fully human, so of course He can withstand it, He is God. However, there are countless other Saints who have gone through extreme suffering and have done it with joy. Paul & Silas had just been beaten with rods, and yet they were not questioning God, they were praising and singing to Him. This is something that I think we can hear sometimes and not pause and think about how truly amazing it is. I don't know if we glaze over it because we don't understand it, or because don't think we are capable of it. I don't know the reason, but I wanted to pause and take a moment to recognize how remarkable these two are for the way they endured their suffering. We could all learn a lot from them and how they lived not only when times were good, but more so when times were tough. The verse says that at midnight, while they were praying and praising, they were set free. The door opened and their chains came loose. What strikes me about this verse is that they were set free and yet they did not leave. They stayed there until morning when the guard woke up. What I hear the Lord saying to me about this verse is that everything He does is for His glory and the good of His kingdom. If Paul & Silas would have left at midnight, they could have escaped. However, it would not have been known how they escaped. People could have said that someone broke in and freed them. God would not have gotten the Glory. However, by waiting until morning, not only did they convert the guard and his whole house to believers, but they were set free and did not have to worry about being caught for escaping.Sometimes the things we are going through or the things others are going through make no sense to us. If we had been there in that jail cell, it would have made no sense to us that when they were freed they didn't leave the cell. I can't imagine sitting in that cell and just waiting for the jailer to wake up when we could have escaped and been hours away by the time the jailer woke up. Luckily Paul and Silas were good at listening to the Lord and trusting in Him. They were not scared in that jail cell. They were praising the Lord and trusting that the Lord would get them out of the situation. They were patient and waited on the Lord's timing and by doing so they saved the jailer and his whole family. Do you see how if the apostles left at midnight, they would have escaped and would have been free? Do you also see that they did not leave at midnight and yet they were still free? We never know how God will work things out for us. Sometimes we can only see things in black and white. We can see only two choices. For instance, we could see that if we left the cell when the door was opened, then we would be free. However, if we stay there then we would be stuck in jail forever. Sometimes we are so angry, upset, scared, afraid, we can't see all the possibilities. We only see the two. Sometimes we may not see all the options because we have a limited amount of information, whereas, God has all the information He would ever need. It seems as though the apostles waited for God to tell them what to do next. They trusted that even though they didn't know what would happen next, God would take care of it. This may be the same in some circumstances in our lives too. We may not understand why God is asking us to wait it out a little longer. We know God can save us now and we don't understand why He isn't. We don't understand why we are going though all of this in the first place. Maybe God is using this thing you are going through to save someone else. Maybe through watching your strength in the face of your situation someone has decided to give God a try. Maybe after watching the way you were saved from your circumstances someone else has decided to be saved as well. We don't know what God's plan is or why He does the things that He does. There is one thing that we can be sure of and that is that God has a plan and He has a reason for everything. God can use all things for His glory. We may think that some things are a coincidence. However, if you look back over the last 5 or 10 years of your life I bet you will see how those things you felt were coincidences were actually things that God timed out perfectly for a specific reason. It is amazing to me how detailed God's plan is. He has every tiny detailed planned out. The next time we get tired of waiting for our suffering to be over, maybe we can remember this verse and we can pray and praise him even when we are struggling. We can remember that if He has not saved us yet, it is for a reason and that there is a greater good that is going to come from our situation. I know that doesn't always make it easier for us when we are in the moment. However, I felt God wanted me to share with you that even when we don't know His plan and we don't understand his plan, we should still know that He has a plan and it is for our good and the good of his whole church. Dear Heavenly Father, I ask that you bless all those listening to this episode today. We ask that you give us the strength of Paul and Silas when we are suffering. Lord we ask that you give us the strength and the wisdom to pray and sing praises to you when we are suffering. Help us to know that you have a plan even when we don't see it or understand it. Help us to know that we are never suffering in vain. You will always use our suffering for your glory. We love you Lord and we thank you for all that you do for us. When God is Big... is a sermon series examining what happens when you have a bigger vision of God. When God is Big...Chains are Broken: This world can be really tough. And it can be so tempting to turn to certain substances or behaviors to try and escape from reality. Whether it's binge drinking or endless social media scrolling, our tendency toward compulsive overconsumption is unhelpful and frankly destructive. However, there is hope in Jesus for freedom and healing. Recorded on Oct 24, 2021, on Acts 16:16-34, by Pastor David Parks. Sermon Transcript All year, we're focusing on The Greatness of God. And today, we're finishing a sermon series called When God is Big… In this series, we've considered how a bigger view of God changes everything, including how we live out our values and how we might deal with our various struggles. Well, today, we get to address one of the main issues that people in our culture struggle with today, which is the struggle of addiction. And the first question is, is this really a problem for us? Undoubtedly, you've probably heard of the opioid crisis, but for many of us, that issue might feel far away. Is this something we need to be paying attention to as followers of Jesus today, well, I think the answer is yes. According to the CDC, Wisconsin has the second-highest rate of binge drinking in the country and is almost tied for first place. A CDC study from 2015 showed that almost 25% of adults in WI (that is, 1 out of 4) had engaged in binge drinking in the past 30 days. And I believe the trauma of the Covid-19 pandemic and all the other social and political turmoil of the past few years have only accelerated this trend. It might be more like 1 out of 3 adults or even higher today. Now I get it. In this world, there seems to be stress and various threats coming from all directions. So it's no wonder to me that more and more, people are falling into addictive patterns of behavior or turning to substances to try and escape reality for a time. That's understandable. But it's not just alcohol that's a problem for us, is it? In her book, Dopamine Nation, Dr. Anna Lembke repeatedly refers to addictive behavior as ‘compulsive overconsumption,' and that phrase was helpful to me to better understand what's going on here. However, by that definition, almost everyone may wrestle with a certain degree of addictive behavior. Just think about the phrase ‘compulsive overconsumption' and think about your relationship with your phone or your social media feed or with gaming or even your TV. We don't even watch TV anymore, we binge-watch. Think of the struggle that so many people have with pornography or merely of watching the news. We know these things aren't really helpful or healthy for us, and some are downright destructive patterns of behavior — but we just can't stop. So given the difficulty and trauma of this broken world, are we hopelessly bound by these substances/behaviors, or is it possible to find freedom from compulsive overconsumption? The answer is yes, freedom is possible, healing is possible in Christ. In fact, one of the great benefits of the gospel of Jesus is its power to break the various chains that bind us in life. But how does this work? Well, if you have a Bible/app, please open to Acts 16, starting with v.16. My goal today is to show you that when God is big, chains are broken. Let's start with v.16. They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city. One of these is the God given relationship ordained between parents and their children. Another he addresses is that between the believer and those outside the Body of Christ. He picks for the latter from our point of views the rarely found relationship between slaves and their masters. What is true in that extreme case can easily be applied to many human relationships. Satan has always sought to harm and destroy those relationships, whatever the dispensational plan of God. Finally Paul defines the spiritual warfare every believer is part of by necessity. Indeed, our warfare is spiritual and heavenly and not essentially of this earth however may appear.
This week: Paul's return to Jerusalem (Acts 21:1-23:11). Finally Paul makes his way back to Jerusalem, only to find that he is a wanted man. As he makes his defense before the mob and the court, Paul recalls three encounters with Jesus, each of which lead to a decision point for him. Jesus calls on Paul, as he does all those who want a relationship with God, to surrender his life, his direction, and his future.

Now you can leave. Go in peace.” 37 But Paul said to the officers: “They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out.” 38 The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed. 39 They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city.

It is increasingly difficult in today’s word to be a good man. In the eyes of many in our culture, manhood is in a tailspin. Technology that replaces labor, the feminist movement and other social trends has produced a steady decline of the view of true manhood. The media and our culture engage in a subtle undermining of reputation of men. Manhood is under attack. Being a true man in our world is a difficult job. It requires courage and determination, because being a true Godly man is to go against our culture. Men in our culture are searching for what it means to be a man because that definition has been blurred and changed by many years of assault by the enemy. As Godly men, we look to the bible for God’s definition of what it means to be a man. Our text contains four concepts that define what it means to be a man. First Paul said to watch. He means to be alert, awake and concerned about where we are at all times. There are many enemies who will come at us. Paul was reminding us to be ever vigilant to remain focused on the most important things in life. We must watch ourselves; our minds and what we allow to come into our mind. When secondary issues become more important than the primary issues, we are in trouble. Our walk with God is chief among these primary issues. We must watch over our house. We must watch what comes in and what we allow to go on in our house. We have to watch against the subtle things that creep in; the temptation that come daily. A true man is one that is watchful about what truly matters. Second Paul said that we must stand fast in the faith. To stand fast is a military term meaning to keep rank; to stay in step with the other soldiers. To be a true man, we have to learn how to keep in step and continue on in the face of adversity. Third Paul reminds us to act like men. It means be courageous in the face of battle. Do not flinch or turn away when facing the enemy. It speaks of a mature stability. God is calling for men who will hold on when it is easier to give up. FInally Paul encourages us to be strong. This is not physical strength, but spiritual strength. What makes a man strong is when he can look at temptation and say no and walk away from it. To become strong in spirit is to become strong in life. We have to be strong enough to close the door that will lead us down the path to where we do not need to be. True manhood is not defined by our culture. God defines true manhood and that has not changed. It take courage for men to be Godly men.
As we come to the end of another year, we tend to look both back and ahead. For some the past year has not been the best. Of all of God’s creation, only humans are conscious of time. Our lives are controlled by time and we are conscious that time has a meaning and a purpose. Every day that comes to the cow or the bird is just like the one before. But you and I know about time and are usually looking forward to something new. God’s purpose for our life is not in the past. In these times of reflection, there are many things that can affect our thinking. Bro. Hughes notes that tonight is a good night to let some things go and to focus our mind and thinking to properly frame our approach to the new year. Paul writing to the church at Philippi explains that he is not perfect. Of all the people we read about in the bible, Paul stands out for his faith and his relationship with God. But he says here that he has not reached the place that he needed to be. No matter how old we are, there is something that God can do in us and through us to serve His purpose. There are three things in this text that we need to embrace and have in our thinking as we look to the new year. First Paul says that he had not yet obtained what it is that God had for him. He was still trying to understand that thing that had reached out and grabbed him those many years ago on his way to Damascus. It is critical that we continue to search for God’s purpose in our life. Secondly, Paul talks about forgetting about those things in the past. The word used in the Greek means “to let go” and to “move away.” God said it is time to let go of some stuff that is behind us. When Paul made that statement he was talking about things that were both good and bad. No matter how much he had done in the past, it was in the past and he had to let it go. No matter how good it was in the past, there are better things in the future. Good or bad, we cannot live in the past. Our life shouldn’t be defined by what was, but by what will be. Weather good or bad, let it go and look to the future. Finally Paul says that he is reaching out. The word used is that of an athlete reaching for the finish line. He was not satisfied with what he had, and was reaching for more. As the year draws to a close, it is time to reflect on what has happened, but more importantly, to plan to reach for more in the year to come.
Our text is a intimate personal letter to the early church at Colossi. Paul tells them that he was concerned about the environment in Colossi and things that were being added to the church that were not proper. They had fallen into a pattern of teaching that there are things needed in addition to Jesus. Paul's conviction of the preeminence of Christ is evident in this letter. Paul prays that they focus on the priorities according to God, not what the world held out as priorities. Paul prays that they will shun those outside voices and focus on the laws and priorities of God. He says that if they were to receive the word of God, that they could lead a life that was pleasing to God. Bro. Hughes studies the text and identifies seven traits that are pleasing to God. The first is found in verse 4 where he references faith in Christ Jesus. We must have faith in God in order to be pleasing to God. The cornerstone of a life pleasing to God is faith. Secondly Paul references their love for their fellow men. It doesn't matter how much we love God if we do not love one another. It is a love not because they deserve it, but because they need it. Paul goes on to mention that a life the bears fruit is pleasing to God. Fruit is evidence that we are what we say we are. A tree is known by it's fruit. We know that an apple tree is an apple tree because we see apples. We know that a christian is a christian because of the fruits of the spirit: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. The forth point was that they grew in the knowledge of God. The paid attention to things that happened in life and how God worked them out. They read and studied the word. The took the word of God into their hearts. Next, Paul talks about endurance. The two words patience and long suffering are often interchangeable, but here they are not. Patience is translated as endurance. It pleases God that when life comes against us, that we face that without complaining and becoming overwhelmed. Long suffering references our relationship with people. It is the quality of sprite that allows us to bear people that are contrary and irritable toward us. It is the concept of loving people despite of their being human. Finally Paul talks about a spirit of thanksgiving; a attitude of gratitude. These seven things mark a life that is pleasing to God.
Actes 16: 16 Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.” 18 She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her. 19 When her owners realized that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities. 20 They brought them before the magistrates and said, “These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar21 by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice.” 22 The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods. 23 After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. 24 When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. 25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. How do we respond to a discouraging situation? What do we feel when things do not work out? Many would just walk away. Giving up is not characteristic of Christians. As a follower of Jesus we expect the best. Giving up does not fit. We have all been faced with challenging situations where where we want to quit. Bro. Hilton gives us examples from the Apostle Paul's life that teach us a simple lesson: Don't Quit. We will be tested. Everything in us will cry out to quit. What was it that Paul knew that kept him in his faith? First was his awareness that God was with him. Most would say that God is with us, but do we claim Him when times are tough? Do we remind ourselves during these times, that almighty God is with us. His word promises that He will never leave or forsake us. His word is either all true, or none of it is true. He is with us. Many will give up right before they win the victory. As a Christian, if we give up, we are really saying that we don't trust God. In Corinthians 11, Paul recounts many of the trials in his life. Through all of this, Paul was aware that Jesus was with him. Secondly, Paul experienced the strength of God in his life. Historians tell us that Paul was not a big or powerful man, but he knew the strength of God in his life. He was aware of the strength that God released in him. No matter what we face, we have that same strength in us. The word of God says it, we must claim it. The bible tells us that He will call us to face anything that He will not give us the strength to endure. When we put our trust in the word of God, we will begin to feel that strength. If we neglect the word of God, we will continue to struggle. We have to know God. The Word is God, so to know God, we must know the Word. The third thing Paul knew was the assurance of God's will. Nothing is more comforting than knowing that we are in God's will. Paul knew exactly where he was in life and what God was up to in his life. Finally Paul had an overflowing joy that filled his soul. This helped him to make it through the tough times. By the time he got to the point in his life where he is writing our texts, Paul had a thousand reasons to quit and give up. However because of these four things, Paul was able to go on and see the wonders that God had waiting for him. Paul's life teaches us a powerful lesson: Don't Quit.
Rodney Mississippi sits near the Mississippi river between St. Louis and New Orleans. It missed becoming the capital of Mississippi by three votes, but today it is on the verge of being a ghost time. In the late 1800s it was a busy seaport. At the time it was a cultural center with shopping, banking and Broadway shows. It was not only a town of growth and prosperity; it was a town of vision. They built what would become Alcorn State University. It is a ghost town today because the mighty Mississippi river changed coarse and the town is no longer located on the river, but near the river. The leadership of the town did nothing when the river began to change course and did not expand their town to match the path of the river. Last Wednesday, Bro. Hughes used a vision from Ezekiel to describe the flow of God’s spirit as being a mighty river. When the spirit of God begins to move, we must be prepared to move with it lest we become like Rodney Mississippi and be only a ghost of what might have been. In tonight’s text, Paul admonishes the church at Ephesus about the difficult times in which they lived. Paul said that they would be known as evil days. He said that even in the difficult times there are great opportunities. The child of God who is connected to the spirit will realizes that challenging times are the best opportunity show the power of God. Bro. Hughes notes three things from our text. Paul talks about awakening. The danger of our time is that the people will go to sleep spiritually. People go to sleep because they get to comfortable, or too warm, or too full. If we are not careful we can become so content on a pew that we sleep through the best parts of our life. Our conscious has gone to sleep. The news is no longer shocking to us. Our values and lifestyle are under such an assault that we become numb to the decay of our society. Paul said that there would be a danger of slippage. There are reasons why the church has taken a stand on values, standards and beliefs. Bro. Hughes asks why we are allowing them to slip away from us? We no longer ask, “Is this really what we should be doing?” Finally Paul tells us that sloppiness can be a danger. We should not be sloppy in our relationship with God. There is nothing about God that is sloppy, so why would we not want to give God our very best.
There are some things about life that when we get them right, everything else works like it is supposed to. Conversely, if we get them wrong, nothing falls into place. Bro. Hughes shares a story about how he assembled something. He had in his mind how is should work, but he decided to follow the instructions provided. While doing this, he discovered that there was a process that the manufacturer had laid out. Had he followed his intuition, he may have gotten the piece assembled, but by following the instructions the assembly was easier and worked better than if he had done it without following the directions. Our scripture text is one of the keys to life. There is a principle here that if we get it right will make a lot of other things right. Salvation should be everyone’s goal. There are dangers and obstacles along this earthly journey that can cause us to get off track and to miss out on that salvation. Paul outlines three things that we must do to avoid falling short and not see the Lord. Our text begins with following peace. In the Greek, the word peace means to pursue; to diligently strive after peace with all men. This means that we must work at getting along with people. The second part of verse 14 involves holiness. Holiness describes a relationship with God. It will affect every part of life. It is not an outdated way of living. It is a relationship between God and us. God is clean and pure, and that if we are going to have a relationship with Him, we must also be clean and pure in everything we do. Holiness is a spirit. For far too many, holiness is something that they wear, not something that they are. In verses 15-16, Paul talks about missing grace’s work. The only way for this to happen is for a person to become disconnected or distracted. If we do not get the holiness and peace part right, we may become distracted or disconnected and risk missing out on the grace that God offers. Paul mentions bitterness. If we don’t get the holiness and peace part, it is easy to become bitter. There are a lot of broken relationships due to bitterness. Finally Paul says we must be aware of the possibility of falling into an immoral or un-holy life. Most of us hear that and say no way. Bro. Hughes offers the example of Abraham. Abraham was called a friend of God, but even this great man of faith struggled with an unconsecrated life.
Paul writing to the early church contrasts the life that was and the life that is resurrected. The life that was dead in sin and the life that lives in a newness of the resurrection. The message of the death, burial and resurrection is a fundamental message. Paul describes how we go about living this new life. The first is a description of what has transpired so that there is no question that we died to one way of life, and that we rose to walk in a newness of life. That knowledge is essential if we are to enjoy the beauty of living for God. The second thing Paul talks about begins in verse 11. The first part of the chapter is how God sees the death, burial and resurrection in our lives. Beginning in verse 11, Paul tells us how WE need to view it. He says that we need to view ourselves as dead unto sin. It does not matter how much we know. If we do not live that knowledge, it is all worthless. When we realize that we have died to sin, we are no longer controlled by sin. Sin will always be there, but we are not controlled by it any longer. Once we live that way, it changes our thinking. We are not what we once were. That old way has died. Finally Paul tells us that we must yield ourselves to God.

He then shares a story about a volunteer experience at a children's bereavement camp in New Jersey. While volunteering there, he shared a special connection with a little boy whose family survived 911. The impact of this experience later inspired him to start an overnight bereavement camp in Long Island.Segment 2 The second segment begins as a continuation of the conversation in segment 1. Paul discusses his observation for a need for an overnight bereavement camp in Long Island; although Long Island did offer bereavement camps, at the time, none of them provided overnight services. Paul found that overnight camps allowed for opportunities for more bonding and connections to form between children and camp staff. Paul discusses the unique services offered by his non-profit organization which also includes services for grieving parents such as support groups. Segment 3 This segment begins with a discussion about volunteer work within the organization. Paul describes the stringent volunteer recruitment process which ensures the camp children are in the best possible hands. He then discusses the one-on-one buddy system in which volunteers work one-on-one with camp children.Next, Paul discusses how he has created and sustained his nonprofit organization. Pro-Bono services have helped him to get the organization started and his organization is supported by grants, donations, and sponsorships. Finally, Paul discusses how camp services and processes are adapted to boost the wellbeing of the children involved.Segment 4In the final segment, Paul highlights his organization's goal to fill in the gaps in bereaved services offered in Long Island. Paul also discusses the organization's need for male volunteers and support group leaders. His team offers education and training for dealing with grief so that volunteers are prepared to serve in their designated role.
