In this electrifying 67th episode of *The Metal Maniacs Podcast, hosts Jay Ingersoll and Modd sit down with one of Michigan's most dynamic and beloved metal bands, *Heartsick*. Formerly known as *Know Lyfe*, the band has been a cornerstone of the Midwest metal scene for nearly 20 years. Lead vocalist Alfonso Civile joins the show to share the story of the band's evolution, their metal influences, and what it means to carry the torch for heavy music. With albums like their self-titled debut *Heartsick* (2015) and the powerful follow-up *Sleep Cycles* (2019), the band has continued to push the boundaries of metalcore. Songs like "Hate Anthem" and "Shadow" capture both the aggressive and atmospheric sides of the band, while tracks like "Pancha" and "Bone Fragments" reveal their ability to weave melody and ferocity together. One of the most intriguing aspects of *Heartsick* is their songwriting process, which Alfonso dives deep into during the episode. He explains how each member brings their unique musical perspective to the table, contributing to a cohesive yet diverse sound that keeps fans hooked. From the gut-punch heaviness of their earlier works to the melodic introspection of more recent tracks, the band always strives to create songs that resonate on multiple levels. Guitarist Jerred Pruneau's innovative approach, influenced by players like Tom Morello and Daron Malakian, adds a distinctive flavor to the band's sound, while bassist Waylon Fox brings his own flair from influences like *Poison the Well* and *Converge*. Jake Bryan's drumming, shaped by both Latin roots and extreme metal influences like *Opeth* and *Dimmu Borgir*, keeps the band's rhythms tight and dynamic. Alfonso shares insights into his life beyond music, giving listeners a glimpse into his world of Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. As a dedicated practitioner and instructor, he draws parallels between the discipline of martial arts and the intensity of performing metal. He speaks candidly about how his training has influenced his mindset, both on and off stage. Of course, no episode would be complete without some wild touring stories. Alfonso and the hosts reminisce about the highs and lows of playing shows across the country. From unforgettable gigs to less-than-ideal experiences, the road has provided countless memories that have shaped the band. Looking to the future, Alfonso teases upcoming projects for *Heartsick*. Fans can expect more music, more tours, and more of the unrelenting energy that has made them a staple of the Midwest metal scene. With new singles like "Eight Years" and "Sadness" capturing the attention of metalheads across the globe, the band shows no signs of slowing down. At its core, this episode is a celebration of the passion and hard work that drives *Heartsick*. Alfonso talks about what keeps him going after nearly two decades in the industry—how the connection with fans and the thrill of performing live continue to fuel the fire. From their early days as *Know Lyfe* to their current status as *Heartsick*, this band embodies the DIY ethic and never-say-die attitude that defines heavy metal. Check out *Heartsick's* full discography on [Bandcamp] (https://heartsickband.bandcamp.com/music) and visit their official site [here] https://heartsick.us/ for updates on new music and upcoming tours. If you're a fan of heavy, melodic, and intense music, this episode is a must-listen. Join us as we go behind the scenes with *Heartsick* and get ready for an epic discussion of all things metal! Today we remember Al Hamme, celebrate his life, and lament his passing. A mentor to co-host Bill Carter, he was a co-founder of Bill's Presbybop Quartet. Co-host Jeff Kellam also enjoyed a great friendship with Al, stretching back almost sixty years. For over thirty years, he has been a strong advocate of jazz as an expression of the spiritual life.A virtuoso woodwind artist, Al was an extraordinary teacher. His performing resume reads like a Who's Who in the jazz world. So does the listing of the musicians that he taught and influenced. We celebrate his good life and we draw on the resources of jazz as a way of saying goodbye – and thank you. We're joined by Jessie Stephens, writer and author of Heartsick. In this conversation, we unpack why heartbreak is a form of grief that doesn't get as much airtime but is just as valid. We talk about how a broken heart impacts us, how to cope with the intense pain, what heartache has taught her and how to support someone grieving a relationship.Grab a copy of Jessie's incredible book, Heartsick, here.Connect with usBuy our book Good Mourning: Honest Conversations About Grief and Loss, here: linktr.ee/goodmourningpodcastCheck out our affirmation cards for grief and loss at www.goodmourning.com.auFollow us on Instagram at @goodmourningpodcast Hosted on Acast. Jessie is so real. Something from when I first met her on an IG Live stuck with me. She said… I like me. We went deeper into what that really looks like day to day, what to do when we don't feel that way. How coming back to our values matter. How being fulfilled and satisfied might be more nourishing and healthy than being successful. How her book Heartsick normalizes and welcomes what it is to be human… messy, chaotic and painful as well as the joyful and savoring the simple bliss of laughing on the couch together with your partner. What a breath of fresh air this woman is. Enjoy
Go to www.jasondemmon.com! Jason Demmon and I go back to his Michigan State University days (I was a townie). Jason talks about growing up with music, how music got him into college, gigging, composing music and sound production for film and... Getting testicular cancer! (Spoiler: he's now cancer free!) Through a few twists and turns in his healing process, he found great relief through cannabis, which led him to seek a career in the professional field of medicinal cannabis. We met through music as kids and, years later, reconnected as adults through some of the same musicians. Speaking of, shoutout to Heartsick, a fantastic band from Lansing, MI, that's been killing it for roughly two decades. Check out some a few band member appearances on earlier episodes of the show (#4, #20, #72)! Wondering about the podcast ad at the beginning? It's for my friends at Threads Podcast: Life Unfiltered. We're regulars on one another's podcasts, so we're giving each other a little support. No money changing hands. Just some creatives looking for a win-win. Check them out; they're good people.
Welcome back to the Hut. The Gnome and The Hater are here once again to bring you another banger of an episode. In this episode, the guys are interviewing another band. Alfonso, the lead vocalist of the band Heartsick, joined us on the Hut. They hail from Lansing, Michigan, and are bringing a killer metal sound. We discussed their video to Sirius XM to try and get some airtime, life in music, and how martial arts can apply to everyday life; even being in a band. We also touch on the future of Heartsick, their Eps, and potential new albums. Lastly, we bring up their winning a spot in the Blue Ridge Rock Festival contest. Another great interview and another great band for you to go check out after the end of the episode. Before we return with recs we plug Heartsick's newest single, “Event Horizon”. After the song clip, the boys return for another round of recommendations for the Spotify playlist (make sure to check the link below). As always, thanks for listening. This was taken from a livestream we on did on our various socials after a weekend of Heartsick almost winning a slot on this years Furnace Fest. Over the course of the two days of that competition we saw the band almost pull out another win for them to have the opportunity to play another legendary fest, only to have the whole experienced marred by the gatekeeping nature of the fans of that fest, who at times would say the band didn't belong, weren't "hardcore enough" and even banding together with other fans/bands just so Heartsick didn't win. This "outsiders not welcome" mentality reminded me of how it goes against the ethos of hardcore and metal, which is about community and belonging when you don't fit in elsewhere, but how this mindset is really how the culture has always been. Join Alfonso and I as we talk about this experience, how it's sadly on par with a lot of experiences Alfonso has had being in a band as a POC, how representing and bringing in different cultures into their music has lead to the bands unique sound and a lot more in this in depth conversation about acceptance, community and finding your voice through hardcore music. In today's Books with Hooks, Carly and CeCe discuss the target audience for a coming of age novel; the pitfalls of the early 2000s as a setting; the importance of your major dramatic question in a query; the issues with setting your novel up as part of a duology or series; and writing 'leading' dialogue. After which CeCe chats with Jessie Stephens, author of Heartsick: Three Stories About Love, Pain, and What Happens In Between about what made her proposal successful; how Jessie's background in media helped with publishing her book; the tenuous connection between having a large following on social media and selling copies; publishing without an agent and the pros of having one now; the impressions of the offer Jessie got for her first book; the ways in which she was naïve when she began writing; and Jessie's new book. Alfonso and the guys from Heartsick, a hard rocking band from Lansing, Michigan, are old friends of mine. On top of being an incredible group both musically and as live performers, that's why I'm happy to support them ahead of their next festival performance. See, last year they cause such a ruckus amongst the crowd on the Lookout Stage the organizers asked them not only to come back this year, but to open the show on SATURDAY JULY 16 on the Main Stage. Alfonso talks about how they got involved with the festival and where the energy for their insane live shows (they have all been known to puke after a show...) comes from.
