We loved getting to know Kelsi and Ryan and to have an opportunity to hear their hearts for helping others navigate through loss and grief. There are principles throughout their story that can be applied to any season of life. The Cole family is a beautiful trio in their photo, but behind the scenes, they hold a story of tremendous loss, resilience, and faith. Their journey together began in 2010 with a shared desire for a Godly marriage. Through the trials of miscarriage and stillbirth, they discovered the necessity of continually leaning into Jesus. Now, through their work at Foreknown Ministries, Kelsi and Ryan create, coach, and connect people to Jesus after pregnancy and infant loss. They know that it's only through Jesus that they are still married and help others see the Light in difficult situations. Malcolm Clemens Young Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, CA 2D87 Christmas Eve (Proper 1) 7:30 p.m. Eucharist Sunday 24 December 2023 Isaiah 9:2-7 Psalm 96:1-4, 11-13 Titus 2:11-14 Luke 2:1-20   “Do not be afraid; for see – I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people” (Lk. 2)   “We stand with one hand on the door looking into another world, / That is this world.” The farmer poet Wendell Berry (1934-) wrote these words about Christmas in a poem called “Remembering that It Happened Once.” [1] Here's the whole poem.   “Remembering that it happened once, / We cannot turn away the thought, / As we go out, cold, to our barns / Toward the long night's end, that we / Ourselves are living in the world / It happened in when it first happened, / That we ourselves, opening a stall / (A latch thrown open countless times / Before), might find them breathing there, /”   “Foreknown: the Child bedded in straw, / The mother kneeling over Him, / The husband standing in belief / He scarcely can believe, in light / That lights them from no source we see, / An April morning's light, the air / Around them joyful as a choir. / We stand with one hand on the door, / Looking into another world / That is this world, the pale daylight / Coming just as before, our chores / To do, the cattle all awake, / Our own white frozen breath hanging / In front of us; and we are here / As we have never been before, / Sighted as not before, our place / Holy, although we knew it not.” [2]   On Christmas Eve we stand between worlds. And for a moment, if we pay attention, we see our place as holy. We do not always experience our life this way. We inhabit a confusing world full of terror and distraction. These days wars in the Middle East, Ukraine and Africa cast a long shadow over the human family. Every year we become even more aware that our indifference is endangering the planet itself.   Other forms of sadness threaten to overcome us. Perhaps you have been lying awake at night because you have a child who is in serious trouble. Or perhaps, you have suddenly found yourself alone in the world to face the storms of life without someone to lean on. Or perhaps some kind of addiction holds you in its grip, or you are looking back to brighter years that you know are gone forever and will never come back. [3]   To the shepherds, to all of us tonight the angel announces a sign. A young woman is having a baby called Emmanuel which means God with us. This is the message: we are not alone or abandoned. The sign shows that joy is at the heart of being alive. Because of this baby, the world is being turned upside down. Violence is not at the center of reality, love is. [4]   Seeing the world like this may sound easy, but there is a catch. In order to experience this joy we have to be satisfied with living in a mystery. This does not mean that we have to believe what is unbelievable, that we have to give up critical thinking, or that we are not allowed to have doubts. It's just that the infinite will not fit into our finite minds. And so our existence is made strange by the kind of creatures we are. We long for the infinite but can never really control or comprehend it.   In the way that a mother gives birth to her child, we become who we are by giving ourselves away. For me this is what makes being a parent such a transcendent experience. Taking care of our children, walking in the oak woodlands, reading stories at sunset after a warm bath, all this made joy an even more central part of my life. Joy is that experience of being called into existence as a kind of creature who is different than God and yet who has a share in the mystery of God. We are made for this delight. [5]   Our friend and Dean Emeritus Alan Jones used to remind us that in Christianity the, “things of God can be handled and held.” In fact, “[T]he things of God can be kissed and caressed.” He talks about how strange it is that Christ enters into history in order to offer us the gift of peace. And that for this reason the true Christ can never assume the shape of violence. The baby and her child are a sign of three great truths. First, the world is a gift. Second the nature of the gift is communion (for all people and the world). Third, this true communion celebrates diversity and difference. Let me say only a little more about each of these. [6]   1. The Gift. Ninety-nine years ago this week the astronomer Edwin Hubble announced the discovery of the first galaxy outside our own Milky Way. By 2019 we believed that there were 200 billion galaxies. Now after the New Horizon space probe we think there are 2 trillion galaxies. [7] This is the world we inhabit. This is the generosity of God.   One of my favorite Christmas moments happened years ago, after everyone went home from the midnight service. I turned off the lights and closed up my old church. In the cold, alone on that holy night with the stars, with trillions of worlds stretching across the heavens, I felt God with me, overwhelmed by the miracle that we exist. All of this beauty, everything that is good, is a gift from God. [8]   And this is the peculiarity and the scandal of our faith. It is not chiefly about big ideas or philosophical principles but a God who is particular. At Christmas we celebrate and take delight in the God who can be touched, who can be held as a baby. [9] At the Christmas pageant this morning we asked children what they wanted to pray for. A boy said, “For the fighting to stop.” Loud applause followed. A girl announced that she wanted her neutered cat to have kittens. Another prayed that a particular candidate would not be elected as president (also to enthusiastic applause). But the most beautiful thing of all was Sinclair our baby Jesus sitting on her father's lap giving us such joy.   2. Communion. I've been reading Jill Lepore's book These Truths, a one volume history of America. American history always fascinated me but there is so much that I missed. [10] She writes about the Emancipation Proclamation that freed enslaved Americans and what it felt like for them. “In South Carolina the proclamation was read out to the First South Carolina Volunteer Infantry, a regiment of former slaves. At its final lines, the soldiers began to sing, quietly at first, and then louder: My country ‘tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, Of thee I sing!”   She goes on, “American slavery had lasted for centuries. It had stolen the lives of millions and crushed the lives of millions more... It had poisoned a people and a nation. It had turned hearts to stone… The American odyssey had barely begun. From cabins and fields they left. Freed men and women didn't always head north.”   “They often went south or west, traveling hundreds of miles by foot, on horseback, by stage and by train, searching. They were husbands in search of wives, wives in search of children, mothers and fathers looking for children, children looking for parents, chasing word and rumors about where their loved ones had been sold, sale after sale, across the country. Some of their wanderings lasted years. They sought their own union, a union of their beloved.” This year at Christmas as I'm imagining the joy of those reunions, I'm reminded how we are made for communion.   3. Diversity. Finally let me say a short word about diversity. The two largest religious denominations in America do not permit women to be ordained as leaders of churches. This week Pope Francis gave permission for Roman Catholic priests to give same sex couples blessings in private. He said that these should not in any way look like marriage ceremonies. [11] In our church we have women, trans, gay and lesbian people serving at every level of ordained ministry. We believe that God is present when same sex couples get married here in church. I have experienced such a deep sense of joy at their ordinations and weddings. I wish every person could see it.   We are all different from each other. But this is not a problem. We should not feel threatened by this. We are not competing. There is not one of us that has gotten it all right. Our diversity is part of God's gift to us. We are one human family.   What happens when we do not receive the world, communion with each other and diversity as a gift? The theologian Martin Luther (1483-1546) says that we become incurvatus se, that is curved in on ourself. We refuse to be fully alive. We are cut off from each other and the very sources of what should be our greatest happiness. We become distanced from our true self. This is a kind of hell that we all experience in varying degrees. In this condition we become walled off from joy.   But tonight is holy. It is time to make peace with the mystery and come back home. For many years the famous religion scholar Huston Smith was a member of my grandfather's congregation in Massachusetts. He said that churches waiting for Christmas are like a child with her face pressed against the window on a cold winter night. Then she runs through the household saying, “Daddy's home. Daddy's home.”   Tonight we share this joy in our Christmas carols and in stories whose meaning can never be exhausted. The world is not made of atoms but of stories. Our stories are imperfect ways of expressing an unsayable encounter with the infinite God. Tonight we are here as we never have been before. There is joy at the very heart of being alive. As a mother gives birth to her child let us become who we are by giving our self away. Because in these 2 trillion galaxies, the things of God can be kissed and caressed. The world is a gift. The nature of that gift is communion. True communion celebrates diversity and difference. We stand with one hand on the door looking into another world…”

Certainty in Christ - Part 1: Foreknown and Predestined - Certainty in Christ

This message traces the flow of thought to the principle of certainty in Christ. It introduces the first emphasis, which is that all certainty derives from being chosen in Christ. It then shows how all who are chosen in Christ are foreknown and predestined in Christ. Certainty marks the purposes and promises of God. And all the promises of God find their “Yes” in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20). The Christian's hope for glory is exclusively anchored here—in Christ. Here, Paul grounds and explains the golden guarantee (8:28) as a certainty in and for Christ (8:29-30). While these verses have been rightly recognized as the golden chain of salvation, they point to much more. Christ occupies the central position in this unbreakable sequence of divine links. The guaranteed certainty of glory is emphatically in and for Christ, which is purposed to induce and fortify both hope and holiness in us.

“If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one's work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Messiah. For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart, for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God. For, ‘ALL FLESH IS LIKE GRASS, AND ALL ITS GLORY LIKE THE FLOWER OF GRASS. THE GRASS WITHERS, AND THE FLOWER FALLS OFF, BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURES FOREVER' [Isaiah 40:6-8]. And this is the word which was preached to you” (NASU).

Well, hey there! Hello hello to you! So glad you are here for this episode of TBNES, the podcast where we work at getting the promises of God into the people of God where they belong. Because if you believe what God has promised, guess what happens? Your thinking changes. And your behavior, as in your actual way of living, changes too. The way you look at people and circumstances and blessings and struggles - all of that changes too.   It's so important to mind what we think, to pay attention to not just what we say we believe, but what we truly believe, what we live by, what thoughts govern our decisions, our actions, our behaviors and our responses.  And via this podcast, we really do allow the Word of God to renew our minds and impact every aspect of our lives.   I'm Jan L. Burt and you're listening to TBNES, part of the Spark Network, now playing in the Edifi app. This is episode 97. Last week, in spite of losing my voice and really just struggling through the week to speak at a summit I was part of and working on the podcast, which involves a lot of talking which is hard to do when your voice goes bye-bye, but I just asked the Lord to make it not the worst and I just did the work and released episode 96. In that episode, we took a look at a few verses in Romans 8 as part of this current series, and we honed in on verse 28. Such a well known Bible verse, and one that brings basically light, like a bright spotlight, into the dark places in our lives. And that's how things can feel sometimes, ya know? Health diagnosis can feel like a really dark place. Job loss or maybe you're of the age where your parents are older, maybe they are no longer living. That can really be a dark place, I mean grief as a whole is just heavy darkness and there isn't really a fast forward button you can push, you can't jump ahead 15 seconds and then jump ahead a bit further. Nope. We each grieve in our own way, at our own pace, and it isn't always linear, this whole grief thing, is it? We go this way and then that way, from step one to step five and then back to step two. You have to just go through it. Not get through it, not put your head down, try to file it away somewhere and get so ultra busy with the things in life that can easily become busy busy busy, that's not healthy grief. Not get through it, not even really work through it, but be much with the Lord as you just go through it.    If I am going to deal with a Red Sea in my life, a Jordan River in my life, I really want to go through it holding the Lord's hand. I don't want to go around it, fly over it, and I only want to cross on a boat if the boat has Jesus there at the stern. If He is walking on a dry ground path through the sea, that is where I want to walk. That's my route if that's His route. If He is walking on top of the water, then I also want to be atop the waves because that's where my Jesus is and I want to be with Him, as in much with Him, every single day. And if He is in the boat, even asleep on a cushion, then I want to be in that boat with Him. When He says, “Cross to the other side, Jan” then that's that. And when He says, “Stay here on this shore for a while,” then that's that.    And this week, we get to look at three verses from Romans chapter 8, verses 29, 30 and 31.   Can I read those verses to you from the Amplified Bible today?    For those whom He foreknew (and loved and chose beforehand), He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son (and ultimately share in His complete sanctification), so that He would be the firstborn (the most beloved and honored) among many believers.  And those who He predestined, He also called; and those whom He called, He also justified (declared free of the guilt of sin); and those whom He justified, He also glorified (raising them to a heavenly dignity). What then shall we say to all these things? If God is for us, who can be (successful) against us?   Wooo! Wow. Did you hear that?   So right on the heels of Romans 8:28, we read these three incredible verses.  As we talk through these verses, bit by bit, grabbing all the promises we find therein, let's start back in verse 28 for one sec. We know with great confidence that God who is deeply concerned about us causes all (not some, but all) things to work together as part of His plan for good for those of us who love Him and are called according to His plan and purpose.    For those whom He foreknew (hey, just don't forget that he knows you and He foreknew you - He knew what would break your heart to the point of crying out to Him, and I am talking about a salvation experience here, like your heart gets so broken by the astounding grossness of your own filthy sin that you cry out to Jesus - and God knew just when that particular breaking would happen for you.) Fall on the Rock and be broken or it will fall on you with a crushing weight, kind of with a final death blow. That's from Matthew 21, verse 44. A broken heart leading to repentance and salvation found in Christ alone is a good, good thing. You and I, we were foreknown. There is a comfort in that. You didn't slide into the Kingdom when they weren't looking, and if people have made you that way, just remember that this verse states clearly God foreknew you. You are in His family, the family of God, because that's where He wants you. Foreknown. Really, let that comfort you.   That word “foreknew” means loved and chosen beforehand, so ya know what? Ya know what, devil? Ya know what all y'all who treat me like trash, who use me to get what you want but then toss me aside (anybody listening today who has ever, ever felt like this?) Ya know what? I am loved and chosen beforehand. Beforehand! You cannot possibly be an afterthought when God loved and chose you beforehand. These are your promises, my friend! And you have got to know that you know that you know these promises are your truth. Truth matters. God's promises need to be your truth. Loved and chosen beforehand. Boy, that's so good!    And not only that, but God predestined you and me to be conformed to the image of His Son, Jesus. As we walk the path of our lives, as we run the race set before us, we are actually in the continual process of being sanctified. Being made more and more like Jesus. We will ultimately share in complete sanctification, Jesus said He didn't lose any which the Father gave to Him, and He is gonna get us there right on time and we will be in good shape upon arrival. No damaged goods sliding into heaven. Nope. Sanctification is your promise, and it is even now taking place. He intends for you to look like His Son. And doesn't God get what He intends to get? Um, yeah. Jesus is going to be so celebrated, so honored, as the firstborn among MANY who are believers. And you are one of that many.  Predestined, chosen and loved beforehand, being sanctified. Oh you've got some good things being spoken over your life today, my friend! You need to live like this is true for you. Because - spoiler alert - it is 100% true.   And those who He predestined, He also called. Okay, so I am called. And you are, as well. Called. When we know that we have been called by God, we walk with our head a little higher, with some pep in our step. We are called! And we can never be un-called when it was God who did the calling. So we walk with some assurance that we are going to get to our destination, not just our final destination, not just the end game, but also getting to every other destination God has in store for us in this life, here in the land of the living. And He does have destinations. There are stopping places, for sure, and also there are places where  He will have us pick up the pace and get to moving forward.    And since you know that He called you (and you should know that because He says so right here in the eighth chapter of the book of Romans!) then you need to know that He also justified you. To be conformed to the image of Jesus, God's Son, you can't be all filthy with sin. Rolling around in it, that's not fitting for your calling. God justified you, He declared you free of the guilt of your sin, and so be wary of sin infiltrating your life. Now we all sin, of course we do, but don't roll around in it. Don't play patty cake with it. Avoid it, mature and grow beyond childish ways, keep praying to be delivered more and more, on a continual basis, from the grasp of sin.    Basically I'm saying don't willingly go on back to the stuff God delivered you from. He has a better way for you. You've been called. That's an honor, it's a privilege, and it is also a responsibility. So ya know, act like it.   And those he justified, He also glorified. You can live today with a level of dignity that corresponds to who you are in the Kingdom of your God. Dignity. It matters. A lot, actually. Think about what it means to be dignified, to live a dignified life. Sometimes that means we don't dignify a certain situation with a response, with an emotional response. Sometimes it means we are the quietest person in the room and sometimes not the quietest. A heavenly minded dignity should permeate the lives of all who have been predestined and chosen and called and are being sanctified and are justified because it's a mark of God's hand on our lives.    Now, here is verse 31, our final verse for today. What then shall we say to all these things?  This level of promise warrants some kind of a response, doesn't it? What then shall we say to all these things? If God is for us, who can be (successful) against us?   You got an answer for that there question? Cuz I sure don't. I cannot think of one person on this planet who can be successful against me in light of all we just read. It cannot happen. Not should not, not I hope not, no. Cannot. Nobody, not even the devil himself, can be successful against you.   Did you know that? Did you really, really know that? You need to know that.    In that big meeting tomorrow, when your teenager is in some kind of rebellion and you are frazzled by it, when inflation is high and wages don't seem high enough.  Who can be against you?  Who can actually be a success in their fight and attacks and scheming against you?  Nobody. Nobody at all, no not ever, nada.  Isaiah says no weapon formed against me shall prosper. It doesn't say it will not be formed against me, that would be an untruth and there is no untruth in the Word of God. It is gonna form, because the devil hates those who love Jesus. Bottom line, he always lies and always hates and so he isn't going to wake up one day and be like, “Hey, I'ma stop lying and no more hate in my little black heart.” No. He does what he does. Think of the line from the original Jurassic Park movie, when Dr. Alan Grant says, “The other kind just do what they do.” and he was talking about the meat eaters, well, they eat meat. Not very comforting for the little girl he was talking to, but it was the truth boiled down to an explanation that was necessary. No sense dwelling on why meat eaters eat meat, because there isn't a solution to that. Just surviving that reality. Well you and I get to do a whole lot more than just survive this reality. Those weapons, no matter how many or how varied or how well thought out or how intense or how sneakily they come at us, none of them will prosper.  And no one on this planet can be a success in their attempts that are against you. Because your God is for you, He has called you, He is sanctifying you and making you more and more like His dearly loved Son, He foreknew you and loved you and He chose you, He called you, He justified you, He is giving you a level of dignity that is so far beyond this world, it's eternal dignity fit for His eternal Kingdom.    That's who is for you. That's who is for you.   And that wraps up this podcast episode about God's promises for you.   Now hey, hang on for a second - if you are encouraged or blessed or both by this content, would you leave a review or share this episode with somebody and if you are interested in reading my devotional The Power of God's Will - 40 Days of God's Promises you can find that on Amazon. And be on the lookout for my course on Psalm 91. Praying this psalm over your life, your loved ones lives, it is a forever game changer and every believer needs to do a deep dive study on this psalm. You'll pray better and more effectively, you'll have more of a mind at peace, those people you are praying for will see God's hand moving in their lives, and you will do nothing but benefit by taking this course. That may sound like quite an outcome I'm promising, but it's a promise founded solidly on the Word of God so I make that promise with boldness. And I want you to step up, take the course, and see things move and improve in your world.    I'm off to Nashville for the Spark Network Podcast Conference and I am expecting to learn so much, and to implement what I learn as soon as I get back next week.  But don't worry, episode 98 will drop right on time, just like the usual.   Hope you'll be back for that as we look at a few more verses from Romans 8. Thanks for listening - praying for you, appreciate you, excited to see God opening new doors for you on the regular.   You've been listening to TBNES, part of the Spark Network, now playing in the Edifi app.   Jan L. It is a timeless, divinely-inspired masterpiece on the joy-filled-life-as-it-should-be freedom found in Jesus. In 8:29-30, Paul unpacks the massive foundation that undergirds God's promise to “work all things for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Today, we’ll look at the first half of this foundation in verse 29.

Do we have free will, or do we have a fate that we just change? In this episode, we look at the question of free will from a scriptural perspective. Before you go, we must know that he created the wicked for the day of evil:Pro_16:4  YAHUAH hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil. These are the vessels of wrath:Rom 9:22  What if YAHUAH, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: And so an important thing to note about him is that he hardens whom he will, so as to achieve his will.Rom 9:18  Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. So there are exceptions whose free will are taken away from them and their hearts will be hardened. This is YAHUAH'S prerogative as the master potter:Rom 9:19-21  Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?  Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against YAHUAH? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?  Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? So for the rest of us who have access to his mercy, do we have free will?We use precept upon precept, line upon line, here a little, there a little to unravel the mystery.

Originally Presented: October 14, 2007 Scripture Reading: Romans 8:28-32 In Romans 8:29,30 Paul takes us, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, into the infinite mind of God.  To say the least, it is a realm in which we are way out of our element.  Our limited minds cannot begin to fully grasp the wonders of divine intention.  It is wonderful to plumb, as far as we are able, the depths of God's design in these verses and especially to notice the connection between the grand promise of Romans 8:28 and the glorious plan revealed in verses 29 and 30. The wonder of God's working all things together for good (Rom 8:28) is rooted in the design of God's intending to save some people and conform them to the image of Christ (Rom 8:29,30).  God will weave everything together for the good of His children because He has designed, even before creation, to cause them to be like His Son.  There are five marvelous verbs in verses 29 and 30 . . . foreknown, predestined, called, justified, and glorified.  The connection between them has been called 'the golden chain' because the progression describes what God has done concerning the salvation of His people and runs from before creation, in the past, into eternity, in the future. One conclusion to be drawn from this passage is that our salvation, from beginning to end, rests completely on God.  At once the truth of these verses supremely exalts the Almighty, on the one hand, and utterly crushes our pride, on the other.  To meditate on the wonders of these verses produces in our souls indescribable joy, unshakable faith, deep-rooted gratitude, and genuine humility.

Tim and Jon discuss the differences in ancient and modern ways of reading scripture, including why the Hebrew people would read scripture together as a group. The guys also talk about how challenging it can be to read the Bible by yourself. In the first half of the show (0-34:00) the guys talk about the differences between modern day emphasis on application the reading of God’s word, and the Old Testament emphasis on “responding” to hearing God’s word. The second half of the show (34-50:00) Tim exposits on the ancient Hebrew practice of reading the Torah out loud together. A practice that was instituted in the Old Testament and has continued all the way through to modern times in today’s synagogues. Tim also talks about an interesting piece of Jewish history, the Dura Europos Synagogue. Jon asks why is it so important to read the Bible together as a group. The last ten minutes of the show the guys ask what the origins of the sermon are and why ancient Israel had such a difficult time remembering what God had done for them.
