MATTHEW HENRY COMPLETE COMMENTARY Mark 8:34-38 Frequent notice is taken of the great flocking there was to Christ for help in various cases. All are concerned to know this, if they expect him to heal their souls. They must not indulge the ease of the body. As the happiness of heaven with Christ, is enough to make up for the loss of life itself for him, so the gain of all the world in sin, will not make up for the ruin of the soul by sin. And there is a day coming, when the cause of Christ will appear as glorious, as some now think it mean and contemptible. May we think of that season, and view every earthly object as we shall do at that great day.

It is likely that the Amalekite knows that David is the next in line for the throne. While the Philistines are no doubt about to settle into Israel, David is the man who took down Goliath. David is the man who has defended Israel from invaders even while Saul was still king, and Saul hated David! Saul feared David! So it is likely that this Amalekite believes the hatred is reciprocated. This man likely thinks that he can receive a reward from the new, up-and-coming king. He just did him a favor, and has a crown and armband to prove it - he “killed” Saul! His reward is not what he expects though...

Christ was crucified for fallen man. But to many who call themselves Christians this event is nothing.

Reading the Small Print

The last of our Deny Self series. This last month we've looked at denying ourselves through Paul's eyes. He wrote a wonderful, joyous letter to a church in Philippi. It was chock full of hope and good will. He was ecstatic for what God was doing for them and for him. All that positivity poured out of him as he sat shackled to two guards while he was in prison. That's crazy! He didn't have to pursue happiness in a traditional way. God gave him all that he needed and he found in in pursuing Christ.

Paul had every right to boast in the good things he had done. He had quite the resume. However, when he compared it to the glory of knowing God, he said it was all worthless. Do you consider your relationship with Christ to be the best thing in your life? It can be challenging to look at your life and see that you've not really put Jesus first. You may have every desire to do so, but good stuff just gets in the way. You have a job. A family. Hobbies. "Me" time. And all of these things are good, they're just not Jesus. They are worthless compared to the best thing. Compared to Jesus.

Jesus was the greatest hero of all time. He was the only one who truly gave everything to help others. Philippians 2 says that he "emptied" himself. He was completely God, yet decided to empty himself of his "God-ness" so that he can do what he did for us. This seems impossible! Yet our God is in the habit of doing the impossible.

Let's face it: we struggle with self-denial. Our philosophy in this country is to get what's coming to you and hopefully it is more than the next guy. We don't deny ourselves much of anything. But God called us to live a different life. Christ taught us a better way to live. His example is one of true sacrifice and self-denial. What would our lives look like if we really began to think of others before we thought of ourselves?

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Listen to how Judas for money was able to identify with Jesus but Peter for the sake of his safety disowned Jesus.

Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead.” Why Deny? Proverbs 27: 20-21 20 Just as Death (Sheol/Hell) and Destruction (Abaddon) are never satisfied, so human desire is never satisfied. 21 Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but a person is tested by being praised.  Jeremiah 17:9 9 “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? What does self-denial look like? Titus 2:11-13 For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. 12 And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, 13 while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed. Mark 1:15 15 “The time promised by God has come at last!” he announced. “The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!” Identifying with the Lord Jesus Philippians 2: 5-11 5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. 6 Though He was God, He did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.7 Instead, He gave up his divine privileges; He took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When He appeared in human form, 8 He humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal's death on a cross. 9 Therefore, God elevated Him to the place of highest honor and gave Him the name above all other names, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
