As America braces itself for the upcoming Presidential election, a growing army of coastal commentators are agonizing over the health of the country's democracy. In contrast with many of these desk bound pundits, the Bloomberg editorial director Frank Barry bought an RV and drove from New York City to San Francisco on the backroads of old Lincoln Highway. His new book, Back Roads and Better Angels, is an account of this journey into the heart of American democracy and, as Barry told me when I visited him at the Bloomberg offices in New York City, this trip has made him cautiously optimistic about the health of American democracy.Frank Barry is a Bloomberg Opinion columnist and member of the editorial board covering national affairs. He is the author of Back Roads and Better Angels: A Journey Into the Heart of American Democracy.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children. This is a public episode. Barry is a Bloomberg Opinion columnist and member of the editorial board covering national affairs. He is the author of the forthcoming book, "Back Roads and Better Angels: A Journey Into the Heart of American Democracy." He served as chief speechwriter on the Bloomberg 2020 presidential campaign after having been director of speechwriting for Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in City Hall, where he also helped create a variety of government and election reform initiatives. He is also the author of The Scandal of Reform: The Grand Failures of New York's Political Crusaders and the Death of Nonpartisanship. He received degrees from the University of Notre Dame and New York University. ABOUT BACK ROADS AND BETTER ANGELS “Enlightening and inspiring.” — Walter Isaacson “Barry probes the American soul, finding its biases, but also, nurtured by its complicated past, our better angels — with an opportunity to move forward.” — Ken Burns Bringing together two of America's unifying loves — road trips and Abraham Lincoln — Frank Barry takes readers on a thought-provoking journey into the heart of our democracy and the soul of our country A year into his marriage and having never driven an RV, Frank and his wife Laurel set out from New York City in a Winnebago to drive the nation's first transcontinental route, the Lincoln Highway, which zigzags through small towns and big cities from Times Square to San Francisco. Using the spirit of Abraham Lincoln to guide them across the land, they hope to see more clearly what holds the country together — and how we can keep it together, even amidst political divisions have grown increasingly rancorous, bitter, and exhausting. Along the way, Frank and Laurel meet Americans whose personal experiences help humanize the nation's divisions, and they encounter historical figures and events whose legacies are still shaping our sense of national identity and the struggles over it. This unforgettable journey is full of what makes any great road trip memorable and enjoyable: music, conversation, and laughter. By the end, readers will have a clearer picture of how we have arrived at a period that carries echoes of the Civil War era, and — using Lincoln as a guide — where the path forward lies. Concerns have been expressed in recent years about the condition of Killoo Church. Killoo Church and the enclosed graveyard, set in peaceful pastureland just off the M18 motorway, is reputed to be one of the oldest in the Diocese of Killaloe, predating the well-preserved abbeys of Clareabbey and Killone. A significant heritage landmark on the outskirts of Clarecastle is to undergo a major conservation programme. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey spoke with Gerard Lynch, the Secretary of Killoo Church Restoration Project, and Frank Barry, PRO, on Tuesday's Morning Focus.

Born in 1917 in Sixmilebridge, Co. Clare, Brendan O'Regan's background was in hotel management and catering, working in the family hotel in Ennis, the St Stephen's Green Club in Dublin and the world's first duty-free shop in Shannon Airport, where he is credited with inventing Irish coffee. In 1959 he was appointed by Seán Lemass as the first head of the Shannon Airport Development Association (later known as the Shannon Free Airport Development Company), which stimulated the establishment not only of an industrial base in rural County Clare but also of a whole new town, Shannon. Retiring in 1977, he remained active, founding Co-operation North. Despite these achievements, since his death in 2008 he has remained a somewhat obscure figure. To rectify this lacuna, join History Ireland editor Tommy Graham in discussion with Frank Barry, Úna Ní Bhroiméil, Seán Donlon, Brian O'Connell and Brendan's son, Andrew O'Regan. (Recorded live on Sat 13 April '24, @ Shannon College of Hotel Management, Co. Clare) This Hedge School is supported by Sixmilebridge Historical Society.

"We think the ministries that will shape the future of the Church haven't been built yet.You have a passion for Jesus and his kingdom, but you're vocationally on the edges - not exactly a pastor, not quite a traditional missionary, and not quite a typical entrepreneur. You've got some “apostolic” vision and energy, but you don't know where to go with it.We would call you a pioneer - you're probably in the intersection of pastoring, teaching, creating, and building, on the edges of media, tech, nonprofit, church planting, arts, and more. You're marked by the desire to see people encounter the Way of Jesus, and the sense that you're meant to do something new.Our accelerator is for you.
