The Hermetic Hour
Frank Herbert's Dune - Hermetic and Political Allegory (re-broadcast)

The Hermetic Hour

On Thursday July 28th, 2016 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will review and discuss Frank Herbert's 1965 science-fiction classic Dune from a magical (Hermetic) perspective and as a prophetic political allegory. Sci-Fi Writer Orson Scott Card wrote: "Remember that Herbert wrote Dune in the 1960s, before the first oil embargo, before any Islamist government was ever formed. Whether Dune had any causal influence on the rise of Al Qaeda, Herbert certainly did a superb job of predicting the rise and the power of such an ideology. The spice must flow, and so must the oil. So the political allegory is obvious but what about the hermetic magical aspect: in the 1960s when Herbert conceived Dune the big psycho-spiritual experience was LSD. Acid offered expansion of consciousness, instant enlightenment and for some, extension of consciousness. Soul travel. Hermes once wrote that one could go anywhere in the Universe instantly at the speed of thought. Some Eastern gurus had also declared that this was possible. So Frank Herbert's Spice Melange was conceived as a psychedelic agent that would enable astronaut navigators to warp space with the power of their minds -- and go anywhere in the galaxy mentally and physically. That is one Hermetic magical aspect. There is also a witchcraft cult that engages in genetic engineering, trying to breed a Demigod messiah who will launch a Jihad to conquer the galaxy. So if you'd like to consider the not so hidden inner meanings of this classic, tune in and we'll have a 21st century look back at Dune.

Welcome, dear listeners, to a show that explores what it means to be human. Sound intriguing? This week, Scott and Karl read Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel Dune which is a book thought to be The Lord of the Rings equivalent in the science fiction genre.  Scott expands, "In The Lord of the Rings, there’s something comforting and familiar about that world even when it get’s scary and the outcomes look uncertain. This world is much scarier, much more uncanny.  It may be because there are elements of this world familiar to us. This book is not about saving the environment. This is about man’s ability to mold his environment." Tune in for a discussion on what makes us human, how certain environments can put our humanity on display, and the type of education that sparks adaptability over mere preparedness in times of crisis.

I Have Some Notes

Frank Herbert's Dune is a novel of intense size and scope, and somehow Hollywood, in their infinite hubris, felt they could condense it all into a single 3 hour movie. The only thing more egotistical than that is to think all that movie's problems could be fixed in 1 hour. Thankfully we have enormous egos, and thus we have a new episode for you. Liam, Gregg and Scott drink deep the water of life, inhale the font of spice, and bask in the light of Sting to fix this 1984 epic.

Good science fiction uses fantastical characters, locations, and technology to comment intelligently on problems that we face in the real world, but the best science fiction can also do this in a suspenseful, entertaining, adventuresome way. Frank Herbert's Dune gets most of the way there, but Andrew can't help but wish he had read it for the first time as a teenager instead of an adult.

Welcome to Dark Discussions podcast. Your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that's fantastic. John W. Campbell, the editor of the science fiction magazine Analog Science Fiction and Fact, took a manuscript by a little known author named Frank Herbert entitled Dune and serialized it within the publication between the years 1963 through 1965. What resulted was a story that many literary critics say is the greatest science fiction novel in the history of literature. With high praise indeed, Dune became an international phenomena that equaled such other written series as C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia and J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth books. Taking place within a fully realized world, Dune was more than just a novel. Within its pages, an entire fantastical world was created where an intergalactic feudal universe was surrounded by political intrigue, religious fervor, and supernatural mysticism. A precious substance referred to as melange which bends the mind allowing warp travel and even in special cases premeditation becomes the center piece of power and influence. Yet it is only found on the planet of Arrakis. This world therefore becomes the focus of those with authority and war soon breaks out. Could the prophecy of the populace of Arrakis, in which a champion one day would come, be mere fable, fact, or coincidence? The legacy of Dune has resulted in an entire series of books published continuing the story first printed within Analog Science Fiction and Fact. While readers enjoyed the story’s intrigue, critical analysis showed the tale had so much more to say. Such topics as ecology, gender issues, environmentalism, the decline of nations, religion, and faith permeate the story and have brought great discussion of what the real meaning of the novel is. Dark Discussions brings the world of Dune to our listeners with an overview of how Frank Herbert’s novel was a towering point to all that’s fantastic.
