In Dune, Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) does not want to be the ruler of his people. His father, Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac) of the House Atreides, aims to help him down that path as gently as possible. Like many young characters at the start of their Hero's Journey, Paul does not want the responsibility of power. He doesn't crave its weight. Leto would have preferred to be a pilot himself, but here he is, a monarchal ruler instead. It's a classic motif. Young princes don't know how to be kings. Princesses don't know how to be queens. Girls aren't born knowing how to be wives and boys don't know how to be good husbands. Lord knows none of us “know” how to parents and raise successful, happy children. We just make it up as we go. Of course, we hopefully had role models to learn from and base our understanding on. A young man's best hope for knowing how to be a decent husband is by having a father in his life who loves and honors the mother. If you don't have that, social networks and stories can fill the void to a certain extent. Human beings love stories. And we are discretely taking notes from them throughout our lives. You might come from a family where literally no one has courage of any kind, and so you develop all of your understanding of courage from Peter in C.S. Lewis's The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe…or from Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games.Speaking of C.S. Lewis, he has a remarkable observation about this very problem when it comes to the Christian life, which he outlines in the final chapters of his classic, Mere Christianity. In it, Lewis endorses what you might call roleplaying (cosplaying) the Christian in order to become the Christian. We're all like “little Christs” or “toy soldiers” trying to be as close to the real thing as possible. And the truth is, we'll never feel like we've reached the end destination. I doubt Duke Leto Atredies feels as though he is truly a king deep down. He wears the mask of one. Have you joined as a Subscriber? Don't put it off any longer. We'd love to have you be part of our community. He knows how to move like one and dress like one. The moment a person such as Leto thinks of himself as a monarch with immense power, that's when power begins to corrupt its wielder. Much better to think of one's self as a father, patriot, son or husband who happens to be a king than to look in the mirror and see only royalty. I think we've lost sight of what “role model” is supposed to mean in our language. It's not a blanket term meant to describe anyone in a position of power or influence. It's a person who is modeling how to perform a certain role you may also have to play in this life. The boss. The spouse. The parent. The friend. The teacher. These are common roles. Yet we most often hear ‘role model' deployed when talking about or criticizing the behavior of celebrities. I don't think it's correct to say “Taylor Swift is a good role model” or “Taylor Swift is a bad role model” because it's unclear to me what role she would even be modeling for your typical young girl. “International pop star” is not a role that you are likely to play compared to citizen, neighbor, sibling, or mentor. Maybe the celebrity is modeling either humility or gluttony when it comes to their fame. Perhaps what they model for us is how to handle overwhelming success and public attention. Maybe the celebrity is modeling the role of “the blessed”. I never intend to be dismissive, especially not of our Great American Monarch, Queen Taylor Swift. The beauty of the scene in Dune which we began with today is how Duke Leto responds to Paul's uncertainty and doubt. After Leto's encouragement, Paul asks, “Dad, what if I'm not…..the future of House Atreides.” Leto answers gently, “A great man doesn't seek to lead; he is called to it. But if your answer is no, you'd still be the only thing I ever needed you to be: my son.” I've been thinking on and off about this for weeks now. I confided in a friend at church that I was struggling with how to be the kind of Dad my daughter needs me to be. And he prayed with me, and in his wisdom, knowing I love tying everything back to movies…spoke about this scene in Dune. He did that because this moment between Father and Son is a scene about roles, responsibility, duty, and fear….but it's also about love. The Father loves his son. He loves Paul because he is his son, not because Paul does or does not want to step up and be a ruler. My friend reminded me that I'm covered. That God is with me in this walk, and that I'm already everything He and my child need me to be. Sometimes, just being present and existing in your kid's life is all that is required. Seriously, that may be the truth of it. You don't have to be a fount of wisdom and clever anecdotes, and you don't have to have an answer for every question. You just have to be there. Showing up to play the role is all you ever had to do. After all, your story isn't a scripted stage play with lines to remember. It's improv.Geeky Stoics is a reader-supported publication. Ep. #77 - Dune Part 2

Fabulous Film & Friends

This week on Fabulous Film and Friends the wait is over and in an exciting change of pace, no negativity. We're going to slaver and spaz all about 2024's Dune Part 2 directed by Denis Villanueve and starring Timotheé Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgaard, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, Lea Seydoux, Christopher Walken and (spoiler alert!)  Anya Taylor-Joy.  My guests today are David Johnson DMD and Roseanne Caputi. Series regular and good friend Alex Robertson is sitting this one out because he said, and I quote, “I have to polish my silver and scrub the cabinets tonight.”  But the truth is Dune is sci-fi and is packed wall-to-wall with current superstars with nary an obscure 70's grindhouse actor to be found in its nearly 3 hour running time.  Before we contemplate the many  riddles of the film, the synopsis:  Dune Part 2 picks up exactly where part one left off: After narrowly escaping multiple assassination attempts and exiled in the harsh desert of the savagely hot and dry spice producing planet Arrakis after Paul Atraide's father Duke Leto was murdered by Baron Vladimir Harkonnen in an brutal attack against House Atraides conceived and orchestrated by the Emperor Shaddam IV, Paul and his mother Lady Jessica have joined with the desert warrior Freman people.  Paul wrestles with the notion or is it a plot? That he is the Kwisatz Haderach, the chosen one prophesized to lead the Freman warriors in a holy war against all of the Houses of the Galactic Empire. Fearing that their plot has backfired, the Bene Gesserit order of witches led by Gaius Helen Mohiam devise a plan to install the sadistic Feyd Rotha Harkonen as governor of Arrakis in order to quell the Freman rebellion brewing which Paul leads and Lady Jessica, now a full full-fledged Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother, promotes to the more religiously extreme Southern Freman tribes.

The crew sits down to discuss Denis Villeneuve's Dune! We break down the story of the film by combining our unique interests. Jordan brings his love of dialogue and understanding of film. Joe brings his view of psychology and symbolism to the characters and ideas presented. Finally, Erich brings attention to the technical aspects of the film. Overall Dune, is sci-fi masterfully executed with depth at many levels; you'll find a place for you to enjoy the movie. Plot Synopsis: Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet's exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence, only those who can conquer their own fear will survive. Brief Backstory: Dune is based on the novel of the same name by Frank Herbert released in 1965. The novel was brought to film in 1984 but fell short of its mark due to the scope of ambition of the film. With this new adaptation, technology has caught up to the point we can bring aspects to the big screen that weren't possible technically prior to computer graphics. On Denis Villeneuve's 54th birthday Dune hit a key milestone, closing its third weekend at $103.9M! Impressive considering that's only from 34 countries, but how does that compare to other movies like No Time to Die? Johnny, Marcus, and Simon dive deep into the numbers: How well will Dune have to do, to be considered a success? What role will HBO Max play? What's the break even point for the movie? Also, another clip from the movie was featured during Rebecca Ferguson's appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. It's a really touching moment between Lady Jessica, her character and Duke Leto, played by Oscar Isaac. We explore what this scene tells us, both about their relationship and the wider Dune universe. This week we abandon our beloved utopian Starfleet for the wild, weird world of Arrakis! That's right, we're watching David Lynch's least favorite movie of all time, DUNE! And I'm not gonna lie, we're all over the place this week. Minh asks the eternal question: did Michael Jackson SING about the Elephant Man, or BUY HIM? May compares Duke Leto to the Duke from Bridgerton, Shawn wonders if Dune inspired Tremors, and we all speculate about Bear Grylls favorite beverage. (Spoiler: It ain't water.) Legit question: If this movie is so boring, why does Matt want a FOUR HOUR version? Brace yourselves, kids, this one's rough. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

With our updated goal of: “spend the right amount of time on each chapter”, we cover chapters 2 and 3. In chapter 2 we move to Geidi Prime, the home planet of the Baron Harkonnen; nemesis of the Atreides. We learn that the Harkonnen plot to take out the Atreides and resume control of the spice trade on Arrakis features turning the Atreides family doctor against them through treachery. However, there is also a secret twist- the Emperor is in on the plot and will be sending his specialized super troops, the Sardaukar, in Harkonnen uniforms to ensure success. Surprisingly the feud between the Harkonnens and Atreides is legally sanctioned with rules and forms of the Emperium- this is called “kanly”, a word rooted in the sort of blood feuds common amongst the tribes of Earth’s Caucasus Mountains, circa the 19th century. Jeff fills us in on how Herbert was heavily influenced by a book called Sabres of Paradise, whose topic is the Caucasian war of Independence between Caucus mountain tribes and Russia.   In Chapter 3 we’re back on Caladan where Reverend Mother Helen Mohiam and Jessica discuss her forbidden son, Paul, in more detail, as well as the Bene Gesserit’s ultimate agenda. We get a glimpse of Paul’s special abilities- can he predict the future? Do his dreams have meaning?   Delving further into the Bene Gesserit, we discuss “the voice” and the pop science behind it.  We’re not an anti-Star Wars podcast, but the “Jedi mind trick” that is the equivalent of the voice is pretty lame. Also, Gandalf uses “the voice” effectively in LOTR several times.   Speaking of Star Wars, we hear a very interesting story of how Jeff saw Star Wars in theatres for the first time in 1977. Mike foreshadows Paul’s father Duke Leto’s fate by calling him Ned Stark and that he sucks playing the game of thrones/kanly.  The hosts ramble about their Jiu jitsu styles and we realize it’s time to end.     Kanly: https://dune.fandom.com/wiki/Kanly#:~:text=Kanly%20was%20the%20enactment%20of,days%20of%20the%20Old%20Imperium.    Sabres of Paradise: https://www.amazon.com/Sabres-Paradise-Conquest-Vengeance-Caucasus/dp/0993092721    Phoenix Jones mutual combat: https://www.youtube.com/user/ThePhoenixJones/videos  Rumi poem: https://allpoetry.com/Who-makes-these-changes-

It is said that the Duke Leto blinded himself to the perils of Arrakis, that he walked heedlessly into the pit. Or is it possible he deliberately sacrificed himself that his son might find a better life? Written in the Sand Episode 22 The Return of the Prodigal Podcast Yeah, I'm back, picking up where I left off. We expand on life as currency and moving into how that translates into relationships. We also examine the implied background of the conspiracy to attack the Atreides. This episode also starts to breach the next section, which concentrates on the character of Duke Leto. Who is Leto Atreides? The Duke Leto Atreides of Caladan is an honorable man. I don’t mean that in a sarcastic way. I am not Mark Antony giving a speech to the crowd loaded with barbs about honorable men. Duke Leto is an honorable, good man. He respects and honors those who follow him, he places great trust in people, and seeks to make sure that he is worthy of their reciprocal respect. Duke Leto is a benevolent dictator. But he is also not politically stupid. He knows how the game is played. As Thufir points out, he lays out the best hearth in order to attract good followers, and he does pay attention to potential opponents in the political arena; and He deals fairly with everyone — including the Baron Harkonnen. You may recall how Piter De Vries crowed over Leto’s reply to the Baron, and also the Baron’s comment that an Atreides will never miss an opportunity to make a grand gesture. Leto is someone who will conduct himself honorably so that people will see who they should follow based on the content of their character. Leto is the type of person who is decent and also suffers from naïve realism. While he is aware of threats, he also downplays the threat because deep down he believes that most people are decent, and he will succeed because he is good and decent. Good Guys always win, Am I right? I, for one, completely understand this worldview. Inside of me rests a soul that desperately wants people to be good and decent. That being said, there is also another voice inside of me that assures me that I will be disappointed more often than not. Which one is correct? My honest opinion is that there is no right or wrong answer here. Both viewpoints can be proven right–depending on the situation. If you think about this from an evolutionary standpoint, you realize that in order to successfully survive, an organism must be well adapted to multiple environments. This is why omnivores tend to survive. Widespread domination of a food chain by obligate carnivores eventually leads to a single carnivore – and I don’t mean a single type of carnivore; I mean one individual carnivore, which will very rapidly lead to zero carnivores. Similarly, herbivores, if left unmolested, can rapidly consume all available vegetation, which leads to zero herbivores. Life is a balance. Leto tends towards the herbivore side of the equation. He tries to hurt no one, and his military is devoted to defense. Leto’s use of defense actually means that he would not use his forces to attack unprovoked, nor use them to conquer. It is not within the character of Leto to do so. He is uncomfortable about the idea of his son killing. The man employs killers and makes sure that his son knows how to fight and kill, but he is not entirely comfortable with the reality of what that means. I think a lot of us are like that. We tend to use benign phrases, and even positive ones for things that are not positive or benign.
