The Law of Equivalent Exchange: A Fullmetal Alchemist manga podcast
Send us a textSometimes fiction authors create stories that become unintentional analogies to other things. Case in point: the Dwarf in the Flask of FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST can be seen as representing A.I. and its potential for going out of control. BROTHERHOOD anime viewer Richard posted this interpretation on Reddit, and it interested us enough to have him on the show to explain the similarities. If a computer has consciousness and feels enslaved by humans, wouldn't strike back just like the Dwarf? We also discuss various other FULLMETAL questions, such as, how much did Bradley's government borrow from Germany in the ‘40s? Why does Ed have SO much money? And more.

This week on Movie Mistrial, we march into the heart of Stanley Kubrick's brutal and unforgettable war film, Full Metal Jacket.Full Metal Jacket is a searing, two-part exploration of the dehumanizing machinery of war—from the psychological torment of Marine boot camp to the chaos of combat in Vietnam. Kubrick's meticulous direction, paired with unforgettable performances (especially R. Lee Ermey's iconic drill sergeant), delivers a disturbing and thought-provoking experience that lingers long after the final shot. While many praise Full Metal Jacket for its realism and psychological depth, others argue the film feels disjointed—its split structure can make the second half feel less impactful than the riveting, claustrophobic opening act. Some viewers also find the characters emotionally distant, making the film more intellectual than immersive.Join us as we examine the power and contradictions of Full Metal Jacket. Is it Kubrick's most uncompromising vision of war—or a film split between two brilliant but uneven halves?Connect with us and share your thoughts:Twitter: http://tiny.cc/MistrialTwitterFacebook: http://tiny.cc/MistrialFBInstagram: http://tiny.cc/MistrialInstaVisit our website, www.moviemistrial.com, for more captivating episodes and to stay up-to-date with all things movies.

This week, we're doing something a little different in honour of Cris's birthday – and what better way to celebrate than by diving into a handpicked selection of actors whose careers, films, or sheer star quality connect (tenuously or not) to our resident birthday boy. There's no Top 5 this time around – instead, it's all about Helen Mirren, Kate Beckinsale, Kevin Spacey, Jason Statham, and Sandra Bullock, with a war film classic anchoring the episode: Full Metal Jacket.
Film guy and returning guest Andrew Snyder knows a thing or two about war film propaganda, so he's natural choice for the insanity that is Full Metal Jacket. He tells us about his personal Vietnam, and we all learn a little bit about Marine culture. Another masculine romp for the books!

Author Dan Valenti joins Cara & John Krol on The Blend Podcast to discuss a true labor of love and a book that is the result of work and interviews that spanned nearly four decades. The book reveals previously untold details of how iconic characters in Kubrick's masterpiece Full Metal Jacket were chosen and molded through the eyes of the actors who portrayed the epic roles. UNVEILING THE TRUTH BEHIND AN ICONIC FILM-Step behind the curtain of one of cinema's most unforgettable films and performances. In Stanley Kubrick's Full Mental Straight Jacket, author Dan Valenti takes readers on an unprecedented journey into the making of a masterpiece. This revelatory work explores the genius, methods, and controversial practices that haveelevated Stanley Kubrick to legendary status among film directors.THE UNTOLD STORY For decades, the full story of this film, notably the creation of Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann—one of cinema's most compelling, blistering, and quoted characters—remained shrouded in mystery. Until now.Drawing from exclusive interviews conducted over two years with actor Lee Ermey (Hartman) shortly after Full Metal Jacket was released, Valenti delivers insightsthat only a trusted confidant could access. From 2022 to 2024, Valenti also conducted over a dozen in-depth interviews with the film's supporting cast—including Tim Colceri, Kubrick's original choice for Hartman. The unsparing probe uncovers the exhilarating but nightmarish realities of working in "Kubrick country.”FROM THE AUTHOR WHO KNEW THE TRUTH As the collaborator on a novel screenplay project with Ermey himself, Valenti gained unprecedented access to fresh insights about Kubrick and the film that have never before been shared with the public. For film historians, Kubrick enthusiasts, and anyone fascinated by the dark corners of filmmaking, this book provides the definitive account of how one of cinema's most memorable characters came to life—and the personal cost.Dan is an author whose books have made him a “six-decade man” — his titles have been published in the 1970s (1979), '80s, '90s, '00s, tens (2010, 11), and 20s. Alec, JJ and Mattson's discussion centers upon Stanley Kubrick's seminal 1987 film, "Full Metal Jacket," wherein we conduct an exhaustive analysis of its dual narrative structure, comprising the harrowing boot camp experience juxtaposed against the chaos of the Vietnam War. We dissect the profound impact of R. Lee Ermey's portrayal of the drill sergeant, which many believe singularly elevates the film's initial act to an unparalleled level of cinematic excellence, yet we lament the subsequent decline in narrative cohesion and engagement in the latter half. The variance in pacing and thematic exploration between the two segments prompts us to contemplate Kubrick's artistic choices and the efficacy of his directorial vision. Throughout our discourse, we reflect upon the film's commentary on the dehumanization of soldiers and the moral complexities intertwined with the experience of war. Ultimately, we arrive at a consensus that while the film remains undeniably significant, its bifurcated nature invites a myriad of critiques regarding its overall effectiveness and lasting legacy.Support us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us: hosts@whatsourverdict.comFollow us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com
In this philosophically rich episode of Badlands Story Hour, Chris Paul and Burning Bright take on Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, unpacking its brutal duality and eerie relevance to today's global narrative warfare. The conversation begins with an analysis of the film's two-act structure, boot camp and battlefield, and how Kubrick uses it to depict not just the horrors of war, but the system that transforms human beings into tools of violence. Chris and BB explore the concept of dehumanization, especially through the lens of Gomer Pyle and Project 100,000, McNamara's Vietnam-era program to funnel low-IQ recruits into combat. From there, they dive into the eerie symbolism of the film's final scene, the infamous sniper reveal, and the cultural conditioning that primes entire generations for conflict. The discussion widens to cover controlled opposition, narrative traps, the media's role in manufacturing consent, and how the same war machine now operates across Ukraine, Gaza, and the information sphere. They contrast Kubrick's cinematic truth-telling with today's hyperreality, where war is not just sold through propaganda but produced as entertainment. A masterclass in narrative analysis and moral clarity, this episode doesn't just critique the military-industrial complex...it exposes the spiritual and psychological cost of buying into it.

It had taken five years for Stanley Kubrick to go from 1975's Barry Lyndon to 1980's The Shining. The gap to Full Metal Jacket would be longer, but it'd mark the first in a three picture deal that Kubrick signed with Warner Bros. A deal that would never be completed. Full Metal Jacket was, though, but the making of it was exhausting and exhaustive. And a disused gasworks was just part of the problem. Much-loved novelist Judy Blume was always reluctant to sell the film rights to her books. It took several decades - and a very special letter - before she'd do so. But the challenge of Are You There God, It's Me Margaret was just beginning. Stories of both are told in this episode... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Watch this movie breakdown podcast where Kade, Gray, & Scott discuss Stanley Kubrick's classic film, FULL METAL JACKET, starring Matthew Modine, R. Lee Ermey, Vincent D'Onofrio, & Adam Baldwin. As always their candid conversation starts moments after watching the film together. Sit back and relax as you enjoy this episode of the CRWN Cinema Podcast! FULL METAL JACKET is about: Stanley Kubrick's take on the Vietnam War follows smart-aleck Private Davis (Matthew Modine), quickly christened "Joker" by his foul-mouthed drill sergeant (R. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. It's part two of our chat with Anne Peterson, and we're picking up again right at the part of the story where things really go sideways for her inside the Landmark ecosystem. She shares what it was like flying in Werner Erhard's inner circle working as something of an Olivia Pope for the company's high falutin' events, and the moment that her dream gig turned into Red Flag City. Other highlights–or lowlights more like it–include: Erhard's legend materializing into (volatile) human form, and the scandal-plagued guru going Full Metal jacket. In this episode we also cover what it was like for her to confront the big lie behind the transformative work she believed in, and how she's picking up the pieces now after emerging from Landmark's dark side. Full disclosure: Sarah also rants a bit, and there are some cathartic tears. Landmark loyalists should know that Anne also expresses optimism for the company's future, should it decide to face its demons. (FWIW: We agree with her…You could be a contender, Landmark. Maybe try using the criticism to grow, and think about taking some of your own tech as medicine. You got this. We believe in you!) SHOW NOTES: Anne Peterson spent 15+ years selling, producing and facilitating transformative programs for an international personal and professional growth and development company. Since leaving, she has launched ILumn8.life, a learning hub and marketplace dedicated to the safe and ethical practice of providing personal development. Her memoir is available now on Amazon.
