Julie Novak and Sonyamia Blanco share their unique voices and stories through the Future Perfect Project, the organization that amplifies the voices of queer youth. While lawmakers are working overtime to pass laws and propose measures to limit the self-expression of LGBQTAI youth in schools and communities, The Future Perfect Project is encouraging the next generation to speak their truth and sing their songs of tomorrow. This organization produces and facilitates creative workshops, media projects, and performance opportunities for queer youth and allies, ages 13 - 22. From writer's rooms where they develop writing skills to Future Perfect Records, the 8-month online program for singer-songwriters, producers and musicians to their own podcast project, I'm Feeling Queer Today!, where they encourage everyone to speak their minds, now more than ever, we need their vision of a better world. ------------------------------------------- Solve the cozy mystery of DROWN TOWN - Steve's first novel is available now: Amazon: https://amzn.to/478W8mp OR Barnes & Noble: https://bit.ly/3Mv7cCk
Angela Briones is the proud host of The Gay Podcast for Everyone - and when she says everyone, she means everyone. Whether you align yourself as gay or straight, we all have room to learn from and grow with one another. And that includes Angela herself who discovered her own bias just by doing her show and that discovery caused her to dive deeper and become more open. We talk about the straight parents raising LGBQT kids she features on her show, how she came out to her own parents and whether or not they made it out alive from an escape room (not necessarily in that order). This is another example of how much the world is changing and evolving - and how acceptance, support and love are our shared experience. ------------------------------------------- Solve the cozy mystery of DROWN TOWN - Steve's first novel is available now: Amazon: https://amzn.to/478W8mp OR Barnes & Noble: https://bit.ly/3Mv7cCk

Alex Roque is President and Executive Director of the Ali Forney Center in New York City. The center was founded in 2002 in memory of Ali Forney, a homeless gender-nonconforming youth who was forced to live on the streets, where they were tragically murdered. Committed to saving the lives of LGBTQ+ young people, their mission is to protect them from the harms of homelessness and empower them with the tools needed to live independently. A 24-hour program, The Ali Forney Center never closes its doors. They provide more than just a bed and food for those in need — from initial intake at our drop-in center to transitional housing and job readiness training, we provide homeless LGBTQ+ youth a safe, warm, supportive environment to escape the streets. Alex shares with us his own amazing journey working with the center, which just celebrated their 20th anniversary.

Pieter Valk is the founder and leader of Equip, which seeks to help churches become places where LGBT+ Christians could belong and thrive according to a traditional sexual ethic. Not only does he help pastors and parents navigate this difficult issue, but he also counsels young people who struggle with same-sex attraction and points them lovingly and gently to the life-changing message of the Gospel. In this conversation, Pieter and Jeremy discuss how the Church can better minister to those struggling with same-sex attraction without sacrificing the truth of God's design for our lives. Pieter also illustrates what a dynamic life of celibacy, of which he is called to, looks like and how it impacts the kingdom in ways marriage does not. Listen in and be challenged and ministered to by Pieter and his work to glorify God and to equip others to do the same! Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) sit down to chat about the lesbian period pieces that we have been getting inundated with lately. It has been a trend for a long time, but it has definitely been getting worse. They continue casting famous straight actors and then using the exact same plot. We aren’t knocking the formula, we love a good lesbian yearning scene. But there are just so many of these movies and the majority of them do not have happy endings. Only 5% of all lesbian films and tv shows end happily. We are bombarded with tragedy and we are sick of it. We talk about how much better it would be if they could give us some happy endings, literally any diversity, queer actors, and queer directors. We also talk about our favorite lesbian period pieces and why they work for us, like Carol, Dickinson, and Gentleman Jack. “Pride & Prejudance Adventure” (March 14, 2021) The Great North is not Bob’s Burgers with snow. Okay, it is a little bit, but the show has its own vibe and, more importantly for our purposes, an out gay teen as well. In the show’s sixth episode, Ham not only meets a love interest but actually gets to kiss him full on the lips — and that is neither remotely controversial nor is it the only queer plot thread in this episode. Yeah, we’re fans of this new show and we think you should be too. Clarity is reasonable. Ambiguity is harmful. I love the mission of Church Clarity to raise the standards of clarity for churches to present their policies clearly on their websites so that those who choose to participate in these communities are not harmed by bait-and-switch ambiguity. Here’s my conversation with one of the founders of Church Clarity, George Mekhail, who is a parent of two kids. We talk about how to raise our children in understanding what words mean and to let your yes be yes. I’m especially grateful for how Church Clarity will help protect LGBTQ teens who may want to enter a church community to be CLEAR on how fully they will be welcomed. Please check out the website in the links and submit churches and together, let’s raise the standards for clarity. On January 12, 2018, Sam Woodward was arrested and charged with the murder of a former classmate, 19-year-old Blaze Bernstein.Police had found a knife stained with Blaze’s blood in Sam’s room, along with blood inside Sam’s car. Sam told police he had hung out with Blaze the night he disappeared. The story behind Blaze’s tragic death, as reported by Jonathan Krohn in his feature article for Mother Jones magazine “How a Gay Teen, an Internet Nazi, and a Late-Night Rendezvous Turned to Tragedy” (titled “Boy Meets Hate” in the print edition), is that of a boy driven by his white supremacist views and self-hatred over his own sexuality to take Blaze’s life. In this installment of “Leonard Lopate at Large” on WBAI, Johnathan Krohn joins us to discuss the events recounted in his article.
