Blaze Bernstein was good. He was a good kid who grew into a good teen and was making a pretty smooth transformation into a good adult. Blaze was kind and talented. Blaze was adventurous and intelligent. Blaze was gay and Jewish. Sam Woodward was angry. Sam was an angry kid who grew into an angry teen and transformed into an angry adult. Sam was aggressive and isolated. Sam was confused and hungry for attention. Sam was a homophobic white supremacist. This is the story of 2 boys who grew up just an hour away from one another. Both boys were raised in affluent families, both attended the same prestigious art school, and had many advantages in life. So how did one end up violently stabbing the other to death in an empty park in the middle of the night? Well, it seems that one can take two very different paths and still end up at the same destination. One chose hope, and the other chose hate. The experience of going away to college is a memorable milestone in each person's life. It is usually the time when we transition away from childhood and start down the path of adulthood. We often meet new friends whom we would not have encountered in our hometowns, and we are exposed to different cultures and ideas that can be explored and enjoyed. This was what Blaze Bernstein was looking forward to when he began attending the University of Pennsylvania in the Fall of 2016, and for a young man who was already exceptional, a wider array of personalities and experiences served to bring to light the man he would surely become. Blaze always faced each new chapter in his life with curiosity and bravery, because his hunger for learning and growing was endless. But when he flew back home to California for winter break, he encountered a challenge that he could not defeat with his light and love. On the evening of January 2nd, 2018, Blaze left the home of his parents to meet up with an old friend, and he never came home. He was not on the plane that was supposed to fly him back to Pennsylvania for the start of the new semester on January 7th, and on January 10th, Blaze's brutalized body was found in a shallow grave, his bright and promising life snuffed out by ignorance and hate. In 2017, Blaze Bernstein, a talented and beloved young gay man, returned home to California to visit his family for the holidays and vanished into thin air. Or so it seemed. Our Party People have been asking us to visit this shocking case for some time, so Christopher and Eric made it the focus of this True Crime TV Club, serving up episode 45 of season 43 of the series 48 HOURS, entitled "In The Name of Hate". This vicious hate crime seems open and shut. But Christopher and Eric debate whether or not the producers fully illuminated the terrible events that lead to Blaze's murder, or descended into conspiratorial fearmongering to support their own narrative. In the end, did 48 HOURS focus enough on the real killer? Christopher and Eric have opinions, as always.
Blaze Bernstein was a beautiful, charismatic, and talented young college man, cooking and writing his way to success. Until he was brutally murdered, just for being who he was, a Jewish, homosexual, man, by a member of the neo-Nazi group. Sam Woodward faces life in prison for allegedly luring Blaze to meet him and then murdering him in cold blood. Blaze's family has started an organization and movement in Blaze's honor, Blaze It Forward. In this episode of Sharing Goodwill, I connect with Jeanne and Gideon Bernstein, parents of Blaze Bernstein and founders of the Blaze It Forward movement. After the tragic murder of their son, they created this movement to honor his legacy and spread kindness throughout our community, and really the world. Their commitment to turning heartbreak into goodness is truly extraordinary. They are endlessly inspiring, and it was an honor to speak with them. I hope you enjoy this episode and use it as the push you may have been waiting for to do good and share kindness in your family, in your neighborhood or school, and beyond.
In early January of 2018, Blaze Bernstein was only 19 years old when he was murdered in a hate crime. We had the privilege and honor of meeting and conversing with his mother, Jeanne Pepper Bernstein. She shares with us powerful messages about persevering in times of such despair, while emphasizing the power of hope.Jeanne is an attorney, writer, speaker and advocate for the Kindness movement and advocates for the LGBTQ community as a parent of a gay teen. She received public attention when her gay Jewish son, Blaze, was murdered at the beginning of 2018 in the first hate crime of that year. Jeanne and her husband Gideon went on to start the #BlazeitForward movement which promotes intentional Kindness and Community Service. January 2, 2018. Lake Forest, California. Blaze Bernstein left his parents’ home to meet up with a guy he had known from his high school days. The following day, his parents reported him missing when he failed to return home. Samuel Woodward, the man that Blaze had met with, claimed that Blaze had walked away into Borrego Park after an argument and he hadn’t seen him since. However, a week after he disappeared, Blaze’s body was found partially buried in the park. He had been murdered. Quickly, the police zeroed in on Samuel as their prime suspect. As new information arose, the police realized that the murder wasn’t a random event; Blaze had been murdered because he was gay and Jewish.

On January 12, 2018, Sam Woodward was arrested and charged with the murder of a former classmate, 19-year-old Blaze Bernstein.Police had found a knife stained with Blaze’s blood in Sam’s room, along with blood inside Sam’s car. Sam told police he had hung out with Blaze the night he disappeared. The story behind Blaze’s tragic death, as reported by Jonathan Krohn in his feature article for Mother Jones magazine “How a Gay Teen, an Internet Nazi, and a Late-Night Rendezvous Turned to Tragedy” (titled “Boy Meets Hate” in the print edition), is that of a boy driven by his white supremacist views and self-hatred over his own sexuality to take Blaze’s life. In this installment of “Leonard Lopate at Large” on WBAI, Johnathan Krohn joins us to discuss the events recounted in his article.
On the night of January 2, 2018, Blaze Bernstein went out with a former classmate from high school, unbeknownst to his family. He never came back. The post #72 The Tale of Blaze Bernstein appeared first on Orbital Jigsaw.

Reporter A.C. Thompson details his investigation of Atomwaffen, a growing neo-Nazi and murderous white supremacist group with heavily armed members in about 20 American cities. Founded and run by young, white males, the group has expanded in the wake of the protests last year in Charlottesville, VA. One member, Samuel Woodward, is charged in Orange County, CA, with the January 2018 murder of 19-year-old Blaze Bernstein — a gay, Jewish college student. Related: What Five ‘Domestic Terrorism' Cases Tell Us About FBI Tactics Related: Spotlight on the FBI: The Bureau's Checkered Past and Present Thompson's team at the website ProPublica obtained and reviewed some 250,000 chat messages exchanged by Atomwaffen (German for “nuclear weapons”) supporters, including hateful, anti-Semitic comments about Bernstein's murder. Thompson notes that Atomwaffen is not aligned with Trump. The group's guru is James Mason — who joined the American Nazi Party in the 1960s and wrote Siege, which is considered Atomwaffen's manifesto. In the space of a few months, people associated with the group have been charged in five murders; another member pleaded guilty to possession of explosives in a possible plot to blow up a nuclear facility near Miami. Despite this — and threats by a Las Vegas member to target the power grid in the West — Thompson says the FBI shows little interest in Atomwaffen, and there's no indication that the FBI is deploying undercover agents or using the techniques that have become commonplace in domestic terrorism investigations that target Muslim Americans. Jeanne Pepper Bernstein is the mother Blaze Bernstein. On January 10, 2018, 19-year-old University of Pennsylvania sophomore Blaze Bernstein was found dead in a park in Orange County, California, eight days after having been reported missing. He was visiting his family in Lake Forest, California, when he was killed. Two days later, one of Blaze's former high school classmates and a member of neo-Nazi terrorist group Atomwaffen Division was arrested and charged with murdering him. Because Blaze was both openly gay and Jewish, authorities declared that he was a victim of a hate crime. You can watch a complete 48 Hours episode on the crime, but our focus with Jeanne was to get to know Blaze and understand the family's effort to honor his memory through the Blaze Bernstein Memorial Fund and a pay-it-forward movement called BlazeItForward. In This Episode, You Will Learn:How the Bernsteins have coped with their loss.Jeanne's thoughts on faith in light of Blaze's death. How people have tried to make sense of his death in ways that have been painful to the family. The ways that Blaze's legacy is living on and how you can participate.Free Five-Minute Meditations:InspoRising.com/FiveMinutesConnect with Jeanne:BlazeBernstein.orgBlaze Bernstein Memorial FundBlaze Bernstein ObituaryBlazeItForward (Facebook Group)Instagram (Jeanne)Twitter (Jeanne)Orangewood FoundationBlaze Bernstein Murder: Was an Ivy League Student Slain in the Name of Hate?
