Send us a textWhen a lifelong hunter from New Brunswick relocates to Saskatchewan, the learning curve becomes a fascinating journey through Canada's diverse hunting landscapes. Dave shares his nine-year adventure adapting to prairie hunting while bringing along his east coast hunting ethic and determination.Saskatchewan's trophy whitetail reputation comes with controversy, as we explore the lottery system that gives residents preferential access while limiting opportunities for other Canadian hunters. The sponsorship system for family members offers improved odds but still no guarantees, creating frustration for hunters wanting to experience the province's legendary deer hunting without hiring outfitters. The conversation takes a serious turn discussing Chronic Wasting Disease management across provincial borders. With CWD now detected in 59 of Saskatchewan's 83 wildlife management zones, hunters face new regulations and ethical questions about testing, transportation, and consumption of harvested animals. We compare different provincial approaches to containing this 100% fatal deer disease and the role hunters play in management efforts.Dave's enthusiasm peaks when sharing his expertise training German Shorthaired Pointers for pheasant hunting. From the natural instincts of backing another dog's point to the remarkable ability to track injured birds through dense cattails, his stories highlight the special partnership between hunters and their dogs. His detailed descriptions of pheasant behavior – including the surprising fact that they can run faster than they fly – provide valuable insights for anyone interested in pursuing these challenging gamebirds.Whether discussing the prairie moose that feed in canola fields or the limitations of wildlife management funding, this conversation spans the breadth of Canadian hunting experiences with authenticity and practical knowledge. Dave's journey reminds us that adapting to new hunting environments requires both respect for traditional skills and openness to learning new approaches.Check us out on Facebook and instagram Hunts On Outfitting, and also our YouTube page Hunts On Outfitting Podcast. She's the founder of the Dog Breeder Society and she runs a successful business breeding German Shorthaired Pointers and Rat Terriers. But don't tune out if you're not a dog breeder! This conversation is full of financial tips that apply to any type of pet business. You'll learn about the numbers you need to know in order to set your pricing, plus the one number that really doesn't matter at all! Julie also gives us actionable steps to be more confident about our pricing. I also loved hearing Julie's insight on pricing gaps. You know when you see someone who has a product for $5 and another for $500 with nothing in between. That's a pricing gap and you want to avoid having that in your business. It makes customers doubtful of the value of both the cheaper item and the expensive item. If you want to hear more of my insights into how I would implement Julie's advice from this conversation, there's an exclusive bonus episode for Wear Wag Repeat Society members. This year I'm releasing a new bonus episode every month with real examples of how I would implement each expert podcast guests' advice. A lot of the time I'm walking the walk with this advice in my own business, so if you're curious and want that extra insight, get on the waitlist for Wear Wag Repeat Society. Membership opens for about a week at the start of each quarter - so the next chance to join is early April. But today, here on this episode, we still have tons of valuable and actionable advice for you. Let's dive right into the interview with Julie Swan. Gina, an expert in German Shorthaired Pointers (GSPs) and other pointing dog breeds, brings her wealth of experience from Montana right to our listeners. In this episode, Gina engages in a fascinating discussion with Shannon and Michael White, a couple who have experienced the full spectrum of GSP ownership. They share their unique journey, starting from adopting a GSP through Gina's rescue initiative and then transitioning to purchasing a puppy from a reputable breeder. The conversation delves deep into the nuances of living with, training, and hunting with GSPs obtained from different sources. What are the challenges and joys of raising a rescue GSP compared to one from a breeder? How do training strategies differ? And what should potential owners consider when deciding between a rescue and a breeder? Shannon and Michael offer their firsthand insights, contrasting their experiences with their rescue GSP and their puppy from a breeder. They discuss the behavioral traits, the training journey, and the remarkable bond they've formed with both dogs. Gina, with her expertise, sheds light on the importance of understanding the breed's needs and the commitment required, regardless of the dog's origin. She also touches upon the mission and goals for her rescue. Whether you're a seasoned bird dog owner, considering adopting or buying a bird dog, or simply a dog lover, this episode is packed with valuable information, heartwarming stories, and practical advice. It's Independence Day in the USA!Hi friend, and happy 4th of July!I hope you have a great day, filled with family, fun, and some rest. We will be repairing the sprinkler system as two very naughty German Shorthaired Pointers decided to dig up and chew through the entire soaker hose array in our flower bed. I also have a pile of last-minute assignments my publicist dropped on me yesterday, in preparation for my book launch in 14 days! Hope is the First Dose is coming to you quickly, and we believe it will be extremely helpful in learning to hold onto hope no matter what you're facing. In case you have a few minutes of time to listen to a podcast today, here's a replay for Infinitely Happier 14: The Science of Freedom, to give you some thoughts on the value of declaring your independence from things that are hurting your life. And for today's daily dose of hope, here's a letter I wrote a while back that might help you find hope in freedom!I hope you have a great day, and that you're off with your family doing something fun. I'm going to give you a short thought today; perhaps it will help today be more than just a holiday. July 4 is Independence Day in the United States. We celebrate our independence from Britain, earned with the heroism and blood of the earliest Americans. The men who wrote the Declaration of Independence and framed our constitution pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to establish this nation on the basis of freedom. And now, over two hundred years later, I want to encourage you, no matter where you live, to embrace freedom. The Founders of the USA knew that freedom wouldn't come easily. They knew they would have to fight for it, go to war for it, that some of them would give their lives for it.But being free was essential to them; they knew they couldn't continue to live under the oppression of the British king any longer. They had to make a change. And today, perhaps there is some area of your life in which you need freedom. The good news is, science is on your side. Below are several possible declarations you could make today. Each one has a link to something helpful. I hope you find them useful. Depressed? Take control of your thoughts. You have the freedom and the neurochemical power to speak into your own mind and make it better. Sometimes you need medical help, but the research is overwhelming that the biggest secret to feeling better is to decide you want to, and start behaving as if you already do. Emotion follows motion, and no matter how bad things seem to you, I promise that if you start moving toward the place you dream of being, soon after you'll notice that you're feeling better.Struggling financially? Today, declare that you will begin paying yourself first. No matter how impossible it seems, saving ten percent of what you earn is not only doable, but it's necessary if you're ever going to be financially free. You deserve to keep some of the money you work so hard for. The science of finance declares that living on ninety percent or less of your income is the clear path to security and freedom from financial worry. Remember that the Founders pledged their lives AND their fortunes? Imagine how the country would have fared if those early freedom-seekers had been financially irresponsible in their earlier years. They would have had no fortunes with which to help fund the fight for freedom. Having savings and investments creates the power to choose a different path. And that leads to freedom. Trapped in a body that isn't shaped the way you want or doesn't weigh what you want it to? Biochemistry promises you can change that too. But you have to make a declaration. Today, choose to move more than you sit, to consume less than you burn, to take one less sip or pill or bag of whatever it is that's enslaving you and keeping you stuck in a place you're not supposed to be. To be free, you have to decide, act, and press on even when it's hard. Whatever it is that's enslaving you, keeping you from being free, you can declare your independence from it today.Remember, though, that the declaration isn't the end of the matter. When the founders put pen to paper and declared themselves free, they still had a lot of work to do. Battles to fight. A war to win.And even after it was all over, it wasn't over, because the English weren't ready to quit. In the War of 1812, the British actually captured and burned Washington, DC; freedom isn't final unless you're willing to keep fighting for it. So today, amidst the fireworks and the hot dogs and the parades, take a moment to think about the things from which you might need independence. Make your declaration, and commit your life and your honor to making it real. Make July 4 your personal Independence Day. If you want to become healthier, feel better, and be happier, pull out your pen and sign your name to the declaration. The Founders reached a point where they were no longer willing to live with the way things were. Freedom was worth everything to them.Is it worth everything to you?July 4, 1776 was Independence Day for them. They started that day.And so can you.Make a decision to be free, my friend. And start today. You can now pre-order my new book, Hope is the First Dose: A Treatment Plan for Recovering from Trauma, Tragedy, and Other Massive Things! On this episode of the Good Dog Pod, our host Laura Reeves is in Boise, Idaho at the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of American National Specialty. The scope of the episode is to talk about the German Shorthaired Pointers as pets, companions, showdogs, hunting dogs and more. Char, Bob, and Dave, our guests, all have immense experience with Shorthairs - over 30 years! What's it like to live with a shorthair? Shorthairs are described as energetic and athletic, they have high drive and are stubborn. They are full muscle, which is a good thing if you have room to burn that energy off. Once that energy is burned off (every day, not just on the weekends), they make as good of a couch potato as any dog.  Dock diving, scent work and agility are popular activities to vent off the energy that Shorthairs have. The breed is designed for ultimate versatility - they are not only hunting dogs - you just have to give it a job.  Char notes that they are an extremely people-oriented breed - it is the breed's temperament and personality that hooked our three guests who are sitting in on this podcast.  What is it like to go hunting with a Shorthair? It can be exciting and frustrating. They are a people-oriented dog and they want to please you - and as a hunting dog they will work with you. Being out in the field with a Shorthair is a beautiful thing, comments Char.  Health Requirements and Issues in the breed? When you are looking for a puppy, the first thing you should do is look at what the AKC has done with the GSPCA and OFA (CHIC Program), which are the minimal health testing requirements recommended by the Breed Club.  One problem in the breed is that Shorthairs have a reputation of being relatively clear of serious health issues. However, we have seen epilepsy pop up in the breed as well as cancers, cardiomyopathy and heart murmurs, among others.  Laura concludes the episode by asking our guests what the very, very best thing about a German Shorthaired Pointer is. What is it that makes them incredible? Check out the episode to find out what our guests said!

Kia Ora whanau. We’re back, refreshed after our one week break and storming right out of the gates with the indefatigable Dylan Bowman. Dylan has many fans in Australasia, having won Ultra Trail Australia and being a two-time Tarawera champion (and second fastest finisher of the original course behind Jim Walmsley). Dylan spoke to Eugene and Matt from his home base of Colorado and we went deep into his history with the sport, his current period of rebuilding, how he chooses to engage with others to affect change and of course, his love for German Shorthaired Pointers. We even learned about Lacrosse. We just had to ask which direction he prefers his Tarawera, and also why he has such an affinity for the 100 mile distance. As always, we spring the “”Greatest Run Ever” question on Dylan and are blown away by his answer. We were stoked beyond belief to get to spend time with Dylan, who was generous, engaging and candid. Enjoy!
