This episode is being re-released for your enjoyement. Please enjoy the episode. Natasha Helfer interviews Dr. Gina Ogden, PhD, LMFT (August 9, 1935 – November 2, 2018) on one of the most common complaints that get brought to sex therapists: low female sexual desire. Gina shares years of experience where she helps us ask pivotal questions to break this construct apart. What is it that we desire? Do women give themselves permission to experience pleasure? Gina instructs on her 4-dimensional model approach to what she calls the Integrative Wheel of Sexual Experience – where we delve into Body, Mind, Heart and Spirit. Walking through these four dimensions is an approach that allows one to take a holistic approach to such things as libido or erotic differences in partnerships. Gina Ogden is an award-winning sex therapist, family therapist, researcher, teacher, and author. She is founder of the Relational Sexuality Network, an international collaboration of practitioners whose mission is to expand the practice of therapy and sex therapy beyond limiting notions of function and dysfunction to include a wide range of diversity and experience. She conducts retreats and trainings internationally, lectures widely, leads tele-seminars attended by professionals all over the world, and has appeared in the media from talk radio to the Oprah Winfrey Show. She supervises and trains sex therapists, physicians, nurses, social workers, family therapists, and other health providers in the Four-Dimensional Wheel approach, to broaden their understanding of sexual experience. She conducted the only nationwide survey on integrating sexuality and spirituality. She is the author of ten books. Her most recent books for a general readership (all published by Trumpeter) are: The Return of Desire (2008) and The Heart & Soul of Sex (2006). The 3rd edition of Women Who Love Sex, was published in 2007. Her books for a professional readership (all published by Routledge) are: Expanding the Practice of Sex Therapy: An Integrative Model for Exploring Desire and Intimacy, (2012) and Extraordinary Sex Therapy: Creative Approaches for Clinician (2015)—an edited collection of innovative and creative approaches from colleagues in the US and the UK. "I wound up having this trauma happen at the hands of the vice principal. Well, then every time the intercom goes off for every morning's Pledge of Allegiance and secretarial announcements, I go into freeze and terror. And the meaning I created is "I'm not safe." - Dr. Keesha Ewers In this episode, Dr. Keesha Ewers joins me to discuss the connection between the freeze response and autoimmunity. We look at the body's freeze response during traumatic experiences and how those triggers lead to a pattern of nervous system reactivity. We also dive deeper into the freeze response and why it is more common in children. These traumatic experiences can lead to the formation of beliefs and adaptive behaviors that persist into adulthood. We take a deeper look at unresolved anger, specifically unexpressed anger turned towards oneself, and how it is associated with autoimmune conditions. The question we want to answer is: How is the freeze response behind autoimmunity? Key Takeaways: Why looking back and finding a moment when you wanted to die can be helpful How long a Biology of Trauma is happening underneath the surface before symptoms develop Why children experience freeze more than fight or flight You don't need to remember the story to heal 3 essential tools to reverse autoimmunity issues What it is like to apply the tools to yourself and to your patients/clients GUIDE “How do you know if you have trauma? And if you do have trauma, what is the next step? The good news is, there is a step-by-step process for identifying and healing trauma. Who shows up on your menstrual cycle? Roxanne talks about paying attention to the parts of self that come up as a window to our depths, the marginalized parts of self, and our under-worldly soul. Roxanne Partridge, of Embody Period, brings Menstruality - Sexuality Embodiment “From the Depths Up & Out”. She invokes the goddess and wild self in women through luscious words, provocative and artistic expression, imagery, and the depths and darkness. Roxanne supports women in connecting back to the source of themselves and awakening their vital and essential selves, sexuality, highlighting the magic of all stages of a woman's menstrual cycle, and sharing their stories as they are. Roxanne soulfully shares about: Inner Social Justice: befriending the marginalized parts of self that don't have representation in day to day life What happens as marginalized parts of ourselves meet the waking life versions of ourselves? The painful story that created the Menstrual Backdrop to her life and mission Space and creating space, making space, living in space, taking up space… space poetry Deconstructing the pathologization and silencing of women's cyclicity and the reduction of the moon cycle to “hormones” and reclaiming the beautiful and magical context of women's lives Death and Rebirth: the potential of every cycle The sensuality of bleeding Who shows up when you are bleeding or at different parts of your cycle? How do you carry the gift of renewal and imagine it forward into your life? How Soul is revealing Itself to you through your embodied experience Dr. Roxanne Partridge, CHt is known for inspiring and guiding others into embodying their unique, sustainable, fullness. Women, menstruators, and individuals seeking a safe, healing, and inclusive space to explore menstruality, sexuality, and embodied identity, are empowered through Roxanne's in-depth and creative approach. In her private practice and workshops, as well as in her writing and speaking engagements, she is an advocate for equal rights to imagination for images of female embodied experience. As a healer-scholar-activist, Roxanne has lectured and facilitated workshops at conferences for the Society of Menstrual Cycle Research, Seeing Red, Jungian Society of Scholarly Studies, International Association for Jungian Psychology, and the International Association for Analytical Psychology. Roxanne received her Ph.D. in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpinteria, California. Importantly, this paradigm sees troublesome emotional and behavioral symptoms, suffering, and questions of identity as invitations into a deeper and wider understanding of personal purpose, potential, healing, transformation, and embodied autonomy. Roxanne received her Clinical Hypnotherapy certification from the Santa Barbara Institute of Hypnotherapy and trained with revolutionary sex therapist Gina Ogden in her medicine wheel method of relational sexuality. I studied health promotion for my undergrad, and I remember thinking it was a little strange when one of my classes was completely focused on reproductive health even though it was supposed to be about general health throughout the lifespan. The reality is sexual health is not just something that comes up every once in a while. It isn't a "talk" you can have once or twice and check it off of your parental responsibility checklist. Talking about sexual health is infused into everything we do. If you don't believe me, listen to this episode. We all need to get really comfortable with this conversation. Our kids are going to look for this information one way or another. It needs to come from their parents. More than this, our culture is already steeping in sexual culture. If we don't talk about it and help our children recognize it, they will hear about it even without trying. Kristin shares an example of teaching her son how to recognize sexualized lyrics in the music he was listening to. I talk about subtle language that creeps into the way we talk to one another that prepares our children to consider boundaries and consent. It isn't always an explicit discussion about sex. It is talking about appropriate touch, red flags, safety, relationships, and interactions with one another.
