The Disagreement
The Future of Gender-Affirming Care & Trans Rights

The Disagreement

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 3, 2025 93:11

Today's disagreement is about transgender health care for young people and the future of the trans rights movement.Gender Affirming Care is a method of treating gender dysphoria by affirming a child's gender identity and tailoring medical and social interventions around this identity. This might begin with a social transition and often leads to a medical protocol that involves puberty blockers and then cross sex hormones.Almost a year ago, we had a conversation with leading national clinicians, Dr. Jack Drescher and Dr. Erica Anderson about the state of gender affirming care for young people in the United States. If you haven't listened to that episode, I highly recommend it as a helpful primer for this conversation. Since then, a lot has changed in the conversation about trans care for young people. In April 2024, the Cass report came out in the UK. It is one of the most thorough reviews of the evidence base for gender-affirming care. It also called into question the limits of what we know and don't know about care for minors. Right now, 27 states have enacted laws to ban or restrict the practice and the supreme court will be ruling on it later this year. And the United States has a new presidential administration who recently issued the executive order: “Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation," which attempts to put forth a national ban on gender affirming care.We ask some important questions around gender affirming care and the trans rights movement. Have trans advocates and medical practitioners overstated the quality of the evidence base for gender-affirming interventions for minors?Brianna Wu is a political commentator and trans rights activist. She is executive director of the progressive Rebellion PAC.Dr. Marci Bowers is a pelvic and gynecological surgeon with more than three decades of experience in healthcare. Dr. Bowers was most recently the president of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). She was the organization's first transgender president.Thank you to Brianna and Marci for coming together to have this critical conversation. It's a difficult topic and as you'll hear, a difficult conversation. But we need more of this. We need more people willing to come together and have hard conversations out in the open, and we really appreciate you both. This conversation is pretty “in the weeds” when it comes to youth gender medicine and the state of the research. If you have the context, that's great – you can skip ahead. If you don't, here is a highly efficient glossary:WPATH is the leading trans health organization in the world. Its “Standards of Care” or SOC - have served as the national guidelines for youth gender medicine in most gender clinics. The Standards of Care have evolved a great deal over time: SOC 6, published in 2001, required multiple psychological assessments and a period of Real Life Experience (RLE), living as the preferred gender, before any medical interventions. The most recent SOC, SOC 8, was published in 2022. It removed many of these requirements which activists have described as “gatekeeping.”The Dutch Protocol, also known as “watchful waiting”, is a more conservative alternative to gender-affirming care. It focuses on providing large amounts of psychological support and monitoring during childhood. If the dysphoria continues to persist, then putting young people on puberty blockers and cross sex hormones in late adolescence.Language around gender identity is constantly evolving. Brianna uses the term FTM (or Female to Male) to describe females who transition. For the same demographic, Marci uses “transmasculine.”We also talk about Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS).Okay, that will hopefully create a solid foundation. Take a deep breath. Open your mind as far as it's willing to go. And prepare for a different kind of conversation on gender affirming care and the future of the trans rights movement.Recommended Reading and ListeningWPATH Standards of Care Version 8Last year's episode of The Disagreement about gender-affirming care: https://podcasts.apple.com/si/podcast/12-gender-affirming-care-for-children-and-adolescents/id1735027795?i=1000658885782

My name is Silje Schevig and I am a clinical psychologist from Norway. In my podcast “Snakk med Silje», in English “Talk with Silje”. Dr. Erica Anderson is my first international guest. In this episode we are discussing the harms of puberty blockers and cross sex hormones. We also discuss how the society can influence more children to believe they are transgender and harm safe spaces for women. We also problematize how trans activism can also harm the patient safety and why there is an increase in girls with gender dysphoria.I am myself critical about gender affirming care to children and adolescents, especially medically transitioning children through puberty blockers. I think we do more harm than good in how we deal with this issue today. I met Dr. Anderson at an international conference addressing gender affirming care to children and adolescents.Dr. Anderson is a clinical psychologist and consultant helping gender incongruent young people and their families. In her TV career in Sweden, Erica broke barriers as the first openly trans character on prime-time TV in the series "Alt for Sverige", which led to her being nominated for two GayGala awards, she also won the award for transgender person of the year. She has previously been president of USPATH, which is the US Professional Association for Transgender Health and a board member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, as well as president of the Northern California Group Psychotherapy Society and chair of Joan's House Shelter. “The UK has now banned puberty blockers—probably will ban cross-sex hormones too, is my prediction, in the next few years,” said Leor Sapir, a fellow at the Manhattan Institute. He has been following the massive increase in children identifying as transgender and undergoing what's known as “gender-affirming care” treatment—from puberty blockers to double mastectomies.“[The World Professional Association for Transgender Health] commissioned systematic evidence reviews as part of the process of developing [Standards of Care Version 8]. When it found out that the evidence reviews, specifically for minors, were unimpressive and did not get them the results that they wanted—that would support their medical approach, they suppressed them. They basically instructed the researchers at Johns Hopkins University who were doing these systematic reviews to not publish them,” said Sapir. “Any way you look at it, WPATH greatly deviated from how responsible, trustworthy medical guidelines are supposed to be developed.”His current area of focus is the pushback to gender interventions for minors, including state bans, lawsuits, and a landmark case now at the Supreme Court.“This case has tremendous consequences for what's going to happen in the 26 states that have banned these interventions in minors,” said Sapir.Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.

Starting another Brand-New Hour— of The Steve Gruber Show—Coming to you Live from Studio G in the heart of AMERICA—I'm Steve Gruber—Fighting for you from the Foxhole of Freedom— AND revealing the real Deep Fake of the Deep State every. single. Day!   AND HERE ARE YOUR THREE BIG STORIES TO START THIS HOUR AMERICA!   Number One— Almost half of all Americans that bought EV's would not buy another one—and want to go back to a gas or diesel powered vehicle—no surprise—as it was just a matter of time—   Number Two— Nate Silver the man that started the 538 who is considered by many to be the Guru of election analysis—says Donald Trump is the heavy favorite to win in November—he says the race is ‘No Toss Up”—   Number Three— All eyes are on Atlanta for the first big showdown between Joe Biden and His predecessor Donald Trump—it's the first time 2 Presidents have ever met in a debate—and it's the first time one has ever been held this early in the campaign cycle—   Many are speculating the Biden team wanted this—to make sure their guy could go the distance and actually finish the race—but millions of people, including millions of people that voted for Joe Biden in 2020—have abandoned ship—for a variety of reasons—BUT the 2 biggest factors are the economy, that destroys Presidencies—and the border, which is destroying the country—   Tonight at 9 O'clock eastern we will get to the first real battle of the 2024 Presidential Election—when CNN holds the first debate in Atlanta, Georgia—with no audience—and no help from anyone—just a pen, a pad of paper and a bottle of water for each of the 2 candidates—   BUT what are we really going to get out of this—I mean I think, like Nate Silver, that most people have already made up their minds and this race is Donald Trumps to lose—   BUT CNN wants to boost ratings, without losing any more viewers in the process—does that mean they will take a more even-handed approach?    In a word, No. At least I don't think so—BUT they could prove me wrong—   Here is what is most likely to happen—   Dana Bash and Jake Tapper will throw more softballs at President Joe Biden than any debate in American history—and we all know why—     The two play for Team Biden, whose captain is unfit to lead and unable to do much of anything. And yet the show must go on.    Tonight's debate is in Atlanta, because Georgia is a swing state—and it is where CNN calls home—   And because Bash and Tapper are the moderators, and because “This is CNN,” the two will ask Biden softball questions—and I wanted to give you my best guess preview— but first—   Before you tune in tonight —you should know the ground rules—from the candidates perspective—   Bite #6   Here are some questions they will not ask President Biden, Here are the questions they should ask AND Here, too, are the questions we encourage President Trump to ask, because Bash and Tapper are too partisan to be impartial—that is what their track record shows us—   The pair should start by asking Joe Biden why he is running for re-election—   And also ask him what office he is running for— If he talks the way he has been several times lately and he mumbles and rambles a bit and never answers the question, we will know—   If his answer wanders away like he did at the G-7 or in Hollywood we will know—   AND YES, We have a right to know, because millions of us do not believe Biden is competent—   We believe voting is too important to suspend disbelief. And so, we find it impossible to believe Biden is of sound mind when his body fails him too—   He stumbles, falling on stairs and fumbling elsewhere. He should go away, before doctors—medical doctors; sorry, Doctor Jill—have to take him away—by way of the 25th Amendment—   If Bash and Tapper will not ask Biden these questions, perhaps they will ask him what his campaign is about— They should at least ask him to recite his campaign slogan—which is “Together, We Will Defeat Trump Again”—   If Biden does not know something this simple, if he cannot remember the words, six words in total, what does he know? Is it too much for him to say the words, when /WHAT/ we ask of him, is far less than what he asks—with increasing desperation—of his donors; to send him money? More money all the time!   Perhaps Biden can recite something shorter, like the three-word slogan on his website: “Finish the job.” What job does he mean? What jobs has he created? What government jobs has he cut? What bill has he signed, what executive order has he issued, without which the economy would be worse off?    Or does Biden mean to say he wants to finish President Trump?    Are we to trade our votes for a vendetta, so Biden and Merrick Garland can exact vengeance against President Trump? Are we to lose our right to vote if we do not vote the right way?   How about asking Biden if the 2020 election was fair?    Does he think a foreign company, Dominion Voting Systems, whose headquarters are in Canada, should have a financial interest in the outcome of our elections?    Here's a question: Why should Dominion have dominion over its source code, the code that governs its hardware and software, at our expense? Are we to believe Dominion is the one company whose machines are impossible to breach, whose data is impossible to hack? Please!   If these questions are too technical, if they involve too many moving parts, how about asking Biden how many parts we have?    How many genders are there, Joe? How about asking Biden about Tyler Cherry, the associate communications director at the White House?    Is the cross-dressing Cherry a man? Why was Cherry not man enough to be true to his words? Why did Cherry delete nearly 2,500 tweets in which he made anti-Israel, anti-semitic and anti-police remarks?    How many words has Cherry written for Biden? How many more words will Cherry write for Biden? How many more words will Cherry have to delete until Biden speaks like President Trump and says, “You're fired”?   And then there's “Admiral” Rachel Levine, assistant secretary for health at the Department of Health and Human Services. What about him/her, Joe?   Email excerpts from members of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health recount how staff for Levine urged the organizations to remove age limits for so-called “gender-affirming” surgeries for children. Reportedly, they succeeded: The draft guidelines, released in late 2021, recommended lowering the age minimums to 14 for hormonal treatments, 15 for mastectomies, 16 for breast augmentation or facial surgeries, and 17 for genital surgeries or hysterectomies. The proposed age limits were eliminated in the final guidelines outlining standards of care, spurring concerns within the international group and with outside experts as to why the age proposals had vanished— To recap, there is Cherry, a man who wears a fishnet top and lipstick, and there is Levine, a doctor who dresses like a woman and pretends he is a sailor. Confused? We are!   Is Biden proud of these men? Is Biden proud they work for him? Is Biden proud of their work?   If Bash and Tapper will not ask these questions, if they will not ask Biden to man up, they have no right to ask President Trump anything—   If they will not ask Biden to defend his policies, to explain his policies, by what right should we listen to anything Biden says?   If we do not question Biden, who will?    The press failed altogether 4 years ago to ask the feeble old man almost anything of significance—and we are the ones paying the price for their incompetence now—   A debate requires a minimum of two people. President Trump does not have an opponent to debate. About this fact, there is nothing to question. About the questions Bash and Tapper will not ask, there is nothing more to say.   Biden gets what he wants, easy questions. What we want is a leader. We want a president who can lead.   We are not asking Biden to leave.    We are telling him to go.   That subject is not open to debate—   But what will happen tonight is not just a likely pass for Biden again—BUT the predictable attacks on Donald Trump coming mostly from Bash and Tapper—aiming at the 34 bogus felony convictions for allegedly falsifying business records—and of course the attacks about January 6th—and maybe a lie of two about Charlottesville mixed in for fun—   The problem for CNN however is clear—if they are blatant about being on team Biden they will be rejected even more—and their ratings will fall even further—if that is even possible—I mean looking at recent numbers I am not sure the place once known as the most trusted name in news will ever recover—UNLESS of course Elon Musk does the right thing and buys the place out—and re-sets American media and the narrative once again—in defense of free speech—   Don't worry—because soon—all will be revealed—   And before I run out of time—here are some fresh comments that could be discussed by the two hack moderators at Chicken Noodle News—

What you're about to hear is a powerful and sustained disagreement with the current discourse on youth gender medicine and the more extreme voices who tend to dominate the public conversation. Gender-affirming care, as defined by the World Health Organization, includes social, psychological, behavioral, and medical interventions “designed to support and affirm an individual's gender identity” when it conflicts with their gender assigned at birth. How long should physicians and clinicians observe a child before they decide to treat them for gender dysphoria? When (if ever) should a child socially transition, begin hormones, and/or undergo surgery for their gender?Dr. Erica Anderson is an internationally recognized clinical psychologist and academic, specializing in Gender, Sexuality, and Identity. "Exposé of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, WPATH, files reveal these procedures are experimental. The doctors and therapists, either performing the surgeries or recommending hormones, they don't actually know how they're going to affect the bodies of young people or adults. WPATH files revealed that these so call experts knew that there were young people who were becoming infertile from the hormones, they knew there was one girl that got riddled with tumors from testosterone and yet, they weren't talking about that publicly and they were continuing to advocate for so called gender affirming care as if was this safe and tested, proven method to help trans youth and the media echoes that. These types of exposés help us to understand that the doctors and medical professionals involved here are not super interested in the facts and in science and in truth; they're far more interested in pushing an agenda and it is an agenda that is deeply hurting our children and our youth and our adults." “We are creating a generation of young people who are sterile,” says Miriam Grossman, M.D., a psychiatrist who has refused to submit to what she describes as the “religion” of gender ideology. “They will be consumers of pharmaceuticals the rest of their life.” Many of Miriam's clients fell down the rabbit hole of transgenderism during the COVID-19 lockdowns. They were “online 24/7.” When these young people turned to self-harm, the parents were afraid to hospitalize them, believing as Dr. Grossman does that “the adolescent psychiatric units in our hospitals are creating transgender children.” After revealing the role the American Psychological Association played in removing “disorder” from “gender-identity disorder," Glenn and Miriam discuss the now-discredited World Professional Association for Transgender Health and whether or not using someone's preferred pronouns after “social transition” is as compassionate as everyone says. After all the unethical “therapy” hoisted on kids, the parents are left traumatized, after realizing, as Glenn says, “Our doctors are not to be trusted.”   Sponsors  Better Spectacles Go to https://www.betterspectacles.com/beck/ and get your biometric intelligence glasses with artificial intelligence from Rodenstock for 61% off. Mia discusses the leaked internal discussions from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and highlights the lack of scientific evidence and the political activism within the organization. What happens when an organization with so much power strays from ethical standards and prioritizes political agendas over patient well-being? What role do autogynephiles play in leading the charge for widespread normalization of radical body modifications? How does the shift from ego-syntonic to ego-dystonic framing impact the treatment of psychiatric conditions, and what are the implications of the de-psychopathologization of gender identity for individuals seeking sex trait modifications?Join us as we navigate the complexities of gender dysphoria, questioning the validity of medical pathways and the true motives behind the trans rights movement. No one likes mammograms or prostate exams, but they can help spot cancer when it's treatable. For transgender patients, these cancer screenings are more than just uncomfortable, they force trans people to acknowledge body parts they no longer identify with. Not to mention the vulnerability and distrust trans patients have in navigating health care settings. Dr. Jamie Feldman is on the faculty at the Institute for Sexual and Gender Health at the University of Minnesota. Her published research primarily explores transgender health and medicine. She also co-authored versions seven and eight of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health's Standards of Care. Dr. Feldman joined MPR News Host Cathy Wurzer to talk about the barriers that transgender patients face to cancer screenings.

Nearly half of Canadians support banning sex change operations and life-altering hormone treatments like puberty blockers for children, according to a recent poll. However, more Canadians will want to protect children from the horrors of these procedures after hearing what a Canadian surgeon recently said about these radical procedures. Dr. Alex Laungani, a clinician at Canada's Metropolitan Center Of Surgery, told his colleagues at the World Professional Association for Transgender Health that the trans medical industry has grown too quickly and that there could be “a lack of training and not proper training.” He also highlighted the “pretty bad” consequences of genital surgeries. But the ceasefire is due to expire, threatening a return to the bloody fighting and bombardment that has devastated swaths of Gaza, killed many thousands of civilians and caused an acute humanitarian crisis. The third release of prisoners and of mostly Israeli hostages held in Gaza by Hamas took place without major problems on Sunday night. Israel and Hamas have each raised concerns over the lists of hostages and Palestinian prisoners due to be released on Monday, which Qatari mediators are now working to resolve. “There is a slight issue with today’s lists. The Qataris are working with both sides to … avoid delays,” an official briefed on the matter said. Seventeen hostages were released by Hamas on Sunday, including a Russian national and three Thai nationals. The Israelis were all women or children. Thirty-nine Palestinian prisoners, mostly children, were freed from Israeli jails, authorities said. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, has said he did not want to end the ceasefire but pledged that Israel would resume its military offensive in Gaza at the end of the truce. Netanyahu, who has promised Israelis he will “crush” Hamas, said he would welcome an extension to allow the release of 10 additional hostages every day in return for freedom for 30 Palestinian prisoners, as agreed under the original deal. Israeli officials insist they will not call off their offensive until they are certain that Hamas no longer poses a threat to Israel. Joe Biden said on Sunday that his administration would “continue to remain personally engaged to see that this deal is fully implemented and work to extend the deal as well”. Local media in Israel reported optimism among senior officials that the truce, which was the result of several weeks of complex indirect negotiations mediated by the US, Qatar and Egypt, would be extended. Sixty-two of the more than 240 hostages held by Hamas since last month have been released, one hostage was freed by Israeli forces, and two were found dead inside Gaza. A total of 117 Palestinians have been freed since the truce began. Between 13,000 and 15,000 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli offensive launched after the Hamas attack, roughly two-thirds of them women and children, according to the health ministry in Hamas-ruled Gaza. More than 1 million people have been forced from their homes. The UN says the truce has made it possible to scale up the delivery of food, water and medicine to the largest volume since the start of the war. But the 160 to 200 trucks a day is still less than half what Gaza was importing before the fighting, while humanitarian needs have soared. Details have emerged of the conditions of the detention of some hostages. Local media has reported shortages of food and medicine, and cramped accommodation possibly underground, but no physical mistreatment. According to one report, a former hostage has told his friends that his captors had brought other children to play with him while he was in captivity. Some learned of the fate of relatives from Hebrew-language radio networks they could listen to. Two teenagers learned that their mother had been killed and their father remained missing only when released. Calls from the hostages’ families to prioritise their release have sharpened the dilemma facing Israel’s leaders as they seek to reconcile the military offensive with the goal of freeing all of the captives. https://www.dailysignal.com/2023/11/23/new-biden-rule-reveals-transgender-movements-endgame-no-dissenting-parents-allowed/ Lack of ‘Affirmation’ Is Child Abuse: New Biden Rule Applies Transgender Standard to Foster Care The transgender standard is set to become a litmus test for parenthood, according to the logic of a new policy working its way through the Department of Health and Human Services under President Joe Biden. A new rule in HHS’ Administration for Children and Families would apply the idea that any lack of “affirmation” constitutes a form of child abuse to foster care placements. Once that idea takes root in foster care, child protective services agencies might start applying it more broadly. The rule would reinterpret the Social Security Act, which requires agencies to ensure that each child in foster care receives “safe and proper” care. The rule would lay out steps agencies must take to meet that requirement for “LGBTQI+ children,” defined as kids who “identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, as well as children who are non-binary, or have non-conforming gender identity or expression.” Before agencies place a child with a foster parent, known as a “provider,” that person must “establish an environment free of hostility, mistreatment, or abuse based on the child’s LGBTQI+ status;” receive training “to be prepared with the appropriate knowledge and skills to provide for the needs of the child related to the child’s self-identified sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression;” and must be able to “facilitate the child’s access to age-appropriate resources, services, and activities that support their health and well-being.” As the Ethics and Public Policy Center’s Rachel Morrison pointed out for The Federalist Society, the rule does not define “hostility,” “mistreatment,” or “abuse.” However, it does clarify that “a provider who attempted to undermine, suppress, or change the sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression of a child, including through the use of so-called ‘conversion therapy,’ would not be a safe and appropriate placement.” The proposed rule cites medical associations such as the American Psychological Association to claim that efforts to “undermine, suppress, or change” sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression “are not supported by evidence and have been rejected as harmful.” The rule does not acknowledge that gender ideology has infiltrated these medical associations and that many doctors—including those who once embraced gender ideology—have warned against confusing children on their gender and putting them on a path to mutilating their own bodies. Dr. Stephen B. Levine, a psychiatrist and early proponent of transgender medical interventions, joined and briefly helped lead the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association, which later became the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, the central medical group that organizations such as the American Psychiatric Association rely upon. European countries, long considered more “progressive” than the U.S., have found a lack of evidence for medical interventions on children and are recommending a “watchful waiting” approach for minors. Yet Levine argues that “affirming” a transgender identity is a “powerful psychotherapeutic intervention” that will set kids on the path to mutilation and sterilization—long before they have any concept about what their own fertility means. Under Biden’s proposed new rule, any potential foster parent who aims to protect a child from this confusion and damage may soon face expulsion from the program. That means the process will be designed to weed out guardians who actually would take good care of the kids and enable guardians who would assist in harming them. California’s Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, signed a bill turning California into a “sanctuary state” for “gender-affirming care,” which the law defines as an absolute right. The law gives California courts the ability to award custody over a child if someone removes the child from his or her parents in another state in order to obtain such “care” for that child despite the parents’ disagreement. https://dailycaller.com/2023/11/27/businesses-diversity-equity-inclusion-economic-uncertainty/ Businesses Ditch ‘Diversity’ Initiatives In Droves Amid Economic Uncertainty Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives lost steam in 2023 compared to previous years as companies increasingly shift resources due to tightening economic condition The total percentage of American organizations with a DEI budget dropped 4 percentage points, from 58% in 2022 to 54% in 2023, while the number of organizations with a DEI strategy fell 9 points in that same time frame, according to a report from a consulting firm. DEI initiatives in the workplace gained huge traction following the death of George Floyd, which encouraged companies to divert resources to the practice, but now “external forces,” including tightening economic conditions as well as public and judicial pressure, are pushing back on those efforts. “After two years of unprecedented investment sparked by 2020’s racial justice movement, this year, global momentum around DEI slowed,” according to the report from Paradigm. “There are a number of headwinds contributing to this shift: the first is economic uncertainty that not only led to reduced spending across the board, it also firmly shifted the power balance back to employers.” Despite the decline in funding, there was a 6-point increase in the number of companies that had a senior DEI leader and an 8-point increase in organizations that had goals related to representation for women in leadership from 2022 to 2023, according to Paradigm. A total of 20% of companies in 2023 had goals related to increasing employment related to race or ethnicity, which is a 4-point increase year-over-year. The shift follows concerns from companies that the Supreme Court could target DEI and race-based hiring in the workplace the same way it struck down race-based admissions at colleges and universities earlier this year. A pair of decisions by the Supreme Court in June involving Harvard and the University of North Carolina cumulatively ruled that using race as a factor in college admissions is not permissible under the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. “Over the past several months, we’ve heard from a number of HR leaders who are de-emphasizing data and analytics as a part of their DEI efforts, in response to the changing legal landscape and increased scrutiny on DEI efforts,” according to the report from Paradigm. Only 26% of companies examine the final results of hiring by race or ethnicity, while 33% analyze promotions in the same manner, according to Paradigm. Around 36% of organizations measured the attrition rate of their employees by race or ethnicity. Businesses pulled back from hiring in October, adding only 150,000 jobs for the month compared to 297,000 in September, while unemployment ticked up to 3.9% from 3.8%. The Leading Economic Index predicted that 2024 will only see 0.8% in the U.S. economy due to a possible recession. https://nypost.com/2023/11/26/business/ny-retailers-blast-hochul-over-theft-which-has-cost-stores-4-4-billion/ NY retailers lost $4.4 billion due to organized shoplifting rings in 2022: group Retailers across New York state say there’s no end in sight to the rising epidemic of organized shoplifting rings — and warn it could lead to more store closures, increased costs for consumers and threats of violence against store employees. Store owners said they lost $4.4 billion last year as a result of retail theft — which they say adds to the urgency for Gov. Kathy Hochul to crack down. However, Hochul vetoed a bipartisan bill last week — to the chagrin of store owners — that would have created a task force to combat organized theft. Hochul rejected a proposal that would have created a 15-member panel made up of experts appointed by the governor, Legislature and the state attorney general that would have put together a list of recommendations to respond to retail theft. The Retail Council of New York State, the Albany-based lobbying group which represents retailers statewide, said it was “extremely disappointed” by Hochul’s veto. Melissa O’Connor, the president and CEO of the group, released a statement saying that she urged the governor to take “immediate action” so as to formulate “an effective, collaborative response to this problem.” “She made it abundantly clear that retail theft prevention will be a priority for her administration, and we look forward to working with her to achieve results,” O’Connor said. A spokesperson for Hochul said that adopting the proposal would have cost the state $35 million — an expenditure that wasn’t allotted in the most recent budget. Law enforcement officials from New York City to Albany to Syracuse have reported increases in incidents of retail theft — blaming the spike on progressive prosecutors who encourages criminal behavior with lenient punishment for shoplifters. Last month, the chief of police in Syracuse said that the city has seen a 55% spike in shoplifting since 2021 — and that’s a conservative estimate. “That number is likely higher because businesses often don’t report it — but they do continue to express concerns,” Syracuse Police Chief Joe Cecile said. So far this year, the Albany Police Department has fielded 23 calls for larcenies at a single Stewart’s convenience store on Central Avenue — up from 14 at the same time in 2022. The rash of retail thefts at the location forced the owner to shut down. A New York Police Department spokesperson pointed to crime statistics showing that there were more than 93,000 incidents of petty larceny through the end of October — which is 29% higher compared to the same period two years ago but 5% lower compared to the same period last year. Around one-third of all shoplifting arrests in the five boroughs last year involved just 327 people who were collectively arrested and re-arrested a total of more than 6,000 times, according to the NYPD. These 327 alleged shoplifters targeted 18 department stores and seven chain pharmacy locations, which accounted for 20% of all complaints, the NYPD said.

The Cuban facility would allow Chinese intelligence officials to monitor U.S. ship traffic and to listen to electronic communications throughout the southeastern United States, according to U.S. officials with knowledge of highly classified intelligence, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. China reached an agreement in principle to pay several billion dollars to the impoverished Marxist-Leninist nation of Cuba, officials familiar with the matter also said. The Biden administration is especially concerned about the report due to Cuba's close proximity to the United States, and the fact that the eavesdropping facility could try to listen to communications from the many military bases in the southeast. U.S. intelligence indicates that the base would allow China to monitor communications ranging from satellite transmissions to emails to phone calls. This brings to mind the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, when the Soviet Union attempted to extend its influence in the Western Hemisphere, as the Journal points out. "The U.S. and the Soviet Union came to the brink of nuclear war after the Soviets deployed nuclear-capable missiles to Cuba, prompting a U.S. Navy quarantine of the island." This new report comes after China sent a spy balloon across most of the continental United States in February reportedly to gather intelligence from several sensitive military sites. More U.S. states are banning or considering banning foreign farmland ownership after China bought 370 acres of land in North Dakota about 12 miles from the Grand Forks Air Force Base. According to a 2021 Agriculture Department report, China owns approximately 384,000 acres of agricultural land in the U.S. Additionally, China is placing its own police officers in New York City to target Chinese dissidents, according to the U.S. Justice Department. https://www.foxnews.com/us/canadian-wildfires-pour-smoke-us-heavy-haze-creates-martian-like-scene-new-york-city Canadian wildfires pour smoke into US, heavy haze creates Martian-like scene in NYC Canadian wildfires are continuing to pour smoke along the East Coast of the United States, including the New York City area, which Wednesday afternoon, appeared red like it was on the planet Mars. Canadian officials have reached out to other countries to help fight the more than 400 fires across the country that have displaced 20,000 people. The Canadian officials also said this is shaping up to be the nation’s worst wildfire season ever, after being sparked on drier-than-usual ground and accelerating quickly. In Quebec, more than 100 fires were burning uncontrollably Tuesday. One of the biggest concerns from the fires is the air quality. New York City is experiencing its worst air quality in recorded history, per FOX Weather’s analysis of EPA historical data, affecting millions of people. NYC officials like Mayor Eric Adams and health and emergency management officials warned residents to remain indoors as much as possible and limit their time outside. If residents must go outside, officials suggested masking up. The governor also posted an update from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation and issued another Air Quality Health Advisory tomorrow for all of New York. Because of the smoke, the Federal Aviation Administration grounded all planes at New York City’s LaGuardia Airport on Wednesday. Delays are also expected at other area airports. Many other officials turned to Twitter regarding the fires. The mayor of Ottawa. Mark Sutcliffe, said he was very concerned about the conditions and sympathetic to those who have reduced lung capacity and asthma, and might be having difficulty today. Ottawa Public Health advised citizens to keep an eye on their health symptoms as the Air Quality Health Index continues to degrade. "If you experience symptoms such as tightness in your chest, wheezing or shortness of breath, seek medical attention," the agency said. We now turn our attention to Matt Walsh… https://www.dailywire.com/news/matt-walsh-undercover-investigation-catches-trans-health-care-providers-falsifying-patient-info-to-fast-track-sex-change-surgeries Matt Walsh Undercover Investigation Catches Trans Health Care Providers ‘Rubber-Stamping’ Sex-Change Surgeries Some of the nation’s largest transgender “health care” providers are rubber-stamping approvals for life-altering sex-change procedures — and even falsely representing health diagnoses of patients — so insurance companies will cover the medical expenses, Daily Wire host Matt Walsh revealed in a tweet thread Wednesday. In an undercover investigation, Walsh and his team discovered how easy it is to get approved for sex-change surgery when one of the host’s producers got a thumbs up for an orchiectomy — a procedure to remove testicles — after just a 22-minute virtual appointment with Plume, the largest transgender health care provider in the U.S. Walsh’s producer Gregg Re got scheduled for a video call with Plume after providing a fake name on an intake form. Re made it clear that he had not been experiencing gender dysphoria for six months or more, he mispronounced the name of the surgery he wanted, and he said he didn’t know what effect the surgery would have on him. Yet, Plume’s nurse practitioner told Re “she wanted to write the most ‘solid’ letter possible to justify surgery,” Walsh explained. Three days later, Plume sent a letter to Re, who said his name was “Chelsea Bussey,” saying Re was experiencing “significant, ongoing gender dysphoria” — despite “Bussey” stating unequivocally that this was not the case — and recommending “Chelsea” for testicle removal. Walsh said that in a text message to Re, Plume explained that the letters of recommendation are sent using a template based on standards provided by the radical World Professional Association for Transgender Health, also known as WPATH. Plume sells letters of recommendation for $150 to those seeking transgender surgeries. Now I’m about to play a brief audio clip for you guys… Gregg also tells Plume’s nurse practitioner that his father has been prescribing him hormones for years. The nurse doesn’t question this in any way. Instead, she says that arrangement is “perfect.” https://twitter.com/i/status/1666496338035367937 - Play Video Folx, another popular transgender telehealth service, also approves patients for sex-change procedures even if they are not diagnosed with “gender dysphoria,” according to Walsh. “Folx, which provides letters authorizing surgeries for a nominal fee, goes on to admit that ‘it’s quite possible’ patients will receive a letter indicating a gender dysphoria diagnosis, even though they ‘really do not have dysphoria,’” Walsh noted. “We reached out to Folx about this. Moving on… The White House may have a back up plan if SCOTUS strikes down Student Loan giveaways. https://dailycaller.com/2023/06/08/white-house-plots-backup-plan-scotus-student-debt-cancellation-overturn-biden/ White House Quietly Prepares Backup Plan If SCOTUS Strikes Down Student Loan Giveaway The Biden administration is quietly preparing for the possibility that the Supreme Court will strike down its controversial student loan forgiveness plan later in June, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The White House’s public position is that it expects the court to uphold the debt cancellation package, but several administration officials have conveyed private doubts about its prospects of survival upon review, according to the report. Behind the scenes, administration officials are exploring various legal and communications strategies to pursue in the event that the Supreme Court eventually overturns the signature Biden policy, according to the report. As you might recall, the federal student debt cancellation plan allows for millions of individual borrowers to cancel up to $20,000 in federal student loan debt as currently constructed. The court’s majority signaled its critical attitude of the sweeping policy action in oral arguments in February 2023, according to the report. Observers anticipate that the Supreme Court will issue a ruling on the debt cancellation plan later in June 2023. Biden administration officials privately have discussed more precisely targeted policy alternatives to the current plan, according to the report. However, it is unlikely the president and his staff will be keen to engage in another similar protracted legal battle should the administration opt to try a different legal approach to widespread student debt cancellation, according to the report. These preparations come on the heels of the bipartisan debt-ceiling negotiations, a condition of which included the resumption of student loan payments by Aug. 29 of this year. After that date, the administration is planning to establish a three-month grace period for borrowers who miss payments so that they will not immediately be considered delinquent to the detriment of their personal credit, according to the WSJ report. Administration officials have informed companies that process the affected loan payments of the plan for the grace period, but have not yet received other guidelines from the Department of Education (DOE) which were supposed to have been delivered in April, according to the WSJ report. The DOE is also considering options to work around a prospective Supreme Court slap down, seeking to expand targeted debt cancellation already available to disabled borrowers and public servants, according to the WSJ report. Additionally, the White House is making plans to highlight its proposed alterations to income-based payment options which the administration is to finalize by year’s end. And before we go today….. The practice was not without difficulty for Hamlin, however. At one point, he was slow getting up after a play and had to be evaluated by team trainers who seemed to focus on his right arm and shoulder, Alaina Getzenberg reports. Hamlin’s presence is not a complete surprise. He was cleared to resume football activities in April. Though, his full participation with a helmet may have come as a bit of a surprise to his head coach Sean McDermott. Before practice on Tuesday, McDermott said the team was “going to continue to take it one day at a time and just support Damar in every way possible.” He further said that Hamlin wasn’t practicing but was “in the building working.” Well, as seen in the video, he did much more than stay in the building. Hamlin was cleared to return by multiple specialists in and out of the NFL. Hamlin is entering his third season with Buffalo.

A staff member confirmed that a ‘diagnosis’ of gender dysphoria — with the word ‘diagnosis’ in scare quotes — is a ‘requirement’ for insurance purposes, even if it ‘doesn’t apply.’” Ari Groner, a licensed clinical social worker who educates doctors on “trans healthcare,” openly admitted in a video that those seeking transgender surgeries can easily get letters of recommendation. https://twitter.com/i/status/1666496309535072257 - Play Video Groner tells her audience to treat the letters as a “persuasive essay," and to green-light even suicidal patients. https://twitter.com/i/status/1666496312433336324 - Play Video Walsh and his team dug deeper into how Plume and Folx have expanded across the U.S. with Plume reaching people in 41 states and Folx present in 47 states. “The answer is that there’s big money behind this,” Walsh said. “Plume and Folx raised more than $45 million last year. How We Arrived At Current Standards Of Care For Trans Medicine So far this year, 16 states have moved to restrict or completely ban transgender kids access to gender affirming care. And 17 other states are considering similar laws, a handful even trying to restrict care for adults. This political controversy has drawn increased attention to “Standards of Care,” a set of guidelines written by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health or WPATH. Health professionals are encouraged to consult these guidelines when providing gender affirming care like puberty blockers, hormones and surgery to transgender patients. A new version of the standards were released last fall, sparking controversy. Some conservatives saw the guidelines as making transition too easy, and seized the moment to further restrict transition-related care. Some trans activists and health care providers felt the opposite, seeing the 2022 guidelines as too restrictive, creating unnecessary hurdles to life-saving medicine. How did we get to a point where one document is supposed to shape all of trans medicine? Guest host Maddie Sofia talks with Hil Malatino, Assistant Professor of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Philosophy at Penn State University, to put in perspective the history of gender affirming care.   How The Cherokee Nation Is Saving Culturally Significant Seeds Think about your family heirlooms—the most prized items passed down from generation to generation, that tell a story about who you are and where you come from. Did you ever think that seeds could be part of that story? This year, the Cherokee Nation Seed Bank is continuing its program to distribute heirloom seeds to tribal citizens, one that's been running since 2006. Last year, the Nation distributed almost 10,000 seed packets to citizens across the country in an effort to keep these culturally significant plants from being lost. This year, the Cherokee Nation is sharing seeds for a variety of Cherokee corn, gourds, beans, pumpkins, beads, and native plants and flowers. Guest host John Dankosky talks with Feather Smith, the Cherokee Nation's ethnobiologist, about how Cherokee heirloom seeds have been cultivated, planted, and preserved over the years. To see an image gallery of the Cherokee Nation heirloom garden, visit sciencefriday.com.   The Long Legacy Of The Alpha Wolf Myth Around the 1970s, the world latched onto a catchy new scientific term: alpha wolf. It described the top dog that clawed its way to the top of its pack, and it quickly became a mainstream symbol for power and dominance. The idea of the alpha wolf was debunked almost 25 years ago, but its legacy lives on. Most commonly, it's found in circles of the internet where men appoint themselves alpha wolf, and also in dog training. Strangely, those two things are connected. Guest host Maddie Sofia explores how science works and how people use it in their everyday lives, whether it's true or not. And a little about what happens when science goes mainstream. Maddie first talks with Dr. Dave Mech, senior research scientist at the US Geological Survey and founder of the International Wolf Center. His 1970 book “The Wolf: The Ecology and Behavior of an Endangered Species” helped popularize the term “alpha wolf.” But when he discovered that alpha wolves aren't really real many years later, he tried to right the wrong. Then, Maddie talks with two researchers about how the alpha wolf idea is still around today: Anamarie Johnson, PhD candidate and canine behavior consultant at Arizona State University, and Dr. Lindsay Palmer, social and behavioral scientist who studies the human-animal bond at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. They explore how biases and societal ideas shape science, and connect the dots between alpha wolves, masculinity, and dog training.   Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
