As a fund-raising effort to support the International Women's Brass Conference, Ms. Slaughter organized and produced the very popular Holiday Brass Concerts, which are now in their second decade, and are performed each December in the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis. Other cities in the United States are holding their own Holiday Brass Concerts to help support the ever-growing International Women's Brass Conference.   In 1996, Ms. Slaughter founded Monarch Brass, an all women's brass ensemble, which has toured in the United States and Europe to critical acclaim.   Susan appears regularly in area recitals and religious programs, and has been a frequent soloist with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, as well as with several other ensembles throughout the country. Many of these and other recordings have been nominated for or won Grammy Awards. Susan has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Kathleen Battle, Christine Brewer, Doc Severinsen, Al Hirt in duets, amongst others.   She has served on the faculty of the Grand Teton Orchestra Seminar and the National Orchestra Institute, and has been lecture/recitalist at the International Trumpet Guild, while also serving on its board of directors.   Since the 1980's, Susan has performed the National Anthem and “God Bless America” on an annual basis for the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Club and, at the invitation of the Baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent, performed the National Anthem at Game 3 of the 1991 World Series, played in Atlanta between the Braves and Twins (link).   Some of the awards and recognition Susan has received over the years include nomination by Ladies Home Journal for its annual Woman of the Year award, a special Leadership Award in the Arts from the Young Women's Christian Association, the American Federation of Musicians, Local 2-197 Owen Miller Award for loyalty, dedication and fairness in actions and deeds, and the 2007 Arts and Education Council Award for Excellence in the Arts.   Susan has studied over the years with Herbert Mueller, Bernard Adelstein, Arnold Jacobs, Robert Nagel, Claude Gordon and Laurie Frink, and retired as Principal Trumpet from the Saint Louis Symphony on September 1, 2010.   Podcast listeners! Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession- to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:15–23 “For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“ Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“ Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Dr. Armstrong explains what makes the adolescent so amazingly powerful and talks about how we can tap its wonders in the middle school and high school level with simple interventions such as bringing emotion into learning, providing students with physical movement as they learn, incorporating real life experiences like internships and apprenticeships, and helping students understand how their brains work. Thomas Armstrong, Ph.D. is the author of 20 books including his latest, a novel called Childless. His other books include The Power of the Adolescent Brain, Neurodiversity in the Classroom, 7 Kinds of Smart, Multiple Intelligences in the Classroom, and The Human Odyssey. There are over 100 foreign editions of Dr. Armstrong's books in 30 languages. Dr. Armstrong has given over 1000 keynotes, workshop presentations, and lectures on six continents in 29 countries, and 44 states in the past thirty years. His clients have included Sesame Street, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the European Council of International Schools, the Republic of Singapore, and several state departments of education. He has written articles for Family Circle and Ladies Home Journal, as well as a column for Parenting Magazine. Key Takeaways “What were they thinking?” A lot of things are going on in the teenage brain that were not going on 2-3-4 years ago. It's amazing that teenagers are as reasonable as they are given the neurological changes and growth happening within the teenage brain. The teenage brain can often seem that they have their foot on the gas pedal, but the brakes haven't been installed yet. They have an insatiable need for new experiences. The teenage brain fully develops around the age of 22-23. Giving teens the chance to make choices and take responsibility is important for their mental growth. Help your teen to self-regulate their emotions. Help them understand what the triggers are and then help them develop their own strategies on what they can do about it. Teens are looking for leadership, people who can help them learn things. Be sure that they are learning from people who have their best interest in mind. Help them find mentors in their area of interest so they can have hands on experience. The teenage brain is seeking reward. Social media plays a huge role in that need. Parents can tab into rewarding their teen in ways that satisfy that need without giving way to social media. We are born as geniuses with the joy and passion to learn. Over time, that can be diminished. As parents we can stop suppressing the things that they love to do. Let them have the experiences that help them decide what they want to move towards. Back in the 50s, the very popular magazine, Ladies Home Journal, ran a column called “Can This Marriage Be Saved?” It was one of the most-read magazine columns in the history of magazine columns!   This episode of GRUFFtalk picks up on where ‘Can This Marriage Be Saved' left off . . . and focuses on a topic that could help couples get closer and yes, maybe even save their relationships: better communication with your partner.  Host Barbara Hannah Grufferman is a research junkie and a few weeks ago she came across a new study stating that if one or both partners in a relationship avoids tough conversations about tough things, it could create emotional distress, bad feelings about their relationship, chronic inflammation, and negatively affect their immune systems.   Yes, bad communication skills between partners is not only one of the top ten causes of divorce, but it can also wreak havoc with your health. The good news here, though, is this is fixable!  The guest today is the lead author of a new study showing that when committed couples communicate with each other in negative ways – even something as innocuous-seeming as rolling your eyes -- both partners – and women in particular – suffer emotionally and their immune systems deteriorate, affecting overall health and wellbeing, and happiness.   This topic really deserves your attention because there are steps everyone can take to try to fix the most common communication challenges   Dr. Rosie Shrout is an Assistant Professor of Human Development and Family Science at Purdue University. She also leads the Relationships & Health Lab and her primary focus in studying how stress affects couples' relationships and overall health.   In this episode, Barbara and Dr. Shrout will discuss:  communication tactics that kill relationships  what happens to the body when tough topics are swept under the rug  how eyerolling and other subtle forms of communication can impact relationships  best tips to get your relationship back on track    More information about Dr. Rosie Shrout:  Follow on Twitter: https://twitter.com/RosieShrout  Academic Profile:  https://hhs.purdue.edu/directory/rosie-shrout/  Articles:  https://www.newswise.com/articles/negative-marital-communications-leave-literal-figurative-wounds?sc=dwhn&user=10024489  https://theconversation.com/amp/marriage-provides-health-benefits-and-heres-why-190731  https://theconversation.com/stress-is-contagious-in-relationships-heres-what-you-can-do-to-support-your-partner-and-boost-your-own-health-during-the-holidays-and-beyond-173071  Connect with Barbara:   Love Your Age: The Small-Step Solution to a Better, Longer, Happier Life  Barbara Hannah Grufferman website  Instagram @Barbara Hannah Grufferman  Facebook @BarbaraHannahGruffermanAuthor  Learn more about your ad choices. How do you feel about beauty pageants? In 1968, the feminist group New York Radical Women organized a picket of the Miss America Pageant and paraded sheep around the area to protest models being judged like animals at a county fair. These activists refused to talk to male reporters, which forced newspapers to call in women reporters from their usual assignments covering second-tier stories. And then they set up a freedom trash can and they piled in their bras and false eyelashes and put in copies of magazines such as Playboy and the Ladies Home Journal. These demonstrations at pageants spread to many other countries, including to the Miss World pageant held in England in 1970, where protesters threw flower bombs and disrupted the event with football rattles. And then in Scotland in 1975, a large group of women called the students signed up for a beauty pageant. And then on the day of the contest, they all stormed in together wearing overalls and no makeup, essentially hijacking the event. Whatever listeners think about beauty pageants, it's about to get more complicated. On today's episode, we hear a fascinating essay from Holland Allebes Anderson, granddaughter of the very first Miss World Kiki Hawkinson Holland Allebes Anderson grew up in Southern California. Meet Wah! Wah! is an accomplished musician, record label owner, mother, and one of the founders and leaders of today's global yoga community. Wah! has spent over 25 years teaching and performing, helping people relax, improving their health, and learning about compassionate relationships. Her CDs have sold over 100,000 units worldwide; if you have taken a yoga class in the last 10 years, you have undoubtedly heard her music. In 2011 iTunes featured her with a compilation titled "Greatest Yoga Music Ever." Her new book Self-Care: Building a Stronger, Smarter, More Peaceful Self brings people simple, effective ways to improve health and mood, manage stress, and prevent burnout and depression. She's been featured in Ladies Home Journal, Mantra Yoga & Health Magazine, and Yoga International Magazine.  If you've ever attended a yoga class or listened to meditation music, you have most likely heard Wah!'s visceral and transformational music. Wah! shared that her name has many meetings, including bliss and flower in Chinese, energy in Korean, and the concept of awe, as in 'there's nothing left to say' in Hindi. Wah! embodies this beautiful blissful and transformative flower-like energy. I hope you enjoy the music and heart connection at the beginning and end of this episode.      The Power of Humming Did you know that humming is one of the most healing things you can do for your own vitality, energy, and body? Wah! explains that when you hum, you are naturally calibrating to your body and cells. We all have this innate ability to heal ourselves through the power of humming. Through humming, you lengthen your breath and activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which is the rest and digest aspect of your nervous system. Humming creates a natural soothing and calming down of your body and energy.  All Energy Matters Wah! explains that every organism operates at 70hz and that when there is an illness like cancer, research shows that one's electrical energy can dip as low as 55hz. It is crucial to take care of, protect and honor your energy. You can use your attention to focus on different things that will help you to feel higher energy, like music, humming, appreciation, and self-care. Speaking of energy and frequency, she reminds us that we need to be mindful of all the intense energy we are surrounded by, such as our cell phones which can measure close to 1200 Mhz, and microwaves which also give off a lot of electromagnetic energy.      You Can Give Yourself an Empowering New Name (like Wah!) Just like Wah! taking on a name that motivates and uplifts her, you can do the same. Create a name you use to address yourself, like 'Outrageously Loving' or 'Ambassador of Light', or whatever might help you feel more connected to a way of being that truly empowers you. In case you were wondering what 'Jai Ma' means after listening to Wah!'s chanting on this episode, she explained that Jai means 'wow', or 'oh my goodness' and that sacred awe and 'Ma' means 'mother', 'divine mother', 'mother nature' and/or the 'connection to the mother energy'.   Final Thoughts Wah! shares with us an overall sense of empowerment. From knowing how crucial it is to protect your energy and raise it in times of stress to assigning yourself a new empowering name. There is no time like the present to begin this energetic transformation for yourself. At a time when the mentally ill had few treatment options, they created an outpatient clinic in Topeka that focused on mental health. But the family standout was Dr. Karl Menninger. After publishing his first book in 1930, he contributed to a widely read advice column in the Ladies Home Journal. In it, he offered his expertise to those who wrote in for advice on topics that included sexuality and relationships. Perhaps Dr. Karl should have heeded his own advice.
