I'm at The Groundlings Theatre for an Improv class. We're doing two-person scenes when our instructor says it's time for a drill. “This next exercise is a way to go deeper into your characters, fast.” For each pair, he instructs one person to start with a mundane statement about the other. The second person repeats the statement and adds something about what it means. Then it goes back to the first person to repeat the added-on part of the statement and add something else about what that means. Kymberlee: Carl, you look lonely standing here by the punchbowl all by yourself. Carl: I look lonely standing here by the punchbowl all by myself, and what that means is I'm not very good at social events. K: You're not very good at social events, and what that means is you prefer to have fun where you don't have to talk to people. C: I prefer to have fun where I don't have to talk to people, and what that means is I'm really into gaming. And so on it goes, until the instructor says, “Scene!” to end the exercise. That simple made-up scene gives us lots of information about our characters in only a couple of sentences. In our world, we as communicators have so much we want to share. But sometimes we get stuck in expressing the meat of it in a way that resonates with our audience. When you tap into your feelings, you get to the heart of your story faster! My guest today, Jane Lui, knows all about storytelling in a variety of ways. She does it through singing, composing, acting, producing, and so much more. In this episode, she talks about how she brings stories to life through her work with emotion leading the way and answers questions like: In what ways can you start to build your story if you're stuck? And how can you make your story more interesting for your audience? What you will learn in this episode: What really lies behind the magic of storytelling How you can structure your story to get people's attention How you can bring out the layers and multiple facets of your story Who is Jane? Jane Lui is a singer, songwriter, composer, and actress who goes by the stage name Surrija (sur-rye-ya). Originally from Hong Kong, she grew up playing piano. She immigrated to the Bay area and started listening to everything from 1930s oldies to 1990s Bjork. After obtaining her Bachelor of Music in Choral Conducting, Jane released three albums on Youtube that gained a strong following. Then she evolved into her self-titled concept album SURRIJA based on Picasso's lovers and demonstrated her own growth as both a woman and musician, from classical training to electro-pop artistry. The album, which received a 2021 Best Pop Album nomination at the San Diego Music Awards, features drummer Matt Chamberlain who has also worked with artists such as David Bowie and Fiona Apple. In addition to Chamberlain, Jane also collaborated with Kate Earl, Melissa Polinar, Son Lux, Tom Brousseau, Vienna Teng, and more. Currently, she's a cast member and co-music director of Lauren Yee's Cambodian Rock Band. She also composed for the theater productions All's Well That Ends Well and Secret in the Wings. Welcome to the first episode of Arts Calling! We begin by starting at the very beginning. I asked Brenda Zamora (my actress sister) to help me even slightly unpack some of the things we experienced growing up that made us into the creatives we are today. About Brenda: Brenda Zamora is a Mexican actress; she was born in Jalisco, Mexico, and raised in the United States in Wyoming. While attending Clark Elementary School, Brenda performed in her first theatrical play, followed by many more. Later on, she participated in the middle school choir at Davis Middle School, where she was fortunate to perform at the annual Wyoming State Choir Festival for three years. Brenda graduated from Evanston High School with Honors in Theatre and Performance Arts; she was a devout member of the Drama Society Club and became a member of The International Thespian Society. After moving to Los Angeles, Brenda has continued to study at the Groundlings Theatre, Castaway Studios, and The Complex Theatre. “What I love about being creative … is that space in risk, that beautiful space that you get to where you are scared out of your mind but equally excited, and there's nothing saying no,” says Krista Gano, CEO Working Artist Group and Innovative Improv Solutions. As a working mom who has spent her career bridging the gap between creativity and business, specifically in the entertainment industry, Krista loves diving into new creative opportunities, whether she's giving improv trainings to pharmaceutical executives or helping film writers refine their pitch. Krista moved from Los Angeles, where she was leading the world-renowned Groundlings Theatre, to Denver when her eldest son was just two months old -- and she started Innovative Improv Solutions at the same time. Now during the pandemic, Krista encourages other moms, and working artists, to give themselves grace, and make the most of this quiet time when we can't fall into the typical American hustle. Today I talk with a dear friend, collaborator and writing partner from my time in L.A. We met while studying improvisation in the early 90’s at the Groundlings Theatre and we performed in the theatre’s Sunday Company in the late 90’s. We chat for a while about creating characters for radio which inevitably leads to a conversation about Phil Hendrie. If you don’t know who Phil Hendrie is and you enjoy talk radio you need to look him up. I worked at the same radio station he did 97.1 KLSX Los Angeles. This was in the late 80’s, Phil Had not started the show he does now and Howard Stern was years away from syndication in L.A. I’ll have links at the bottom of the episode description. You should look him up because he truly creates theatre of the mind with characters and no sound effects. We also talk about some of the lame humor I attempted when I was on the radio and how I got some mileage out of terrible writing material. Also my guest’s various jobs during his time in hollywood and some of the great comedy clubs in L.A. that are not stand up but Improvisation like The Groundlings, Upright Citizens Brigade, Improv Olympic West and Second City Hollywood. You might try any of those theatres if you’re headed there for work or play and I think you’ll find it interesting and different from the usual touristy excursions. We wrap up our improv conversation with a class he will be teaching and how rewarding it is to see the growth in a student who takes the plunge and is brave enough to get up in front of their piers. Maybe you’ve seen the show Drew Carey used to host “Whose Line Is it Anyway?” but if you’ve never seen live improv before you really should. Theatre seems like it’s becoming one of the last shared live experiences and improv is even more so because the audience not only participates, but the show you see will never be seen again in that iteration and that makes for a truly unique experience. This Moron highly recommends it. Even Tina Fey recommends Improv and there is a link in the description from her book “Miss Bossypants” about her rules of Improv and how it can change your life and remove belly fat. Click yay (is there a "yay"button?), subscribe send money all that stuff but mainly thank you for listening to The Modern Moron. Oh, also we start off after both of us have just spent 40 exasperating minutes trying to work out the glitches with our microphones and headphones. Jessie fell in love with Phil LaMarr during his long run on MADTV, but that’s just one of hundreds of credits on his resume. He’s a charter member of The Black Version, a hilarious show at Los Angeles’s Groundlings Theatre and one of the busiest voice actors around. You’ve heard him on The Family Guy, Futurama, DC Super Hero Girls, Bojack Horseman, and scores of other animated shows and movies. He’s also appeared onscreen in Veep, Get Shorty, and Pulp Fiction, to cite just a few highlights. He has great stories to share, and Leonard and Jessie were especially blown away by his uncanny impressions. Have you ever heard anyone imitate Chris Rock and Don Cheadle?
