ACT MP Simon Court has recently introduced a members bill looking to scrap ‘alcohol licensing trust monopolies' which remain in Gore, Invercargill and West Auckland. This would change the system in these areas in which the licensing trusts decide where alcohol can be sold, resulting in no alcohol at supermarkets and very few bars. The bill has received a lot of response, with trusts in the South calling it an ‘Auckland-centric' view and undemocratic. For their weekly catch-up Producer Evie spoke to Court about the bill and the responses to it. They also talk about Mike King and the government funding for his mental health initiative ‘Gumboot friday', following controversial comments made by King. In a Newstalk ZB interview last week King claimed that ‘alcohol wasn't a problem for people with mental health issues' instead that it was a ‘solution to these issues.' Now the Labour party is calling for the government to suspend funding for the $24 million gumboot friday initiative. And finally they talk about Police being pulled back from mental health callouts, which began at the start of this month. The move has left health workers worried about their safety and how to deal with violence in the workplace.

Today on the show... Mental health campaigner Mike King answers the questions about the government's $24 million contribution to his charity I Am Hope. But it's also seen people give his charity fewer donations because they think he's now sorted, and it drives him bonkers! King says some in the media are making up damaging headlines and he wants to put it right. Tonight on The Huddle, journalist Clare de Lore and Ali Jones from Red PR joined in on a discussion about the following issues of the day - and more! Labour has called for funding to be pulled from Mike King's Gumboot Friday charity following King's comments that alcohol can be a solution for people struggling with depression. Is this a step too far? Consumer NZ is calling on the Commerce Commission to investigate New Zealand's aviation industry. Do we agree with this? The founder of Gumboot Friday has voiced his disapproval with authorities banning alcohol from a Dunedin event. Police are looking to stop a suicide prevention charity for applying for a temporary liquor license ahead of a fashion show designed to raise awareness. Mike King says this move is 'classic overreach'. "This is a bunch of young, polytech students who have a fashion show where they want to raise awareness and funds for a local suicide prevention trust. It has nothing to do with the trust - this is just an avenue for young people who care about the well-being of other people." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Gumboot Friday returns this week on 1st November, as communities come together to raise awareness for youth mental health around the country. This year's event involves the auctioning of the Hope Home, built and donated by Fowler Homes, with the proceeds going back into I Am Hope. It comes as founder Mike King had his custom e-bike stolen from him during his I Am Climate ride around the country to raise awareness for youth climate anxiety, which has been returned to him in Tauranga. Mike King joined Tim Beveridge to discuss more. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Prime Minister is signalling potential intervention in Wellington City Council. It comes after the council has been forced back to the drawing board on its Long Term Plan, after a $400-600 million budget shortfall from backtracking on its airport shares sale. Mayor Tory Whanau says she hasn't heard anything from the Government about intervention. But Luxon told Mike Hosking they're keeping an eye on the council. He says if they need to intervene, they will. Luxon is also standing by the decision to pour $24 million into Gumboot Friday. Auditor-General John Ryan has found the project was funded without an open and transparent process. Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey has pointed to the Ministry of Health as being responsible for its implementation. Luxon told Hosking that National had campaigned on backing Gumboot Friday and agreed to the investment with New Zealand First. He says the Auditor-General can write its report and say there are things that could be done better, but the bottom line is he's backing it. There was good news for mortgage holders yesterday as the Reserve Bank lowered the official cash right by 50 basis points. Are our politicians hoping for another 50 basis point drop later this year? Also, the Auditor General is highly critical of a $24m contract awarded to Mike King's Gumboot Friday charity without a competitive process. Was the government out of line? To answer those questions, Labour's police spokesperson Ginny Andersen and National's Wairarapa MP Mike Butterick joined Nick Mills for Politics Thursday. The Auditor-General has criticised the awarding of a $24 million dollar government contract to fund Mike King's Gumboot Friday iniatiative. In a letter to the Health Minister, John Ryan said several aspects of the procurement process are "unusual and inconsistent" with good practice, Anusha Bradley has been looking into this and spoke to Lisa Owen.
Health NZ wants to cut four chief medical officer roles. Health New Zealand (HNZ) wants to reduce the number of chief medical officers, from 18 to 14 nationwide, while also promising not to cut front-line medical roles. The Reserve Bank has cut the official cash rate by 50 basis points to 4.75%. Finance Minister Nicola Willis celebrated the “fantastic news” of the falling OCR, while major banks immediately responded with their own interest rate cuts. The $24 million contract awarded to Mike King's mental health charity by the National-led Government was “inconsistent and unusual” and the Ministry of Health did not fully inform ministers of the risks. ================================== Come support the work we're doing by becoming a Patron of #BHN www.patreon.com/BigHairyNews Merch available at www.BHNShop.nz Like us on Facebook www.facebook.com/BigHairyNews Follow us on Twitter. @patbrittenden @Chewie_NZ

Mental health advocate Mike King says the Ministry of Health keeps giving him red herrings over why it won't fund his Gumboot Friday. The initiative provides free counselling for young people across the country. The Ministry says the request for funding was made outside the required timeframe. But King told Heather du Plessis-Allan he doesn't thinks that's the case and says he's willing to put all of the Government money to counsellors."No one is delivering 100 percent of government money where it's supposed to go. I've offered them the Gumboot Friday platform, take it off my hands, have it for free. It just keeps falling on deaf ears."LISTEN ABOVE
I feel bad for Mike King, not just him actually, but for every family he's tried or is still trying to help and can't get funding for.Yesterday the government told him they're not funding Gumboot Friday to provide free counselling for young people struggling with mental health. I find this ironic given the government's talked a big game on mental health, handed out 1.9 billion for it, acknowledged it's a problem, say their work is ongoing, yet they're not supporting this. It's also ironic they can find the money to fund a cycle lane over the Harbour Bridge for a handful of Auckland cyclists, but they can't find money for this. Likewise, they can throw 50 million at a slush fund to look for alternatives to cotton buds, but they can't fund this. There are plenty of examples of money being printed and handed out from the Beehive and I'm just not sure how this one doesn't make the cut.Our mental health stats are woeful. The government's well aware of it, has had solutions offered to them, people with practical tangible answers and it still says no.Does the rejection of this funding go hand in hand with Mike King speaking out against the PM and returning his New Zealand Order of Merit?I would hope not, but the timing's not great is it. King says he's devastated by this, mainly because of the devastation it'll have on families already battling with mental health services, already struggling to pay, or get access, or get attention in this sector. The services are over run, the system is broken, ask anyone whose had to deal with it, it's just not catching all the people it needs to. It is failing people on a regular basis. The Ministry, in rather a condescending tone, said of its rejection of Gumboot Friday funding that there is ‘more work to be done' in this sector, and that they share Mike King's passion and commitment. The PM made the same utterances. But that's all it is, empty words. The rubber, literally, was hitting the road here with King's work, and they've just shut the door on it.We had Mike King on the show recently when he was returning his medal; he was aggrieved about the lack of transparency on where that mental health money the government had packaged up in 2019 had gone. Turns out only 5 extra beds had been added to facilities over two years. Minister Andrew Little said he was ‘frustrated' and there was general acknowledgement it wasn't good enough. But tut tutting the failures and making promises like ‘we'll try to do better', don't really cut the mustard for a guy like King who's been on the front line and has to face these families on a daily basis. What do you even say to families who are at absolute breaking point, when a government that pretends to care, clearly doesn't care enough? So when King says he's devastated this week, I completely understand why.

In the 1970s, 34 young women left cities across Canada to find a different lifestyle and build community in rural, coastal Prince Rupert, BC. Many were unsatisfied with the cold, modernist landscape of cities, and some just wanted an adventure. Their stories are documented in a new book, Gumboot Girls. On the podcast, we hear some of their tales and explore the reasons why these women migrated and their experiences in the small, rural - and booming ? resource community of Prince Rupert. We conclude by discussing whether this vision for an alternative (non-urban) lifestyle is possible or desirable for young people today.
