Gemma & Tom Otton, farm in the Bega Valley at Candelo. Although they are both first generation dairy farmers, agriculture has always been in Tom's blood. But entering into dairy isn't always an easy process. How do you get a loan for cows and pay it back, manage cash flow, what do you include in a share farming agreement, how do you juggle farming and raising kids, and prepare yourself for fires, droughts? They are all things Gemma and Tom have worked their way through, starting out on a lease farm, spending almost 2 years in South Gippsland and having been back in Bega for almost 5 years now as share farmers.  This is Gemma & Tom Otton's story.  In the spirit of reconciliation we would like to acknowlegde the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. Michael Armstrong farms in Korumburra, where he has been share farming for the last 18 years and is currently milking 900 cows on a 50/50 share. Although it hasn't been easy, the asset growth they've seen has certainly allowed them to build their dairy farming business. They have recently purchased their own farm, and built a new herringbone dairy where they milk another 400 cows, but has the capacity to double that.  Throughout this chat he gives great insight into how they've set their share farming agreement up, how they've grown the business, used export heifers to fund their land purchase, how they rear every calf that's born and manage the wet pastures of South Gippsland. He also shares very openly his financial drivers and the luck they've experienced previously with a good milk price and high profit export markets that has seen them grow to the position they are in today.  In the spirit of reconciliation we would like to acknowlegde the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.  If you know someone who you think would be great on the podcast, or you would like to share your story, please get in touch by sending an email to podcast.morethanmilk@gmail.com or stay connected by following us on Instagram or Facebook and send us a message - I'd love to hear from you.

The bodies of a father and his five young boys were last night being uncovered from a devastating fire in Queensland that destroyed one home and badly damaged two others.  The mystery surrounding Sam Kerr's calf injury deepens, with helicopter footage obtained by News Corp showing the superstar striker still sitting out the majority of training.  The ACT's embattled Director of Public Prosecutions Shane Drumgold has quit over damning allegations of misconduct in the rape trial that rocked the nation.  Police were last night probing whether foul play was behind a fatal mushroom poisoning which left three people dead and a fourth fighting for life in Victoria's South Gippsland region.  Tens of thousands of TAFE SA students would have greater course choice and study at potential new campuses as part of a new regional push to revolutionise vocation training and help solve the skills crisis.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Having a voice is about so much more than talking, or even communicating. Finding your voice is about walking the difficult but rewarding path from being invisible, silenced and ashamed, to being heard, understood, and seen. When Amy started her bookkeeping business in 2015, she found clients difficult and at times abusive, which left her feeling isolated, stressed and questioning her own abilities. After connecting with other bookkeepers, Amy realised that many bookkeepers had the same struggles, experiences and often felt isolated in their business. Whether trying to communicate with a difficult client or set boundaries many felt undervalued and overwhelmed. When Amy started The Bookkeepers Voice Podcast, she wanted a way for colleagues in the Bookkeeping industry to feel less isolated, more connected and know they were not alone. Through sharing real experiences of what it's like running a small bookkeeping practice, and teaching of topics of interest, Amy makes you think, laugh and know you're not alone. In this episode, Amy tells her story of how she lost her Voice: literally. On 8 December 2022, she was heading to South Gippsland with her two sons and husband Will, to visit her dad for the weekend. But less than 30 mins into the trip, Amy felt unwell and became unable to speak normally (Aphasia). Will called an Ambulance and Amy was taken to hospital to be assessed for a stroke. Instead, she was Diagnosed with functional neurological disorder, a condition where there is a disruption between the brain and a function of the body. ironically, the disruption occurred between the one function that forms the basis in the foundation for the work Amy most loves to do - speaking, encouraging, telling stories, teaching and training, and giving Bookkeepers running businesses, a voice. Amy recorded this episode about a week after she came home from hospital, and although she had made a great deal of progress in recovering her voice, but the voice you will hear this episode isnot the one you are used to hearing. Since this episode was recorded, Amy's voice returned to normal, but has also had to further episodes causing a relapse of Aphasia. Amy is currently taking some time off work to recover, and to decide on a future direction that will take into consideration, her reduced work capacity. At this stage, the future of the Bookkeepers voice podcast, and The Savvy Bookkeeper is unknown. But we will post an update as soon as possible. Amy would like to express her gratitude to podcast listeners, and savvy members. You have given Amy a sense of purpose and joy in business. We ask that you would lift Amy and her young family up in prayer, and for healing and protection over Amy's voice, and for Savvy, a business Amy worked so hard to build. That it would not be wasted or destroyed.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Austin Cram started a micro sanctuary called Tonie's Raynebow, following the sudden passing of his partner Tonie. The sanctuary is located in South Gippsland, Victoria and is home to 29 rescue animals. Austin grew up in suburban Melbourne with cats as companion animals. Being raised with companion animals taught Austin many lessons about caring for animals as well as managing the health struggles of aging animals. During year 12, Austin learnt of town planning and was intrigued by the integration of architecture, design and social sciences. Upon graduating high school, Austin enrolled to study town planning. He also met his partner Tonie at high school and began dating when they were in year 12. The couple made plans for their future, which included starting a sanctuary. In 2018, Tonie unexpectedly passed away from an undiagnosed heart condition.  Feeling lost, Austin drew on the strength of the couple's companion rats and a passion for rescuing animals. Austin purchased a 12 acre property in Gippsland and gained employment as a town planner locally.  Tonie's Raynebow is currently home to 17 roosters, 3 geese, 3 sheep, 3 cows, 2 goldfish and a dog Bella. The property is also home to Giant Gippsland Earthworm colonies, which are listed as a vulnerable species. Austin recently received funding to fence and revegetate the creek. Austin always had an interest in politics, however he was unsure if his views would be accepted by the broader community. Soon he discovered the Animal Justice Party (AJP) aligned with his personal values and was encouraged to consider running as a candidate.Austin has been endorsed as the AJP Lead Upper House Candidate for Eastern Victoria in the upcoming State Election. He also understands the importance of having young people represented in politics and has been elected Co-Chair of the Victorian Young Animal Justice Party branch.  Austin is an absolute powerhouse! If running his own micro sanctuary and being a candidate isn't enough, Austin still manages to find time to help other organisations such pig and dog rescue organisations.  In this episode, Austin shares the unique stories of sanctuary residents, as well as going vegan after completing Veganuary. https://www.instagram.com/toniesraynebow/https://www.instagram.com/austin.cram.ajp/

Episode 82 of the Bees with Ben podcast focusses on the transition from hobbyist to full-time commercial beekeeper, with the aid of Ben's special guest, Matthew Petersen from Dividing Creek Farm. Matt says he grew up on a dairy farm with a large orchard, and his dad always had five or six hives, so he was bitten by the bee bug very early in life. However, Matt's father passed away when he was still quite young, and Matt moved to Melbourne to make money to buy the farm. He tells Ben he started an epoxy flooring business installing hygienic flooring systems in food processing plants, abattoirs, and fast-food businesses. His main customer base came from the food industry, and it gave him some insight into food production. He realized how much he missed the bees and raised nucs to fill in time and to maintain the connection between bees and the farm. For Matt, the whole reason for raising capital through his business was to enable him to purchase the beef farm near Wilsons Promontory in south Gippsland, where he raises Angus, grass-fed beef - bees were always on the side. But when the bug really kicked in in his mid-20s, Matt found himself juggling a flooring business, a farm, and the bees, and he was simply wearing himself out. He reckons the transition to full-time beekeeper took about seven years and says that any hobbyist wanting to go full-time will experience a similar situation, in that you need capital, a job, or some form of back up until you get yourself established. Ben agrees. Interestingly, Matt reveals that for him, Covid was the final trigger, since lockdowns and the inability to travel interstate meant that he lost much of his flooring clientele overnight. Ben asks Matt to tell us his biggest highs and lows with bees, and Matt says the biggest high is seeing people consume your product and really enjoy it. His biggest low came this season when he lost 40% of his hives in a flash flood. He had 120 hives set up to go onto red gum on an old, dry creek bed near Bendigo when a freak storm cell dumped 70ml of rain in twenty minutes about 20km upstream. Matthew says there was no warning, and it didn't even rain where the bees were, but they were struck by a four-metre flood, and he is still finding boxes 15km downstream. Matt says it was heartbreaking, but you only get a sore neck looking backwards! https://www.facebook.com/dividing.creekfarm

PODCAST EPSIODE 71: Bron Barton, President of the South Gippsland Beekeeper Club, Korumburra With the rise of bees in the consciousness of the public as people come to realise their role as the world's most vital pollinators, beekeeping clubs have also risen in popularity. Beekeeping clubs offer a range of amazing resources for new and professional beekeepers, but they are especially useful for those just starting out or traversing the early stages of their hobby or career. With COVID-19 bringing a halt to some face-to-face activities and club sessions, beekeeping clubs are finding new ways to connect with their members while we wait patiently for life in much of Australia to open back up. It's important for the bees, but also for our mental health, to keep connecting with others about things you love, and I have seen how beekeeping clubs have brought incredible joy and belonging to so many people over the years. For this love of beekeeping clubs, I am delighted to bring Bron Barton, President of the South Gippsland Beekeeper Club to you for episode 71 of the BEES WITH BEN beekeeping podcast. Reflecting on a fantastic piece of writing by Bron from 2016, the third season of the South Gippsland Beekeeper Club is a “tale of sadness, excitement, thrills and eventual triumph”. Bron is candid about the ups and downs of the season, describing it as “quite a mixed bag” of experiences. There were huge swarms that would “surprise and shock even the most experienced and hardened beekeepers”. Bron's incredible sense of humour shines through as she describes the Italian bees, who had been feasting on Chianti and Bolognese, that took off in droves with “Squeals of laughter and loud rambunctious raspberries were blown as they flew away again and again and again!” As Bron and Mr B – the two “Grand Poobahs of Ineptitude” – check in on two apiaries to see how their colonies are faring, readers are taken on a wild ride. There is much learning that happens along the way (not to mention a sting or two) – a delightful and hilarious account of the everyday experience of learning to keep bees. Tune in to hear Bron and I chat about the importance of beekeeping clubs, her role as the President of the South Gippsland Beekeeper Club, how she started keeping bees, and why bee education is so vital to the health of the planet and the joy of humans. http://www.southgippslandbeekeepers.org.au

PODCAST EPISODE 30: Peter Gatehouse from Hill Top Hives, South Gippsland, Australia It's quite uncanny, but there are many remarkable stories of transformation that centre on bees. It seems to me that bees often enter someone's life and a change in perspective, even career, ensues that is fulfilling in a way that person needed quite deeply. These stories – which are told quite often – give me goosebumps. Of course, there are logical explanations that might lead a person to fall in love with bees, but I still feel there is some magic there – the world's most remarkable creatures helping us out, making our days brighter, showing us how to live in a simpler, more natural way. Peter Gatehouse of Hill Top Hives has one of these stories, and I am thrilled to introduce you to him in episode 30 of the BEES WITH BEN beekeeping podcast. Peter was born and raised in Melbourne and moved to South Gippsland with his partner Margaret and young family in 1991, where they settled in Mirboo North. Over the years, the family grew their garden; a special place, that transformed over time, and was even home to some happy chickens and geese. When bees seemed like the next step in the garden's evolution, Peter was excited to welcome them to the property – he knew that bees would be helpful to pollinate his flowers and that he would eventually garner some delicious honey from them when the time was right. However, he was unaware of how these bees would change his life. After an unforeseen redundancy after many years as a medical scientist, Peter had the time to commit to his ever-growing passion for bees, and before long, a humble beekeeping hobby blossomed into Hill Top Hives! Hill Top Hives produces local wildflower honeys that display unique colours and flavours specific to South Gippsland, providing customers with honey that they can be confident is sourced locally and ethically. Peter also sources other mono-floral honeys for his customers from other reputable sources when available. In addition, Hill Top Hives offers beautiful beeswax lip balms, wraps, candles and, soon, soaps. Peter also leases hives, manages other people's hives and offers a consultancy service. Tune in to hear Peter and I chat about Hill Top Hives, how his scientific background has bolstered his ability to diagnose illness and disease in the hive, and sustainability in local beekeeping. www.hilltophives.net.au

Today, we speak with Burke Brandon from Prom Country cheese from South Gippsland, in Victoria. An area very close to my heart not just for incredible cheese, but wine, beaches and more. What I loved about talking with Burke is that he is a farmer first and his connection to his land and animals, then to his cheese, is self-evident. And so is his humility. The phrase ‘humble farmer' may at times be a throwaway line but I can't think of a better way to describe him. There is a humble pride for the cheese he makes and I know you'll hear what I mean as you listen on … especially for his new ‘secret project' cheese. Burke and his wonderful wife Bronwyn, open their cheesery and country kitchen over the spring and summer months so if you find yourself that way, do pop in and say hi, and, if you're lucky, you may get to try one of Bronwyn's legendary sausage rolls. I can attest this personally but please don't mention my name, as I'll no doubt get in trouble as they are only ever in short supply. Just as well they have wonderful cheese and wine as back up. We're big fans of Prom Country and we know you will too.

#114 My lovely guest this week is Judy Millington, a recent Live In Flow Retreat attendee. Her journey is incredible, and I reached out to her and asked if she would come on the show to share. Enjoy! Show notes from Judy's journey: Judy is a country girl at heart having been blessed to spend her youth on 150 acres in South Gippsland, Victoria, with a creek bordering two boundaries, sheep, cattle and a veggie garden. This was an era in the mid-70s to mid-80s where farming was organic without the fancy label. Despite the fresh air, climbing trees and frolicking amongst the rolling hills a particular event, just prior to her teenage years, had the impact of ‘freezing’ Judy in time. A cascade of physical symptoms from a general feeling of unwellness, nausea, stomach pain, unwavering fatigue, foggy head and lack of clarity have ensued over the course of the last 40 years to varying degrees. A relentless search for ‘answers’ since her teens and a barrage of medical and functional practitioner visits, countless tests, protocols, nutrition and supplementation has at best enabled short term respite. Judy began to work with Dave O’Brien at 5th Element Wellness, as a result of Judy’s body breaking down, which lead to the introduction to Guy Lawrence’s Let It In Academy and more recently the Live in Flow Retreat facilitated by Guy, Matt Omo and Petra Brzovic. For the first time Judy started really looking within, as the source of her physical symptoms. Judy was also undiagnosed post-partum depression at the birth of her daughter and has carried guilt around this for the last 19 years, of which there was a massive at the recent Live in Flow Retreat. More than anything Judy is so grateful that her husband, without dipping his toe into any of this work prior, on faith joined Judy at the retreat to support her. It became clearly evident on day one that he had his own journey to take, but that is another story. Through becoming present for the first time in her life and being more aware and accepting of her inner dialogue, thoughts and feelings Judy’s axis is shifting back on course (and continues to positively impact all areas of her life). Judy subscribes to the notion that there is no magic external pill to fix all ills, but firmly believes all that we are seeking and all the resources we need to feel whole are already within us.   Learn More about Live In Flow Retreats: www.liveinflow.co Learn more about Guy: www.guylawrence.com.au Let It In Academy: www.letitin.com.au

In today's programme we are going to look at what is happening at one of Australia's oldest oil and gas fields Longford 20 kilometres from Sale in South Gippsland, Victoria. After more than 50 years the oil reserves are running out and the way Exxon Mobil subsidiarity Esso is dealing with worker negotiations is raising eyebrows.  We will follow that with a look at Coates Hire Workers who are taking action around the country for better conditions at work. Many of these workers are isolated in small teams but despite this they can see the importance of solidarity in fighting owners of Coates Hire who are continuing to demand a pay freeze and to slash conditions.
