Dear VoiceHeads,Welcome to episode 3 in the series. Here we take a trip to Wembley Stadium (I beg your pardon? I don't even know what a green screen is!) and do a breakdown of Freddie Mercury's vocal technique on lesser-known Queen hit, "It's A Hard Life", track 3 off of album 'The Works'. We talk Chest Voice, Head Voice, vocal rasp and distortion, but I try to keep it 'in the parlance of our times' as Maude Lebowski would say.Audio quality's a little less than you've come to expect- apologies on that! Shower was running and my software plugin C-Vox left just a little static around the edges. Hopefully you stay riveted with my comedy and insights.allvoicemedia.com/backstage
From early mystic folk inclinations to more fried and psychedelic work, Ben Chasny's Six Organs of Admittance project has never settled into an easy, definable zone. But 2024 sees the Six Organs sonic universe expanding kaleidoscopically, even by Chasny's prodigious standards. First was Time Is Glass, an album that documented his return to Humboldt County; then Jinxed By Being, a collaboration with ambient dub master Shackleton, and on September 27th, Companion Rises (Twig Harper Remix), which finds Chasny's 2022 album Companion Rises completely reimagined and re-created by sound artist Twig Harper. The results are unlike anything you've ever heard in the Six Organs catalog—though it's all part of the design, Chasny says. For this return visit to Transmissions, Chasny joins host Jason P. Woodbury to discuss his trio of 2024 releases, his experiences playing with David Tibet's apocalyptic avant-garde collective Current 93, his vision for the DIY recording zine Head Voice, the sounds of spiritualism, and cultivating online community through the Six Organs Patreon. Plus: Animator Mark Neeley drops in for a quick chat about Pure Animation for Now People, his new minute-long, hand drawn collaboration with Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo. Alex is joined by Dr. Nicholas Perna to talk about nasality. They discuss and unravel the mysteries of the nose's role in vocal production, from debunking myths about nasal resonance to exploring the benefits of nasal airflow, Dr. Perna's insights will challenge your assumptions and expand your understanding of vocal technique. Whether you're a singing teacher or a curious vocalist, this episode offers a fresh perspective on an often misunderstood aspect of voice production. KEY TAKEAWAYS Nasality in singing is often misperceived; what we think sounds nasal is usually twang or high spectral energy, not actual nasal airflow. The soft palate's movement in singing is more of a backward motion rather than an upward lift, contrary to common teaching cues. A mild amount of velopharyngeal opening can positively impact resonance stability, especially in the passaggio range for tenors. The term "nasal resonance" may be misleading, as the nose neither amplifies nor enriches sound in singing. Contemporary singing styles often rely on audio processing and EQ adjustments, which significantly affect the final sound beyond the singer's raw vocal output. Good scientific research seeks to disprove itself, challenging researchers to remain curious and open to new findings. Singers and teachers should focus on the journey of learning rather than believing they've reached a definitive destination in understanding vocal technique. Exploring velopharyngeal opening in musical theatre singers, particularly in mix and belt techniques, is an area ripe for future research. BEST MOMENTS "What nasality is does not often coincide to its perceptual characteristics. And equally, studies have demonstrated that there isn't really this general consensus amongst singing teachers about perceived nasality." "Good science seeks to disprove itself. Staying curious means that you have an awareness that you are probably wrong." "The likelihood that that sound includes nasal airflow and that the soft palate is relaxed is very low because what the nasal passage does it has very thick mucous membranes. It's moist. There's other structures up there, typically hair, et cetera. And those things, dull sound, particularly high spectral energy." "I propose that we eliminate the term nasal resonance, nasal resonance altogether, because the nose neither, if we think of resonance as a definition of amplification and enrichment, it is neither amplifying sound, nor is it enriching sound." "The easiest observation you can obviously make, just to know whether there's anything happening or not, is to simply sustain a tone, pinch your nose shut, and see if any, you notice any difference.” EPISODE RESOURCES Voice Study Centre (Podcast) Singing Teachers Talk: Ep.151 How to Sing with Twang with Kerrie Obert (Podcast) Singing Teachers Talk: Ep. Alexa Terry interviews BAST founder Line Hilton about terminology - how language and word choice evolve over time, especially in relation to diversity, equity and inclusion. They discuss outdated or inappropriate terminology, the importance of updating language to reflect changing cultural norms, and being thoughtful about word choice to build a more inclusive society. KEY TAKEAWAYS Discussing anatomical terms like superior, inferior, lateral, medial, anterior, posterior is key for voice teachers. Line linked these to body parts, aiding medical report understanding. Muscle names, tied to origin and insertion, enhance comprehension. Alexa and Line explored varied names for vocal registers like chest, head, mix, belt. They noted diverse pedagogical and field terms, emphasising context-dependent meanings. Line stressed grasping intent behind terms over feeling overwhelmed. Line rarely uses "support" directly, viewing it as a result of vocal balance, not a specific technique. She favours strategies like transverse abdominis engagement for a supportive sensation, coupled with overall vocal coordination. Line challenges the "open throat" concept, noting pharynx narrowing as pitch ascends. She opts for tongue and larynx strategies, rejecting the focus on throat constrictors. Imagery like "open up the sound" proves useful based on student response. Line distinguishes a singing teacher's technique focus from a vocal coach's guiding role. She underlines SEO and student-friendly terms' importance. "Voice teacher" holds spoken connotations, advocating comfort in choosing terms. Line Hilton joins Alexa Terry once again to continue the Best Vocal Exercises series. Following previous episodes on chest voice and head voice, today the pair will be tackling the subject of the area between these two registers, the transition (aka passaggio, bridge, register break). Find out where the transition occurs in male and female voices, the problems singers face going through the transition, and some useful exercises you can use to help the singer navigate it. KEY TAKEAWAYS The transition in singing refers to the shift between different vocal registers, such as chest voice and head voice. It is a crucial aspect of vocal technique, allowing singers to smoothly navigate between registers and maintain a consistent tone. Vocal exercises and proper technique help singers develop a seamless transition, ensuring vocal control and flexibility. In contemporary singing, males typically experience a shift from chest voice to head voice around the E♭4, while females go through this transition around A♭4. This could be affected by the consonant, the vowel, whether you're ascending or descending, or even the age of the singer. The shift happens roughly every 4th to 5th interval. Transitioning between chest voice and head voice in singing can pose challenges for singers. Issues that may arise include vocal breaks, strain, inconsistent control, uneven tone quality, and pitch accuracy. Some useful vocal exercises to try when working on the transition are staccato arpeggios, glides or sirens, octave jumps, descending scales, humming exercises, lip trills, or even vocal fry to head voice. BEST MOMENTS‘Ideally, we need to have control over our larynx to go through the transition' ‘You wouldn't build a bridge if you didn't have something to go to on the other side' ‘Your goal is to shift without anyone noticing' ‘We sound unattractive for a while because we're undoing some muscle dysfunction' EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: www.basttraining.com Social Media: @basttraining Relevant Links & Mentions: Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 62 How to Choose the Best Vocal Exercises with Line Hilton Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 73 The Best Vocal Exercises for Laryngeal Stability with Line Hilton Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 83 The Best Vocal Exercises for Sick Voices with Line Hilton Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 113 The Best Vocal Exercises for Chest Voice with Line Hilton Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 114 The Best Vocal Exercises for Head Voice with Line Hilton The work of Ingo Titze Ian Davidson: https://ianjdavidson.com/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep 52 Getting to Grips with Vocal Acoustics with Chadley Ballantyne ABOUT THE PODCASTBAST Training is here to help singers gain the knowledge, skills and understanding required to be a great singing teacher. BAST founder Line Hilton returns to the show, this time to discuss 'head voice' and some of the exercises that singing teachers can use when working with a student on this particular vocal register. As well as that, you'll find out the vocal range covered by head voice, the importance of head voice and what actually goes on in your body when singing in head voice. KEY TAKEAWAYS Head voice refers to a lighter and higher vocal register where the sound resonates in the head. It's used for higher notes and requires vocal control and technique to achieve a seamless transition between registers. When singing in head voice, the vocal folds lengthen and thin out, vibrating faster to produce higher pitches. The movement involves increased tension and a stretched position, creating a lighter, focused sound. Head voice typically covers the higher end of a singer's vocal range in cisgender voices. It encompasses the upper notes, often starting from the middle or upper-middle range and extending towards the highest pitches a singer can reach. The specific range of head voice depends on the individual's vocal capabilities and training. The tongue plays a key role in shaping the sound and resonance of head voice. It rests slightly raised and forward, creating space in the throat for a lighter, more resonant sound. The tongue's flexibility and control aid in navigating pitch changes and achieving vocal agility. Proper tongue position and relaxation contribute to balanced and well-coordinated head voice technique. BEST MOMENTS‘It could be loud and piercing or lighter but is distinct from falsetto' ‘For balance and health it's important to be able to access all areas of your voice' ‘It's easier to explain our range from a more functional point of view' ‘I like to encourage a feeling of expansion in a singer if they describe it as being tight' EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: www.basttraining.com Social Media: @basttraining Relevant Links & Mentions: Artists/shows mentioned: Adele; Beyonce; Regina Spektor; Joni Mitchell; Anastasia (Broadway) Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 113 The Best Vocal Exercises for Chest Voice with Line Hilton Chris Johnson: https://www.chrisjohnsonvocalcoach.com/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 44 Exploring Vocal Registers with Chris Johnson Kerrie Obert: https://obertvoicestudios.com/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 59 Top Tongue Tips for Boosting High Frequency Energy with Kerrie Obert Singing Teachers Talk Podcast Voice Geeks Forum: https://www.facebook.com/groups/VoiceGeek/ Dane Chalfin: https://danechalfin.com/ (BAST Trainer)Kaya Herstad-Carney: https://kayamusic.com/ Lisa Popeil: popeil.com Warble App Amelia Carr: https://www.ameliacarrvoice.com/ Singing Teachers Talk - Ep. 50 Managing ‘Pushy Parents' and Teaching ‘Legit' with Amelia Carr ABOUT THE PODCASTBAST Training is here to help singers gain the knowledge, skills and understanding required to be a great singing teacher. Hey there, Singer! Today's episode is all on the lovely vocal register Head/Falsetto Voice! This can tend to be the vocal register that people "poo poo" on because it is "easy." I am a huge fan of head dominant singing. I find it very relaxing and reflective. What about you? We get into the anatomical/pedagogical stuff but also talk about how it can be used effectively! As a supplemental add on to this episode I have made playlists so that you can listen to successful artists sing in these registers! Please go to iTunes or Spotify and follow the playlists I made for Head Dominant Voices and Chest Dominant Voices! I'm having trouble adding the links here for some reason, but you can find them if you join our Facebook group: The Happy Singer Discussion Group! Hope you are feeling blessed and well. Remember, you are worthy and belong here on this earth. It is a miracle that you are here. I listened to a song recently by John Craigie (a FANTASTIC songwriter) and his lyrics say: "You're doing it wrong. Dissecting the bird. Trying to find the song... It's a miracle you're here at all." He goes on to say: "So when the candle flickers, when the days get dark They call them first world problems but they still break your heart The universe feels like it's against you Just take a minute to realize, all it Took to make you Your parents had to meet, as random as that was And hang out long enough at least, To make some love And make a baby And give it your name And ALL your ancestors had to do the same exponentially backwards To the start of life So much had to happen, just exactly right Sparks had to catch, oceans had to freeze, billions of cells had to survive, Endless disease, civilizations had to crumble, wars had to be fought, Bad presidents had to get elected, Good presidents had to get shot, People had to leave, hearts had to get broken, People had to die, Just so your eyes could open The Universe is not against you The Universe is not against you, it went through a lot Just to give you a chance, it must have wanted you, Pretty bad." There is a reason you are here. Hugs. -Kristy

We're doing biographies this month and decided to start with I Love You Phillip Morris, which is the story of con-artist Steven Russell and the relationship he forms with the titular Phillip Morris. This is a somewhat hard movie to watch because despite the fact it's well made, Steven Russell is just such a horrible person that it's cringe-worthy watching him screw over so many wonderful people, and most of all, Phillip, who is just such a sweet and charming guy, you can't help but love him (see what we did there). As always, please send feedback and suggestions to CinemaQueens@gmail.com and on social media @CinemaQueens!
Your voice sounds different as you go from low pitches to high pitches. Tara chats about the registers of your voice and how they all work together to form one voice. She delves into the sounds we hear as we go from low to high and back again and she also chats about the feeling or sensation of our voice changing. Tara offers exercises in this podcast to aid your singing so you can capture the range you were meant to sing with and have a smooth voice that can sound seamless and effortless. (1:30)— “A vocal register is a range of tones in the human voice produced by a particular pattern of the vocal folds.” (Wikipedia) (2:30)—Our voices have different colors and ranges. (5:10)—Exploring our voice by reading a children's book out loud. (6:35)—Three parts to our voice—Chest, Middle (Mixed) Head (7:40)—Chest voice—our lower register of pitches. (9:18—Middle voice—where our voice changes and shifts—middle pitches of our range. (Zona di passagi) (11:27)—Head voice—upper pitches of our voice and range. (13:52)—What happens in the vocal folds as we sing higher? The zipper analogy. (17:03)—Primo and secondo passaggi—the “breaks” that happen in our voice. Men vs women in their break areas: men have a shorter middle voice range. (20:10)—A way to make our throat open: fog up your hand. (21:07—Exercise: Slides/Sirens slowly. 1-3-1 (3rds) 1-5-1 (fifths) 1-8-1 (octaves) (22:55)—Exercise: Hummy sound to add to sirens or slides. (23:20)—Exercise: Ga, ga. 1-3-5-8-8-8-8-5-3-1 Do it with a whiney or cry sound. You can also experiment with a nasal sound. (24:25)—Exercise: Lip buzz/lip trill. This is easy on your voice. (25:35)—Exercise: Chicken sound “bwak”. You can use an arpeggio or a couple of notes 1-3-5-3-1 (26:15)—Exercise: Mum, mum. You can use a scale 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1

Kayla and Evan are members of the Boston-based group Birdland Avenue. Their group enjoys putting a jazzy spin on old and new classics. They are also hosts of the a cappella podcast Head/Voice. They both have lots of experience performing in larger college groups but the small group dynamic of Birdland Avenue is new to them. So, how do they approach recording a small group and creating “their” sound on their first EP/album? That’s what we’re discussing on today’s LIVE COACHING call. I’m able to help Kayla and Evan get clarity around two key concepts that will increase their awesomeness in the studio and we then get to work brainstorming on ways to accentuate and GROW each of those! In this episode, we rattle through a ton of great ways to create different sounds and bring out the gems in their arrangements. We cover time-tested methods for getting the sounds they want during tracking instead of having to wait for the mixing engineer to create the sounds for them. We also discuss why and when it’s good and bad to invest in more gear and how to do it on a budget! We even go into strategies for writing original songs, how to get a more “live” sound from their recordings and deal with the weirdness of trying to perform in the studio! Kayla and Evan are awesome and I know you’re going to LOVE this episode, so enjoy! Find out more about Birdland Avenue here → https://www.facebook.com/birdlandavenue Find out more about Head/Voice here → https://soundcloud.com/headvoicepodcast These LIVE COACHING SESSIONS are here so you can get deep insight into a cappella recording issues, ideas and challenges that we all face as we create strategies, solutions and action plans that you can benefit from! It's also a great way to see just how transformative it can be to allow another qualified person into your “group” or “studio” so you can save time, money and energy that you would normally take figuring it out on your own! We're in this together! If you are interested a strategy session for YOU and/or YOUR group, check out the different options you have (http://recordingacappella.com/coaching) or simply email me at danny@emeraldcitypro.com to let me know how I can best serve you!

I don't think I've had a lot of students who did not have some issues with head voice. Either it's hard to get into head voice, or it's hard to get out of head voice. Then there are the transitions between head voice and chest voice, the different spaces when singing more classical or popular music, and expanding the range to the top. Whatever the case may be, head voice is an important part of your voice and should not be neglected. Just like strength training for a muscle should not happen without also stretching, it's important that you train your voice on both ends of the spectrum on a regular basis, both high and low. Only then will you achieve maximum flexibility, strength and accuracy - and that's what every singer needs to be working on throughout their singing career. There are some facts I want you to be aware of so you can be the master of your head voice, and not let it dictate what you can and cannot sing! Today we discuss techniques for building strength into head voice and the upper range to help you try and develop that intense sound needed for many contemporary genres. Also, a singer had found that they overdone it over the past month and was suffering from a strained voice. Resting the voice was one part of the discussion, but changing ongoing vocal behaviours became the more pertinent point.
