In the final installment of Mad Love Month, Hollywood gives Steven J. Russell, the man they call King Con, the big screen treatment and the results are...mixed. In the second half of this true crime pairing, Christopher and Eric compare reported facts with cinematic depictions to find out how much of this Jim Carrey vehicle I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS is fiction. And would this exploration of a devoted gay romance defined by rampant criminal activity be told in quite the same way if Hollywood were to make it today? Christopher and Eric weigh in on these and other important questions — like whether or not Ewan McGregor is really cute. (Spoiler Alert: he is.)
For this March Madness episode we have an exciting true crime rom-com with a surprise jailbreak ending. We are doing I Love You Phillip Morris, which stars Jim Carrey as Steven, a con-man who realizes, late in life, that he's gay and falls in love with Phillip Morris, played by Ewan McGregor. But it's a prison romance and once they're in separate penitentiaries can their love last? In this episode we discuss: how Tam will only sleep on beds that are out and proud (no hide-a-beds for her), how Corinne can overcome many obstacles while podcasting (except forgetting to watch the movie), and how much enthusiastic prayer it would take before Jesus says 'We're good!' The twists and turns in this movie have blown our minds, and we hope you join us for this 'master level blow job' movie that is I Love You Phillip Morris.
As the week of love continues, we've got a mad-cap romance to wrap up the week. 2009's I Love You Phillip Morris is a fascinating effort with Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. How has this movie held up? We discuss that, a continued discussion of representation, Jim Carrey, who the real criminals are, and much, much more. In this week's episode, Aaron and T.J. discuss I Love You Phillip Morris, covering such issues as Jim Carrey's performance, Ewan McGregor as a cute Southern twink, and the film's critique of the carceral state. Our two movies this week are based on real-life criminals who went to great lengths for love and lived the catch-phrase "Be gay Do Crime." Dog Day Afternoon is frequently listed as one of the finest films of the 1970's, but ignores the fact it features Oscar nominees Al Pacino and Chris Sarandon playing a queer couple. In 2009, Jim Carrey played a leading man to love interest Ewan McGregor the subversive crime caper I Love You Phillip Morris. Brian and Chris are once again debating straight people playing queer, but Brian is far more forgiving when it's pitched just right.
This week we share a story that will have you scratching your head. You think you love someone; but do you love someone like Steven Jay Russell loved Phillip Morris? This con-man had a love so strong that prison bars couldn't contain it. On the menu… prison food. Cindy researched inmate favorites and came up with a menu of ziti with beef meatballs, a house salad, Italian dressing, and a slice of white bread. For dessert, blueberry pound cake, and what else would we drink if not toilet wine? Kidding, of course, we had the next best thing: homemade Grenach wine. Jim Carrey , in full James Eugene Carrey, (born January 17, 1962, New Market, Ontario, Canada), Canadian American comedian who established himself as a leading comedic actor with a series of over-the-top performances and who won plaudits for his more-serious portrayals as his career progressed. While living in America, he struggled to make money during the first few years and almost gave up. In an interview, Carrey states that he would drive to the top of Mulholland Drive in LA every night, and visualize what he wanted for himself as an actor. In 1992, Carrey wrote a check to himself for 10 million dollars._______________James Eugene "Jim" Carrey is a Canadian-American actor, comedian, singer and writer. He has received two Golden Globe Awards and has also been nominated on four occasions.Carrey began stand-up comedy in 1979, performing at Yuk Yuk's in Toronto, Ontario. After gaining prominence in 1981, he began working at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles where he was soon noticed by comedian Rodney Dangerfield, who immediately signed him to open his tour performances.Carrey, long interested in film and television, developed a close friendship with comedian Damon Wayans, which landed him a role in the sketch comedy hit In Living Color, in which he portrayed various characters during the show's 1990 season. Having had little success in television movies and several low-budget films, Carrey was cast as the title character in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective which premiered in February, 1994, making more than $72 million domestically. The film spawned a sequel, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995), in which he reprised the role of Ventura.High profile roles followed when he was cast as Stanley Ipkiss in The Mask (1994) for which he gained a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, and as Lloyd Christmas in the comedy film Dumb and Dumber (1994). Between 1996 and 1999, Carrey continued his success after earning lead roles in several highly popular films including The Cable Guy (1996), Liar Liar (1997), in which he was nominated for another Golden Globe Award and in the critically acclaimed films The Truman Show and Man on the Moon, in 1998 and 1999, respectively. Both films earned Carrey Golden Globe awards. Since earning both awards — the only two in his three-decade career— Carrey continued to star in comedy films, including How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) where he played the title character, Bruce Almighty (2003) where he portrayed the role of unlucky TV reporter Bruce Nolan, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004), Fun with Dick and Jane (2005), Yes Man (2008), and A Christmas Carol (2009).Carrey has also taken on more serious roles including Joel Barish in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) alongside Kate Winslet and Kirsten Dunst, which earned him another Golden Globe nomination, and Steven Jay Russell in I Love You Phillip Morris (2009) alongside Ewan McGregor. Annie Golden got her start in the 1970s as the lead singer of the CBGB headlining band, The Shirts. In the 1970s director Milos Forman “discovered” Annie Golden singing at CBGBs with her band The Shirts. He cast her in his 1979 film adaptation of Hair. She has been working and thriving ever since. Click here to see Annie Golden shared her "work station" which contains her "fancy schmancy" microphone to record the new Bleeding Love podcast. You may know Golden from playing Norma Romano in Orange Is the New Black. You may know her from countless roles on and off Broadway. Her vast credits include Hair, Leader of the Pack, Ah, Wilderness!, On the Town, The Full Monty, Xanadu, Violet, Assassins and Broadway Bounty Hunter. You may know her playing Jeannie Ryan from Milos Forman’s film adaptation of Hair. You may know her from Desperately Seeking Susan, Baby Boom, Longtime Companion, Strictly Business, Prelude to a Kiss, 12 Monkeys or I Love You Phillip Morris. Golden currently co-stars in the new Broadway Podcast Network series, Bleeding Love. The Post-Apocalyptic musical takes place in a world where it’s too dangerous to go outside. Golden stars with Rebecca Naomi Jones, Marc Kudisch, Sarah Stiles, Taylor Trensch and Tony Vincent Be More Chill composer Joe Iconis even wrote the musical Broadway Bounty Hunter as a love letter to Golden. (The original cast recording was just released last month, https://ghostlightrecords.lnk.to/broadwaybountyhunter). “She has been my muse,” says Iconis. “The thing that has always comes through is her authenticity. She is such a real New Yorker and so authentically herself. And I love that she has had such a wild life.” Produced in part by the Broadway Podcast Network. Learn more about your ad choices. We're doing biographies this month and decided to start with I Love You Phillip Morris, which is the story of con-artist Steven Russell and the relationship he forms with the titular Phillip Morris. This is a somewhat hard movie to watch because despite the fact it's well made, Steven Russell is just such a horrible person that it's cringe-worthy watching him screw over so many wonderful people, and most of all, Phillip, who is just such a sweet and charming guy, you can't help but love him (see what we did there). As always, please send feedback and suggestions to CinemaQueens@gmail.com and on social media @CinemaQueens!

Someone better call the fire department because "This Is Rad!" is smoooookin'! This week Kyle, Matthew and Natalie welcome back comedian Brandie Posey (151 episodes later) to talk about her love of Canadian comedian Jim Carrey... and how he inspired her to be a big weirdo! She appreciates his physicality and commitment as a performer and the place of anger it comes from. She's seen basically every Jim Carrey movie and has been to every Jim Carrey movie on opening day since Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. Together they talk about his early and underrated stuff, the importance of bringing your own popcorn to the movies, and why taking your kid to see Scary Movie might be irresponsible parenting. There are no two con artists films less alike than I Love You Phillip Morris and FOCUS. One is a true story, the other fiction. One is slick and cool, the other bright and slapstick filled. One features two men falling in love in prison while the other features a run of the mill Hollywood romance. On this week’s episode, Nicholas talks to Martin Dunlop about the differences between the two films while exposing their complete lack of understanding of the politics of sexuality.

Ian Wilson unites with his brother Andy Wilson to bring you the first episode in a podcast series looking at three films of any given actor. The first actor in the glare of Hey, an Actor! is rubber-faced comedian and part-time acting heavyweight Jim Carrey. From the dramatic oeuvre shown in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, to the hybrid comedy / drama of I Love You Phillip Morris, and the all-out exaggerated comedy of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, the Brothers Wilson deal with a man who embodies the notion of swinging between the sublime and the ridiculous. Pandy also declares the greatest depiction of love in all of cinema, and forces Ian to break out the editing bleeps already. Not even Adham Fisher managed that.

Trevan talks about the new Jason Statham vehicle "The Mechanic" and Eric praises "I Love You Phillip Morris."
The holidays are coming and so are some movies totally worthy seeing. Eric D. Snider says “TRON: Legacy” is pretty to look at but not much else. Jeff Bayer disagrees and says it’s pretty to look at and more. “The Fighter” is a boxing movie worth your time with Christian Bale stealing many scenes away from Mark Wahlberg (not in a bad way). Eric didn’t see “I Love You Phillip Morris” but Jeff did and describes it as a gay “The Informant!” Thanks to knee surgery, Jeff didn’t sit through “How Do You Know” or “Yogi Bear” and that’s where Eric comes in to give you his take. They answer plenty of QOTWs and the next Question of the Week is “What is your favorite overlooked movie of 2010?”
