Patrick K. O'Donnell reflects on Robert E. Lee's monumental decision at Appomattox to reject guerrilla warfare and surrender, putting country before Confederacy. Grant offered honorable terms, leading to a respectful surrender overseen by Joshua Chamberlain. After the war, John Singleton Mosby forged an unlikely friendship with Grant, becoming a Republican campaign manager in Virginia. Despite being ostracized by former Confederates, Mosbyserved as a consul in Hong Kong and mentored a young George S. Patton. His legacy in irregular warfare and maneuver tactics continues to influence modern American special operations to this day. (8)1865

After the execution of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the Maratha Empire stood on the brink of collapse. Leadership was uncertain. The Mughals were advancing. And the idea of Swaraj seemed close to fading. But history didn't unfold the way it was expected to. In this conversation, Medha Bhaskaran — author of Queen Tara: Kali of the Deccan — joins Bharatvaarta to trace the rise of Maharani Tarabai, a leader who emerged from the margins of power to take charge in one of the most critical moments in Indian history. We explore how Tarabai, initially far removed from succession, became a “destiny queen” — shaped not by circumstance alone, but by training, political exposure, and conviction. From her unconventional upbringing to her early understanding of power, the episode examines how her leadership was forged long before she formally took control. The conversation moves through the chaos following Sambhaji Maharaj's death — the fragmentation of authority, the pressure of Mughal expansion, and the difficult decisions that defined this phase. It highlights how survival itself became strategy, and how resistance was sustained not through brute force alone, but through adaptability and intelligence. We also unpack the nature of warfare in this period — from guerrilla tactics and disruption of supply lines to psychological warfare and misinformation — and how these methods allowed a smaller force to withstand a far larger empire. At its core, this episode is not just about a historical figure. It's about leadership under uncertainty, the role of women in moments of crisis, and how power can emerge from the most unexpected places. And above all, it is the story of a ruler who refused to let a collapsing moment define the future of a civilisation. ⸻ ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 – 01:10 • Opening Hook: Collapse of the Maratha Empire 01:10 – 04:30 • Sambhaji Maharaj's Execution & Aftermath 04:30 – 08:30 • Aurangzeb's Expansion & The Deccan Crisis 08:30 – 12:30 • The Idea of Swaraj Under Threat 12:30 – 16:30 • Who Was Tarabai? On Christmas night in 1776, the American Revolution stood on the brink of collapse. With the Continental Army demoralized, enlistments expiring, and defeat seeming inevitable, George Washington made a desperate, audacious decision that would change the course of history. In this special Christmas Eve episode of America's Founding Series, Professor Nick Giordano tells the gripping, true story of Washington's crossing of the Delaware River, the password "Victory or Death," and the impossible gamble that saved the Revolution. This is not a textbook lesson, but a powerful reminder of courage, fortitude, and will, and why even in our darkest moments, history, nations, and lives can still be turned around. Episode Highlights: • The story behind Washington's crossing of the Delaware on Christmas night, including the freezing conditions, collapsing army, and the gamble that kept independence alive • How the Battle of Trenton restored morale, held the Continental Army together, and prevented the American Revolution from ending before the new year • Why the lesson of 1776 matters today for Americans who feel abandoned, discouraged, or believe the country, or their own future, is beyond saving

It's Oxi Day, and Ouzo Talk again journey's into Greece's history with this spotlight on one of the most remarkable and complex chapters of World War II – the Greek Resistance with the help of renowned historian Spyridon Tsoutsoumpis. Although Greece fell to Axis forces in April 1941, its people refused to surrender. From remote mountain villages to occupied islands, ordinary Greeks including farmers, students, priests, women, and soldiers rose up against German, Italian, and Bulgarian occupiers. Yet behind the heroic acts lay a fractured resistance, with rival groups like ELAS and EDES, whose uneasy wartime alliance would later unravel into brutal civil conflict. Helping us unpack this story of courage, defiance, and division is leading historian Spyridon Tsoutsoumpis, whose groundbreaking work on political violence and the people's armies of the Greek Resistance brings new light to this pivotal era in modern Greek and European history. This episode is proudly brought to you by:Meet The Greek: https://www.meetthegreek.com.au/The Greek Providore: https://thegreekprovidore.com.au/Send us a text Support the showEmail us at ouzotalk@outlook.comSubscribe to our Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@OuzoTalkFollow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/OuzoTalkFollow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ouzo_talk/

Earlier this year, Chinese publisher Tencent revealed a new project so shameless that it belies belief. It's called Light of Motiram, and it's no exaggeration to say that it's a pound-for-pound carbon copy of PlayStation's vaunted Horizon franchise. It crossed the line to such an extent that Sony is suing Tencent over it, packing fascinating evidence that this title was likely intended to be Horizon all along. Is Tencent dead-to-rights? Other news this week includes likely massive overreaction to PlayStation's hiring of a cross-platform manager, updates on Amazon's God of War TV project, Xbox's dominance of PS5 sales chart with rumors of more to come, Warner Bros. dipping its toes back in the games-as-a-service space, fresh PS+ offerings, and more. These back-to-back monologues expose a worldview in which China has launched a multifront hidden war against the United States and its allies. The speaker argues that Beijing is circumventing tariffs by routing goods through dozens of countries and working through Iran and the Houthis to attack Western shipping, target U.S. naval forces, and undermine populist movements in Europe. At home, the narrative portrays an escalating “guerrilla civil war,” as left-wing activists allegedly intimidate ICE agents, exploit mass immigration as a political weapon, and attempt to terrorize law enforcement into submission. Blending geopolitical alarm with domestic outrage, the commentary paints a picture of coordinated threats abroad and within—driven by a Chinese quest for global dominance and enabled by U.S. political elites.

General Nasution's journey from insurgent to Army commander and strategist fighting against communist insurgents in Indonesia is described by Colonel Dr Almuchalif Suryo. Trained by the Dutch as part of the Netherlands East Indies Army, General Abdel Haris Nasution (1918-2000) fought with them against the Japanese during the Second World War and then against them for Indonesian independence. Having become an expert guerilla commander, he was then charged with creating Indonesia's state army, a force that had to unite elements trained by the Dutch and the Japanese, as well as citizen soldiers. One of the first tasks of this new army was to counter a communist insurgency in which Nasution himself was a target. Narrowly surviving an assassination attempt that killed his 8-year old daughter, he fell afoul of Indonesia's politics and was removed from post by President Sukarno. Nasution was rehabilitated under President Suharto before the two fell out. Towards the end of Nasution's life, they reconciled, and Nasution became one of only three five-star generals in Indonesia's history. Colonel Dr Almuchalif Suryo was an infantry officer in the Indonesian Army, where he was the school commander of the Combatant Training Centre and Head of Total War Study at the Republic of Indonesia Defence University. Now retired, he still lectures there. He speaks to us in a personal capacity. FURTHER READING Abdul Haris Nasution, Fundamentals of Guerrilla Warfare, Frederick A. Praeger, 1965. [originally published on Patreon February 9, 2024] As if I didn't discuss the Tupamaros enough, I revisit the story in light of even more information I found. In particular, I look at a RAND report on the MLN-T and cross-reference it with several more books on the group. This leads us to the interestingly-named Plan Satán, as well as much more context for the Mitrione kidnapping. I also found more information on the Nixon administration's decisions at the time. Then, CJ and I act out a dramatic reading of Dialogue Before Death (1971), a portion of Mitrione's interrogation tapes by Tupamaros. We also discuss the curious publisher of this book, as well as more on the calculations that went into the decision to execute him. Then, I look at an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the MLN-T through the eyes of one of their inspirations - Abraham Guillén, author of Estrategia de la guerrilla urbana (1969), as well as similar assessments made in the International Journal of Intelligence and Counterintelligence. I make a major tangent looking at the "Abraham Guillen Press/Arm the Spirit" publisher.  I make a few final notes about the Tupamaros including that they confirmed Hevia was in contact with them before he defected back to Cuba. Additionally, I tell the story of Henry Engler, the Swedish Tupamaro, as well as what Wikileaks disclosures showed us of diplomatic handwringing about Uruguayan cancer center negotiations in 2007. Diplomats be lying. To close out, I mention some of the wavy stuff relating to the Tupamaros' imprisonment, and discuss the Tupamaros leadership entering Uruguayan politics, culminating with Jose 'Pepe' Mujica becoming the President of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015. [note: at some point, probably talking about Guillén, I accidentally said FIA instead of FAI. FAI meaning the Federación Anarquista Ibérica, of which he was a member] Songs: Adios by Los Tupamaros Anna was a Stool Pigeon by Laura Jane Grace En Esta Tarde Gris by Julio Sosa

And make your voices heard for which faction you would like to see next! -Isyander Everything below is for the omnissiah. But like, you can read it if you want. Just a synopsis of the video you're watching. The Raven Guard, known as the XIX Legion during the Great Crusade, epitomizes guerilla warfare and covert operations under the leadership of their enigmatic Primarch, Corvus Corax. Originating from the moon Deliverance (originally Lycaeus), they have been stalwart defenders of the Imperium of Man. The Legion's size was relatively small, with a force of 80,000 Astartes. Despite their numbers, they were formidable, employing tactics of mass sabotage, rapid strikes, and expert covert operations, honed to perfection during Corax's revolution against the Tech Guilds of Kiavahr.Corax's upbringing on Deliverance shaped the Raven Guard's future. His revolutionary actions against the oppressive Tech Guilds of Kiavahr were marked by no mercy for the captors and a brutal, short war. His cunning in battle led to the renaming of Lycaeus to Deliverance, symbolizing the liberation from slavery. The dark tower that once held the oppressors became the Raven Guard's fortress, named the Ravenspire, and the source of their future strength during the Great Crusade. The Horus Heresy brought devastation to the Raven Guard. During the infamous Drop Site Massacre on Isstvan V, the Legion's numbers were decimated from 80,000 to a mere 3,000 battle-hardened veterans, a testament to the treachery and brutality of the war. The betrayal by fellow legions marked a dark chapter in the Raven Guard's history, forcing Corax and his warriors to fight in conditions starkly contrary to their preferred tactics of stealth and surprise.Amidst the chaos, the Raptors, an elite group within the Legion, emerged as a meld of regular Astartes and Primarch DNA discovered by Corax on Terra. These warriors were stronger, faster, and tougher than their counterparts, playing a pivotal role in the battles that followed. Despite the mutations and the subsequent internal conflict that nearly tore them apart, the Raptors were given full honors and continued to fight valiantly for the Legion. In the aftermath of the Heresy, the Raven Guard continued to uphold their legacy, participating in key battles across the galaxy. Their engagements, such as the Siege of Baal, the Battle of Arissak, and confrontations against formidable foes like the Death Guard and Emperor's Children, underscore their unwavering dedication to the Imperium.Throughout their history, the Raven Guard has remained a symbol of resilience and adaptability, their very essence shaped by the trials of their Primarch and the relentless battles they have endured. Their story is not just one of warfare but also of survival and undying loyalty to their ideals and the Imperium of Man.TIMESTAMPS —— 0:00:00 Intro0:00:11 Poll Announcement0:01:26 A note on their Stealth0:02:51 The Return of the G.O.A.T.0:10:21 Corax's Upbringing0:18:57 The Raven Guard Before Corax0:28:20 The Raven Guard's Tactics0:40:52 The biggest problem constantly plagueing the Raven Guard0:47:54 Closing Thoughts——————————  TAGSRaven Guard, Corvus Corax, Warhammer 40K, Deliverance, Kiavahr, Great Crusade, Horus Heresy, Istvaan V, Drop Site Massacre, Raptors, Primarch DNA, Guerrilla Warfare, Covert Operations, Imperium of Man, Battles of the Raven Guard.————————————Opinions expressed in this video are solely those of Isyander & Koda and in no way reflect the views or opinions of Games Workshop Ltd.Artwork throughout thSupport the show

It's early 1835 and globally, quite a few fascinating things are going on. For one, America's National Debt was Zero dollars - for the first and last time in it's history. It's president Andrew Jackson survived an assassination attempt in January of that year, also the first but not the last. Mauritius had banned slavery on the 1st February 1835 as South Africa had done in December 1834. The British began their counter attacks on the Xhosa chiefs who'd invaded across the ceded territories, into the Cape, and wreaked so much havoc - the Sixth Frontier War was rumbling on. Another major event had been brewing for some time. The trekboers had been chafing under the rule of the English and each new law that was supposed to protect the Khoekhoe from abuse, then the ban on slavery, led to the Dutch decedents recoiling seeing these as actions designed to destroy their way of life. It was a litany of abuse as far as the Boers were concerned, including the horror of the Slagter's Nek rebellion, the bungled hanging of the rebels, the use of English as the official language, they were under siege, it was all too much and these were the push factors. But there was the pull factor - those distant landscapes, those far-off mountains that seemed to beckon to the youngsters and those with adventure in mind - this beckoned towards adventurers like an African Medusa. The fact that the land was occupied was of secondary importance, and like Medusa, was imbued with malice and risk. By 1830 the echo of the hills yonder became an obsession for some of the trekboers. 1930 was also the year that the 19 year-old Karel Trichardt met with Hintsa between the Kei and Bashee rivers and asked him for land - and was awarded a 90 year lease on 101 square kilometers near the Kei River. This was not what the British had intended with their segregation of the Colony and the Xhosa areas across the Kei. Trichardt in particular was going to be a thorn in the English side. There were two of the three missionaries still operating amongst the Xhosa, but even these eventually fled. John Brownlee who was safe at his mission station on the Buffalo river, alongside Dyani Tshatshu's Tinde people, found that they turned against him. Tshatshu himself came to Brownlee one night and said the Tinde were going to war against the British, calling on the missionary to join him. Brownlee said he could not, other missionaries heard about this in Grahamstown and sent wagons to get him out - he refused. He and his family were going to pay for his stubbornness.

He joined Carl Miller, Research Director at the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media at the think tank Demos, to discuss his book: The Dragons and the Snakes: How the Rest Learned to Fight the West.  Learn more about your ad choices.
