Craig E. Jones with the Housing Research Collaborative doesn't agree with a new report showing that B.C.'s legislation on short-term rentals has led to supply increases and rent decreases. We ask our audience what they're experiencing in their rental market since short-terms rentals in B.C. were banned in May.Then, Clean Energy Research Group director Andy Hira says the massive Site C dam is not the answer to the province's growing need for more electricity. We hear from our audience callers on where they think the Province needs to turn for sustainable energy.
This week, our guest is the Honourable Christy Clark, the 35th Premier of British Columbia and Canada's longest-serving female Premier. Christy Clark is currently a Senior Advisor for Bennett Jones LLP.Politics is top of mind for energy decision-makers with the upcoming US election, Canadian federal by-elections, the possibility of an early federal election in Canada, and a provincial election next month in Christy Clark's home province of British Columbia. Here are some of the questions Jackie and Peter asked Christy Clark:Are you surprised that the NDP has been slipping in the polls in BC? Explain the BC United Party (former BC Liberal Party) recently folding into the Conservative Party of BC. Is there potential for the provincial Conservative Party to win in BC next month? Is climate change still an important issue for BC voters? You worked to get BC's LNG industry started, with over 15 potential projects expected at one point; what is your view on the industry now? Is more electrical generation capacity needed to meet future demand, besides the Site C hydro dam? Now that it has started, how do people feel about the Trans Mountain expansion oil pipeline? With the federal NDP ripping up their agreement to cooperate with the Liberals, do you expect the federal election will occur sooner than October 2025? What are the chances that Justin Trudeau will withdraw from the federal Liberal leadership before the election? Do you have any federal political aspirations?Content referenced in this podcast:Current polling of BC provincial election at 388canada.com Please review our disclaimer at: https://www.arcenergyinstitute.com/disclaimer/ Check us out on social media: X (Twitter): @arcenergyinstLinkedIn: @ARC Energy Research Institute Subscribe to ARC Energy Ideas PodcastApple PodcastsAmazon MusicSpotify

This week, our guest is Roger Dall'Antonia, President and CEO of FortisBC. FortisBC is a leading energy provider in British Columbia (BC), Canada. The utility serves about 1.1 million natural gas customers and 185,000 electricity customers. Roger explains the benefits of using natural gas to meet the peak winter heating demand and the challenges of using electricity to do the same. Because of the unique ability of gaseous fuels to flex up and meet demand, even on the coldest days, Roger sees a long-term future for gas. He explains how natural gas can become cleaner over time through a broad set of measures, such as increasing the amount of renewable natural gas (RNG) and clean hydrogen and efficiency measures that use less natural gas. Here are some of the questions that Peter and Jackie asked Roger: What is the outlook for the supply and demand of electricity in BC? How will Site C hydroelectric demand change the market? Is BC too reliant on hydro, considering concerns around drought? Why has BC recently decided to launch a call for renewable power from large-scale wind and solar farms? What is RNG and how much potential supply is there? How are you involving Indigenous partners in your projects? What are your thoughts on the Clean Electricity Regulations targeting net zero electricity by 2035? Considering Atlantic Canada's exception from the retail carbon tax for heating oil, could this be the beginning of the end for the retail carbon tax in Canada? On this episode of The Construction Record Podcast, digital media editor Warren Frey discusses Renew Canada's 2024 list of Canada's top infrastructure projects with Renew editor John Tenpenny. As with previous years, health infrastructure projects made a strong showing due to pandemic-era spending increases to deal with the current health crisis and any future ones. Transit also continued to dominate the list across Canada, Tenpenny said, with over a quarter of the list's projects. He also noted most energy projects are focused on hydroelectric transmission and nuclear power rather than fossil fuels, and pointed to most highway projects as focused on maintenance and upgrades. Tenpenny added megaprojects such as Site C in British Columbia are so large that even as they near completion the “wind down” process still takes some time and other large projects are coming through the infrastructure pipeline in the next two to five years. You can listen to The Construction Record on the Daily Commercial News and Journal of Commerce websites as well as on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon Music's podcast section. On this episode of the Five Pods of Xmas, news editor Lindsey Cole looks at some of the most important stories of 2023 and predicts what lies ahead for the industry in the coming year. Lindsey pointed to the housing crisis in Ontario as a major story, as well as the Greenbelt scandal as Doug Ford's government backpedaled on development of a large amount of publicly-owned land. She also pointed to a cumbersome approvals process in many municipalities paired with an ongoing labour crisis as an ongoing story throughout 2024. She also said she'll be watching large Toronto transit projects as well as the controversy surrounding the revamp of Ontario Place, and said in the west Site C is almost finished and Coastal Link is wrapping up. What happens when the labour on those projects is free to work elsewhere? In this episode we discuss the Site C project, LNG exports, renewable energy, salmon and steelhead and more. Mrs. Furstenau strongly believes that a wholesale change must be made in provincial politics immediately to promote the well being of our environment and all its inhabitants. It is imperative to move from election time scale politics to long term planning and thinking. British Columbia possesses all the resources and talent required to become a world leader in renewable energy given the opportunity. We must stop the corporate handouts and subsidies and invest into our citizens and their ability to thrive. In fact our decisions should be strongly based on what we are creating and leaving for future generations. Bring on Pachamama! View From Victoria: A local look at politics from the Provincial capital. The Vancouver Sun's Vaughn Palmer, and Global News reporter Richard Zussman join the show with their take on the day's headlines.
Today's (May 14, 2018) ongoing citizen protest against the Site C dam project coincides with the announcement from the West Moberly First Nations of a decision rendered by the federal government regarding the injunction filed by the West Moberly and others to stop work on the contentious project. They argue Site C contravenes treaties they've signed with the government, and contend they were not properly consulted, and their objections and concerns not heeded properly. There is some confusion on the tape during Barbara's segment due to my misinterpretation of the government announcement. In short, the feds retreat is good news for those wishing to see the project stopped. Here's a link to the release.
