On this week's episode of Valley of Depth, our first recorded in person, we sit down with Jason Kim, CEO of Firefly Aerospace, in the company's historic Blue Ghost mission control room in Cedar Park, Texas — the same room where 60 engineers watched their lander touch down at one meter per second last year.    From there, the conversation opens into how Jason actually thinks: about the Moon, about scale, and about being a "mission CEO" rather than a hardware or software one. Firefly went public in 2025, acquired defense software company SciTec within months, and now sits inside Golden Dome. Jason argues the market still prices the company as a pure launch player while he's building an end-to-end stack he puts in the same conversation as Anduril and Palantir. We cover: The last 30 seconds of the Blue Ghost Mission 1 landing, from inside the room where it happened Why Blue Ghost Mission 2 is harder: a three-spacecraft stack and the first US far-side landing Whether small launch makes money, and why Alpha is both a profit center and a strategic asset The Eclipse medium-lift bet, the Northrop partnership, and why Starship doesn't make everyone else obsolete Why the Moon matters, and how big the commercial lunar economy actually gets Why a hardware CEO bought a software company The valuation gap with Rocket Lab and what he believes the market hasn't priced in His honest read on SpaceX, China, the new-launch shakeout, and the path to a $100 billion company   • Chapters • 00:00 - Trailer 00:53 – Blue Ghost Mission 1 04:41 – The bar for success for Blue Ghost Mission 1 07:16 – What is the new objective in Blue Ghost Mission 2? 11:49 – Jason coming into Firefly leadership 16:35 – Day 1 as Firefly CEO 18:53 – AE Industrial and how private equity informs Jason's mindset 21:02 – Product stack 22:34 – Demand signal from responsive launch 24:21 – Alpha and small launch economics 26:20 – Firefly's Eclipse 28:09 – How Starship will impact the launch market 29:41 – Viability of commercial launches 32:15 – Blue Ghost x Eclipse? 33:51 – Why does the Moon matter? 36:02 – Jason's commercial lunar economy predictions 38:02 – The future of Blue Ghost's missions 39:52 – Why Jason acquired Sitec 44:30 – Sitec in the Space Force's Golden Dome contracts 47:16 – Why shift Firefly to being a public company? 49:04 – How does Jason address stock price fluctuation internally? 50:49 – Do the public markets understand the space economy? 52:57 – Is Firefly just a launch company? 55:25 – What part of Firefly has the market not priced in yet? 56:50 – Firefly's strategy in a world where lift becomes effectively free 58:49 – Which launch companies will survive? 59:56 – The China question 1:00:33 – Is there a company out there that doesn't get enough attention? 1:01:53 – How Firefly is thinking about M&As 1:04:25 – The path to Firefly hitting a $100B valuation 1:05:25 – Jason Kim, the person 1:07:07 – Who does Jason call for advice? 1:07:57 – What Jason would tell 25-year-old Jason 1:11:58 – What Jason does for fun when not working on space   • Show notes • Firefly's' website — https://fireflyspace.com/ Jason's' socials — https://x.com/Jason_Lil_Kim/ Mo's socials — https://x.com/itsmoislam Payload's socials — https://x.com/payloadspace / https://www.linkedin.com/company/payloadspace Ignition's socials — https://x.com/ignitionnuclear / https://www.linkedin.com/company/ignition-nuclear/ Tectonic's socials — https://x.com/tectonicdefense / https://www.linkedin.com/company/tectonicdefense/ Valley of Depth archive — Listen: https://pod.payloadspace.com/   • About us • Valley of Depth is a podcast about the technologies that matter — and the people building them. Repurposing the Site C Work Camp Guest: Mukhtar Latif, CEO of Pomegranate Housing Consultancy By Stuart McNish   “We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create Canada's premier centre for excellence in mental health and addictions in [British Columbia]'s northeast,” says Mukhtar Latif of Pomegranate Housing Consultancy. The North Wind Wellness Centre Society and Treaty 8 First Nations have put forward a plan to repurpose the Site C workers' camp into a permanent asset that will deliver transformational healthcare services.   The worker accommodation facility was built to house 1,600 workers and it came with a wide range of services and utilities.  Now that the work of building the dam is complete, the site is about to be decommissioned. “This facility will address a more than 6 month waitlist for people needing treatment in Northern BC,” says Latif.   If successful in their bid to have BC Hydro endorse the plan to repurpose the site, the benefits are multidimensional. “The centre will generate new treatments and best practices, train more than 200 people in critical healthcare roles, [and] save the healthcare system more than $30 million,” says Latif.   We invited Mukhtar Latif to join us for a Conversation That Matters about the innovative plan to reuse the Site C workcamp as a place of healing.   You can see the interview here https://www.conversationsthatmatter.ca/ Learn More about our guests career at careersthatmatter.ca

This week, our guest is the Honourable Christy Clark, the 35th Premier of British Columbia and Canada's longest-serving female Premier. Christy Clark is currently a Senior Advisor for Bennett Jones LLP.Politics is top of mind for energy decision-makers with the upcoming US election, Canadian federal by-elections, the possibility of an early federal election in Canada, and a provincial election next month in Christy Clark's home province of British Columbia. Here are some of the questions Jackie and Peter asked Christy Clark:Are you surprised that the NDP has been slipping in the polls in BC? Explain the BC United Party (former BC Liberal Party) recently folding into the Conservative Party of BC. Is there potential for the provincial Conservative Party to win in BC next month? Is climate change still an important issue for BC voters? You worked to get BC's LNG industry started, with over 15 potential projects expected at one point; what is your view on the industry now? Is more electrical generation capacity needed to meet future demand, besides the Site C hydro dam? Now that it has started, how do people feel about the Trans Mountain expansion oil pipeline? With the federal NDP ripping up their agreement to cooperate with the Liberals, do you expect the federal election will occur sooner than October 2025? What are the chances that Justin Trudeau will withdraw from the federal Liberal leadership before the election? Do you have any federal political aspirations?Content referenced in this podcast:Current polling of BC provincial election at 388canada.com Please review our disclaimer at: https://www.arcenergyinstitute.com/disclaimer/  Check us out on social media: X (Twitter): @arcenergyinstLinkedIn: @ARC Energy Research Institute Subscribe to ARC Energy Ideas PodcastApple PodcastsAmazon MusicSpotify

This week, our guest is Roger Dall'Antonia, President and CEO of FortisBC.  FortisBC is a leading energy provider in British Columbia (BC), Canada. The utility serves about 1.1 million natural gas customers and 185,000 electricity customers. Roger explains the benefits of using natural gas to meet the peak winter heating demand and the challenges of using electricity to do the same. Because of the unique ability of gaseous fuels to flex up and meet demand, even on the coldest days, Roger sees a long-term future for gas. He explains how natural gas can become cleaner over time through a broad set of measures, such as increasing the amount of renewable natural gas (RNG) and clean hydrogen and efficiency measures that use less natural gas.  Here are some of the questions that Peter and Jackie asked Roger: What is the outlook for the supply and demand of electricity in BC? How will Site C hydroelectric demand change the market? Is BC too reliant on hydro, considering concerns around drought? Why has BC recently decided to launch a call for renewable power from large-scale wind and solar farms? What is RNG and how much potential supply is there? How are you involving Indigenous partners in your projects? What are your thoughts on the Clean Electricity Regulations targeting net zero electricity by 2035? Considering Atlantic Canada's exception from the retail carbon tax for heating oil, could this be the beginning of the end for the retail carbon tax in Canada?  Other content referenced in this podcast:  Other content referenced in this podcast:  The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP)'s Data Centre FortisBC's Clean Growth Pathway to 2050 BC Renewable and Low-Carbon Gas Supply Potential Study Pathways for British Columbia to Achieve its GHG Reduction Goals  Please review our disclaimer at: https://www.arcenergyinstitute.com/disclaimer/  Check us out on social media: X (Twitter): @arcenergyinst LinkedIn: @ARC Energy Research Institute Subscribe to ARC Energy Ideas Podcast Apple Podcasts Google Podcasts Amazon Music Spotify

On this episode of The Construction Record Podcast, digital media editor Warren Frey discusses Renew Canada's 2024 list of Canada's top infrastructure projects with Renew editor John Tenpenny. As with previous years, health infrastructure projects made a strong showing due to pandemic-era spending increases to deal with the current health crisis and any future ones. Transit also continued to dominate the list across Canada, Tenpenny said, with over a quarter of the list's projects. He also noted most energy projects are focused on hydroelectric transmission and nuclear power rather than fossil fuels, and pointed to most highway projects as focused on maintenance and upgrades. Tenpenny added megaprojects such as Site C in British Columbia are so large that even as they near completion the “wind down” process still takes some time and other large projects are coming through the infrastructure pipeline in the next two to five years.    You can listen to The Construction Record on the Daily Commercial News and Journal of Commerce websites as well as on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon Music's podcast section.
