In this episode, we discussed: How Monique was able to carve out a distinctive brand in the residential market How she was able to identify with her ideal clients and put her authentic self forward in her marketing and communications. Monique's techniques for winning new types of work, whether it's through video or self-generated project ideas. The steps she took to uncover new opportunities for WOWOWA to contribute to the local community through public projects and collaborations. How you can develop a stronger personal brand in architecture. Monique's tips for figuring out your point of difference. The importance of finding mentors and teachers along the way. Monique London is the owner and creative director of the all-natural and organic beauty brand London Ivy. Apart from her beauty brand, Monique is the founder of Black Beauty Brunch. This event started in 2016 and began as a meet and greet event for Toronto's self-identified black women, which has then evolved into a “judgment-free safe space where women can come and have an open forum to explore their concepts of self-love, beauty ideals, and representation.” As Monique would describe it, it is a place where black women are given room to take off their armor, reset, learn, and leave feeling celebrated. “I am not the exception for you. You don't just have ‘Monique, the black friend.' Monique is a black woman that represents the fact that black women are all different.” - Monique London Having studied in North Bay, Ontario, Monique talks about the struggles of being a minority in the university, sometimes being the only black woman in class. This made her realize the importance of having a safe space where she would talk openly, surrounded by people like her. This experience began her journey on starting Black Beauty Brunch. “Black Beauty Brunch -- it kind of throws people for a loop, because some people see the name and they assume it's going to be like a make-up show, or they assume it's going to be about skin care… No, it's about the actual woman.” - Monique London Monique also talks about how and why she started her beauty brand, London Ivy. She talks about the processes she had to learn and experience, the challenges of being in the beauty industry, and the advice she would give to young entrepreneurs. "Do enough work that when you get there, you can be happy there, and you're not struggling and drowning." - Monique London As an entrepreneur, Monique talks about the value of self-reflection and “unlearning” to achieve the right mindset to be successful. Aside from being an entrepreneur, Monique also talks about being a mother and raising her daughter, whom she has also named “London Ivy.” IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: What Black Beauty Brunch is, and how it started How Monique's experiences in university that began her journey to starting Black Beauty Brunch How and why she started her beauty brand, London Ivy. Facebook Groups take a bad rap for being a time-waster… and it totally can be. But how do you actually use them well as a part of your marketing strategy? When used effectively, Facebook groups can be a great way to help grow your business both online and locally. On this week’s on-air strategy session, Monique Horb of Organizing Your Chaos and I talk about how to use her growing Facebook group to transition from done-for-you local work. Monique is a professional organizer who helps clients to declutter and organize their spaces. She has been trying to figure out how to transition her business and find more clients in the online space. We discuss how she got into her business, her goals for where she wants to take her business next and what her hesitations are around being visible. If you’ve been wanting to grow your local business and reach more clients on the online space, then this is the episode for you. We talk about: How Monique got into organizing How Monique got started in her business as a professional organizer What she does for her clients Monique’s ideal client What Monique’s goals are for her business Figuring out how to transition her business What she currently does for marketing Monique’s hesitation about being visible How she finds her clients Her offboarding process for past clients Using community questions as a part of her marketing strategy The importance of welcoming people into her Facebook group Figuring out how to nurture clients Monique's process for working with clients How she can market herself in her group without selling Using social media as a visibility piece About Monique Horb: Monique Horb has a passion for helping women who are busy, tired, and overwhelmed. She does this by organizing homes and paper piles so that women can be more productive, have time and energy to live their purpose, and live the life they want. She loves to say, Life Is Easier Organized! She began her business, Organizing Your Chaos, after experiencing depression, bankruptcy, adoption, marriage and medical crisis. These things were out of her control, and her home was falling apart. Through twists and turns, she learned that with an organized home she was able to manage. Monique was raised in southwest Michigan and graduated from Taylor University, a Christian college in Indiana, with a BA in Sociology & Psychology. She met her husband through a friend while working at Spring Hill Camps in Michigan. They have been married for twenty-five years and have six children, two dogs and a cat. Her life experiences have pushed her out of her comfort zone and shaped the business that she created. She loves to coach women in not only organizing their homes, but organizing their lives. She knows that the simple (yet difficult) act of getting your home organized gives hope to move forward and do what God has created them to d. Hope propels us forward, gives confidence, and allows changes to happen. This changes lives. When asked, “How do you do it?” she responds, “I get up and get dressed.” She believes that being willing to take off the mask, ask for help and work hard, alongside a faith in God, has changed her life. She continues to help women change their lives, and shares that we are all better when we are in community together. What Does It Take To Be A Successful Female Entrepreneur? My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a lady who was previously on the show back on episode 251, where we had a very deep conversation around self sabotaging ones careers, even when things are going just as you hoped they would. Back then she told us “I was a freelance writer, for a small Sydney magazine, before I realised a dream to help others create the lifestyle that they truly deserved. I use the word ‘deserved' with intention. It was one of my first, big spiritual realisations: We are not all living our highest potential, we deserve so much more than we've been taught to expect.” That's a fascinating insight not just to this ladies outlook, but also life itself. Why are we taught from such a small age to be realistic, be practical and leave the dreaming to, well the dreamers. Shouldn't we be encouraging people to go for the mad stuff, the big stuff, the stuff that real dreams are made off? Challenging them to grow to the highest potential possible? Well since 2006 our guests life has been one intertwined with the all of this and more, and with such personal values such as laugh regularly, think differently, be persistent, be abundant (and give generously) and live what you love, she has clients flocking to her business looking for a similar mind-set to propel them to success. So where did her positive outlook really kick in and allow her to speed forward to success? And why has she rebranded her work from self names to beautifully wild? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show, to start joining up dots, with the one and only Monique Williams. Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty topics with Monique Williams such as: How Monique now realises that she can now charge premium prices in her business and bring better quality clients into her business. Less customers, less hassle and more money....perfect! Why she now sees that she is more condensed and precise as to what she is offering. She knows her stuff, and knows how to deliver what her clients truly need. Monique recalls how her marketing messages were not congruent with how she truly was, and why it took a client to point out the error of her ways. and lastly…. Why we both believe that ladies should only share one part of themselves when they go out clubbing and what that part should be! Truly deep stuff!
