Sometimes you just need to be around black women. The story that black women don't support each other is a myth. The story that we are infinitely strong and resilient is also a lie. Sometimes, you need to lay aside the strength and let go of the resilience and just take a pause. Take off the mask. Take off the armor. And just have a little banana pudding and peach cobbler. And a few adult beverages. And talk about the stuff that just makes you crazy without having to explain the backstory. She and I discuss her experience being a Black cheerleader at UNC-Chapel Hill, why she decided to join Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and what she hopes to accomplish within the organization, her close connection to her younger sister and mother, and understanding her value as a role model. Sieway explains why she wishes people asked her more questions, how she's mastering staying true to herself no matter the people she's around, and why quarantine allowed for more self-exploration and discovery. I also hear about the hard work required to succeed in the world of gymnastics (and how the sport has shifted for Black girls), and Sieway recaps her transition from gymnastics to cheerleading. The original idea was to organize a party that would promote the annual pride exhibit for  Casa Frela Art Gallery. Carmen Neely with Lawrence Rodriguez built that original idea into what would later be called “Harlem Pride.” As the idea of a Harlem Pride celebration began to spread, they decided to expand the idea, especially after learning that there had never been a formal public celebration in Harlem. Since 2010, Harlem Pride has expanded to include community forums, workshops, networking events, and other community outreach activities. Neely designed the original logo and began wearing a t-shirt with the design at a popular poetry night. The Harlem Pride logo is a symbolic representation of the Adam Clayton Powell State Office Building, the tallest building in Harlem. The very first Harlem Pride Day Celebration was held on Saturday, June 26, 2010, on the block of W. 119th Street, between Lenox and Fifth Avenues.  Harlem Pride is always held during the last full weekend in June. Harlem Pride's mission is to empower Harlem’s SGL/LGBTQ community (which includes, family, friends, and allies) to improve its physical, mental, and economic health and wellness. Originally from Charlotte, NC Neely graduated from Howard University with a BFA in Theatre and a minor in Film Production. She also holds a Master of Science in Teaching from Fordham University. Although managing Harlem Pride keeps her very busy, she is also an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc and other Harlem based LGBTQ organizations.
