Robert Christgau in 1974 referred to this album as "a waste". However! Given time, commonsense, two ears, and a 2001 re-release on David Burn's record label; Shuggie Otis' Inspiration Information finally gets the attention and respect it deserves. Self-produced, almost exclusively self-tracked, borrowing from funk, psych, soul, and lounge; this album stands as testament to Shug's singular vision.

When I was six I wanted to be Michael Jackson. By age 13 I discovered A Tribe Called Quest via a skate video and I've never looked back. 20 years later and I'm still obsessed with creating soulful music that keeps heads bobbing. I'm calling this one "Inspiration Information" after the Shuggie Otis classic. It's a collection of tracks that have stayed on my mind of recent and inspire me to keep creating. Homer Steinweiss is not only the greatest drummer of his generation, but a producer and songwriter whose understated humility belies an immense list of fantastic credits. The rhythmic spine of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings and the Menahan Street Band, Homer has also lent his incredible feel on the drums to records by everyone from Amy Winehouse and Bruno Mars to Al Green and Rufus Wainwright. He's also a frequent collaborator of Mark Ronson, including on his recent smash Uptown Special album. Homer joins host Jeremy Dylan to talk about Shuggie Otis's cult classic soul album “Inspiration Information”. They talk about how Shuggie's pioneering use of drum machines has influenced his ideas of rhythm, playing as a one man band vs. playing live with a band like the Dap Kings, why Shuggie's vocal style is so atypical for R&B, the similarities to Sly and the Family Stone's “There's A Riot Going On” album and more. Plus, Homer reveals his favorite album of 2015 so far, how he balances his approach between different albums and artists, and friend of the show Rose Elinor Dougall drops in to pay tribute to Homer and ask him what it was like to work on St Vincent's latest album. My Favorite Album is a podcast unpacking the great works of pop music. Each episode features a different songwriter or musician discussing their favorite album of all time - their history with it, the making of the album, individual songs and the album's influence on their own music. Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker, journalist and photographer from Sydney, Australia who has worked in the music industry since 2007. He directed the the feature music documentary Jim Lauderdale: The King of Broken Hearts (out now!) and the feature film Benjamin Sniddlegrass and the Cauldron of Penguins, in addition to many commercials and music videos. Did I like listening to Shuggie Otis’s album “Inspiration Information”? Yeah, I did. A lot. So did everybody else recording this show with me. It’s not often you get to see the blueprint of a musical paradigm. The record was a little shaky, especially after the first 5 or 6 songs, but wow, what a first 5 or 6 songs. It reminded me of the old quote about the Velvet Underground and everybody that bought their records creating a band… This album is flawed for sure, but I feel like it’s impossible that Hall and Oates, Prince, Average White Band, Lenny Kravitz, Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers, and countless others would have become the hit-makers they became…or fuck, even found their signature sounds, without listening to this listless prodigy. Listless. It’s hard to hear a burgeoning genius like this go down with such a whimper…we talk about it a lot in this show… OK…got that out of my system. Pick Up "Inspiration Information" on Amazon ### A Few Minutes With ### Ryan picked [“Hollaback Girl”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZHjRQjbHrE) for “A Few Minutes With” this go round. Pretty sure if it were more than a few minutes, Phil might have throttled Ryan. Something about bananas. Coming Up Next week…Camper Van Beethoven’s “Key Lime Pie” Sounds Delicious. HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Well, we fucking did it. We went ahead and recorded a show without Kevin. The only adult “Somebody Likes It” has really known thus far. I wasn’t sure that Ryan and I could hold the motherfucking jalopy together, but god was willing and the creek didn’t rise (and with a liberal dose of help from Mark) we got it done! WE DID IT!!!!! (Cue America the Beautiful at an ear-splitting volume. And little shiny shit falling from the ceiling) We discussed “Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space” by Spiritualized. Along with the best damn album title ever, this thing is a pretty solid listen! I guess we made fun of Ryan’s choice of snacks (again) and started getting used to recording this thing in a new garage. Oh and wait. I forgot about this week’s “A Few Minutes With”. Well, not as much forgot as punched myself in the god-damned forehead in an attempt to forget. And here’s where stuff gets kind of complicated. See, I had just assumed that Kevin, with his DAD HUMOR and SADISTIC HUMOR had, as his final pick for a month or two, given us the hilarious-for-half-a-listen-two-summers-ago “What Does The Fox Say”, to get in one last sadistic swing. Well, turns out, Mark thinks that shit is HILARIOUS. So, I guess that seals the deal. Mark is just as much the voice of Adulthood as Kevin ever was. Except Kevin never had an animatronic fox that danced around his garage and sang the song. So I guess Mark has him beat there. So, my pick next week. We will get back to the 70’s with Shuggie Otis and his incredibly influential album “Inspiration Information”. At some point a Gwen Stefani song will pop up. See ya then…
