Send us a textWe live our lives knowing that we have an expiration date. Nobody gets out of here alive. As we age, we become more keenly aware of that date. Many become filled with fear as it approaches. That sense of fear causes them to stop doing the things which are critical to living a full life. They stop laughing, giving and being kind. They forget how to “keep it real.”In his newest book, Keep On Keeping On, Dr. Mark Rutland explores the keys to making the most out of life as we age. With humorous stories, he has crafted the “gold standard” for making the most of our “golden years.” In this episode of Finish Strong, he shares many of those stories. Be prepared to laugh and learn. After hanging out with Mark, you'll want to face the rest of your life with a renewed sense of energy and purpose. In this episode, I speak with filmmaker, mentor, activist, and co-founder of Re-Present Media, Jennifer Crystal Chien. During our conversation, we chatted about how she got into docs, her commitment to advocacy, and the field-building and changing work at Re-Present Media. Jennifer's theory of change for the field is rooted in liberation and the spirit of the song she picked for this week's episode by the late great Curtis Mayfield, “Keep On Keeping On.”

HAPPY MONDAY MOTIVATION Welcome back to the weekly podcast, No More Excuses. Thank you for being here, for listening and sharing this podcast with others! Last Monday's podcast was about Mindset. Mindset. MINDSET! Having a positive mindset means keeping your head on straight when shit goes sideways, or you get behind like I have recently. How about YOU? Do you keep a positive mindset when you get off-track? Do you shut down that negative chatter in your head when you make a mistake? Do you keep yourself from spiraling and getting overwhelmed when shit goes sideways? Well, if you don't, you should probably contact me! 2022 has been another weird year. Some people and clients I know have had a GREAT start to the year, while others have not. And as we start reaching for Spring, it's also the last month of the first quarter of the year. As many people do, and I always suggest, start really digging into your goals and watching your progress, no matter how small it may seem… to YOU. Listen in this week as I talk about the "ONLY" syndrome! Yes, we've all said it, "I ONLY did, lost or got [fill in the blank]!" Learning to accept those baby steps – with pride – can be hard, but I promise you it will be rewarding! And that's in LIFE and with BUSINESSES as well! Keep chugging away. Keep chipping away at the to-do list, the idea list, the debt, the seemingly endless hours. Keep the faith when it's hard too. Keep climbing! Keep asking. KEEP ON KEEPING ON! BUT HOW? I've had my shares of worry, stress, meltdowns as well. When it happens to you, shift your mindset. Think about a time when you made that shift from the negative “WHY am I doing this, why keep going, how the hell is this going to work?” to the “I got this", and "this is WHY I am doing this!" "This is why I get up every day and try again!” We're human! It's hard to be positive every damn day. It's hard to take compliments and comments that are meant to pull you out of that rabbit hole of a shitty mindset. It's hard NOT to wonder when you'll turn that corner or reach the top of “your” Mount Everest! And, it doesn't matter if you're male or female! Listen in as I discuss more about how to KEEP FIGHTING when you're tired, stressed and overwhelmed. And then remember... “The people who think they are crazy enough to change the world, are the ones who do.” ~Steve Jobs That is where the confidence has to win. Yes, there will be shit days. Days you want to throw in the towel, and wondering WHY vs. the WHY that Simon Sinek suggests you start with. When I make that shift, and that feeling and confidence comes over me, I know that I am crazy enough to change the world (no matter how tiny of a piece I think it is)…. Are you? Cheers! Sandi

HAPPY MONDAY MOTIVATION! Welcome back to the weekly podcast (yes 220 weeks in-a-row!) No More Excuses! Thank you for being here, listening, sharing the podcast with others, and taking the time to INVEST IN YOU! It's mid-June and it's been a WILD friggn ride! Have you [RE]Opened? Gone back to work? Working, but still from home? All I know is... I'm TIRED! All this back and forth and maybe, but not yet, ok now, but not you, is giving me a case of whiplash! Last week's podcast was more about the continued uncertainty and chaos going on and looking at how you can help others. Were you able to help someone? Did you try or at least offer? Listen in this week as I share a conversation I had with my (almost) 25 year old daughter and how after getting a "back to work" start date, she finally feels like she can PLAN! It's why I LOVE to have clients set deadlines, people NEED them to plan accordingly! Yes, shit happens to knock you off track! We've all seen that this year so far. But it also is there to help you NOT give up! KEEP ON KEEPING ON! And yes, as businesses [RE]open, pivot, change and continue as Business Unusual, it's now time to look to the future. We also talked about how at the beginning of this PANDAMNIT, people had good intentions of "getting it all done". Many have, and many realized they had too much going on and, well, others decided they too needed to stop and take a breath. Again, listen in as I share a conversation I had with a client who [RE]opened about five weeks ago. We discussed her new processes and procedures and how she can continue to look forward. How being diligent, intentional and focused can help YOU look forward and see the future a little clearer! And, if you are having trouble or want some help - click here to email me - register for my SIX WEEKS TO [RE]Start 2020! Weekly calls. Goals. Plan. $300 Have a great week! Cheers! Sandi
HAPPY MONDAY MOTIVATION! Welcome back to the weekly podcast No More Excuses! We're SO CLOSE, but are we? Many states are open, opening and others are preparing for the re-emergence. What I have seen is people are READY to get out and BE OUT! And to be around people. But are you ready? In last week's podcast, my friend Chandra Medina shared some tips surrounding the continued theme of "purging" specifically focusing on purging negative thoughts and how to replace them with more positive ones. Yes, again, easier said than done, but even I had to use her tips! This has been a very chaotic time, so more than ever we need to catch ourselves, and continue to PURGE! And... work on our attitudes and helping others do the same! It's not easy. People are chippy, anxious and ready to really understand WHAT'S NEXT! And, if you live in California like me, you may not fully understand! How'd you do with purging your mindset? Did you like hearing someone else on the podcast? Email me and let me know! And now, listen in this week as I continue to challenge you to prepare for the re-emergence with purging, and I share some examples of how some people I heard from last week manage their negative thoughts and well how I've also heard, and seen, people NOT doing well on social media and unfortunately out in public! No matter where you are on this "roller coaster ride", we need to stop judging and focus on doing OUR best. And, listen in, as I am about to hit a milestone with my podcasts and it's because of YOU - sharing the podcasts with others, so listen in on how 5 people will win $500 in coaching! Again, please, let's KEEP ON KEEPING ON, and take that one step further and help someone else do the same. PS - FREE WEBINAR WEDS, JUNE 1st! I'll talk about pivoting, mindset, strategies, and doing your best Click here to register! Cheers! Sandi

What happens when 2 dedicated Rush fans try to convert someone into the fold? Let's find out! During this wide ranging discussion, Tim and our guest Mike talk about their love for some of Canada's favorite musical sons and provide some entry points for Todd. This is actually a really cool episode where we of course focus on Rush, but also get into a fairly fun tangent on jazz trumpet player Clark Terry, whom it turns out we all some connection to as well. Enjoy! LINKS OF INTEREST:- Here's the trailer for the Rush documentary Beyond The Lighted Stage.- Todd was being foolish when talking about U2 briefly during this episode... Neil Peart during Drum Solo Week on Letterman back in 2011.- Clark Terry was THE MAN. On September 12, 2019, Brian J. Daugherity delivered the Banner Lecture, “Keep on Keeping On: The NAACP and the Implementation of Brown v. Board of Education in Virginia.” The lecture coincided with the museum’s exhibition, "Determined: The 400-Year Struggle for Black Equality." Virginia played a central role in the process of school desegregation. The state was home to one of the five cases decided in Brown v. Board of Education—Davis v. Prince Edward County, filed after a student strike against inferior school facilities in Farmville. After the Brown decision was handed down in 1954, Virginia helped to launch and guide the movement against school desegregation, known as massive resistance. Despite this, proponents of change sought the implementation of Brown v. Board of Education in the commonwealth, and in the 1960s their efforts led to additional legal victories that sped up the process of school desegregation nationwide. Brian Daugherity’s latest book, "Keep On Keeping On," tells the story of the implementation of Brown v. Board of Education in Virginia. It examines the official reaction to Brown and the massive resistance movement but focuses on the overlooked strategies and efforts of the proponents of school desegregation. The story highlights the role of the Virginia State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Dr. Brian J. Daugherity, associate professor of history at Virginia Commonwealth University, is an expert on the civil rights era in the commonwealth. He is the coeditor with Charles C. Bolton of "With All Deliberate Speed: Implementing Brown v. Board of Education" and with Brian Grogin of "A Little Child Shall Lead Them: A Documentary Account of the Struggle for School Desegregation in Prince Edward County, Virginia," and the author of "Keep On Keeping On: The NAACP and the Implementation of Brown v. Board of Education in Virginia.

HAPPY MONDAY MOTIVATION! Welcome back to the weekly podcast No More Excuses! Thank you to all of you who listen in, share and message me! You have empowered me to continue and, by you reaching out, you have had an effect on ME! It's already the 2nd week of July! It's vacation time for some of you, and others are working, like me! If you're here in 'Merica, I hope you had a fun 4th of July and got your fill of fireworks! And now, it's time to get back to it and, well, as I mentioned in last week's podcast, continue to empower others! Also by understanding how by empowering others, you empower yourself! I've talked about this before, but after 170 consecutive weekly podcasts [that's over three years without missing one!] it has crossed my mind to stop. I've wondered, "Is anyone listening?", "Does anyone care what I have to say?", "Am I helping anyone?" And, as soon as it would cross my mind to stop or perhaps try video, I would get an email or DM saying hi or thanking me for helping them, even saying "You've empowered me to help others!" And that's what it's all about, right? When I have received those messages, it re-energized me and empowered me to KEEP ON KEEPING ON! Think about it. How have you, or WHO have you empowered? How has it helped you? We don't always realize right away that what we are doing is making an impact. Again, that's the RIPPLE EFFECT! Listen in this week as I talk about how YOU CAN be the "RIPPLE EFFECTOR"! We all have to play our part in this game called LIFE. And, how you play it does have an effect on others! If you're NOT playing, what are others missing out on? In this week's podcast, I take you through an activity to visualize the effect you can have on others. I hope you take the time to listen in and realize if you don't "stick a toe in the water", as calm and peaceful as it may be, how that does affect others as well. HELL, I'd love you to do a CANNON BALL! If you are afraid to dip that toe in the water, email me right now! Together we will create RIPPLES!! Have an amazing week! Cheers! Sandi
“For gold to be pure, it has to be tested by fire.” - Pastor Daniel Chua Ps Daniel shared a word on perseverance and encouraged us to Keep On Keeping On in the face of trials and setbacks. HAPPY MONDAY MOTIVATION! Welcome back to the weekly podcast No More Excuses! Thank you for reading this, listening and for sharing the podcast. As I begin my FOURTH year of podcasts... (squeals with excitement and amazement) I want to THANK YOU as I wouldn't keep doing this if I didn't see that people are listening and sharing. How else would I get all the way to Ireland and Ghana?!! I was excited when I saw that people in another STATE were listening! So THANK YOU for helping me KEEP ON KEEPING ON!! And now, let's get to it as I was STOKED writing and recording this podcast. Not just because I just finished 3 years, because last week was FULL client meetings, travel and my favorite, the quarterly TABOO! Women's Luncheon (which started it's THIRD year!). I was BUSYYYYY! Yep, I said it. BUSY. My least favorite word. It's my least favorite because people normally use that when they don't know what the hell they did - they weren't productive. But I can tell you EXACTLY what I did last week, and tell you that I WAS PRODUCTIVE! I also wouldn't allow any distractions! However, I did have one... a delay in my flight back to Indy due to mechanical issues. Again, like I talked about last week in my podcast, there are some distractions that you can't avoid - like kids (or you) being sick! Last week I was a machine! I stuck to my lists and my schedule and by the end of the week, I was exhausted and smiling as I planned my next [ad]venture with my TRIBE! Stay tuned for more on that! There are two types of DISTRACTIONS. Those that you can avoid, and those, like life and mechanical issues, that you can't. In last week's podcast I asked you, as you review the 1st Quarter, to let me know what you had allowed to distract you. Weather? Kids Spring Breaks? Uncertainty? Fear? Listen in this week as I talk about how you can limit the distractions, by making ONE decision. It's a BIG decision! I talk about "How Badly Do You Want 'IT'?" which is the title of my second book, but also once you determine that, you have to decide if YOU are WORTH it? I touched on that briefly in last week's podcast. But this week... it's all about YOU! And after the BADASS panel of female Chef's and restaurant owners at the TABOO! Luncheon, it was clear, not that they had goals and a dream, but that they KNEW they were and are WORTH IT! Worth the time, effort, exhaustion. All of it. ARE YOU? I look forward to hearing from you and seeing your posts this week! Cheers! Sandi
HAPPY MONDAY MOTIVATION! Welcome back and thank you for listening to my weekly podcast No More Excuses! Hopefully you can focus for a few minutes and shut out the DISTRACTIONS! Wait! What? Huh? Haha... did your mind wander? Did something catch your attention? It happens. ALL. THE. TIME. Last week's podcast was about "doing a little more each day than you think you can", and in-turn this helps you KEEP ON KEEPING ON! What MORE did you do? What did you realize you were capable of? It's actually more like, "what are you WILLING TO DO for YOU?" To get the results you want and generate progress toward your goals? In last week's podcast I shared a story about how one of my clients and her team were KEEPING ON KEEPING ON! How they were persevering in the face of misfortune. How they were staying focused and doing just a little bit more each day to stay on top of their orders and not fall behind in spite of being short staffed. Another person I heard from – this example ties in one other thing I preach about... REWARDING YOURSELF! Due to allowing distractions to get her off-track, she had fallen behind. Her list kept growing and growing and she was stressed out and frustrated. When she contacted me, we discussed what she COULD DO / was WILLING TO DO to get caught up. I learned that what she had done was cut out any "me-time", no REWARDS, no mental break. Hmmmm. The idea to add back in her "me-time" may seem counter-productive, but, she wasn't allowing herself the time to refocus. Listen in as I talk about what she did and the RESULT! It's cool as how sometimes just ONE conversation can make such a huge shift for someone! And again, what are you WILLING TO DO FOR YOU? Everyone gets off-track. Even ME! Distractions are everywhere. And, as much as I love my lists to stay FOCUSED, that doesn't always keep the distractions of life, and responsibilities away. Listen in this week as I also talk about a client who wasn't responding to my email check-ins, which seemed strange. She had some LIFE distractions in the form of KIDS and DOCTOR appointments. When running a business, you have to figure it out. Yes, RUB YOUR BELLY and PAT YOUR HEAD! She and I spoke briefly, and when we meet we'll see how things are going, and then discuss "what more she can do each day to get back on-track". In this podcast, I also talk about something that distracted me and is now bleeding over into this week as I was told "it would be handled", and now I have to handle it. Trust me, the pointy-shoes are on and the whip is out. When I get to this point, after as much time as I, as well as a few others, have put in, it's time for this DISTRACTION to end! So we can all FOCUS on our clients! Distractions take away your energy, productivity and steal your TIME! But sometimes you can't ignore them, like kids LOL, but you also have to get back on-track. Listen in this week, and because it is the END of March and the close of the 1st Quarter, you'll need to be checking in on your progress toward your goals, you can see what's DISTRACTED (or distracting) you and how did you get back ON track? Or... have you? If the distraction is still an issue, or perhaps you haven't been able to get back on-track (like the person I mentioned above), email me, let's set up a time to chat! Have a great week and I look forward to hearing from you! Cheers! Sandi
HAPPY MONDAY MOTIVATION! Welcome back to the weekly podcast No More Excuses! Thank you for listening and sharing the podcasts! Don't forget to connect with me on your favorite social media platform. Last week I talked about "rubbing your belly and patting your head"! Just trying to keep things moving, and really the point was that no matter how many times we messed up as kids trying to learn HOW to rub your belly and pat your head, we laughed it off and kept trying! So why as adults do we get so easily frustrated? Or even pass judgment when we see someone else mess "it" up? Why do we give up so quickly and say "Screw it, I'll never be good at it!" Let's roll back to our childhood and LAUGH at ourselves and our mistakes. Learn to have fun again and KEEP TRYING! Ironically before I started writing this, I posted on Instagram a quote that said, "Do a little more each day than you think you can." ~Lowell Thomas. And, what then popped into my head was the saying, "Keep On Keeping On!" I've said it many times to clients, and myself. You'll have to listen in as I read what I found on the internet about this saying and how although it is primarily used in a positive way, some people, maybe even YOU, think of it as continuing to "plod along" and just keep doing over and over. For the sake of this podcast, let's Keep On Keeping On, for the sake of persevering. Doing a little more each day than you think you can to help you get through the shitshow! To keep "rubbing your belly and patting your head", right? Listen in as I also talk about a client I met with last week, who truly is practicing how to Keep On Keeping On! And then, I want to hear YOUR stories! Email me or post in the comments how you can do a little more each day. Or if for some reason you're ready to give up, contact me so we can talk! I will teach you how to "rub your belly and pat your head"... again! Have a great week and I look forward to hearing from you. Cheers! Sandi
HAPPY MONDAY MOTIVATION! Welcome back to the weekly podcast No More Excuses! MERRY CHRISTMAS-EVE! You all ROCK! I appreciate you reading this, listening to the podcast (I think some of you actually do listen to it!) AND for those of you who SHARE the podcast! THANK YOU! If you don't share it... please do. It really only take a hot sec! :) It's been a FUN month for me. This was the first year I did the FINISH THE YEAR STRONG CHALLENGE and it's been fun hearing from those who took part, how it's helped them, and it's helped ME as well! Although I'm not quite in the Christmas spirit this year, the FUNtivities are still going on! I achieved my BIG GOAL of finishing my third book, then I kept going by hosting two book release parties! I've sold LOTS of books... and I am NOT STOPPING NOW! One thing a day up until the end of the year. But... why stop there? Let's keep going! Like I talked about in last week's podcast, you have to BUILD UPON where you are and who you are TODAY! The progress and success you've had. Why would I stop trying to promote my book? It's a marketing tool! If you hit your sales goals, why wouldn't you try to do that again? If you achieved your weight loss goal, it's not over! You have to KEEP IT OFF! Maintain, right? So, listen in this week as I talk about a huge challenge I recently had, like many of you. Sometimes you have to be grateful that shit happens as hit helps you DIG DEEPER, and... KEEP GOING! Even if you just started (like a new client of mine!) I look forward to hearing from you after you listen in! Have a Merry Christmas and... KEEP ON KEEPING ON! You have SEVEN DAYS LEFT! Even if you're off work, there's things you can do for YOU! You've got this! Cheers! Sandi

"Keep On Keeping On" Straightforward life advice but also extremely powerful. Nothing can stop you if you just keep putting one foot in front of the other and barreling forward towards your goals. This week we proudly bring you the story of the non-profit organization Keep on Keeping whose intent is to "assist those living with physical disabilities and educating and empowering others to make a difference in their communities." To demonstrate the power of this mantra, Keep On Keeping On's president, and all around awesome guy, Tim Wambach decided he would spend 40 days running 1,000 miles from Orlando, Florida to Chicago, Illinois...twice. Throughout these two attempts it is fair to say that Tim faced major adversity. Fatigue, blisters, rain, humidity, extreme heat (running in a Florida August and September will do that), blisters, decision fatigue, and did we mention...blisters??? And how he overcame these obstacles is nothing short of inspiring! Along with the 40 day endurance challenge, in this episode Tim explains why and how he founded Keep On Keeping On and the formation of his two man show "Handicap This!" He also talks about how befriending his speaking partner Mike Berkson, a funny and bright person living with cerebral palsy opened his eyes to the challenges faced by those living with severe disabilities. Tim is a tremendous role model of why we should just jump right in when pursuing a goal and I was so honored to have him on the podcast to share his story. To hear more from Tim or to support the cause, please check out his foundation at www.teamkoko.org, his speaking engagements at www.handicapthis.com, and his "Boss Free Society Podcast." Thanks again for listening! Have a great holiday season and keep striving to make the world a better place!

The short version of the story is that by virtue of his virtuosity, Clark Terry was chosen by both Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Further on down the line, Clark Terry chose to help and mentor Miles Davis and Quincy Jones. I can stop there. But I am going to keep on keeping on, do you know that Keep On Keeping On is the name of a documentary that just came out this year, that is about Clark Terry, still mentoring, late in his life. The film chronicles him and time he spent with a blind pianist who is about 1/4th his age. Interested and teaching until the very end, my friends. I like the saying, Keep On Keepin' On. My 1st memory of it was hearing my Dad's father say it - his name was Reverend Hiawatha Coleman, the pastor at Mt. Zion Baptist Church on 50th & Woodland in Southwest Philadelphia, from 1955 until 1986. Keep on keeping on was on the wall in that church and it may still be until this day. http://articles.philly.com/1989-12-04/news/26158432_1_pastor-emeritus-doctor-of-divinity-degree-churches-and-four One day, I named my son, Thelonious Hiawatha Coleman. In the very near future, like in the 2nd hour, you will hear a collaboration between Thelonious Monk and Clark Terry followed by Clark's rendition of Thelonious Monk's Straight No Chaser. I wondered while doing this show, if it is possible that one person fully represents the full spectrum of Jazz? The style, the grace, the happiness on the face. Able to go any place, and any place you go, people are glad to see you, happy to have you and eager to hear you. That Jazz life. I like that life. Possibilities seem endless. Endless opportunities to enjoy life and what you do seem possible. If you've never given Jazz a chance, here's your chance. This is my chance to do what I can to keep on with the keeping on of something genius, elegant and far reaching. This is Qool DJ Marv Wishing you steps forward, lots of love truth and hope, and imagining good tidings for all.
