When you think of rock music anchored by piano, there are only a few standouts. But outside of Elton John, perhaps the best known rock pianist is New York's Billy Joel. Born in the Bronx and growing up in Long Island, Joel got his start early (at age 4) with piano lessons and dropped out of high school to pursue music full time. After joining a couple of short-lived bands, Joel started his solo career and released his debut album, "Cold Spring Harbor" in 1971.It was his second album which would be remembered as his true nationwide debut. Piano Man was his first release from Columbia Records, and came out while Joel was still dealing with legal issues from his former label. Many of the tracks exhibit a story telling approach common in the early 70's. Although Joel was in his mid-20's when the album was released, it had a maturity about it that made it do well both on the pop and adult contemporary charts. Despite this being his breakthrough album, Joel would struggle to find success in his follow-up albums. He was in danger of being dropped by the record label when he hit it big once again in 1977 with "The Stranger." From that time on, Billy Joel would be an A-list performer, capping off a long career with a decade-long residency at Madison Square Garden.Wayne takes us through this breakthrough album for this week's podcast. Piano ManThe title track was written while Billy Joel was working at The Executive Room piano bar in Los Angeles, and is loosely based on the patrons that came through the bar told from the perspective of the piano player. It would become both his signature song and synonymous with Joel. "Son, can you play me a memory...I'm not really sure how it goes, but it's sad, and it's sweet, and I knew it complete when I wore a younger man's clothes."You're My HomeThis song was the B-side of the "Piano Man" single, so it did get some air play. The song has a country feel, and was written for Joel's first wife. He could not afford to buy her anything while in California between record deals, and he wrote it as a Valentine's present. The Ballad of Billy the KidIf the last song was country, this next song is the Western. This is an epic that pays tribute to a fictionalized Billy the Kid, telling a story of an outlaw in the Wild West. The last verse switches to modern times, with Billy Joel taking the place of Billy the Kid, looking forward to new exploits. Captain JackAn early live radio performance of this song is what got the attention of Columbia Records in the first place. Joel wrote the song when living in Oyster Bay, Long Island, in an apartment from which he could see drug deals going down. "Captain Jack" is the local drug dealer, and the song reflects the sadness that comes from a life in the grip of heroin. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Gypsy Woman by Bill Dean (from the motion picture "The Lords of Flatbush")This movie starred Henry Winkler and Sylvester Stallone before they became famous for playing The Fonz and Rocky respectively. STAFF PICKS:For the Love of Money by the O'JaysBruce starts the staff picks with a well known funk tune that went to number 9 on the Billboard Singles chart. This song takes its title from I Timothy 6:10, "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in thier greediness, and pierced themselves through." It also was Donald Trump's WWE entrance music.Benny and the Jets by Elton JohnLynch brings us another piano artist, singing about a fictional glam-rock band. "Oh, but they're weird and they're wonderful. Oh, Bennie, she's really keen. She's got electric boots, a mohair suit, you know I read it in a magazine." The lyrics are told from the perspective of a fan at a concert.Rikki Don't Lose that Number by Steely DanRob's staff pick is the lead track to Steely Dan's third album, "Pretzel Logic." It is also their most commercially successful single, peaking at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The inspiration for this jazz-infused rock song was a New York writer and artist named Rikki Ducornet. Future Eagles alum Timothy B. Schmit provides backing vocals.Bad Company by Bad CompanyWayne features a song that is from the self-titled album AND the self-titled group. The inspiration for this song was a Clint Eastwood western, and it is both a lament and a celebration. "Rebel souls, deserters we are called. Chose a gun, and threw away the sun...". INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Tubular Bells by Mike OldfieldWe close out to a song that was both a hit at the time, and would be immortalized in the horror film "The Exorcist." She's My Kind of Girl". Wanna know how Steely Dan's Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter became a missile defence expert? Take a listen to this week's episode. Best-known for his work with Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers, JEFF "SKUNK" BAXTER's versatility and technique as a soloist made him a hugely in-demand session guitarist from the '70s on. Jeff (who still refuses to disclose the origins of his nickname) landed his first recording gig in 1969 with the psychedelic pop group Ultimate Spinach. In 1972, he began his association with Steely Dan, playing on their debut album, Can't Buy a Thrill. Following 1974's Pretzel Logic, Jeff moved on to the Doobie Brothers, debuting later that year on What Once Were Vices Are Now Habits and continuing on for several more albums through 1978. During the mid-'70s, he also began to expand his session work, going on to work with the likes of Dolly Parton, Barbra Streisand, Rod Stewart, Bryan Adams, Ringo Starr, Carly Simon, Donna Summer, Joni Mitchell, Rick Nelson among many others. Jeff's general interest in technology led him into production, most notably helming several albums for hard rockers Nazareth. He also developed an interest in military hardware and weapons systems and was hired in 2001 by the Bush administration as a defence analyst, also serving as a consultant to several U.S. congressmen (whilst continuing his music career). I hope you'll join me as I sit down and chat with the world-renowned guitarist to explore his incredible journey in music. From early beginnings at the age of five, to the legendary bands he's played with, and his journey to launching his first solo album, "Speed of Heat", this episode of A Breath of Fresh Air is riveting. Jeff shares about the intimacy of the guitar, his first band that was "way too nuts and way too much fun," and the secrets to his enduring success. We go behind the scenes of the iconic songwriting duo of Donald Fagan and Walter Becker, and learn how they made their mark in the music industry. Jeff walks us through his life and times. It's an incredible story about one helluva talented man. For more information about Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter check out his website https://www.jeffskunkbaxter.com/ If you'd like to request a guest get in touch with me through my website here I hope you enjoy this week's show.

Legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist of the Doobie Bros & founding member of the band Steely Dan In 1972 he became a founding member of the band Steely Dan, along with guitarist Denny Dias, bassist Walter Becker, keyboardist-vocalist Donald Fagen, drummer/vocalist Jim Hodder and vocalist David Palmer. Baxter appeared with Steely Dan on their first three albums, Can't Buy a Thrill in 1972, Countdown to Ecstasy in 1973, and Pretzel Logic in 1974. He contributed the guitar fills and signature solo heard on the group's highest charting hit " Rikki Don't Lose That Number." in 1974 to join The Doobie Brothers, who at the time were touring in support of their fourth album What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits. As a session man, he had contributed pedal steel guitar on Vices as well as "South City Midnight Lady" on its predecessor, The Captain and Me. Baxter's first album as a full member of the group was 1975's Stampede. He contributed an acoustic interlude ("Precis") and significant turns on slide and pedal steel guitar.

Guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter was an original Steely Dan member who played on the band's indelible first three albums: Can't Buy a Thrill, Countdown to Ecstasy and Pretzel Logic. Those are his memorable solos on “My Old School” and “Rikki Don't Lose That Number.” When Steely Dan quit touring, he found more success with the Doobie Brothers and eventually brought in singer Michael McDonald, who pushed that band in a more soulful, keyboards-heavy direction. Skunk left to do more studio and touring work and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with the Doobies. After all these years, he finally released his first-ever solo album, Speed of Heat. Oh, and in his "day job," he games out war scenarios for the U.S. government. He has a lot to reel in in this ear-opening Caropop conversation.
CONTENT WARNING: We discuss a song on Katy Lied that is impossible to talk about without delving into general creepiness and discussion of a pedophile. This was uncomfortable for us to cover and is likely uncomfortable for some to listen to. The segment happens from 01:26:58 - 01:31:16. Please exercise caution when listening. Nicky Flowers and Echo Vessel are two best friends with a lifelong love of music. They also happen to have an infrequent podcast about it. Picking Up Something Good is a limited event prestige podcast from Noise Space and neo-detritus where Nicky and Meys run through all of Steely Dan's output, all Dancember long. This week, Zac Emerson of Doom Trip Records joins us to talk about some Major Dude Music - 1974's Pretzel Logic. After the break - a return to Skunk Corner and a trip through 1975's Katy Lied. Sorry for hating.

Any major dude will tell you how great Kellogg's cards were in the 1970's. Lesser known is the sets that featured some of the greatest players of the 20th century, in full color: The 1972 Kellogg's All-Time Great set. Smarter people than I will tell you it was a direct copy of the 1970 Rold Gold Pretzels set of 1970. Imagine my surprise when I bought the wrong set for cheaper than I was supposed to. The first time I listened to Steely Dan's album Pretzel Logic in my buddy Darrel Heald's Buick on the way to an AZA meeting at the JCC was a religious experience. The year, 1974. I, a fourteen-year—old bundle of swagger, insecurity, angst, zits, big hair and bell bottoms, limitless curiosity about reward with almost zero regard for risk. I was both certain and confused about the world and my place in it. Then, I heard that melody and those words. Listen to the song here

A disfrutarlo!
This week we're discussing every album by the one and only Steely Dan. Led by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, Steely Dan is known for pioneering yacht rock, as well as being one of the most recognizable dad rock bands on the planet. People love these guys. People also really hate them, too. Let's just say we have a healthy mix of both on this episode. It's been a wild start to the new year with all of the storms. And there's a battle brewing with people blaming public health policies for empty store shelves across Nova Scotia. But to me, it's a bit of a stretch to blame everything on one thing.

Vicki opens the show talking about the Doubek case, currently before the Wisconsin Supreme Court, which deals with retrospective revocation of concealed carry licenses. Then Sen. Ron Johnson joins us to talk about COIVD, the COVID gods and about his recent townhall on staying healthy during a COVID surge - and how he was attacked for it. Next, Brett Healy, president of the MacIver Institute, tries to answer the question, "Why is Evers asking the government for money and manpower to staff Wisconsin hospitals?" Marc Morano, founder of Climate Depot, explains why the nation's stockpiles of coal are at an all time low. The Blue Line Lawyer, Lance LoRusso, talks about the Kim Potter trial and denial of the national crime spike by some DAs. Plus, Matt Kittle, executive director of Wisconsin Spotlight and Empower Wisconsin, talks about the challenges by Legislative Audit Bureau to the Wisconsin Election Commission and WEC's reaction.
We're back after an unexplained hiatus, talking in-depth about a pivotal album in Steely Dan history, the 1974 classic "Pretzel Logic". As Becker & Fagen's vision for the band mutates into a largely studio-based operation, their conceptualization of songs and the way the music is recorded starts to change. This album introduces more sophisticated song structures, clearer recording approaches, and an increase in session players and guest musicians. Steely Dan starts to leave behind the "quirky songs by a quirky band" classification and replaces it with something deeper and more intriguing.

They tell a few stories about recently seeing Flashback Heart Attack (80's New Wave Tribute band) and the amount of joy the band delivered to their fans. Discussion points include the type of Tribute bands, the history and origins, why you should see Tribute Bands, the void these bands are now filling for the live music scene since there are very few touring acts currently on the road. They finish off the episode by talking about some of the great names of many of the Southern California Tribute bands inclduing Iron Maidens, Noise Polution, ACDShe, Use Your Illusion, Memory Lane, The Curse, Hollywood U2, Petty Breakers, Pretzel Logic, BoStyx, Sweet and Tender Hooligans, Strangelove, Which One's Pink, Atomic Punks and more. 30 minutes you will never get back!. If you had to come up with a word to define Michael Omartian, it would have to be that he's a "Renaissance Man" (okay... that's two words, but you get the idea). He's a man with many talents and areas of knowledge In this episode, we chat with Michael about how he came to work on such projects as Steely Dan's "Aja", "Katy Lied", and Pretzel Logic", and wound up being the Grammy Award-winning producer on Christopher Cross' debut album. In 1974, Don & Walt ensconced to The Village Recorder in West Los Angeles to produce a series of taut ‘n’ tight vignettes in their, now trademarked, style. The original quintet remain, just. Their time as ‘Steely Dan as a band’ is coming to an end. A raft of hot session players including Jeff Pocaro, Chuck Rainey and Jim Gordon flesh out incredibly accelerating, sophisticated songwriting. Come and find out what a Squonk is! Enjoying the show? This week we're digging up an old episode that we recorded over 2 years ago that we never ended up posting. We tackle our favorite Steely Dan album Pretzel Logic, from 1974. This was the band's final release as a proper five-piece before Walter Becker and Donald Fagen posted up shop in the studio, recording all future albums with a constantly revolving cast of studio musicians. Pretzel Logic varies widely in style from track to track, and showcases what each of the five members brought to the table, and what made Steely Dan such a powerhouse in their genre-bending jazz rock stylings. To this day, the song "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" from Pretzel is the band's most successful single, over 40 years later.Track Listing: Night By Night Through With Buzz With A Gun Charlie Freak Marvin Gaye - One More Heartache

Garry Messick comes in wth a killer classic by the divisive, polarizing duo of the late Walter Becker and the curmudgeonly Donald Fagen – AKA Steely Dan. Love them or hate them, you Can't Buy A Thrill better than listening to us rubes chew the fatback over this slab of alternately snarky and touching vignettes. Sometimes people are so desperate to be right about something that even in the face of undeniable data they will distort the facts in order to create an alternate reality that supports their viewpoint and then adopt that distortion as truth. One extreme example of this is the hundreds and perhaps thousands of people who persist in claiming the earth is a flat disk not a sphere despite the overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary. The pretzel logic required to support this is just absurd. And this is the kind of thing the closing section of John 7 describes. In verses 47-53, having just been confronted by members of their own police force with the power of Jesus' words, the religious leaders doubled down on their position that he was a fraud, a threat, and worthy of death. They ridiculed the police officers. Then, they expressed their contempt for the faith of the common people. And next, they belittled one of their own members for suggesting they should follow legal procedures before condemning a man to death without a trial. Then, they just went off the rails. Determined to hold their position at all costs, they made a statement that was both false and illogical. They said that no prophet had ever come from Galilee. Of course, they were ignoring the fact that the prophets Jonah and Nahum were both from Galilee. And according to many scholars, Malachi was as well. But even if all this had somehow just slipped their minds, their implication that no prophet could come from Galilee because none had, was just preposterous. This kind of delusional thinking is symptomatic of people who have become thoroughly invested in maintaining a false claim. What does this have to do with you and me? It's easy to point fingers at Pharisees and flat-earthers, but I think we need to confront our own tendency to dig our heels in to protect a position or belief we want to be true. There's always a temptation to put words in God's mouth to authorize our desires and then barricade ourselves behind phrases like, “God told me” or “God said” so we can ignore the conviction of the Holy Spirit or the loving correction of friends. And this was true of a dark period in my own life. I read 2 Corinthians 5:7 which says, “...We walk by faith, not by sight,” and decided this verse gave me the permission to ignore the negative balance I saw in my checkbook register. I also misappropriated Philippians 4:19 which says, “...God shall supply all your need,” and used it to justify continuing to write bad checks all over town. I bet you can imagine how that turned out. Sadly, it wasn't until I experienced much unnecessary hardship and heartache that I finally stopped attempting to defend the indefensible and admitted to myself and before God my sinful presumption. I so desperately wanted to believe God would support my lazy and irresponsible behavior that I twisted his words to suit my desire. Oh man! I wish I had that part of my life to relive. But my point is we all need to be careful of the spiritual blindness that can overtake us when we choose to fight for what we want instead of stand on what's true. And if that last statement illuminates something going on in your own life, bring it to Jesus in repentance and let him straighten out the pretzel…right now!

Playlist del programa: Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Any Major Dude Will Tell You, Aja, Steely Dan; Plateado sobre plateado, Charly García.
After the 3rd album, Pretzel Logic, Steely Dan stopped doing live shows. Fagan and Becker were always impressed with the Beatles work, so they took another cue from them and became a studio band. The record company was furious… Until they saw the sales figures. The audience didn’t care. They just were hooked on the Steely Dan Sound.

They are, for me, the All Time Greatest Artists ( with the Beatles and Bob... ). It is impossible to describe the Steely Dan's Style... It sounds very californian but with a New Yorker touch'.... These 3 albums sounds very 70' with very good quality of recording. Welcome in the 70's wild side music... The Pre-Dan Era Donald Fagen is born in Passaic, New Jersey on January 10, 1948. Walter Becker is born in New York City on February 20, 1950. They both grew up as disaffected suburban youths, going to school in the daytime and listening to the music of their idols Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington and John Coltrane at night. They both feel an affinity with the "Jazz Life." Donald Fagen meets Walter Becker at Bard College in Annandale-On Hudson, New York in 1967. Fagen, a piano player, hears someone playing blues guitar in a student lounge and decides he must introduce himself. He discovers Becker playing a red Epiphone guitar and finds that they share the same interests in music and ironic senses of humor. A partnership is born. They form several college bands including "The Leather Canary" (which fellow Bard student Chevy Chase sat in with a couple of times) and "The Don Fagen Trio." Fagen and Becker also start to write songs together. Fagen graduates Bard in 1969 with an English degree. Becker also leaves Annandale. The two of them move to Brooklyn, New York and decide to peddle their songs at the famous Brill Building in Manhattan. They don't meet with much success, but they make an important early connection with Kenny Vance of Jay and the Americans. Vance helps them record some demos of their early material and gets them some odd jobs including doing the soundtrack for the low-budget Richard Pryor film "You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It." Vance also gets Becker and Fagen gigs as back-up musicians on Jay and the Americans' 1970-71 tour. Jay Black disaffectionately labels Donald and Walter as "Starkweather and Manson." Fagen and Becker also meet another aspiring producer, Gary Katz, in New York. Shortly afterwards, Katz gets a job as staff producer at ABC Records in Los Angeles and also secures two staff songwriter positions for Fagen and Becker. With the hopes of making it big as songwriters, Donald and Walter move to L.A. in November 1971. The Early Steely Dan Era After realizing that the songs they were writing were too sophisticated for the other artists on the ABC roster (Three Dog Night, Dusty Springfield), Donald and Walter secretly begin to put together their own band with Gary Katz as their producer. They enlist Denny Dias as a guitarist, whom Becker and Fagen had met earlier in New York through an advertisement Dias placed in "The Village Voice" newspaper, reading "Looking for keyboardist and bassist. Must have jazz chops!" Dias flies out to the west coast to help the boys put together the band. "Can't Buy A Thrill" With Fagen on keyboards and vocals and Becker on bass, they decide to sign up guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and drummer Jim Hodder. With the core band recruited, Donald and Walter need a name for their group. Since both of them were avid readers of 1950's "Beat" literature, they decided to name the band "Steely Dan" after a dildo in William Burroughs' "Naked Lunch." The band begins rehearsing after work in a cramped, abandoned office in the ABC building and begins recording with Roger (The Immortal) Nichols, a former nuclear engineer, as their recording engineer, a relationship that continues to this day. Since Fagen was uncomfortable as the lead singer, they also decided to sign up vocalist David Palmer as the front man. Since Palmer's vocal style didn't convey the attitude that Becker and Fagen wanted for most of the songs, and they also needed to finish the album, Donald reluctantly sang lead vocals on all but three songs on their debut album, which they named "Can't Buy A Thrill." An interesting portent of things to come, however, is the credited use of outside studio musicians such as Elliot Randall and Jerome Richardson on several solos. The album is released in October 1972 without much fanfare, but surprises everyone by spawning a runaway hit "Do It Again" which reaches #6 on the charts. ABC pressures the band to do a quick tour and Becker and Fagen reluctantly acquiesce. A second hit "Reelin' In The Years" emerges and reaches #11 on the charts. "Can't Buy A Thrill" becomes a gold record and peaks at #17 on the charts. As the band begins to record their next album, Fagen takes over on all lead vocals and David Palmer leaves the group. "Countdown to Ecstasy" Following the surprising commercial success of "Can't Buy a Thrill", Steely Dan come under tremendous pressure from ABC Records to continue touring to promote the album, while at the same time recording a new one. Consequently, the songs for their second album are hurriedly recorded in between tour stops during 1973. Fagen and Becker later said this gave the recorded songs a live kind of feel, since they were in the studio with basically their touring band. The songs that become the "Countdown to Ecstasy" album, released in July 1973, thus are more stretched-out, as they are in the live settings of the time. "Showbiz Kids" is the first single to be released, and despite Rick Derringer's amazing slide guitar work, it only reaches #61 on the charts. It was speculated later that the expletive used in the song did not popularize it with radio program directors. "My Old School", an homage to their days at Bard, also does not fare well as a single and peaks at #63. Despite the lack of a hit single, "Countdown" receives excellent reviews and spawns such radio favorites as "Bodhisattva" and "My Old School", with the latter becoming a classic encore sing-along for their live shows in the 90's. "Pretzel Logic" Under ABC's pressure to produce more hit singles, Fagen and Becker write some shorter songs for their next album "Pretzel Logic." This album is released in March, 1974 and spawns their biggest hit, "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" which reaches #3 in March 1974. Becker and Fagen are expanding on their practice of bringing in other studio musicians as they increasingly find the core band unable to achieve the sound they want on all of their songs. One of the session men is Jeff Porcaro and a long and fruitful relationship with Fagen and Becker begins. A second tour is arranged including Porcaro as second drummer, a new Katz discovery Michael McDonald on back-up vocals and keyboards, and another vocalist Royce Jones (Ambrosia). While this band was musically superior to the one on the first tour, the rigors of tour travel and opening for heavy metal bands is not to Fagen and Becker's liking. After a July 4, 1974 show at the Santa Monica Civic Center in California, they swear off touring for the immediate future and decide to focus on writing and recording. This prompts Baxter, who loves the road life, to leave and join the Doobie Brothers. Jim Hodder also quits as "Pretzel Logic" goes gold and reaches #8 on the charts. > From Wikipedia
