EPISODE 40: Superboy and the Legion of Superheroes vs Mordru! The Last Sons do Super Friend Robert Reineke's request of Adventure Comics 369 & 370! Its Connor-El & Rey-Zods first proper go of the Legion of Superheroes! A grand tale of facing down a terrifying foe! You don't want to miss it! Plus we cover the new Superman releases, possibly for the last time in a while! SYNOPSIS: (courtesy of Rey-Zod) Adventure Comics #369-#370   #369 - Part 1, MORDRU THE MERCILESS The Legionnaire’s most powerful enemy, Mordru has escaped his confines and is in pursuit of the young heroes. Super Boy, Mon El, Duo Damsel and Shadow Lass make a narrow escape into the 20th century and find themselves in Smallville. Mon El recounts to Shadow Lass the origin of Mordru and the awesome power he wields. The Legion were able to trick him and eventually incapacitate him but a small mistake leads to Mordru’s resuscitation and his eventual pursuit of his would-be captors. In Smallville, the quartet bunker down at various residences , all under guise - Super Boy as Clark Kent and Mon El as Bob Cobb his cousin stay with the Kents ; Duo Damsel as Marie Elkins (passes herself off as a distant cousin to Chief Parker;  and last but not least a heavily make-upped Shadow Lass as Betsy Norcross sneaks in with the Langs as an exchange student. Mordru’s influence is soon felt in the town in the visage of a great shadow and the heroes do well to shield themselves, lest they be discovered by the evil sorcerer. Mordru affects the minds of the other citizens and turns them into his eyes and ears - any sign of the Legionnaires and the citizens will alert Mordru. In another effort, Mordru conjures up illusions in the hope that the heroes will expose themselves. Mon-El however maintains a cool head and reassures the others. It’s not long before the illusions disappear and Mordru’s plan is foiled again.   #369 - Part 2, MORDRU AND THE MOB With the heroes hiding, the presence of Super Boy is sorely missed and soon crime escalates. The mob moves in and ‘King’ Carter sets up his kingdom in Smallville, demanding tributes and anything else he wishes. Although the Legionnaires dare not expose themselves, they convince the town to stand up to the mob, and with a little subtle help from the Legionnaires the mob’s rule is soon defeated. A small meeting by the Legionnaire is spied upon by Lana, and being the eyes and ears of Mordru, she exposes them to the evil villain. Mordru suddenly appears in front of the Legion of Super Heroes to wreak his revenge!   #370 - Part 1, THE DEVIL’S JURY The Legionnaires escape Mordru by burrowing down and escaping his magical wrath. They manage to make it to Clark’s basement and there, along with his parents, they wipe their minds to ensure Mordru can’t locate them with their thoughts. If they do not know they are the Legion of Super Heroes, then neither does Mordru! Mordru summons an army from his time and reality, and Mordru literally isolates Smallville by casting it up into orbit - trapping everyone in the town. The army spread out intent on finding the heroes, but to no avail. Pete Ross clues in to the fact that Clark has forgotten about his own identity, and so he and Lana capture Clark to make him remember. Clark soon does, and he quickly finds the other Legionnaires and restores their memory too. With Pete Ross (Honorary Legionnaire) and Lana Insect Queen (Reserve Legionnaire), the six are ready to do battle with Mordru and defeat him once and for all…!   #370 - Part 2, THE CONDEMNED CRUSADERS Their cunning plan involves duping the army with a couple of foils in Pete Ross as SuperBoy and one of Duo Damsels as Shadow Lass. As they are all eventually captured and brought to Mordru’s Lair, Super Boy and Shadow Lass effect their surprise attack. It momentarily stuns Mordru, but he is too powerful and eventually he defeats them all.  Mordru brings them all on trial in front of a Devil’s Jury and with Wraithor at the helm of the prosecution and Pete Ross as the Defence, the heroes are found guilty and are sentenced to Eternal Oblivion in a deadly lead lined, Krypton coated vault. It proves a fake as Wraithor reveals to be a sympathiser to the heroes and leads them to freedom. Mordru catches on and disposes of the Wraithor in a fatal blast. He incapacitates the heroes once again but makes the mistake of summoning too much power to kill them. The might of his power is too much for the cavern to bear and it collapses, burying Mordru and entombing him once more. The heroes find themselves free (ironically shielded from the cavern collapse by the force field Mordru cast on them to trap them) and return to the 30th century. It’s revealed their colleagues, Invisible Kid, Dream Girl and Ultra Kidwere not killed by Mordru, but had constructed an illusion to make it seem that they were, with a little help from the White Witch and Princess Projectra. There they are alerted by the security system of an intruder and Superboy is shocked to find it is his old tormentor Dev-Em. Capturing Dev-Em, Superboy explains how Dev-Em was a juvenile delinquent on Krypton who was sentenced to suspended animation, survived Krypton's destruction and was revived on 20th Century Earth. However, it is revealed that Dev-Em has turned over a new leaf in the 30th Century and is a member of the Inter-Stellar Counter-Intelligence Corps. However, when reporting back into the I.C.C., Dev-Em has his mission to stop interplanetary criminal Molock to Superboy. Adventure Comics #319 The Legion's Suicide Squad April 1964 w: Edmond Hamilton a: John Forte When the isolationist planet Throon builds a giant tower with a ray that incapacitates passing ships, the Legion of Super-Heroes is sent to try and stop them. The first squad which consists Saturn Girl, Bouncing Boy, Superboy, Lightning Lad, Chameleon Boy, Brainiac 5 and Invisible Kid are dispatched and find themselves easily defeated by devices that are tailor made to deal with their individual threats. When the remaining members of the Legion all try in their own ways to get past the tower on Throon, they all meet defeat in different ways until all of the members of the Legion have been defeated. Having watched the entire fiasco on their viewing monitor, the Legion of Substitute Heroes goes in for the rescue. While the others keep the defenses of the tower busy, Night Girl uses her strength to burrow through the ground into the main control room of the tower. There she finds that the whole operation is controlled by two crazy old men. Easily defeating them and smashing their machine, Night Girl and the rest of the Substitutes free their Legion counterparts and return to Earth. There a special parade is put on in honor of the Legion of Substitute Heroes, finally giving them the recognition they deserve. - via DC Wikia Adventure Comics #320 The Revenge of the Knave From Krypton! May 1964 w: Edmond Hamilton a: John Forte & George Papp After finishing his homework, Superboy travels to the 30th Century for his regular visit with the Legion of Super-Heroes. Superboy then recounts about how Dev-Em managed to trap Superboy in the Phantom Zone and pose as him to cause chaos around Earth. After returning from the Phantom Zone, Superboy was unable to stop Dev-Em who escaped into the distant future. Superboy would finish his story by explaining that the only way he was able to clear his name was with the help of his friend Chief Parker who told everyone Red Kryptonite was the "reason" for Superboy's rampage. Welcome to a very special episode of Dread Media. The Unseen, a locally produced sci-fi / body horror film, is the toast of Fantasia Film Festival, and this episode is dedicated entirely to it. First up, writer / director Geoff Redknap talks all about the triumphs and troubles while filming the movie as well as his history in make-up effects stemming back 20 years. Then, an interview with the art director on the film: Darryll Doucette. Yeah, that's right. That Darryll Doucette. Of course, you gotta know what the stink is, so Duane and Desmond review the film, and Rich sticks to the theme of invisibility with his review of the best of the original Universal Invisible Man sequels: Invisible Agent. Of course, there's music: "Unseen Tormentor" by Early Man, "I'm Invisible Man" by The Meteors, "Invisible Kid" by Metallica, "Invisible Wounds (The Sulutre Mix)" by Fear Factory, "Invisible Empire" by Iron Mask, and "Les Invisible" by Blue Oyster Cult. Happy Friday, fair listeners, and welcome back to Just One of the Guys, a little show that talks about the Green Lantern books that came out between 1990 and 2004. This week is a special treat, because there's only one issue to cover, so less of me to listen to...SCORE!!! But that doesn't mean that the issue, number 98, is to be taken lightly. In fact Kyle Rayner might be up against his greatest foe (which might not be so surprising given his Rogues Gallery to date), an evil Green Lantern Corps! Add to that, he's been flung into the distant future, where all records of him being a Green Lantern are nonexistant. So no legacy, no way to get back to his own time, and an evil bunch of Lanterns led by Tomar Schwarzenegger. Luckily, the Legion of Superheroes is here to help Kyle out. Unluckily, one of the members is a female descendant of Barry Allen who has quite a crush on Kyle. It's a far flung fantasy featuring my favorite...comic book character (I'll never be as good as ol' Stan "The Man"), and to make sure I can tell my Sparks from my Leviathan, I've recruited J. David Weter (host of Dave's Daredevil Podcast and The Starman Observatory) to fill me in on all things Legion. So unless you are looking for some inappropriate touching by Ultra Boy, I suggest you grab your mp3 player of choice, download the show, and get to listening!
