On Mother's Day, it goes without saying that we make sure to honor our mother, the mother of our children, perhaps a mother-in-law, a stepmother, and even our grandmothers. But there's someone else we should acknowledge today: Anna Jarvis. She is the woman who created Mother's Day. Anna's mother was a community organizer who worked with women throughout her life. She encouraged them to be active in their community, working to ensure that children lived happy and healthy lives. Anna, inspired by her mother's work, created an event to honor the service our mothers provide. The rest is history, but it has a unique twist... Amy Stewart, in her book Flower Confidential, says that florists practically invented Mother's Day. It was actually invented in 1908 by a woman named Anna Jarvis who wanted the celebration to be on the second Sunday in May because it was the anniversary of the death of her own mother. “Crowd it and push it,” she urged florists, noting that May was a month when flowers are plentiful and therefore cheaper. Florists jumped on board, and Jarvis's idea worked as people saw it as a chance to honor their mothers, as well as daughters, wives, grandmothers, and friends who were mothers. Jarvis, however, became upset with the floral industry because she wanted white carnations to be the exclusive flower of Mother's Day. This was because the holiday actually began as a day when children (both boys and girls) would honor their mothers by wearing a white carnation in their buttonhole. Florists, understandably, were in favor of using a wider variety of flowers, partly because their suppliers couldn't supply sufficient quantities of white carnations.Mother's Day is now a truly floral holiday, and flowers can even be wired world-wide.

Mother's Day. When Anna Jarvis founded the holiday, she envisioned it as a day for everyone to honor and thank their mothers. She worked tirelessly to promote the holiday. She hoped it would be celebrated around the globe. But after a few years, Anna noticed that Mother's Day was becoming… commercialized. Anna was incensed. She went to war against florists, greeting card makers and anyone else who might make a profit on Mother's Day. Her anger even spilled over onto charities that used the holiday to help fundraise for mothers in need. By the end of her life, Anna Jarvis figured that if she could bring Mother's Day into this world, she could also be the one to end it. Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! For this episode, Kristin pulled from: “The mother of mother's day,” by Daniel Mark Epstein for The Philadelphia Inquirer “The founder of mother's day mostly cared about her own mother,” by Nina Martin for Mother Jones “Anna Jarvis: The woman who regretted creating mother's day,” by Vibeke Venema for the BBC “Battling the Mother's Day monster,” The Ottawa Citizen “Why Mother's Day founder Anna Jarvis later fought to have the holiday abolished,” by Jonathan Mulinix for Mental Floss “How the founder of Mother's Day died alone, childless and penniless in an insane asylum,” by Laura T. In this episode of Discover Daily, we explore a diverse range of topics spanning technology, trade, security, artificial intelligence, and cultural traditions. We begin with a look at the upcoming Google I/O 2024 event, where advancements in AI, Android 15, and potential hardware updates are expected to take center stage. The discussion then shifts to the U.S. government's plan to increase tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles from 25% to 100%, a move that could significantly impact the affordability and availability of these vehicles in the American market.Next, we examine the growing trend of schools using AI technology to detect firearms on their premises, as a proactive measure to enhance safety and security. Companies like ZeroEyes and Iterate AI are at the forefront of this movement, offering AI systems that integrate with existing camera networks to identify potential threats in real-time. We also delve into the intriguing concept of Moravec's Paradox, which highlights the counterintuitive nature of AI development, where tasks that are simple for humans are often extremely difficult for machines, and vice versa. Finally, we explore the origins of Mother's Day in the United States, tracing its roots back to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, who sought to honor her mother's legacy as a social activist. The first official Mother's Day took place on May 10, 1908, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson established it as a national holiday. Despite its heartfelt beginnings, the commercialization of the holiday later became a point of concern for Anna Jarvis, who felt it had strayed from her original vision of personal and heartfelt expressions of love.|From Perplexity's Discover feed:Google I/O 2024 expectations: https://www.perplexity.ai/search/Google-IO-2024-1c_t5b2LSk6C5d_6JVHtkQUS puts 100% tax on Chinese EVs: https://www.perplexity.ai/search/US-puts-100-76DBEniCRcK023QdmjlbowSchools use AI to spot guns: https://www.perplexity.ai/search/Schools-use-AI-oW8vYxR_SyiwG5ycppq7hgThe Moravec's paradox: https://www.perplexity.ai/search/The-Moravecs-paradox-km0PDONzTgeY8h9.5b3ctAThe origins of Mother's Day: https://www.perplexity.ai/search/The-origins-of-_Zsjzby4RpOCFHE_XEy2awPerplexity is the fastest and most powerful way to search the web. The second Sunday in May is set aside as a day to honor one of God's greatest gifts to humankind, Mothers. Mother's Day was first celebrated at a service in Philadelphia in 1907. The day was the idea of Anna Jarvis, a schoolteacher in Philadelphia. This is certainly not a religious holiday, but it is a day that draws our attention to one of God's greatest blessings. It is good that we remember the influence our mothers had as we were growing up. To those mothers who are raising young children, you need to be aware of the wonderful blessing and awesome responsibility the Lord has given you. That small life is a being for eternity, and you will help to form the ideas and values that will see them through this life and into the next. Hopefully, we honor our mothers every day. Happy Mother's Day and thank God for Mothers!

In this podcast about celebrating moms, I re-read a letter I wrote to my dear mother in 2019, some years ago before she graduated to her heavenly home some months later. As I read it again, it re-affirms the value of writing down our thoughts and sentiments to those we truly care about, whether a mother, father or even a dear friend or acquaintance. We truly can't buy back the years! For an article focused on celebrating moms, I could cover the history of Mother's Day with Anna Jarvis in 1908 with it becoming an official U.S. holiday in 1914, but that information is readily available. So, I decided to focus on the practical aspects and emotion of the day and what it has meant to me as a mom, and now a mother-in-law and grandmother. I also wanted to encourage giving gifts of time or gifts of sentiments to those who have played a mother figure in our lives as they will far outlast most physical gifts. I encourage you to write your own missive to someone you care about. I've provided my letter as a free download and you are welcome to glean any ideas you may feel appropriate. After reading the letter I've included some ideas for special gifts that will hopefully spark your imagination. Someday I will find my Prince, but my Daddy will always be my King.” So true, so cute, and so very innocent. Isn't? I found this beautiful quote while exploring the greeting cards section in my local store. Father's Day in the United States is the third Sunday of June. It celebrates the contribution fathers and father figures make to their children's lives. Today, at Mother's Gurukul podcast, let's celebrate Father's Day!! I was curious to know more about Father's Day, and I found something interesting. ‘A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was an influential figure in the establishment of Father's Day. She is also recognized as the mother of Father's Day. Her father was a civil war veteran who raised six children by himself after the death of their mother. This was uncommon at that time, as many widowers placed their children in the care of others or quickly married again. Sonora was inspired by the work of Anna Jarvis, who had pushed forMother's Day celebrations. Sonora felt that her father deserved recognition for what he had done. The first time Father's Day was held in June was in 1910. President Nixon officially recognized Father's Day as a holiday in 1972.' I wanted to approach the subject of Mother's Day history not only as a matter of interest, but as a reminder for our listeners to appreciate their mom or even a friend's mom. I appreciate the women who have spent a great amount of energy and time raising families, many times while balancing a career and other responsibilities. As I think about Mother's Day, I am remembering my own mother who made all of my sister's and my clothes until she taught us to sew on our own. What I didn't realize at the time was that she probably didn't even grow up with a sewing machine and learned how to sew when it became necessary as there was very little money. My mother is gone now, but her example as well as many others have influenced my life and my role as a mom. Listen & Follow Podcast here: https://goalsforyourlife.com/womenathalftimepodcast The original Mothers' Day Proclamation was given by Julia Ward Howe in 1870. It was an appeal to unite for peace to womanhood throughout the word. In 1872 Julia asked for the celebration of a “Mother's Day for Peace” on June 2 of every year but was unsuccessful. Then, the modern Mother's Day was first celebrated in the United States in 1908 by Anna Jarvis, who wanted to honor her mother whom she lost in 1905. She worked tirelessly to promote the holiday and President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation making it a national holiday in 1914. Today, the holiday is celebrated in many countries around the world. The United States celebrates on the 2nd Sunday in May with cards, gifts and special meals. America has since commercialized the holiday causing great confusion for many who are trying to celebrate the special mom in their life.To avoid confusion, disappointment, and comparison, simply ASK the mother in your life - or your kids' lives and work to honor her in that unique way that is meaningful to her. Want more on active listening? Anna Jarvis (1864-1948) was the founder of Mother's Day... but the way we celebrate today is very different from what she had in mind. While motherhood can take many forms, to mother is to usher forth new generations through care, work and imagination. For the entire month of December, we're celebrating mothers — including those who raised children who went on to lead the civil rights movement and school desegregation efforts, such as Alberta King and Louise Little, as well as mothers of movements like Lorena Borjas who started the Latinx trans movement. All of the women featured this month were dedicated to the survival of children in their work and to imagining better futures for the next generation.History classes can get a bad rap, and sometimes for good reason. When we were students, we couldn't help wondering... where were all the ladies at? Why were so many incredible stories missing from the typical curriculum? Enter, Womanica. In this episode it's finally here Mother's Day 2022 today's May 8th it's a Sunday and we're so happy that she joined us. Mother's Day, is celebrated as a holiday in honor of mothers in countries throughout the world. In its modern form the holiday originated in the United States, where it is observed on the second Sunday in May. Many other countries also celebrate the holiday on this date, while some mark the observance at other times of the year. Mothers are special because without them none of us would be here! Throughout history there is historical documentation in one form or another of celebrating moms. In fact there are some very unique forms of this celebration that can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the Great Mother of the Gods Rhea also called Cybele, of the ancient Oriental and Greco-Roman deity, known by a variety of local names; the name Cybele or Cybebe predominates in Greek and Roman literature from about the 5th century BC onward. Her full official Roman name was Mater Deum Magna Idaea (Great Idaean Mother of the Gods). The clearest modern precedent for Mother's Day is the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.” Once a major tradition in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, this celebration fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent and was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return to their “mother church”—the main church in the vicinity of their home—for a special service. . During the Middle Ages the custom developed of allowing those who had moved away to visit their home parishes and their mothers on Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent. This became Mothering Sunday in Britain, where it continued into modern times, although it has largely been replaced by Mother's Day. Mother's Day is celebrated on Sunday, May 8, 2022. The history channel May 8,2022 https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/mothers-day The American embodiment of Mother's Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 I just a deeply personal day for and visiting with your mother which became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Unfortunately with the commercialization by florist retailers in card companies in other industries that work to promote the holiday, Jarvis would later condemn the holiday Jarvis felt that the day that she created to appreciate your mother and maybe help her around the house with other things or sit and talk and have a cup of tea, was ruined due to that commercialization and spent the later part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar. While dates and celebrations vary, Mother's Day traditionally is celebrated in the United states in North America, South America, United Kingdom, Thailand, Mexico, Spain, Nepal, Ethiopia and many more. https://beforeyougopodcast.com This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podcorn - https://podcorn.com/privacy

The first Mother's Day was celebrated in two places - a church in Grafton, West Virginia, and the Wanamaker Auditorium in Philadelphia. Its founder, Anna Jarvis, spent much of her life living here and died at the Marshall Square Sanitarium in West Chester. But it wasn't a peaceful life - when Mother's Day started getting commercialized, she fought forcefully against it, losing her money and health in the battle. Jennifer Green, Director of Education at the Chester County History Center and author of Dark History of Penn's Woods: Murder, Madness, and Misadventure in Southeastern Pennsylvania, shares Anna Jarvis's story as we prepare for this year's Mother's Day.

Mother's Day is around the corner…. But to some mothers, this day might SUCK.Seriously, even with all the good intentions that surround this day, do we ever pause to think about what mothers truly want on this day?But before that, let's take a step back and trace where it all began and what it's all about.Mother's Day was conceived by Anna Jarvis in the 1900s to honor mothers for the sacrifices they make for their children. In this episode, Eddie and I give you 5 tips on how to celebrate Mother's Day in a way that honors and acknowledges the important role that mothers play.Pro Tip: Don't ask what she wants; figure out yourself and plan something for once! For many mothers, it winds up being just like any other day, where they do all the work and the planning, even on a day meant to celebrate them.Tune in and share this episode with somebody who should hear itKey Takeaways - Eddie's birthday coming up (01:15)- What in the world (02:54)- Stand up for yourself (07:01)- Why Mother's Day might suck (06:01)- How Mother's Day started and what it means (17:57)- Celebrating Mother's Day as a blended family (20:36)- The pressure of celebrating the perfect Mother's Day (24:28)- What mothers want for this day (25:31)Additional Resources:The Pusher SocietyJanelle's websiteJoin the Cake Cents FB GroupJoin the Push Podcast FB GroupThe Push Podcast's official websiteCake Mamas InstagramEddie's Instagram

Mother's Day and THAT Mom!

This week is Mothers's Day.  And since the podcast is Unschooling Mom2Mom, I thought it's important to talk about it a little. I actually have a collection of writings about Mother's Day: Anticipating Mother's Day Podcast/BlogpostMother's Day 2020 blogpostPinterest Board - Mother's Day Memes & SuchAND! I have some free printables for you - ways to help your kids connect with this Mother's Day concept without any mention of school!  Grab the Mother's Day PDF here:https://unschooling-mom2mom.ck.page/e76330687cThe post from Mother's Day 2020 has a lot of interesting links - all focusing a bit on the HYPE of Mother's Day.  Because, you know, Mother's Day didn't start out this way. The founder, Anna Jarvis, is probably rolling over in her grave because this is NOT what she had in mind. And, like all holidays, they can be triggering. We see these beautiful Instagram posts and then we look over and our kids have forgotten. Especially if you're a single mom and no one is helping your child plan ahead for this “Big Day.”  Or maybe we're reminded that our own mothers aren't here or weren't that great when they were. So if you need to scroll on past Mother's Day, do you! Seriously. It's not worth putting undue pressure on anyone. Because really, appreciation is an inside job. You do what you do because that's how you want to parent. It's how you want to mother. Not to get flowers or feedback from anyone else that you're doing a good job. YOU determine if you like the job you're doing. That's a lot of that People Pleasing that's been conditioned into us. Also it's that school-induced idea about “showing your work,” or it-doesn't-count-unless-it's-externally-praised.  Isn't it time to let THAT go??I also wanted to talk a little about being THAT mom. You know the one. The one who gets the side eye from friends and relatives. The one who marches to her own beat. And if you're unschooling, partnering with your kids as you're navigating this Parenting Thing, odds are, you're the one they're talking about.I'll share some specifics about raising my own 3 unschoolers on the podcast with more at the blogpost. Are you THAT mom too? Happy Mother's Day! Pastor brings us a bible study on God's Love Through Mothers. The modern holiday of Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1907, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. For those called to Motherhood and youth mentorship, may God bless you and keep you this Mother's Day and always. Thank you for your role in raising up the next generation of Christians, and for modeling what it means to fix our eyes on Jesus.

May 1988 was a big one for pop culture: the airing of the St. Elsewhere series finale meant the dawning of the Tommy Westphall Universe! After discussing that, plus some other big moments in contemporaneous TV finales, we take a stroll through What Now. Molly Ringwald and Andrew McCarthy, stretching as actors! Patrick Swayze, opening a restaurant in New York! Karen, breaking a Tiffany album in half! And Pam delves into the dark history of Anna Jarvis, creator of Mother's Day! Finally, the issue folds One To Watch into its one and only pop culture feature, having Christina interview FOUR Ones To Watch. Sure, we all know who Alex Winter is, but did Paul Hipp, Billy McNamara, and Alan Boyce amount to anything? Find out with our latest episode!QUICK LINKS
