First came three historical fiction books, then she moved into her favorite genre: crime-mystery. 7 DAYS, A Dee Rommel Mystery, is the fourth book in the crime/mystery series that has made Kirkus' Top 5 mysteries from Indie Publishers List, has been awarded a Silver Falchion and award nominations from Foreword Review, the Clue Award, Maine Literary Award and more. In this side chat minisode, we do a look at George Lucas' attempt at blending in his famous franchise with historical recreations and family friendly antics: THE YOUNG INDIANA JONES CHRONICLES. How many iconic guests stars appeared on this early '90s adventure? What acclaim and detractors did it have? How does it truly hold up now? Content Warning - this episode contains some mild adult language. A few years ago Bryan had the opportunity to interview Star Wars producer Rick McCallum in a wide-ranging discussion about his work at Lucasfilm, from the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, and all points in between. There was a lot of focus spent on The Phantom Menace, making this a perfect interview to pull from the archive to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Phantom Menace.
In this episode of the Retroist Podcast, I am going to take a look at the first two decades of video games featuring Indiana Jones. This started with me just going to talk about a couple of games, but then morphed into a 12 game extravaganza (maybe 13). Here are the games I discuss: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1982) Indiana Jones in the Lost Kingdom (1984) Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1985) Indiana Jones in Revenge of the Ancients (1987) Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1988) Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure (1989) Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Action Game (1989) Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1991) Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (1992) The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (1993) Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures (1994) Indiana Jones and His Desktop Adventures (1996) We kick things off by reminiscing about my childhood and the challenges of playing these beloved games. Back then, playing your favorite titles wasn't always easy, but with enough determination, anything was possible. From there, we move on to the games themselves. This episode is a bit different, as I focus more on my personal experiences with these games rather than just the gameplay details. It's a mix of memories and opinion that I hope will bring a smile to your face and perhaps a bit of nostalgia. Join me as I recount the highs and lows of playing these Indiana Jones games, sharing what made each one unique and memorable. I hope you find this journey through Indiana Jones gaming history as enjoyable as I did. If you have an opinion about one of these games, let me know in the comments or over on Discord.
In an episode of the Retroist Podcast, we are looking at the "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles," a TV series that charts the early adventures of the iconic character Indiana Jones. This series fleshes out the formative years of the young Indy as he travels the globe and, like Forrest Gump, he engages with historical figures and participates in key events that shaped the 20th century. Unlike the high-stakes treasure hunts typical of the Indiana Jones film saga, this series opts for a more educational and character-driven exploration of Indy's development into the archaeologist we know from the films. The fun thing about "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" is how it cleverly intertwines real historical contexts with the Indy's fictional world, offering us a blend of adventure and a history lesson in each episode. The series production stands out by its unique approach to storytelling, where each episode is a standalone story that that can also be combined with another episode to make a feature length film. That capability really highlights the craftsmanship of George Lucas. In this episode of the podcast, we will explore how "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" not only plays with the Indiana Jones narrative but also serves as a crucial component in understanding the complexities of Indy's character. Did we need all this info about Indy? Probably not, but for fans of the show, it was a great wait to give us more of the character when we couldn't get prime Harrison Ford Indy to make more movies. With all of its materials, it's weirdly overlooked. I hope by talking about it, I can get you to look at it again or the first time.
A singer/songwriter, JD Hinton has composed songs and music for Hollywood films including GLORIA, TICK-TOCK, and Mark Medoff's film CHILDREN ON THEIR BIRTHDAY, which features JD's original composition "I Have to Dream" sung by Celine Dion. A personal highlight was singing at the Vatican for the Pope. As heartfelt as the late, great Hank Williams, Hinton's music has been compared to everyone from Leonard Cohen to Peter Gabriel and Robbie Robertson. Before his music work began, JD was the midnight to dawn disc jockey on a highly rated R&B radio station that kept L.A. dancing the night away. Hinton began using improvisational skills he developed as a disc jockey to land acting roles in television and films. His name continually popped up starring on TV shows like “Dynasty”, “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles”, “Mork and Mindy”, and recently in the hit show “Jane the Virgin” for CBS. Look for him in “The Morning Show” with Reese Witherspoon for AppleTV. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2A0pYC3qPyA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7b5yVoTsVwk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQFL00yWgCI Learn more about your ad choices. She spoke better Arabic than Lawrence of Arabia, helped draw the borders of modern-day Iraq, and founded the National Museum arguing that historic relics should be kept in the country of origin. Yet Gertrude Bell is a relatively little-known British Imperialist. Perhaps as she was so ‘of her era', as opposed to the more self-questioning heroes we might focus on now. I talk about my journey over the last few weeks, trying to find out more and more about her. I start with the Encyclopedia Britannica, check the Guardian newspaper, and find most biographies really draw on a single source, ‘Queen of the Desert: The Extraordinary Life of Gertrude Bell' by Georgina Howell. I do check that, and a documentary that accompanied The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. There is also a 2015 movie starring Nicole Kidman, but honestly I found it hard to get into it, as many do.If you are interested in her archeological work, rather than her private life and public politics, it would be hard to do better than the hour-long Youtube video, ‘Lisa Cooper | Encounters with Ancient Splendors: Gertrude Bell'. This is a public lecture, which does show some of her remarkable photography. Meanwhile, BBC North East has shared videos about the influence her family had on her regions, Yorkshire and Cumbria. Throughout this episode, I do try and add in my own experience where I can, having worked in Saudi Arabia and then in Oman. I was able to visit some of the archeological sites out in the desert, and I can quite understand how this could draw someone in as a life-ling interest. I shall share more on that, if requested, so do get in touch.Message me anytime on Instagram, or e-mail: AlbionNeverDies@gmail.comCheck out my Red Bubble shopSubscribe to my newsletter for personal news, a look at 'behind the podcast', and a semi-regular chance of getting a postcard, notebook, or 'Alphabet of Britishness' mug from me (Chris just got one): https://youtube.us9.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=b3afdae99897eebbf8ca022c8&id=5165536616 Listen to The Compass of PowerAnd ask where the politicians are coming from.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show
What happens when you send Indiana Jones into the First World War? In this episode, we are joined by Thomas Riddle. Thomas runs the website indyintheclassroom.com (which aims to provide teachers with resources to integrate everyone's favourite archaeologist into the classroom) to discuss the 1990s TV series ‘The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles'. Along the way we discuss the show as an educational tool, the many historical figures that appear in the series, and the importance of learning foreign languages! MONSTER PARTY WHIPS IT GOOD! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, pay tribute to an iconic character whose adventures have spanned over 30 years. He's everyone's favorite whip-wielding archeologist, which kind of narrows it down. Cue exhilarating John Williams music as we present an episode that could only be titled... INDIANA JONES!!! From that first screening of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK back in 1981, we all were unexpectedly awed by the epic heroism of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. Sure, the following films and TV shows have been a mixed bag, but through better or worse, it's safe to say that Indy has always been a hero we've been rooting for. In this episode, we dissect the Indiana Jones phenomenon in detail. Is Raiders a truly perfect film? Is Temple of Doom too violent and just not Indy enough? Does Last Crusade have too many gags? Is Crystal Skull way too Shia LaBeoufy? Who was The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles actually intended for? Did Dial of Destiny redeem the series? What are the best Indiana Jones collectibles? And how do you explain to your in-laws why you have all those whips? After his superiors have all been killed in a terrible battle in Flanders, Indy now finds himself in charge of the Belgian 9th Infantry. Then later pairing with the French 14th Company in Somme. In a failed escape attempt after being captured, Indy is sent to a maximum security prison on the Danube at Dunstersadt where he meets a young Charles De Gaulle
In our first of three chapters, Indy competes with a mysterious contender to woo a young Italian beauty named Guiletta while taking advice from friend Ernest Hemingway. Then on the African plains in November of 1916, Indiana Jones and pal Remy get lost in their attempt to join their unit in Africa. As they trek back to Lake Victoria, Indy and Remy inadvertently join the 25th Royal Fusiliers, a unit of grumpy, aging men. Indy's knowledge of Trains and fluent German make him very useful as the unit battles The Phantom Train of Doom, in this feature length adventure. Finally in Ireland, 1916. Indiana Jones and Remy arrive back to Europe after their adventures in Mexico. Raising funds while waiting tables, Indy gets caught in another love affair around the time of the Easter Rising
Indiana Jones sows his wild oats juggling three girlfriend's while working on George White's Broadway show in 1920, New York. This episode features a young Anne Heche as well. Then in Vienna 1908, a very young Indiana Jones crosses paths with Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung and Alfred Adler all the while barely avoiding a major international incident due to his first childhood crush.
First we continue our story in Chicago where Indy's musical appreciation switches to the Blues, while the adventures heat up with Eliot Ness and Ernest Hemingway. We then travel tp Princeton, NJ where Indy is attempting to persuade his girlfriend's father to take his Hot Rod to the Junior Prom. While getting repairs, Indy stumbles into an adventure involving a stolen Thomas Edison invention. Finally we travel to Petrograd where Indy has befriended a group of young Bolshevik students. After taking Indy to hear a speech by Vladimir Lenin, the Bolshevik's attempt to prematurely start a revolution.
Young Indiana Jones is a spy in 1917 Barcelona, a neutral WW1 city. With a group of fellow spies Indy devises a scheme to create geopolitical love affair scandal in order to sway Spain to the allies. Pablo Picasso's art and Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets adds to this wacky mix between art, love and war. We travel to 1920's Chicago where a new found love for Jazz intertwines with a murder mystery and ruthless Gangsters like Al Capone
First we travel to Verdun in 1916 where Indy is acting as a courier, a dangerous liaison crossing enemy territory. Indy is frustrated by the cavalier nature in which some superiors send men to die against impossible odds. Then we jump to later in 1916 where Indy is now stationed in German East Africa. This is definitely one of our favorite episodes as the action is intense and the stakes are high. Indy is tasked with a perilous mission crossing the Congo after being promoted for his heroic efforts in a battle. However, his defiance of orders in that battle has put him at odds with his superior. All of this made more intense by Indy having to make one of the toughest decisions of his life
We continue our journey through the Congo as Indy and crew, near death have been intercepted and treated by German Albert Schweitzer. At first reluctant of being treated by a German, Indy becomes friends with Schweitzer and begins to see the hopelessness of the seemingly needless war he is fighting. In Austria, March of 1917. Indy, desperate to help end this terrible conflict of WW1 is tasked with helping two Austrian Princes across enemy lines with a message of peace that can help end the war.
We continue along in the Young Indy Chronicles with our first two 45 minute episodes which will make up the bulk of the series. We travel to East Africa in 1909 with Theodore Roosevelt as he's hunting a rare Oryx. Indy is conflicted with Teddy's ideals on conservation and also befriends another child from a local tribe. We then head to London in 1916 where Indy is looking for romance before shipping of to WW1 with the Belgian Army.
Years before the countless, big budget Star Wars shows streaming today on Disney+, LucasFilm's first foray into live action television debuted on ABC, only this didn't feature a Galaxy far, far away… Instead we were gifted a expansive, adventurous, high quality episodic series featuring the Adventures of a Young Indiana Jones. It's hard to understate the scope of this show. For network television in the early 90s, almost nothing compares to the movie quality adventures we were gifted over the course of two seasons. Somehow, this show has been mostly forgotten and is vastly under-celebrated. Not only was The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles a technical marvel, featuring early experimental technology that would later be used on the Star Wars Prequels, but Young Indy also featured very well written and compelling stories, great acting featuring the star himself Sean Patrick Flannery as Young Indy, as well as cameos by young actors, Catherine Zeta Jones, Elizabeth Hurley, Daniel Craig and even a cameo from Harrison Ford as the Indy we all grew to love during the original films and lastly episodes directed by notable directors such as Frank Darabont. Please join Spencer and Wesley as they revisit this forgotten relic in anticipation for the release of Indiana Jones and Dial of Destiny this June and our review of all the films this #IndianaJune

On the December 7, 2022 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editorial director Peter Sciretta is joined by no one to answer some Indiana Jones emails in the Mailbag and discuss the latest film and TV news, which all circles around Avatar: The Way of Water. Opening Banter: We are transferring our podcast over to a new host so if there is any wonkiness, we apologize in advance! In The Mailbag: Gert from The Netherlands writes in “When it comes to the future of the Indiana Jones franchise, deep faking Harrison Ford for a feature length movie could be done - but shouldn't be done. That being said I doubt Ford would ‘sell' his likeness to be used for all of eternity ;) I always thought a series following a young group of archeological students (taught by Jones) on many adventures - could work. Throw in a few ‘legacy' characters like Mutt or Short Round to tie everything together. The show would simply be called: RAIDERS. It borrows from the original title of the first film and should be recognizable enough using the right font.” Robert V writes in “On Friday's podcast you mentioned that you think that Indiana Jones might die in the new movie. Rest assured he will not die. On the show ‘The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles' there was a scene that featured an Indiana Jones in his 90s. Unless Disney had decided that the show isn't canon anymore, it should still be true.” In The News: Avatar: The Way Of Water Early Buzz: James Cameron Does It Again In Visually Stunning And Emotional Return To PandoraAre you surprised? Doctor Who Am I is described by IMDb as a documentary where, "an infamous Doctor Who screenwriter is reluctantly dragged back into the American Whoniverse, in this funny and moving documentary about finding family in the unlikeliest of places." It launched in the UK in late October and will be available on home media in some territories later this very month. But did you know that, on the podcast which gave birth to the Doctor Who Show - Who Wars - we actually interviewed that screenwriter (Matthew Jacobs)? And that he spoke at length about the Doctor Who Am I project? Yes, on August 9, 2015 we ran a 40m interview with Matthew, touching on Doctor Who Am I, The Emperor's New Groove, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Star Wars, and more. All conducted by Kate - @kamiduu. What we have made here is an edit of that interview, basically cutting more than 50% out (so if you want to hear him talk Disney, Young Indy, George Lucas, etc, you will need to seek out the original episode), and we're left with a very Doctor Who and Doctor Who Am I oriented chat. Seven years have gone by since this interview was conducted, but we think you'll find the chat relevant and a great preamble to seeing the doco!
