What happens when you mix a real, no kidding fear of going outside, a comedian, sharp wit and a no holds barred look at what's really going on with outdoor recreation gate-keeping? You get an honest, hilarious and confronting look at what heading outside means in America -- and how you can change that. That's the theme of Ivy Le's narrative Spotify podcast FOGO, or Fear of Going Outside. Unlike basically every other guest I've ever had on Humans Outside, Ivy is definitely not outdoor-minded. But after trying outdoor stuff including camping and hunting, she's got some takeaways to share that we all need to hear. Maybe the AI tool I use to help me with show notes says it best (or at least funniest). According to that tool, in this episode you'll hear about: The anecdote for attracting attention in a state park. Challenging traditional ideas of camping and encouraging exploration for people of color. Ivy's difficulty finding a nature store and going to REI instead. Acceptance of rats in New York City as sentient neighbors. (OK, this AI tool is fired -- but you're intrigued, aren't you?) Want to know what those takeaways have to do with anything? Listen now! The great outdoors is overrated, says Ivy Le, a comedian and podcaster from Austin, Texas. Ivy, a self-admitted indoorswoman, took on camping, and then hunting, as a sort of exercise in reverse colonialism. Ivy is Asian, you see, as well as a bisexual Buddhist mom with allergies, and she couldn't see herself, or anyone like her, in a tent in the woods with a gun, ready to butcher and eat whatever she catches. So she set out to see what she was missing, and the result is FOGO - Fear of Going Outside, a hilarious and eye-opening look at nature by someone who finds it unnatural. Ivy Le is Vietnamese American comedian from Austin, Texas. She's a first generation college grad who speaks Spanish, German, Vietnamese and English. She's also a reporter, a poet, and a bi mom of two kids who is on a mission to queer up comedy and decolonize everything. In her podcast, FOGO: Fear of Going Outside, Ivy Le takes on the great outdoors—very, very reluctantly. The result is a lot of jokes about poop, icky things in nature, and why people choose to sleep on the ground. But FOGO also offers a refreshing take on a nature show: Ivy is the daughter of Vietnamese immigrants and she presents an alternative approach to the “reckless white men” that she says have dominated this space. In her first season, Ivy learned to camp. This year, she upped the ante and tried hunting. Here experience proved to be more enlightening—and humbling—than she ever imagined. Happy Vernal Equinox, Succotashians! I'm your every-other-weekly-host, Marc Hershon, and thanks for plucking Episode 348 out of the soundcastosphere, an episode I'm calling “A Spring Bouquet of Clips” because, well, this show is dropping close to the first day of Spring! Speaking of Spring, something that's springing up very soon is the 12th anniversary of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. Your co-host and mine, Tyson Saner, will be joining me for a celebratory episode where we'll look back on the show's dozen years. We'll have some clips from shows, classic Henderson's Pants ads, some congratulatory messages, and more! It's still not too late if YOU might want to record a quick message with your thoughts and/or feelings on our 12th anniversary! We'd love to play it on the big celebration show! You can call it in, to our Succotash Show and Runaway Truck Ramp Hotline, at (818) 921-7212 OR record it and upload the .wav or MP3 file to us at http://hightail.com/u/Succotash! The aforementioned Mr. Saner was here last week, hosting Episode 347, entitled “Hollywood Adjacent”, and he featured clips from such soundcastery as How Did This Get Made, Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, and Nooner Podcast! I'm not sure where you get your servings of Succotash these days, but know that you can always get it fresh from a bazillion soundcast distribution points on the internet and, as always, on our homesite at SuccotashShow.com. My Spring Bouquet of Clips for you for this episode includes FOGO, Tell Me About It, and The Best Show. In addition, I have another drop-in from comedian Dan St. Paul with a selection from his Slices blog, this one called “The Thai That Unbinds”. At some point during the proceedings, we'll be rudely interrupted by our booth announcer, Bill Heywatt, and an unimportant message from our free-loading, free-wheeling sponsor Henderson's Pants and their new Random Pants, for a truly captive-ating fit. Oy. Let's just get started, shall we? CLIPS FOGO: Fear Of Going Outside I'm not going to lie to you. I don't depend on my own wits and taste when it comes to trying to find out about everything available in the expanding soundcastiverse. I read reviews. I skim “20 Best Comedy Soundcasts This Year!” lists (although they NEVER use the Soundcast word.) And I get email from PR people. One PR “regular” is Kathryn Musilek from Shark Party Media. And she's been telling me for a while to check out the FOGO: Fear Of Going Outside soundcast. So I finally did. And it's terrific! Hosted by Ivy Le, “the most reluctant host ever”, according to the press release. It goes on: “Most nature shows are hosted by reckless white men, but avid indoorswoman Ivy Le is an Asian mom with severe allergies.” I listened to the first couple episodes and it was intriguing to hear the exploits of Ivy as she really wants to try to embrace the great outdoors. In the second season, she's really pretty much looking at her comfort zone in the rearview mirror. In Epi5 of the new season, with the help of Jesse Griffiths, a renowned chef/hunter, Ivy sets out to butcher an entire hog! Tell Me About ItSuccotash listeners have run across Adal Rifai, the host of this next new show, called Tell Me About It, a couple times. First back in 2015 when we clipped Hello from the Magic Tavern in Epi113, where he plays Chunt the Changeling. And again at the end of 2022, in Epi334 when we snipped Hey Riddle Riddle, in which Adal is the co-host. His new show, Tell Me About It, is couched as a game show, with Adal playing himself as an eccentric billionaire who challenges his guests to talk about, argue about and, eventually, defend a topic or thing they love dearly to try to climb the Most Interesting thing scoreboard against previous and future guests. The questions are absurd-ish, the scoring even more so, none of it made any easier because of Eric Silver, Adal's butler, who tries to keep things running smoothly. In our clip, the guest is friend of Succotash and one of the creators of San Francisco Sketchfest Janet Varney, who you may know from Avatar: The Legend of Korra, and her own soundcast, The JV Club. She's onboard to shove her interests in minatures up that scoreboard but first, she has to help host Adal understand what miniatures even are…  The Best ShowI'm not sure how, in 12 years of doing this show, we missed clipping the Best Show with Tom Sharpling. It's not obscure by any means — it was originally a terrestrial radio show — plus I've heard of it for years, and have heard Tom Sharpling on other soundcasts. He's big friends with Marc Maron, too. I guess what finally grabbed me was tht he managed to get an interview with Matt Berry, who I am a huge fan of, and you probably are, too. He's a British comic and actor, and he's a regular on the TV series version of What We Do In The Shadows. ‘Nuff said? In this snippet of their convo, Matt talks about having to decide between pursuing music or comedy…or did he? Slices: The Thai That BindsI played one of these essays in my recent Epi346, from comedian Dan St. Paul's Substack “Slices” blog. He's back with a tale of his first foray going after a Thai massage. Check it out… Clips. An Essay. And a pants commercial. Who can ask for more? As I'm already a day late dropping this episode, I've not got time to dip into the TweetSack this time, but those social handles will keep another couple of weeks. If you're hurting for more Succotash, Tyson Saner will be back around this corner in less than a week with Episode 349 and then it will be just one or two more shows before our 12th Anniversary show! Thanks so much for listening. And, speaking of listening, if anyone asks you if you've heard anything good lately, won't you please pass the Succotash? —    Marc Hershon

This week on Yes But Why, I talk to Maximilian Hansen, improv performer and teacher from Uppsala, Sweden. Maximilian Hansen is the founder and artistic director of Mind Melt. He has performed and taught improv in, among others: England, Ghana, India, Ireland, Kenya, Slovenia, Germany and the United States. Max is a curious and physical improv performer. As a teacher/coach, he creates a positive atmosphere that encourages the participants to push their limits while having a good time. Max's company, Mind Melt is an improv community based out of Uppsala, Sweden that provides in person and online workshops and ImproJams to participants from Sweden, France, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Australia and more! Tasked with assignments from assisting the National Heritage Board to representing improvisational theater at TEDx, Mind Melt has been excited to spread improv to beginners and advanced students alike! Outside of Mind Melt, Max has previously developed course curricula for other improv groups; and he has been involved in starting an international improvisation theater festival. Max is also a member of Ohana, a European project that brings together 50 of Europe's improvisers to exchange experiences and discuss the world of improvisational theater. In our conversation, Max and I get philosophical right away. We discuss the fact that both of us have very bad memories and we muse on how that affects us as storytellers and improvisers. We talk about making the decision to be an artist over and over, redoubling our efforts when opportunities slip away. Max tells me about his trip to Philadelphia in 2014 and how that led him to the discovery of improv festivals and the larger international improv scene. Max tells me about the vibrant artistic community in Uppsala and all the great performers working there right now. We chat about Mind Melt and how their classes add to the current landscape of improv in Uppsala. We discuss Max's efforts to build community during the pandemic. Support Maximilian Hansen by taking online courses with Mind Melt! And by keeping an eye out for any Mind Met online jams! Also, you should definitely invite him to your international improv festivals as soon as they start happening again! **Special thanks to contributors of the new intro: Amanda Buckley, Ivy Meehan, Laxmi Priya, Gael Doorneweerd Perry, Laura Doorneweerd Perry, Ivy Le, Vishok Verma, Jess Napthine-Hodgkinson, and Neil Curran. ** Yes But Why Podcast is a proud member of the HC Universal Network family of podcasts. Ivy Le was an avid indoorswoman with severe allergies and a burning curiosity about wild places. She was obsessed with nature shows but had no relationship with the natural world. So she decided to go camping and, of course, make a podcast about her experience. The result is FOGO: Fear of Going Outside, which chronicles Le's efforts to understand what's so great about the outdoors. Because she's a talented comic, her approach to the most basic questions of how and why we play in the woods is enjoyable, whether you're a seasoned adventurer or a nature newbie. But she's doing more than just cracking jokes: her humor might actually be shifting the conversation about who belongs in wild spaces. On this episode of the Outside Podcast, we talk with Le and then listen to the debut of FOGO. This episode was brought to you by Hydro Flask, a company that believes every adventure starts with two simple words: let's go! Ivy was selected to be one of the 10 out of 18,000 applicants to go through Spotify's first SoundUp podcast accelerator for women of color. She is also widely published as a reporter, a poet, and an advocate on immigration and civil rights issues. In our conversation, I talk to Ivy about what motivates her as an artist. She tells me she is obsessed with language and that makes so much sense. Ivy is pretty much always writing! We talk about money and how that can be a barrier to entry for creative aspirations. Not everyone can just go out and take acting classes or dance lessons. But “you don't need to have money to become a great writer,” she says. I love how Ivy so confidently and efficiently knocks down every obstacle in her way. Ivy currently writes in all the work she does – podcasting, public relations, journalism, comedy! Ivy tells me about the Diversity Initiative that gave her the push to start her podcasting project. We discuss current day gatekeeping and the lack of opportunities for women of color in creative fields. Despite the uphill battle, Ivy gushes about what a great and supportive community she made connecting with the other women from the Spotify SoundUp podcast accelerator. She really makes the most out of every adventure she has. Speaking of adventure, Ivy tells me about how her love of nature shows inspired her to create her podcast, “FOGO: Fear of Going Outside.” She talks about raising the money with Kickstarter and the dedication it requires to connect with the fans even before the project is made. She is an expert at marketing though, so FOGO podcast is loved by indoor people and outdoor people alike! Support Ivy Le by listening to her podcast, “FOGO: Fear of Going Outside” on Spotify TODAY! The month of May happens to be both Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and Mental Health Month. The current period has been one of tragedy, hope and ongoing tension for Asians in the U.S. Since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in early 2020, Asians have been frequently scapegoated as bringers of contagion. More recently, a spate of violent attacks on Asian Americans has heightened their sense of vulnerability and brought issues of trauma to the forefront. For this episode of Into the Fold, we sought out comedienne Ivy Le, a second generation Vietnamese American podcaster, writer, performer and activist, to share her perspective on the status of Asian Americans in the year 2021 with a focus on the lessons this holds for those who care about mental health and building a more just and equitable future. Were back with another interview episode. This time, we chat with Ivy Le, a podcaster here in Austin and an alum of the 2018 Spotify Sound Up accelerator program. Ivy was chosen to be a part of the program that Spotify put together last year to educate and support women of color in developing podcasts. Ivy talks a lot about the Spotify program, what she learned there, there are lots of takeaways for podcasters in this interview. Ivy’s podcast is called FOGO, which is short for Fear of Going Outside. It’s a very unique show, sort of a hybrid of comedy show, narrative storytelling, and personal journal. She’s currently in production on the first season.  And like a lot of podcasters we talk to , she’s also a writer, she covered the Beer beat for a long time for the Austin Chronicle, and she’s also master marketer with a history in marketing and communication, and she is great at all that stuff. So lots to to learn from Ivy in this episode. Did I mention she’s also a comedian? She does it all, and it was great to learn form her experience.  The music heard in this episode is by Black Ant, used under Creative Commons.
