I den sjätte säsongens första avsnitt pratar vi med två anrika institutioner: Svenska Barnboksakademin och Svenska Akademien. Vad gör egentligen våra akademier? Hur blir man invald?

Three years ago, when I started thinking about making a podcast about insurance and history, I had only one topic in mind: slavery. It took three years of reading and researching before I was ready to share it with you, but this episode represents part one of a three-part series about insurance and slavery—an overview of the Atlantic Slave trade and how insurance contributed to and supported that trade. It's a tough topic, but an important one, for insurance professionals and history buffs alike. This is a story about how capitalism developed in Europe and the Americas, about colonialism, the cost of labor, transcontinental marine shipping of kidnapped human beings, and how insurance supported all these things. And how underwriters decide what to insure, and how to insure it. The original episode is available on this podcast by searching for or scrolling down to Episode 46 on your podcast app or by visiting aarecoveryinterviews.com. At age 13, Amanda was challenged by her parents to drink half a bottle of Crown Royal. It left her sick and passed out on the bathroom floor in a pool of vomit. Yet she couldn't wait to do it again, with any liquor but Crown Royal! From there, Amanda rapidly progressed in her drinking and drug use. By 15, she had escaped her childhood home and went to live with drug-dealing boyfriend. When that didn't work out, she moved in with her grandparents, but drugs and alcohol barged back into her life and she found herself on a downward trend into heavy drinking. She went to work in a bar, which allowed her to drink with little consequence, save the occasional firing. She somehow managed to live on her own in an apartment across the street from the bar, to cut the risk of DWI. But the darkness of the disease descended into her life and by her late 20's, she had lost about everything and had to live with her sister, the first person to ever call her an alcoholic. A DWI lead her into the legal system, replete with court-ordered IOP treatment and twice-weekly AA meetings. It was in Alcoholics Anonymous that she finally faced her alcoholism and drug addiction, though she didn't get sober immediately. But that belly full of booze and headful of AA was sufficient to trigger her moment of truth. She had a sudden spiritual experience of the kind Bill W. talks about in the Big Book. That was 3½ years ago, when Amanda went “all in” the Program of AA. She got a sponsor, worked all 12 steps multiple times, attended regular meetings, engaged in service work, and sponsored other women. Today she lives a full and rich life from the center of the Program and can be seen after meetings arranging informal get-togethers at local restaurants and other fellowship. I've known her since the earliest days of her sobriety and am grateful to have had a front-row seat watching this fellow alcoholic really get what AA is all about. Amanda's story at three years sober will inspire those with less time to stay regularly engaged in AA. For those with more time, her story may trigger reminiscence of early years of sobriety. So for newcomers, old-timers, and everyone in between, settle back for a comfortable listen to the 46th interview in this podcast series with my good friend and AA sister, Amanda B. If you've enjoyed my AA Recovery Interviews series and my Big Book podcast, have a listen to Lost Stories of the Big Book, 30 Original Stories Missing from the 3rd and 4th Editions of Alcoholics Anonymous. It's an engaging audiobook I narrated to bring these stories to life for AA members who've never seen them. These timeless testimonials were originally cut to make room for newer stories in the 3rd and 4th Editions. But their vitally important messages of hope are as meaningful today as when they were first published. Many listeners will hear these stories for the first time. Lost Stories of the Big Book is available on Audible, Amazon, and iTunes. It's also available as a Kindle book and in Paperback from Amazon if you'd like to read along with the audio. I also invite you to check out my latest audio book, “Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered From Alcoholism”. This is the word-for-word, cover-to-cover reading of the First Edition of the Big Book, published in 1939. It's a comfortable, meaningful, and engaging way to listen to the Big Book anytime, anyplace. Have a free listen at Audible, i-Tunes, or Amazon. Visit the AA Recovery Interviews website for more information and to contact me, Howard L. Check out Howard's Big Book Podcast, the complete unabridged audio version of the First and Second Editions of Alcoholics Anonymous. We share only our personal experiences with A.A. recovery. We acknowledge that AA's sole concern is the recovery and continued sobriety of those alcoholics who turn to the Fellowship for help. As members of AA, our primary purpose is to stay sober and to help other alcoholics achieve sobriety. – Howard L.]

00:00:00 - Kelly and Ryan are psyched to be joined by Gina Zwicky (@GinaGoesOutside) to talk about all things herps (amphibians + reptiles)! We begin with a discussion about Gina’s work the immune system of Caribbeans lizards, specifically the major histocompatibility complexes of the Saban’s anole using the National Center for Biotechnology Information’s (NCBI) awesome genetic database. And Ryan transitions the group to the next segment but half remembering a cool project on the island of Dominica that will be a joint rum distiller and sea turtle conservation hub. Neat! 00:27:08 - Amphibians need to stay near water, and much like them we also enjoy a drink. First, Gina shares her LaCroix habit, lime at the moment but ranking of flavors is involved. Kelly takes a break from red wine with a warm, relaxing cup of chamomile tea. And even though nobody asked, Ryan is having a Black Rock Milk Stout from Devil’s Backbone Brewing in Kelly’s neck of the wood AKA East Virginia. We also talk a bit about what it means to be a super taster and how to test yourself to see if you are one too. 00:37:39 - In the second segment, we talk about Gina’s work with Frog Watch, an AZA accredited program to get folks outside in their area to monitor frog populations. Gina runs tours in her neck of the woods in souther Louisiana, but if you’re in the US there may be a similar program nearby so go and check it out where you live and see if you can go listen to some cool frogs! 01:02:21 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like frog watching, they’re both mostly about listening. First, we thank Amanda B. for becoming a recurring PayPal donor (again!). Thanks, Amanda! A mother sat by her child's hospital bed as doctors declared him brain dead. Amanda Bonfitto watched her beautiful four-and-a-half year old son Harrison, trying to process. How could this happen? Why was this happening? It was then, in the midst of this dense fog while attempting to make sense of something which could only seem totally nonsensical that Amanda recalled a conversation. Just a few days earlier Harrison said he was going to stop breathing and die. Four days later, it was the week of Thanksgiving in America, and Harrison unexpectedly and suddenly choked. There was a logical medical explanation for this untimely death. But how could the dramatic impact of losing her child begin to make any sense? How will life carry on? Is there really life after Harrison? In this powerful episode, I am joined by Amanda and I believe Harrison's energy is present, in this fragile exploration of Amanda's story that is filled with her incredible strength, vulnerability and resilience. Amanda shares her life journey by walking listeners through and reflecting on her experiences while carefully unfolding her personal learning and self discovery leading to her 'spiritual awakening.'She says: "It has been a beautiful and hard journey into the light. I still feel like I am mostly standing in the doorway now, learning how to care for myself and scanning the room of spirituality, with one foot ready to step, deciding where to step first." Amanda plans to launch her own podcast titled This Won't Break You and is inviting listeners to contact her directly at: thiswontbreakyou@gmail.com if you have a story to share. “On this earth there is room for everyone: here the entire human family must find the resources to live with dignity, through the help of nature itself—God’s gift to his children—and through hard work and creativity. At the same time we must recognize our grave duty to hand the earth on to future generations in such a condition that they too can worthily inhabit it and continue to cultivate it.” —Pope Benedict XVI, Charity in Truth (Caritas in Veritate), no. 50 Friends of the Show get all Premium Content! November 19-22 of 2019 I attended STD Engage. The most universal way I can think to describe it is that it was a conference of public health professionals where the goal was to exchange experiences in order to best serve those affected by STDs. What I learned cannot be condensed into the episodes I recorded while there, but this is definitely a start! I met and interviewed Amanda B. Dennison, Director, Programs and Partnerships about her experience. Amanda was diagnosed with genital herpes and as a public health professional stigma has to look a little different, right? Amanda B. and Rony J. follow Harvard professor and professional NEW YORKER-er Jill Lepore through birth, adolescence, work, and death, via a Puritan board game called THE MANSION OF HAPPINESS. Amanda antagonizes a (maybe) dead man, while Rony comes face to face with a giant conundrum."Impure thought!" the child ejaculated. "Go back three spaces!"We joke because otherwise we'd remember that women didn't get the vote until 1920.Who has the movie rights to the Anne Carroll Moore vs. Katharine White story?--RURTHER FEEDING:"Are Robots Competing for your Job?" by Lepore, Jill.Email us! tpbcpodcast@gmail.com
Cecily and Alden test their memory on the Wheel of Morality before joining Yakko, Wakko and Dot on the Warner Brothers Lot to talk Animaniacs.
Amanda B. and Rony J. pick through a tender family drama in the looming shadow of the hallmark horror of the 20th century. Come for the cute animal allegory, stay for the holy-crap-they-force-marched-these-people-miles-in-the-woods-at-night-and-left-them-packed-like-sardines-standing-up-in-train-cars-only-opening-the-doors-to-collect-the-dead-and-that's-AFTER-the-war-was-basically-over. ‘LABYRINTH’ – We all know of the word ‘Labyrinth’, and many people have a knowledge of the ancient mythology associated with the image of circular patterns scribed upon ancient rocks, or those paved on cathedral floors and some that have been cut through turf at particular locations, and many made of strategically placed rocks along the Baltic coast. Though how many people have discovered that during periods of time in their lives, they are actually walking (living) in a personal Labyrinth? Antman, Heather and Amanda B reveal the strange incident during an evening in the Autumn of 2017 where they collectively found themselves experiencing just such a phenomena. There are those who believe that in the current conditions of the World, humanity seems to be heading for extinction; whilst others state that such beliefs stem from an extreme pessimism and a misconception that existence has always profoundly changed throughout history. We've drawn together a panel of people interested in discussing this ever present issue. In this episode Antman and Heather are joined by Peter Knight, Sue Wallace and Amanda B. The most controversial episode ever. It hits the fan. n.m.l. went off on many tangents. And where is Amanda B?
Nick channels his inner dialogue while Amanda B tells the tale of her encounter with her partner's tail! Sounds intriguing right?! Stay tuned...this week, this dynamic duo puts you on your butt! (pun definitely intended)
This episode, n.m.l. & Amanda B. beefed. "Joseph the Star" gets high & Amanda feet are apparently crusty & she is half indian...clearly it's lit! #ThatsMyBestFriend

Welcome back! Topics covered in this episode include: Ron Paul and the Modern Freedom Movement Why “money” and “economics” are important to achieving personal liberty Evolution of Crypto-currencies (Bitcoin vs Dash) How Amanda became the first-ever podcast/vblog to get funding DIRECTLY from a blockchain (and why this is a necessary step towards crypto-economic longevity). Tip Liberty Entrepreneurs with Dash! XyJPi91jEW6Zqz6qXX1qxzqpqDhUwhT3gf (or Bitcoin) 1KraNMPw7QMaaLmHsiMj57QKq9GHvZLKgh Amanda B Johnson started down the rabbit-hole of libertarianism and volunteerism in 2011. At the time she was struggling to find work and became really interested in what caused the economy to become so crappy. She heard about a guy named Ron Paul who was running for President and was shocked when he sounded like he was speaking the truth. With her new found enthusiasm, Amanda started creating liberty related, Ron Paul videos on Youtube and quickly gathered following. She became fascinated with money and economics and the role they play in pursuit of personal freedom and wanted to share her new found perspective with the world. In 2013, Amanda encountered Bitcoin. Like many of us, she read and studied it with passion and eventually wrote blog posts for several large Bitcoin publications including Bitcoin Magazine, CoinTelegraph, Bitcoin.com. In late 2015, Amanda started a YouTube series entitled The Daily Decrypt, which discussed the currency competition and evolution taking place in the crypto space. By mid-2016, she decided to specialize in one network in particular -- Dash -- which she finds to be the most technically and economically superior thus poised to gain strength, market-cap and influence. She named the new show Dash: Detailed. Amanda and her colleagues are the first ever podcast or video blog to be sponsored and paid DIRECTLY from the Dash blockchain, or any blockchain for that matter. Someone needs to add this to Wikipedia. A self-funding blockchain this is an evolutionary step for cryptocurrencies. Unlike Bitcoin, the Dash blockchain allocates a certain % of the block-reward (or inflationary payout) to fund projects which help build, support and market their network and is much more business-like in their approach.. Dash: Detailed is showing the world how blockchains and crypto-assets can be used to build and support a voluntary community and economy with a open-source and transparency money. In this episode, Jordon talks with Comedian Ken Krantz, who recently lost his good friend Mandy to cancer. Ken reflects on his friendship with Amanda and her family, as he continues to process the loss after only finding out that she was sick days before her funeral. We also discuss the power of doing truthful dark material, and how difficult it is even for those who are among the best at it. Ken helped create a fund to help others with cancer afford their medical expenses, and he produced a comedy benefit show that he hopes to continue annually. Glasgow-based knitwear designer and purveyor of super-cute stitch markers, Amanda B Collins, is our guest on the podcast today. Amanda has been designing for a few years, producing patterns for the UK knitting press, including Knit Now Magazine and Pom Pom Quarterly. She has also released her own designs in self published collections as well as a series of shawls inspired by Glasgow. Spoiler: 'Bru' is a favourite of mine. A doctor by day, she designs in the evenings, when she's not playing Wacky Races in her yellow Fiat 500. We discuss all manner of things, along with the usual questions you'd expect in the interview section. Be warned, there is some deviation down quite funny rabbit holes. Interview starts at 2:30. You can find Amanda on Twitter as @owlprintpanda and she blogs at www.owlprintpanda.blogspot.com Show notes are at www.shinybees.com Music for this episode is Adam and the Walter Boys with 'I Need a Drink'.
00:00:00 - Why did the mountain lion cross the road? Well it couldn't, because there were too many cars. It has now reached the point where mountain lions (aka pumas, cougars, catamounts, etc.) are showing reduced genetic diversity because they can't get across roads. Turns out there is really simple solution: give them roads or tunnels. The problem is just convincing people to build them (which would save money in the long run, but humans don't think like that so it'll probably never happen). Oh well, the cats were nice to have around while they lasted. 00:17:26 - Joe, who likes both driving and conservation (a rare treat) enjoys a Lilikoi Passionfruit drink he took from a car event just so you, the listener, could hear him enjoy it. Abe goes back to one of his old favorites, a Dos Perros from Yazoo Brewing in Nashville. A brief discussion of Mexican brewing history ensues. Ryan throws his weight behind Negroni Week, an official drinking event that also supports charity. To take it a step further, he even uses a new gin from Wyoming: Backwards Distilling Contortionist Gin. 00:24:46 - Time zones are the worst, right? Of course. What if we got rid of them? That'd be much better. At least that what Ryan is trying to convince everyone of when they discuss the absolute mess of a system that the railroads created back in the day. Get outta here, railroads! We have planes and electric cars and stuff now! Take a poll to tell us if you agree or disagree. 00:51:25 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like Daylight Saving Time, difficult to keep track of but easier with the internet. Joe's paleoPOW is a new recurring donation from Amanda B. Thanks so much, Amanda! We briefly lose Abe but he shows up just in time to hear a few new iTunes reviews left by Yappari817 and melankholia as read by Ryan. Abe has a voicemail from the very well-read Galen who wants it to be known far and wide that Patrick is funnier than Ryan and that Ryan should admit it. He does. Finally, what would happen if you got struck by lightning in a suit of armor? Who knows? Not us, that's who. Thanks for listening and be sure to check out the Brachiolope Media Network for more great science podcasts! For most of us, bedroom rock stays locked away in the bedroom. Fortunately, that isn't the case for Amanda B. She shares a couple 10-plus-year-old shoegazey tracks that crisscrossed the Pacific Ocean and eventually got put to tape here in New York. (Songs: "Look Alive" by Crazy Pills, "The Stars Above" and "Bebe" performed by Adolescence, and "Break It Down" by Crazy Pills. Photo: Amanda B.)
