The craft beer industry is at an inflection point. Many upstart breweries have shuttered not long after opening, and even some of the original stars of the craft beer scene have gone bottoms-up in the last couple years. But one of the original craft breweries and most famous is doubling down. New Glarus, brewers of Spotted Cow, Moon Man and some of the most appreciated beers in the country, announced plans in October to build a $55 million, 65,000 square-foot addition to its campus. Founders Deb and Dan Carey join Myles Dannhausen Jr. to talk about the expansion, Dan's 40-year beer-making journey, and of course, why New Glarus beer is only sold in Wisconsin.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains, with R&D Vintage 2023, from New Glarus Brewing. Guest host Jane picked this 1982 picture starring Diane Lane as a young woman dealt a series of devastating, life altering blows in a short amount of time. She takes her sister and cousin on the road with a couple bands and creates a movement. There's some great music from punk legends, who also play roles in the film. I paired it with a New Glarus award receiving sour, that is one hell of a good time.
In this episode, Katherine May (Carey) sits down with Scott to talk about his story of how he came to work at New Glarus Brewing. Cheers!

In their latest Fireside Chat, Breakside Brewery's Ben Edmunds and Beervana's Jeff Alworth speak with three brewers whose breweries do not make hoppy ales. We wanted to hear why they chose this path, and what it entails. Because IPAs are overwhelmingly popular among craft beer drinkers, these breweries have had to create interest in other types of beer. How did they do that? And how does the future look for these breweries? Guests in this show: • Bill Arnott, Founder and Brewer of Seattle's Machine House Brewing. • Dan Carey, Co-founder and Brewer of Wisconsin's New Glarus Brewing. • Alex Ganum, Founder and Brewer at Portland's Upright Brewing.

In this episode of the hard water fishing show Jeff and Jason talk about ice rod trends. - Jason tells a story about the time the bait bucket iced up the fishing rods. - Don't put your leaky bucket next to your reels. Jeff wants to figure out how to be a beer can story writer. - We are looking for a future guest who is a professional beer can story writer. - Jeff Sings (prepare yourself) Real men of Genius, Mr. Beer Can Story Writer! Beer Jason admits that bud light is not an old man beer, but totally redeems himself by cracking open an American classic born in the land of the sky blue waters, a Hamm's. Jason pairs his Hamm's with an iced oatmeal cookie from his custom built iced oatmeal cookie dispenser. [put iced oatmeal cookie picture here] Jeff is drinking a Kid Kölsch from New Glarus Brewing https://newglarusbrewing.com/beers/ourbeers/beer/kid-klsch. It is a great beer from Wisconsin. Gear Flame King Heaters https://amzn.to/3kNWEjN Few More Details on the flame King Heaters - They are a little more expensive and weigh a bit more. - It comes with a thermostat vs low, medium or High. - Buy one and give us a review, we would like to learn more about this heater. Buddy Flex Heater - It has surround heat because of the shape - Is said to be less sensitive to bumping than the buddy heater - Has an accessory to put a cooker on the side, Jason is skeptical if its a good thing. - Buy one and give us a review, we would like to learn more about this heater. Super Capacitor ( Not Flux Capacitor) https://amzn.to/3coztIm - Used to start your car from a low battery. - Not for time travel - Could be better than a jump pack. - Will it work at -30 we are not sure - Never tried this but would like someone to and see how it works out on the ice or in the cold. Versa Auger Carrier https://icerunnerhouses.com/versa-auger-carrier/ - something to carry your auger outside of your ice shack on your snowmobile or ATV. - having quick access to your auger makes you more mobile. Mudhole.com - rod building supplies https://mudhole.com/ A place to get everything you need for ice fishing. ( no we are not sponsored, just a cool site) Ice Fishing Rod Trends We go in depth in ice fishing rods, we go down the rabbit hole. Ten pages of notes to talk about ice fishing rods, so buckle up. Action Blank Type Seat Eyelets Grip Guides Length - Weight is a big deal in a rod - bent handle rods are not talked about here, maybe called the duck Action From Overton's https://blog.overtons.com/fishing/how-to-choose-perfect-ice-fishing-rod Ultra-fast action: Rod bends only at the tip Fast-action: Rod bends only at the tip Medium-action: Rod bends to the middle of the blank Slow action: Rod bends to the bottom of the handle Rod Blank Fiberglass and Graphite are the two main options. Graphite is more popular and sensitive, but fiberglass still has a place in the ice fishing world. One of the main benefits of fiberglass is they are more durable than graphite, and you will have less broken rods. Jason compares rod quality to 100% orange juice and 5% juice. Pay attention to the action of the rod and not just the price. If you get a cheap combo that is slow action you are going to struggle. The action of the rod is more important than what it is made of at lower price points. We both agree that buying rods and reels separate is better than combos generally. Seat Jeff and Jason both agree that bands do not hold your reel on your rod. If you get a reel the best way to wrap your reel with electrical table then put the reel on and they put another layer electrical tape. That way you don't damage your cork. Low end rods typically come with a seat, high end rods do not. Eyelets/Guides Jason pays attention to the first guide, if its to small it freezes up. Having two different rods one for outside with bigger guides and smaller guides for inside. Heated Eyelets vs Not Jason found a patent for heated eyelets on a ice fishing rod. This could be great or the next jig up. Jeff imagines that this ice rod could look like a Ghostbusters proton pack. https://patents.justia.com/patent/20170325439 Split Grip v Full Grip Split grip is suppose to be lighter more sensitive, better balance and they look cool. Full grip is more traditional. Jason says it really does not matter when you have gloves on. Jeff is told by sales person at Cabela's that men of a certain age like the full grip, and was in that category. Jason recommends putting your finger on the line and take the rod out of the equation. Foam v Cork v Carbon Grip Jason and Jeff both prefer cork. EVA foam can be more durable than cork. Jason has found that if you take the plastic wrap off the cork before you use it you may feel the fish better. Even if the plastic makes your cork look nice longer. Carbon is something neither one of us has used, but think it might be pretty sensitive. Rod Covers and Lure Covers Use rod slicks and lure covers to keep your rods safe. Here is an example https://bit.ly/30FGTEH I also like the lure covers like these that allow you to keep the lures on without making a mess. https://amzn.to/3nsVcW2 I have not used this specific brand but have similar ones and they work great. Legend A legend from ice fishing related to a cell phone.

Five weeks! The countdown is on to the start of the college football season. Nebraska had its annual fan day, and practice has started. In this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by the Rimington Trophy, Dr. Rob Zatechka says we can talk until we are red in the face about what "could" be this season for the Huskers. Still, the reality is nobody has a clue until that first game. What continues to dominate the discussion of college football is conference realignment. Dr. Rob and Travis Justice pick up the conversation right where they left last week. As predicted, a lot has changed since our drunk-filled recording. Texas and Oklahoma accepted the invitation to join the SEC. The move is sure to set off a reaction of even more schools posturing for the massive amounts of money that are sure to be generated. You may have noticed Nebraska and the Big 10, for the matter, have been pretty quiet when it comes to realignment. However, one thing is clear, if the Big 10 is going to keep pace with the SEC, it will have to add more schools. Will they come from the PAC-12, leftovers from the Big-12, or somewhere else? To get us primed for our conversation today, we are drinking "Serendipity" from New Glarus Brewing. A sour ale brewed with cherries, apples, and cranberries. We are always looking for great beers to drink and breweries to promote. If you have suggestions both locally and nationally, send them to us, doctalksports@gmail.com. Nebraska Center, Cam Jurgens is on the recently released Rimington Award watch list. It's given annually to the best Center in college football. Jurgens is one of six Big 10 Conference Centers on the list. This year, the Trophy committee worked with Pro Football Focus (PFF) to narrow down its list to the top 40 centers. The biggest ticket and most in-demand at Memorial Stadium this year is NOT for a football game. Garth Brooks is coming to Lincoln. The show was sold out in a matter of minutes. Chad Carr from Ticket Express stops by the show. You'll hear Chad all season long on this podcast with his weekly "Ticket Talk" segments. Make sure to get your game-day gear at Husker Hounds! Doug Busk is the V.P. of Communications and Marketing at one of the premier schools in the south, Emory University. Endres joined us on the show this week to talk about the journey. We've got more hot coolship talk this week, a staple of their Native Culture series. They released their first Lambic-style beers in late 2020 and will release a Geuze-style later this year. Coolships, wine, and fruity seltzers In addition to beer they've also began making "low-intervention wine", also called natural wines, that use less or no additives in the process. Crooked Run has also got into the seltzer game, making massively overfruited versions. (How did we get here? Wasn't seltzer supposed to be a lighter, lower calorie alternative to beer??? Now we're overfruiting them and even making smoothie versions? Sheesh.) Like many breweries, Crooked Run has taken a hit from the pandemic. But shifting into more packaged product to go has helped them weather through. Enders is excited for what they've got planned this year, with big releases from the Native Culture series, more wine, and yes... even more of those fruit-filled seltzers. Wow, we've been at this thing for five years now... The world of 2016 was a different time. There were a lot fewer breweries than there are now, a lot more IBUs in our IPAs, and a total lack of global pandemics. Good times. When we started Beer Guys Radio we intended to be a local show covering the Georgia beer scene. Folks seemed to enjoy our chatter and asked us to cover beer outside the state and we started getting more radio stations across the country. With that push we changed the format to cover beer all over the world. We got the squad back together for this episode. Beer Guys Radio's original co-host and co-founder Aaron Williams and Becky Smalls were in the studio to reminisce as well as look ahead. We talk about how BGR got its start, the trends we liked (and didn't like) over the last five years, some of our travel adventures, and what we think the future holds. Thanks for taking this ride with us! We hope to keep this bus going for a good, long time. CHEERS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR! The Beer List We tried to curate this list to be meaningful to our 5th anniversary so here's a little extra info on why these beers made the cut for this show. Creature Comforts Tropicalia Why: Trop was a benchmark beer for our local beer scene in Georgia. It upped the bar for beers that came after it and we saw a lot of great new breweries and existing breweries really up their game. 2013 Gouden Carolus Cuvée Van De Keizer Why: I was introduced to this beer in 2016 and immediately fell in love. I've hoarded several and always look for a special time to open one. Monday Night Garage Club Level 5 Why: Level 5, 5 years. Easy peasy. 2016 Cigar City Hunahpu's Imperial Stout Why: Because 2016. Also, it's delicious. 2019 MAZURT RIS ASW Bourbon Barrel Why: MAZURT is technically a homebrewer but they have won medals at Hunahpu's Day and were one of the top rated breweries in the US per Untappd. We ran into our friend Hamp of MAZURT and he gifted us a bottle, so we had to drink it. Every once in a while you sit down with someone in the industry and you just let them talk. Dan Carey of New Glarus is that person. When he speaks, you listen. Dan joined us this week to talk about his humble beginnings, and how he's made New Glarus and Spotted Cow the Brewery/Beer of Wisconsin. He talks about distribution, his choice to concentrate on such a small footprint, and what he learned traveling the world and brewing in another country. We also learn the furthest his beer has traveled even though you can only get it in Wisconsin right now. Segment 2 we talk about the news including Brew Dogs +50% ABV beer, Kristen Bell's kids drinking O'Douls while at 'Zoom School' and we touch a bit more on the age restraints we have in the country vs Europe in drinking. Off Color Brewing was founded with a goal of brewing forgotten beer styles and swears they'll never brew an IPA Off Color Brewing co-founder John Laffler has remained true to his word. Despite the hotness of trendy IPAs, he's yet to offer one at his brewery. Instead you'll find sahti, chicha, and kotbusser or slightly more familiar styles like gose, saison, and wild farmhouse ales. In addition to beer Laffler enjoys bourbon, honey and bees, and he loves the interplay of yeast and bacteria. Before starting his brewery he spent time at Goose Island and had a hand in crafting many of their most famous beers, like Bourbon County Stout and King Henry. He does offer up one beer that might be considered a trendy brew, Dino S'Mores is an adjunct stout with graham flour, marshmallows, vanilla, and cocoa. Trendy or not, it's delicious. As we talked with Laffler he sipped a bottle of Miller High Life. It's no secret that he's a fan of the beer and even brewed a collaboration with Miller. a Wild Ale built on a base of High Life. As mentioned, he has a passion for bees and honey and uses honey in his beers, although Illinois law prevents him from brewing mead due to his licensing. Carrie has decided she needs to deliver a running intervention to call out – what she sees as – a crazy running addiction. For some reason, she thinks wanting to run 100 miles isn't normal. And, of course, I disagree and know that my running adventures are completely normal for trail and ultrarunning. So we're tackling it this week on the podcast. This week on the podcast, Carrie Mess (a.k.a. Dairy Carrie) and I sit down for another Over A Beer episode to discuss. And if you haven't already, you should subscribe to my podcast (RSS link) to listen to all 32 previous episodes. You can find those episode show notes here. My love for running on the trails and in the mountains has been well-documented on Instagram and I've shared several of my running adventures on this blog. And Carrie has followed my adventures from the time I first began a weekly 5k at the beer market in grad school. So it really shouldn't come as a surprise that I've signed up for a 100-mile race in 2020. But Carrie is concerned and wanted to have an intervention. So for episode 033 of the Beef Runner podcast, we sit down and hash it out. I share my journey from a beer market 5k fun run/walk to climbing mountains and spending (literally) all day on the Continental Divide crawling over boulders. We'll let you decide who wins this discussion as Carrie expresses her concern for my sanity and I discuss why I love my crazy running adventures. Let us know what you think about my pursuit of trail and ultrarunning by dropping a comment below or chiming in on Twitter. Thanks to our sponsors (if we had sponsors) – Spotted Cow Beer from New Glarus Brewing for the hydration and to Crawfish Junction for the location for the discussion. What are your thoughts on plant based proteins (a.k.a. alternative proteins, plant milks, fake meats, etc.)? It's been a topic of discussion in the business news headlines and within the agriculture community. So we're tackling it this week on the podcast. This week on the podcast, Carrie Mess (a.k.a. Dairy Carrie) and I sit down for another Over A Beer episode to discuss. You can find episode show notes here. We've seen the marketing and business headlines as a CEO gives a good soundbite, a restaurant adds an option to their menu, or a company has an IPO in the stock market. Alternative proteins are in the public eye and livestock agriculture isn't too pleased. How do we respond? Are these products sticking around? Carrie and Ryan tackle these questions on episode 032 of the Beef Runner podcast. What do you think? Let us know what you think about Alternative Proteins by dropping a comment below or chiming in on Twitter. Thanks to our sponsors (if we had sponsors) – Spotted Cow Beer from New Glarus Brewing for the hydration and to Crawfish Junction for the location for the discussion. Thank a Farmer. We've heard it over the years and I've even joined in the movement myself over the past decade by writing a few articles asking for others to thank us – farmers, ranchers and the agriculture community for the food, fiber and fuel that is used every day. But is that really what we should be asking? This week on the podcast, Carrie Mess (a.k.a. Dairy Carrie) and I sit down for another Over A Beer episode to discuss. You can find all episode show notes here. Hey, I'm guilty of it. If you search my blog, you'll find an article as far back as 2009 asking the world to Thank A Farmer “for all of the hard work a small portion of Americans put forth to feed a growing world population.” But as we've matured in our advocacy efforts, I'd like to think we can realize there is a much more effective way of communicating that message. Carrie and I sit down over a beer to discuss how this campaign had every great intention when it began. There are absolutely appropriate times to ask people to Thank a Farmer. A really good example of this is a campaign like Culvers' Thank You Farmers. However, this has changed over the years with a bit of a self-seeking tone. Farmers aren't the only people who work hard. People don't want to be told they need to be educated. Carrie and I offer our solutions to raising awareness of those who work in agriculture. This has included the evolution of our own brands to correct course and connect with other people as a person rather than trying to be advocates armed with facts, figures and science to tell people they should support agriculture. We share how we've done this and how other advocates can as well. We share a few examples of people who are connecting are examples of doing this. This includes Cara Harbstreet, a registered dietitian from Kansas City (Instagram and Twitter). Let us know what you think about Thank A Farmer by chiming in on Twitter. It's been a few years since Dairy Carrie and I sat down with a pitcher (or a few) of Spotted Cow beer in the back room of the Crawfish Junction bar in Milford, Wisconsin and recorded several episodes for my podcast (formerly known as Agriculture Proud). And, of course, we titled the series Over A Beer, because who doesn't like to sit down with their best friends for great conversations over a beer?!? We covered a ton of topics in the world of agriculture advocacy. You can find those episode show notes here. I recently made a trip back to Wisconsin for the holidays, so we decided it was about time for another round. Carrie and I caught up on a few topics and over the next four weeks, we'll be sharing those podcast episodes. In classic Wisconsin style, Carrie made sure my day started with a Rumchata coffee + a breakfast beer before we made it to the bar (hey... it was vacation) so I think you'll enjoy some good, open conversations over a beer. In today's first round, also known as episode 30 of the Beef Runner podcast, Carrie and I briefly catch up on life events over the past two years. Carrie and her husband Patrick had a second son, Ben (my godson) Carrie discusses the challenges of the dairy industry as milk prices have dropped and growing seasons have been difficult I've moved to Colorado, started a new job, bought a house and cannot stop running Fun fact: Carrie and I recently realized we joined Twitter (@DairyCarrie and @BeefRunner) on the same day 10 years ago. We didn't know each other then, but she now refers to me as her little brother she never asked for. And I do my best to live up to those expectations. SingleSpeed Brewing When SingleSpeed Brewing founder Dave Morgan decided to open a brewery he'd never brewed a single batch of beer. Morgan saw a need for a brewery in his area and decided he would be the one to do it. He headed to the Siebel Institute to figure out this brewing thing. Everything seemed to have worked out pretty well. Morgan gives us the rundown on his journey to opening his brewery and the challenges of expanding into an old Wonder Bread plant. As we sip SingleSpeed's Gable Helles Lager we get some info on Iowa wrestling legend Dan Gable, and find out Tim and Dave have an unusual connection through some wrestling friends. News & Brews ventured out of state again this week, which is fitting since the biggest beer news of late involves an out-of-state brewery, namely the biggest out-of-state brewery in all the land. Anheuser-Busch InBev last week acquired Cleveland's Platform Beer Co. for an undisclosed sum. We discuss why the beer giants would be interested in the Ohio brand — which includes taprooms in Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati, with more in the works — and what it could mean for their respective businesses, the pros and the cons. What's the perspective of the craft beer loyalist and does that matter? We devil's advocate it out. But before that we enjoy some nice, crisp Spotted Cow from Wisconsin's New Glarus Brewing, a woman-owned craft beer pioneer that's only available within that state's borders. Wisconsin native Carrie Ghose drops into the pod for the first time for some native perspective. Come for the insights (why is the Pick ‘n Save in Milwaukee better than Mars Cheese Castle?), but stay for the accents. Other news of note include this aspiring brewery owner and why he wants to bring a brewpub to the King-Lincoln area and how interested persons can contribute toward the upcoming opening of a new taproom for one Central Ohio brewer.

Lots of fun stuff here with Evan, Ryan, and Kyle talking first about the now defunct Valiant Brewing Co. and their Russian mega stout, Marshmallow Quantarium. Seemed like a successful brewery but closed its doors and left a big wake behind it with this white whale which delivered a big vanilla bomb of a stout with a fullness and sweetness like many of the best out there. So why do some good breweries fail? We also discuss the reasons collaboration can build a brewery. Shout outs to New Glarus Brewing and keeping it nostalgic when we travel to Wisconsin, the soon to open Hop Station in Mishawaka, IN, and Mook Meadery, whom we still are looking for samples from. New Glarus Brewing isn't coming soon to a store near you (unless you live in Wisconsin) Daniel and Deb Carey sent their beer to a few other states for a while, but today New Glarus is Wisconsin's beer. The Careys want control of their beer and their company, and the easiest way to do that is to keep it as close to home as possible. The plan seems to be working well for them as New Glarus Brewing is the 17th largest craft brewer in the US, and the 25th largest overall brewery. Carey's brewing history spans over 30 years. He earned a degree in Food Science with an emphasis in malting and brewing from UC Davis in 1983, and was valedictorian of the 1987 Siebel Institute course in Brewing Technology. He apprenticed at a small brewery near Munich and worked for Anheuser-Busch, where he tells us his desk was right next to Mitch Steele's (Stone/New Realm). Daniel Carey joins us on the show this week to talk about his brewing history and the growth of his brewery. He shares insight on why they choose to stay in Wisconsin, passing on buy-out offers, and the importance of being a moral business. We also discuss the Bud Light Super Bowl commercials and get insight on the big deal with corn syrup. We sample a few New Glarus beers and get info on the brews and the styles. Plus, we find out the connection that New Glarus has to good 'ol Atlanta. Craft Beer News – 11/30/18MillerCoors, Pabst settle lawsuit over brewing contract•MillerCoors and Pabst Brewing settled a lawsuit Wednesday in which Pabst claimed the bigger brewer lied about its ability to continue brewing Pabst's beers to put that company out of business.•"We have reached an amicable settlement in the case and are pleased to resolve all outstanding issues with Pabst," MillerCoors said in a statement. Settlement details were not disclosed.•Since 1999, Chicago-based MillerCoors has made and shipped nearly all of Pabst's beers, which include Pabst Blue Ribbon, Old Milwaukee, Lone Star and Schlitz. Pabst's lawyers argued in the company's 2016 lawsuit that MillerCoors worried that Pabst would cut into its market share and devised a plan to stop brewing for the smaller competitor. MillerCoors' attorneys called Pabst's claim a conspiracy theory and said the company was simply deciding what makes economic sense.•The agreement between MillerCoors and Pabst, which was founded in Milwaukee in 1844 but is now headquartered in Los Angeles, expires in 2020 but provides for two possible five-year extensions. The companies disagreed on how the extensions were to be negotiated: MillerCoors argued it had sole discretion to determine whether it can continue brewing for Pabst, whereas Pabst said the companies must work "in good faith" to find a solution if Pabst wanted to extend the agreement but MillerCoors lacked capacity.•However, Pabst said internal documents from MillerCoors showed the company was worried about competition from Pabst and went as far as hiring a consultant to find a way to get out of the brewing agreement.•Pabst needs 4 million to 4.5 million barrels brewed annually and claims MillerCoors is its only option. Pabst's lawsuit sought more than $400 million in damages and a court order for MillerCoors to honor its contract.•MillerCoors and Anheuser-Busch, which have the biggest U.S. market share at 24.8 percent and 41.6 percent, respectively, have been losing business to smaller independent brewers, imports, and wine and spirits in recent years, according to the Brewers Association, a U.S.-based trade group. Overall U.S. beer sales have declined, with shipments down from 213.1 million barrels in 2008 to 204.2 million in 2017, according to the association.Trillium Labor Practices, Brewing Methods QuestionedMassachusetts craft beer maker Trillium Brewing Company’s labor practices and brewing methods are under scrutiny after accusations were lodged last week by a self-described former employee in an online beer forum.According to the former employee, who used the name “Abagofit” in a Beer Advocate forum, Trillium required its retail employees to reapply for jobs that they already held prior to last month’s opening of the company’s new brewery, taproom and restaurant in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood. The ex-worker wrote that the base compensation for employees who had worked for more than three years at the brewery was cut from $8 an hour to $5 an hour to “work the exact same job across the street.”“We apologize that this has caused any of our employees, customers or friends to doubt, in any way, the integrity of Trillium or their ongoing support of us,” the company said. “We are fortunate that we’ve assembled such a talented team and remain committed to brewing exceptional beer that we can share with our family, friends, and customers.”Since the issues were raised last week, customers have left scathing comments on social media posts advertising new release beers priced at as much as $22.20 a 4-pack. One commenter shared a photoshopped label of Trillium’s “Cutting Tiles” double IPA with the name changed to “Cutting Wages.”Staff pay wasn’t the only issue raised in the Beer Advocate forum. The former employee also accused Trillium of cutting corners in the brewing process, including pouring tequila into kegs of a beer and promoting the beer as being barrel-aged to consumers. The commenter also claimed that management instructed workers to lie to customers about the beer’s origins and later tell consumers that the tequila flavor was “brewers magic.”“They straight up dumped tequila into the kegs,” the commenter wrote. “I’m no lawyer, but I know that is illegal.”Trillium has yet to address those allegations.People Moves: Ex-New Belgium Brewmaster Joins Melvin’s BoardMelvin Brewing Adds Peter Bouckaert to BoardFormer New Belgium brewmaster Peter Bouckaert has joined Wyoming-based Melvin Brewing’s board of directors, according to Forbes.Bouckaert — who left New Belgium after more than two decades to join Purpose Brewing and Cellars last May — told the outlet that he approached Melvin founder Jeremy Tofte at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival to discuss the company’s growth and to learn about its response to allegations that an employee had groped a server at another brewery in Bellingham, Washington, earlier this year. That employee — who was suspended, sent to sexual harassment training and given drug addiction treatment — is no longer with the company.Bouckaert’s addition to Melvin’s board follows the exit of sales director Ted Whitney, who departed the fast-growing Wyoming craft brewery for a similar sales role with Nug, a California-based cannabis company that sells edibles, flowers, concentrates, seeds and more.As US Beer Shipments Decline, Off-Premise Sales Remain FlatShipments of domestically brewed beer are down about 2.9 percent, according to the Beer Institute, but year-to-date volume sales at off-premise retailers are still basically flat.Dwindling sales of domestic premium beers drove much of the declines, as volume sales of those products were down 5 percent during the period.Picking up some of that lost volume were imported beers. Despite modest growth for the craft category as a whole, volume sales for some of the country’s largest craft breweries – including New Belgium, Gambrinus, Craft Brew Alliance and Deschutes – were all in decline during the period.Nevertheless, other top-ranked craft beer companies are bucking category-wide trends. Founders Brewing, Stone Brewing, Canarchy Craft Brewery Collective, Firestone Walker, Dogfish Head and New Glarus Brewing were all up double-digits.Among craft beer styles, IPAs are still the largest product type in the category, with dollar sales up 12.8 percent.Sales of craft golden ales and “other pale lagers” are also still on the rise – both categories were up 13.5 percent and 52.9 percent, albeit on smaller volume bases.Stories courtesy of Brewbound (https://www.brewbound.com/) and CNBC (https://www.cnbc.com/Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel. We at the Tap Takeover Podcast hope everyone had a great 4th of July! And to help celebrate, we've got a fun and informative interview with Girls Pint Out, a national community for women who love craft beer. We sat down at the Sugar Maple Bar in Milwaukee with Maggie Skinner, President of the Milwaukee Chapter, and her friend Kelly Oiler, a Girls Pint Out member who transferred all the way from Texas. We get a hearty endorsement for New Glarus Brewing and other female-led breweries, advice on finding a career in the beer industry, and a live tasting of the Girl Grey IPA - a collaboration between Girls Pint Out and Mobcraft Brewing. Plus Beer and Festival News! Cheers!
On Episode 029 of the Agriculture Proud Podcast, Ryan Goodman and Carrie Mess continue the Over A Beer series talking about hot topics in agriculture. This week, we're likely stepping on a few toes and sharing a few tips on how not to advocate. We should start off by saying we're at the bottom of the final pitcher for this series of Over a Beer. We're not recording this episode to tell people how they have to advocate. But there is a wrong way to do it and you can mess things up. Carrie would, she married a Mess (her words, Patrick). Carrie and Ryan share their experiences of being involved for more than a decade, have our work stolen by others and being called bullies by others in the advocacy world. There's room for all of us. If you're disrespecting anyone in your advocacy in order to promote yourself, you're doing it wrong. And not to leave it all on a sour note, we give a shout out to several advocates who are doing great work in sharing their stories. In the world of agriculture advocacy, we often get caught up in the latest social media tools. But, truth is, we can be advocates offline as well. Let's not forget I started with a dumbphone just a few years ago. And apparently Carrie like to tell people to just EAT IT in song. (At least I think this is what she was trying to sing.) On Episode 028 of the Agriculture Proud Podcast, Ryan Goodman and Carrie Mess continue the Over A Beer series talking about hot topics in agriculture. This week, we're talking about how you can be an advocate for agriculture offline. So often Carrie and I will be visiting with attendees of a local meeting, conference or workshop, and receive great supports for our efforts in agriculture advocacy. But it never fails that we hear an undertone to the effect of, “That's great! But I'm not doing it. Social media is for millennials.” And that is always disappointing. We can all be advocates in our own right and that does not have to include social media. How to advocate offline If the internet ceased to exist tomorrow, could you still find a way to advocate for your cause? Sure you can! There are always opportunities surrounding us. A few of the advocacy examples we provide in the podcast include: Saying thank you at the grocery store like Carrie's father-in-law Be involved in local civic organizations Connect directly to customers Be involved in legislative or policy advocacy efforts Connect via a mutual interest like Ryan's example of Team Beef running Sometimes we just have to DO IT. We need to be involved and we shouldn't be afraid to be ourselves. One of the best ways to advocate is to push yourself beyond your comfort zone and just do it. Want an opportunity to do research with Jack Daniels? Have you considered studying cattle nutrition? Well, I didn't get to drink any JD as part of the work, but we did get to use some of their by-products from distilling as feed for beef cattle. On Episode 025 of the Agriculture Proud Podcast, Ryan Goodman and Carrie Mess continue the Over A Beer series talking about hot topics in agriculture. This week, Carrie turns the table on Ryan to ask several questions about the world of beef cattle. And Carrie doesn't start off easy. We talk about the import of beef from Brazil and concerns that have been expressed surrounding that import and export. And of course, associated with that conversation comes a discussion on Country of Origin Labeling. Instead of reiterating numbers and resources, I'll direct you to the blog post for this episode with answers and specific links to questions and topics addressed. We'd be lying if we said occasionally getting into a fight with activists isn't fun and entertaining. But it is also exhausting and can make you look like a fool. On Episode 023 of the Agriculture Proud Podcast, Ryan Goodman and Carrie Mess continue the Over A Beer series talking about hot topics in agriculture. This week's topic is activists we encounter and how to handle the situation. Ryan and Carrie both have some experience dealing with hateful comments online. Whether it be writing about controversial topics on CNN or encountering a coordinated vegan attack, these experiences have taught a few lessons about handling the situation. How do we define activism? Are agriculture advocates activists? While fighting vegan or animal rights activists online may feel good, that is not agriculture advocacy. Other people can see crazy too, so sometimes it is best to ignore the people on extremes that will never change their point of view. We should spend more time worrying about those in the movable middle who have honest questions. When you do find yourself being the target of a hateful activist, it is OK to take the high road. It doesn't make you a smaller person to back away from a conversation or delete hateful comments. And understand everyone isn't an activist, sometimes people have genuine questions or concerns. When you do respond… Comment for the benefit of the audience watching. Spend twice as much time sharing your story as you do fighting. Take a look at the profile of who is on the other end of the conversation Ask questions to better understand the other person's frame of reference Spend twice as much time listening as you do responding Consider what you say from the perspective of those outside of agriculture Let us know what you think about activism online and how to handle these situations. Or feel free to ask us any questions. Everyone aside from those too young remembers the iconic television commercials with Sam Elliott, a catchy tune and the phrase – Beef, It's What's For Dinner. But what happened to those ads? Many ranchers complain because these ads aren't front and center. Why aren't our Checkoff programs spending $5 million for a 30 second Super Bowl ad? [Read in as an angry complaint] In Episode 022 of the Agriculture Proud Podcast, Dairy Carrie and Ryan continue their Over A Beer Series, with a conversation about beef and dairy checkoff programs. I discussed some of the recent news around the Beef Checkoff in an earlier post. For this podcast episode, Carrie and I carry on the conversation and discuss our experience with these programs. We've found that many critics love to complain, but don't show up to state or national checkoff meetings to express their concerns, reach out to ask their state directors, or even show up to experience Checkoff programs working with consumers. Checkoff programs aren't doing the same things they were 40 years ago. Consumers aren't consuming content or making food purchases the same way they were even 5 years ago. We have to adapt to those changing trends. What's the solution? You'll have to listen to the podcast. You can learn more about the Beef Checkoff at BeefBoard.org and BeefItsWhatsForDinner.com. Agvocacy – a term coined within the agriculture community; commonly used to refer to agriculture advocates. Whether our start was documenting ranch life in Wyoming or selling lingerie on Twitter, our online advocacy has transformed over the past several years. Make sure you listened to the first episode of the Over a Beer series! In Episode 021 of the Agriculture Proud Podcast, Dairy Carrie and Ryan continue their Over A Beer Series, with a conversation about the evolution of agvocacy via social media. Highlights: There have been a number platforms over the years. Some have grown, some have fallen back. One thing for sure is today's prominent medium for sharing information is video and audio. Your overall body of work matters more than a single post to attract clicks and views. Chipotle and Panera. Subway. Earl's. While it may be popular to boycott the latest changes in food and ag retail, consider whether you're writing about a hot topic for people within your own community or to reach outside those circles. Cliques and divisions exist in agriculture advocacy and social media. We shouldn't deny that – we have our own haters, but that doesn't mean we have to continue contributing to that trend. What is the future of agvocacy and where do we have opportunities to improve? Carrie: People will rise and fall in the agvocacy movements. We'll see new voices, but we hope that's for the right reasons. Celebrity status isn't what agvocacy is meant to be. Much of the change we've seen over the past eight years in our efforts can be boiled down to online maturity. Ryan: If you want to be a leader, be open to different and be willing to listen. Know how to approach others on hot topics and how to facilitate a productive conversation. In-fighting within our own communities is holding agvocacy efforts back and we need to figure out how to address that problem. When good friends get together and sit down and catch up over a beer, you never know what will come of the conversation. This is especially true when Dairy Carrie is involved. On Episode 20 of the Agriculture Proud Podcast, we launch a new series, appropriately titled, Over a Beer. On a recent visit to Wisconsin, Carrie and I sat down to discuss several topics that are on our minds and of great interest in the agriculture and food communities as we enter 2017. For this episode, we take a moment to introduce ourselves and our roles in the agriculture communities. I hope you'll take a moment to provide some feedback. You never know what topics we may tackle later on in the series. Gabe and Jeff kick around the idea of how the domination of a market can change how we perceive it as well as what products we get stuck when when certain products "win" over others. Conversations range from the battle for our televisions to how free apps mean the best app may not always win. It ends up being a strangely wide-ranging topic enjoyed with a Raspberry Tart by New Glarus Brewing. (Thanks, Michael!) Raspberry Tart by New Glarus Brewing Brewery BreweryDB BeerAdvocate
