The shooting in Buffalo is being investigated as a hate crime, and given the gunman's racist writings all indications are that he targeted the Black community. We're joined by Jack McDevitt, Professor of the Practice in Criminology and Criminal Justice and Director of the Institute on Race and Justice at Northeastern University, to explore the connection between racism in America and hate crimes, and consider why explicit racism has declined over time, yet racist hate crimes have recently hit a 12-year high. We also consider when the switch happens from people holding racist views, to acting them out in lethal ways.

This week, Rob and Michelle pick some materials from the library’s digital collections to share. Both of your hosts found old favorites to revisit on Hoopla, and then they close the episode with a discussion about grief and allowing yourself the stages of grief right now, even though it can be difficult to put a finger on what you’re grieving. 2020 was quite the ride, and your hosts would like to encourage you to take the time to acknowledge your feelings in whatever stage of grief you might be in and allow yourself the space to work through it. Materials mentioned in this episode: Open Book by Jessica Simpson, Eternity Road by Jack McDevitt, The Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan, The Twilight Man: Rod Sterling and the Birth of Television, A Rocky Mountain Christmas by William W. Johnstone and JA Johnstone, Christmas Tales of Terror by Chris Priestley, Frozen Hell by John W Campbell, Jr, and Monolith by Shaun Hutson. [Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. Blasting off into space, Allen thunders into his favorite sci-fi niche of archaeological science fiction. Written in the early 90's, this class shares many of the contemporary symbolism of the sci-fi genre, and Danny and Allen compare it to a few movies while Allen explores the deep, scientific plot. They also address the fall backs of a 'hard-science' book, but alternatively they also praise the novel for it's general application. Where do we come from? What's really out there? Can we be more than we are? And, of course, tons of hidden questions and answers. This is sci-fi at its best from the pen of a master and Allen's true enthusiasm comes out in lightning! Mission: Tomorrow editor Bryan Thomas Scmidt, and authors Robin Wayne Bailey, Jack McDevitt, Jack Skillingstead, and Brenda Cooper discuss this anthology dedicated to near future stories of humanity traveling into space in a post-NASA era; and part 24 of the complete audiobook serialization of John Ringo's Under a Graveyard Sky.
Jack is a former English teacher, naval officer, Philadelphia taxi driver, customs officer, and motivational trainer. With the nomination of Echo, his work has been on the final Nebula ballot nine of the last ten years. He won the award in 2007 for Seeker. His first novel, The Hercules Text, was published in the celebrated Ace Specials series, and won the Philip K. Dick Special Award. In 1991, he received the first $10,000 UPC International Prize for his novella "Ships in the Night." The Engines of God was a finalist for the Arthur C. Clarke Award, and his novella "Time Travelers Never Die" was nominated for both the Hugo and the Nebula. Omega received the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for best SF novel, 2003. McDevitt's novels frequently raise questions which he does not attempt to answer. He prefers to leave ambiguities to puzzle and intrigue his readers: "Some things are best left to the reader's very able imagination." McDevitt lives in Georgia with his wife Maureen, where he plays chess, reads mysteries, and eats lunch regularly with his cronies. And Jack McDevitt will be available at LepreCon 39, May 9-12th. You can find him in panels and the dealers' room during several autograph sessions all weekend.

LIGHTSPEED MAGAZINE - Science Fiction and Fantasy Story Podcast (Sci-Fi | Audiobook | Short Stories)
Narrated by Stefan Rudnicki.
Les Johnson, author, lecturer and NASA scientist, is today's featured guest. Topics include: one of NASA's advanced electromagnetic propulsion systems which uses no fuel and no rocket engines whatsoever; NASA's near future projects such as the next lunar lander and the new heavy lifting vehicle Aries V; and how we might eventually find ourselves fulfilling the vision of his non-fiction book: Living off the Land in Space. Hosted by Stephen Euin Cobb, this is the August 20, 2008 episode of The Future And You. [Running time: 65 minutes] Les Johnson is a NASA physicist and manager, as well as the author of popular science books and articles. He serves as the Deputy Manager for the Advanced Concepts Office at the NASA George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Les has been on CNN, Fox News, NPR, The Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel, and in the New York Times. He made a few brief speaking appearances on camera in the BBC documentary series Space (released as Hyperspace in the USA) which was hosted by Sam Neil. He was the technical consultant for the movie Lost in Space. He is a frequent, and very popular, speaker at SF&F conventions concerning space and science. And he consulted on the books Deepsix by Jack McDevitt and War Surf by M. M. Buckner. (Two authors who have been interviewed on this show.) Les Johnson's non-fiction books include: Living off the Land in Space (which he co-wrote with Gregory L. Matloff and C Bangs) and his latest Solar Sails: A Novel Approach to Interplanetary Travel (which he co-wrote with Giovanni Vulpetti and Gregory L. Matloff). Nature (the highly-respected scientific journal now in its 139th year of publication) reviewed this book and placed it on their Recommended Reading List for the Spring.
Jack McDevitt, the best selling author, kicks off the show's new weekly format. Each weekly episode will feature a single guest interviewed in greater depth than ever before possible.Hosted by Stephen Euin Cobb, this is the January 1, 2008 episode of The Future And You. [Running time: 53 minutes]Jack McDevitt discusses how he has used the internet and email for research; science fiction on TV and in movies; what he learned by being a teacher and a newspaper reporter; and the novels that changed his life which include Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles and the young adult stories in The Voyage of the Space Beagle. He also talks about writing alternate history involving Sir Arthur Conan Dole's Sherlock Holmes, and he describes one of his favorite science fiction movies, the low-budget but brilliantly written film: Time Quest.News items include (a) this program's new weekly format (b) our much shorter readings of stories from Jim Baen's Universe Magazine, and (c) Sir Arthur C. Clarke's 90th birthday. The legendary science fiction author celebrated the happy occasion a few weeks ago (December 16, 2007) by posting online a video Birthday Message to the entire world. (Sir Arthur is one of a handful of people who shaped and altered the course of your host's life, and was instrumental in his becoming a transhumanist over 30 years ago.) Listener Feedback includes emails examining whether or not guest interviews on this program should be censored.
Senator, and presidential candidate, John McCain is joined by Jack McDevitt, Eric Flint, Doctor Aubrey de Grey, Alethea Kontis, Stoney Compton and Walt The Bananaslug Boyes. Hosted by Stephen Euin Cobb, this is the October 1, 2007 episode of The Future And You. [Running time: 121 minutes] Topics include:[1] News and Listener Feedback.[2] John McCain (presidential candidate and senator) openly threatens to close down half or more of NASA if elected president, but favors federal funding of nanotechnology and (though the issue has split the pro-life community in which he includes himself) also supports the federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.[3] Eric Flint is optimistic about the future but is highly skeptical of both nanotechnology and the Singularity; Hooey, he calls them both. He recalls that the late Jim Baen also thought nanotechnology was nonsense and yet, paradoxically, was a big fan of the Singularity. Eric laughs as he explains that, the word contradictory was made for Jim Baen.[4] The BananaSlug (Walt Boyes) joins forces with Stoney Compton (author of the alternate history novel Russian Amerika) to give us an inside peek at what's in the latest issue of Jim Baen's Universe Magazine.[5] Jack McDevitt reveals one of the little hypocrisies we all share: We say we want the schools to make our kids smart, but what we really want is for them to make our kids think like us. He also laments that our government has stopped looking for the subset of asteroids which threaten to hit the earth—a project which would cost little and yet might easily save millions of lives.[6] Another installment in our serialization of the novel Bones Burnt Black.[7] Can we see huge increases in human life expectancy in 20 to 30 years? Doctor Aubrey de Grey says this is achievable even without the form of nanotechnology called molecular manufacturing.
